Iamso pleased that we are able to close the year with
this kind of concert. It kind of sets us upfor recognition
of the past and the vision of the future. As eclectic as
that statement sounds, we are already lookingforward
to the celebration of the 20th year concert of the
Federal Way Chorale where we will give tribute to the
excellence of years gone by. We also look to the future
as we are going to be sharing the works of composers
from Federal Way this evening. The establishment
of new material from local people we know and love
is another true expression of artistry in music. And
we're also eagerly 100kingIorward to your reaction
as we bring some real vocaljazzto Federal Way - not
only through th~Chorale but with the wonderful and
award-winning Vocalijazz ensemble from Bellevue
College, "CelebratiOn'; underthe.direction of my
long.-time friend, Tom AlmlL You will be wowed by
their treatment of jazz. It will be goodfor me to see
your reaction to this style of music. Federal Way has
great artistic variety such as classical, symphonic,
barbershop al]dtheater, but we haven't really found
our expression in the jazz idiom. Your reaction might
Composer: John M. Emlen
John spent his professional life doing nothing
with music as he was a biology professor and
researcher, except that he acknowledges that
he was a moderately good pianist. Then on
retirement he got interested in composition. He
recorded his first three pieces about 3 years ago,
a piano sonata, a cello sonata and some variations
for viola and piano and has since written a violin
sonata, variations for piano, three suites for viola
and piano, and his chorale piece on the program
today, "I am the Last". He's now working on a
4-part orchestral piece.
John has also written two novels, not published
yet but he is optimistic!
He has also sung with the Federal Way Chorale, the Tacoma Master Chorale, very
briefly led a neighborhood Chorus back in the Palaeozoic around 1960 , and the
thrill of his life was to sing the Bach Magnificat with Eugene Ormandy and the
Philadelphia Orchestra in college.
Composer: Tom Walworth
Tom is a native of Kelso, Washington and enjoys
composing and arranging music for choirs and
string orchestras. His choral pieces have been
performed by the Northwest Repertory Singers
in Tacoma, WA, as well as by multiple groups
chosen to perform at the American Choral
Directors Association Northwest Conference
and Music Educators National Conference-NW
(NAfME). Two of his works are published by Colla
Voce Music, Inc. In recent years, he has enjoyed
his unofficial role as composer-in-residence for
the Central Cello Celebration, held biennially at
Central Washington University. Mr. Walworth.
is in his eleventh year as a music teacher for
the Federal Way Public Schools (orchestra and guitar at Thomas Jefferson High
School; orchestra and choir at Totem Middle School). He is the principal cellist for
the Rainier Symphony, bass section leader for the Northwest Repertory Singers,
and serves as a cello coach for the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. He
received his BA in Music Education and his MA in Teaching from the University of
Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA). He lives in Des Moines with his wife, Ellen.

I AM THE LAST
by John Emlen
A number of years ago I lived in a heavily wooded rural area in
southern Indiana. It's,one of those places where spring comes early.
Already in March the redbuqs have burst into bloom, the buds of
the dogwoods are opening, and the forest floor chafes to explode
in its raffish tapestry of wildflowers. Summers are hot, begetting
evening incandescences of distant heat-lightning followed by
cooling rains. Brilliaht colors emblazen the autumn, and winters
glisten with ice crystals borne on barren tree branches. It is a place
within me.
And it was there, on a warm day in May, that my neighbor, a
retired, elderly farmer-in his late eighties if appearances are to
be trusted-asked me follow him far into the woods behind his
ramshackle home. Mr. Hendricks, being a quiet man, we walked
mostly in silence, until eventually we came to a spot where the
closeness of the forest gave way to a small opening. Lilacs grew
there. Among the wild phlox and trillium were patches of yellow
daffodils. And amidst them, almost submerged in vegetation, its
roof caved, it's walls sagging, stood the decaying ruins of a small,
dark house.
"This i~whereTwasporn," Mr. Hendricks told me softly. He pallsed.
"This is where I grexYup." He looked up to where c10udsdriftedina
brilliant blue sky. '(When I'm gone ..,"He hesitated a long time, then
shrued, lowering'his'eyes withemt finishing.
For awhile, whenever I hiked the woods I would avoid that spot,
for I could not disassociate it from the infinite sadness I'd seen
on old Mr. Hendricks's face. But when, after two years, he left this
life, I ventured back.
It was winter this time, the daffodils were gonertheJilacs empty,
and bits of snow clung thinly to the rotting roof. Empty windows
like dark sockets, stared vacuously bacltat me,and for a moment
an overpowering sense of respect made me hesitate. But then,
with a surge of purpose I reached towarp the faded front doot
The doorknob met my grip with a,deathly cold: But the Qoor
swung open, exposing a darkness of olp"tobwebs, a decayed and
collapsing floor; human and animal debris, and an ancient, rusted
metal stove.
Whether the ghosts were real or only in my he~d I cannot say. But
they Were surely there - an unremittance,o{ them -'- and after
a few moments of exquisite intensity Ireluctallt:ly re-closed the
door and left.
Years have passed since I quit that part of t e world, but the
memories
'j
still haunt me, and I realize now tl1at my reading of old
Mr. Hendrick's emotions, while accuraie, yvere woefully short of
fuiI comprehension, for I now find myself in'a similar position.
