As we close another Chorale season it is a little difficult to think of celebration, but celebrate we will. Think about it: our
lives are full of celebrations. During the Christmas season, we celebrated with the major choral work, "A Day for Dancing"
by Lloyd Pfautsch. Then, in March we were honored to celebrate our musical talents by performing "Mass in Time of
War" by Joseph Hadyn with the Federal Way Symphony. As you may recall, a group of Chorale members had plans to
perform this masterwork with other community choirs this Spring at Carnegie Hall, but September 11th changed our
plans rapidly as other community choirs cancelled their trips to New York City; making it impossible for the hosts to
continue supporting this festival. Though chosen over a year ago as the selection to be performed at Carnegie Hall, it
became a most appropriate choice for us to do with the Federal Way Symphony earlier this year.
Now, once more, our thoughts are on our country and our heroes of both the present and September 11th. And
so, this evening we perform a group of both patriotic and inspirational songs to show our appreciation for both
our country and those who daily put their lives in danger so that we might feel safe, feel free. In a special way,
this concert also honors our community's firefighters who do so much for us each and every day. They are truly
"Everyday Heroes" and we are proud to give them recognition.
The Federal Way Honor Guard was formed in January 2000. Presently the team consists of 11 members and does various
services for the community, including flag ceremonies for major events, such as business openings and funerals.

The Federal Way Chorale wishes to provide an opportunity for talented vocalists in Federal Way and surrounding
communities to learn and perform excitinq choral literature from all ages and styles. We belong to the Chorale because
we receive much joy from singing. We take great pride in our accomplishments, and so we always strive for excellence.
Should you wish to join us please call music director Don Barrows at 253-854-0868 for more information and an
appointment to audition. Next open audition is Saturday September 7 at the Federal Way United Methodist Church.
A graduate of Gonzaga University, Don received his masters degree from Eastern
Washington State University. During his thirty years of teaching, Don attended
numerous workshops with conductors such as Norman Luboff, Roger Wagner, Robert
Shaw, John Rutter, Maurice Skones, Paul Salmonovich, and Weston Noble. Don taught
at a number of high schools throughout the State of Washington which included: Colville,
Foster, Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln of Tacoma, Kentridge, and Decatur. During his thirty
years of teaching, Don's choirs frequently were chosen to perform at both State and
Northwest Music Conferences. Don is presently the choirmaster at St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Church in Federal Way; a position he has held for over twenty years. Retirement
from teaching allowed Don to fulfill another dream in the Spring of 1993 when Federal
Way's own community choir, the Federal Way Chorale, was organized by Don and
close friends Jim Burbidge, Carolyn Perrone, AI McEachern, and Joan Tabrum.
Andrew Miller, a Northwest native, majored in vocal and piano performance at the University
of Puget Sound studying with Dr. Thomas Goleeke. He is active in church music and has
played for numerous professional vocal and instrumentalist soloists. He is an invaluable
asset to the chorale in preparing it's challenging repetoire. Andrew has composed numerous
choral and orchestral pieces including "A Shepherd's Song", featuring acclaimed tenor,
Robert McPerson, "A Baptismal Prayer", "Give Thanks", as well as "The Sights and Sounds
of Christmas", and "My Ain Folk", commissioned by the Federal Way Chorale, to name a
few. Andrew has also completed a number of compact disc recordings including "Manic
Faith", "Your Favorite Opera Aria's", "In Love With Santa", "Irish Eyes", recorded in
London 2001, and Children's Lullaby's. In it's first release "In Love With Santa" achieved
gold status in the Netherlands. Andrew is a professor at Highline Community College, and
currently holds posts as musical director at the Federal Way United Methodist Church on
51st, conductor for the Northwest Chamer Ensemble, and music director for singing
ensemble, "Cross Wind". Andrew just returned from South Korea where he was the pianist
for the touring group "Tour de Force."
Philip Wilkinson studied piano privately for fifteen years and was active as soloist, recitalist, and accompanist. He is
currently organist at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, and plays for ballroom and tango dancing. In addition to
keyboard, he has performed as principal violist with the Rainier Symphony, the Mahler Festival Orchestra, and local
theaters. He also finds time to play "fiddle" with Celtic and Scandinavian folk groups. Philip is a graduate of the
University of Washington.
