DIRECTORS NOTES
Welcome and thank you for coming to the Federal
Way Chorale's final concert of the year. We have
had a wonderful season punctuated with a great
winter concert, "a better than most" performance
at the choral festival at Leavenworth, and a
stand-out collaboration with the Auburn
Symphony. For my part, this has been a rich
) and rewarding first full year.
Our concert today is all American. The first
half is a tribute to three composers who not
only dedicated their lives to creating great
choral literature, but who also faithfully
served as educators throughout their
distinguished careers. Randall Thompson
taught music at Wellesley College, Curtis
Institute of Music, the University of Virginia
and Harvard; William L. Dawson taught
at Tuskegee Institute; and Rene Clausen is
currently a teacher at Concordia College.
In light of the success each was able to achieve
through their compositions, all were willing to
share their talents and gifts with conductors and
composers around the world, helping them learn
how to bring music to life through the pen and the
hand.
The second half of the concert will feature the
music of one of the most recognized composers in
American music, George Gershwin. For Gershwin,
Porgy and Bess was a true labor of love. It has been
said that he "...never quite ceased to wonder at the
miracle that he had been its composer, he never
stopped loving each and every bar, never wavered
in the conviction that he had produced a work of
art." The concert version we will sing today was
arranged by Robert Russell Bennett and includes
some of the most beloved melodies in American
", music.
I thank you again for joining us today and hope
that you will enjoy this great American musical
tapestry.
THE FEDERAL WAY CHORALE
WELCOMES YOU to "Ye Shall Have
a Song." We hope you enjoy the music as
much as we have enjoyed preparing it for
you. The rhythms and melodies of "Porgy
and Bess," along with the message it brings
to us even today have been inspiring to the
Chorale. Laird and Megan have designed a
program around this masterpiece by George
Gershwin that is sure to delight you all.
This has been a wonderful year for the
Federal Way Chorale. I think it's fair
to say that our December Concert was
successful and presented the Chorale to
the community in a new light. Since then
we have participated in the Leavenworth
Chorale Festival, and performed the choral
portion of "The Bartered Bride" with the
Auburn Symphony to rave reviews. We are
looking forward to the musical challenges of
our season next fall with anticipation.
A great deal goes on behind the scenes
before we can present a concert for your
enjoyment. Everyone in the Chorale
deserves credit for learning the music
and presenting it with enthusiasm. Phil
Wilkinson, our accompanist, is simply
amazing. Director Laird Thornton and
Megan Oberfield, the Assistant Director,
have led our rehearsals masterfully. Mary
Jean McDonald and her entire crew of
helpers manage the concert logistics for
us. Tim Waisenan is a wonderful sound
technician. There is another aspect that
deserves special recognition, and that is
the work done by the Board of Directors.
I won't single out individuals, because
every board member has put in extra hours
and is dedicated to the Chorale and our musical
outreach to the community. My personal and
public thanks go to all of you. Naturally in an
organization like this, some have done more than
others. You know who you are, special thanks to
you.
If you or any of your friends are interested
in becoming p rt of a very special musical
organization which creates wonderful music
while having fun, our auditions will be held
Saturday, September 6 at Thomas Jefferson High
School. Call 253-250-3326for an appointment
- arrangements can be made for a different date
if necessary. We have room in the Chorale for
soloists, general chorus members, and non-singing
members (no audition required!) to help with
behind-the-scenes activities.
I am sure you are aware that ticket sales do not
cover our expenses. Please remember us when
you make charitable contributions throughout
the year. The Chorale is a 501 (c)(3)organization
under IRSrules and tax-deductible donations may
be sent to the Federal Way Chorale, PO Box 26182,
Federal Way, Washington, 98093. You will find a
pre-addressed envelope in the program for your
convenience.
Once again the Chorale extends its thanks to St.
Luke's Lutheran Church and to the staff here for
their generous hospitality. I don't know what
we would do if they could no longer share their
facility with us.
A performance is not a concert unless there is
an audience. Thank you for being a part of our
concert.
Life's more fun with a song and a smile,
