PRELUDE Pie Jesu Gabriel Fauré
“Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest.”
INVOCATION AND REMEMBRANCE OF ALL SAINTS
Please rise, turning to face the cross at the entrance of the church.
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Let us remember all the all the saints before God.
We praise and bless you, O holy Trinity. You have taught your church that it is an ageless communion
of saints. We thank you for gathering those who faithfully waited in hope for the redemption
you promised, and now for adding us who celebrate the love of your Christ for the
redemption of the world. Prepare a place for us among those who are already with you. Help
us remember them as an encouragement to saintly living, exciting us to love, in anticipation of
an eternal reunion.
Christ says, Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
And you will find rest for your souls.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray… Almighty God, our people are knit together in one communion in the mystical
body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives
of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who
love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, whom with you and the Holy Spirit we
worship and praise, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

FIRST READING: Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18
In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as
he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2 I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four
winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3 and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different
from one another.
15As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified
me. 16 I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he
said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: 17 "As for these four great
beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive
the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever--forever and ever."
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL CHOIR (8:30)
SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:11-23
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose
of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were
the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also,
when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him,
were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance
toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory.
15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and
for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and
revelation as you come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may
know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance
among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe,
according to the working of his great power. 20 God put this power to work in Christ
when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far
above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not
only in this age but also in the age to come. 22 And he has put all things under his feet and has
made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who
fills all in all.
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL: Luke 6:20-31
The holy Gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Then [Jesus] looked up at his disciples and said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21"Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
"Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and
defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely
your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.
24"But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
25"Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
"Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the
false prophets.
27"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the
cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even
your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not
ask for them again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you."
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty One, you are the River
of Life, you are the everlasting Wellspring, you are the Fire of rebirth.
Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and creeks. Honor to you
for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us,
around us, above us; our life is born in you. You are the fountain of
resurrection. Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals
survive the flood. The Israelites escape through the sea and drink
from the gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away, and the Samaritan
woman will never be thirsty again. At this font, Holy God, we
pray: breathe your Spirit over this water and into us gathered here this
day. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away
the sin within us, and drown the evil around us. Quench all our thirsts
with your eternal fountain, and bring to birth the body of your Son,
who lives and loves with you and the Spirit, one God, now and forever.
OFFERTORY PRAYER
Merciful Father,
we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—our selves, our time,
and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who
offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE AND PRAYERS FOR HEALING
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our savior Jesus Christ. By the witness
of the saints you show us the hope of our calling, and strengthen us to run the race set before
us, that we may revel in your mercy, and rejoice with you in glory. And so, with all the choirs of
angels, with Jean, Luther, Helen, Elmer, Betty, John, Ardell, Norris, Elizabeth, and all the faithful
of every time and every place, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
11

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us this far along the way. In
times of bitterness you did not abandon us, but guided us into the path of love and light. In
every age you sent prophets to make known your loving will for all humanity. The cry of the
poor has become your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire. In fullness
of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to the afflicted, to break bread with
the outcast and despised, and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance
of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the
forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until
he comes.
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to
free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death. Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church
say, Amen.
Amen.
Send you Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with
courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world. Come, Spirit of freedom! And
let the church say, Amen.
Amen.
Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age, that, rejoicing in the
hope of the resurrection, we might live in the freedom and hope of your Son, through whom,
and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty
Father, now and forever.
Amen.
12

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.
Announcements
Welcome back Pastor Hoffman this morning at “Eat. Vote. Pray.”
10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.
Deficit Necessitates Furlough
As of November 1, the financial deficit in the General Fund, reached ($54,331). Because of the
wise advance planning of the Council, a plan is in place to meet this unfortunate situation, and
that plan now calls for a week of staff furloughs without pay for all church employees. This
furlough will run from tomorrow (11-8), through next Monday (11-15). All parish activities for
next week will be cancelled and the church office will be closed. Pastor Hoffman and Vicar
Boyce will be working throughout the week and will lead worship on Sunday, 14 November.
Before the conclusion of 2010, Pastor Hoffman will also be furloughed for a week without
pay. Please be assured that your Congregation Council is dedicated to working with the
congregation toward a retirement of this deficit before the end of our fiscal year, December 31,
2010. The net savings of this week of unpaid leave for staff members will be around $8,000, so
there is still a great deal of congregational effort that will be necessary for the retirement of our
debt before year’s end. During the coming week of furlough, the CDC will be open and all of
its activities will be conducted according to the CDC’s usual schedule. Pledge Sunday for
2011’s General Fund, scheduled for next Sunday, November 14, will be celebrated as scheduled.
Council Meeting Delayed
Attention All Council Members! Because of the week of staffing furloughs, our November
meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Starting next Sunday in the Adult Education Hour: Sabbatical Reflections
Pastor Hoffman will lead adult forum on Sunday, November 14 and again on Sunday, November
21 in Fellowship Hall at 10:00 a.m. The first week will focus on the two conferences at
which Pastor Hoffman represented Phinney this past summer in Paris and Oxford and the subsequent
writing experiences that have come from those events. The second week will focus a
bit more on the experiences of travel and worship, both foreign and domestic, and the impressions
that Pastor Hoffman brings back to Phinney. This should be an interesting and thoughtprovoking
conversation about the shape of our ministry for the years to come.
+ Christ the King Hymn Festival 11/21
Join Us as We sing our way through the Church Year …
As we gather for worship on the final Sunday of another liturgical year, we celebrate the reign
of Christ in our lives and in the life of the world. This is the Sunday of CHRIST THE
KING! To make the events of Christ’s life come alive for us as we reach this pivotal point of
the liturgical cycle, we will sing a hymn from each of the seasons of our King’s life from Advent
through Christmas, into Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and back again to the celebration
of his eternal, Universal reign.
“One Nation, Many Faiths” - Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith Service
On the evening of November 24 PRLC will once again join our neighbors of many faiths for
the third annual Phinney Ridge Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service. As in past years, PRLC
will host the main service, but this year we’re doing something different beforehand. Beginning
at 6:30 p.m., you have the option of gathering at the Sakya Buddhist Monastery, 108 NW 83 rd
Street, for the spinning of the Tibetan prayer wheels. A candlelight procession to PRLC will
follow. Those not wishing to participate in the procession may gather at the church as usual by
7:30.
This service began in 2008 as a way to emphasize common values and build community while
highlighting unique practices and rituals. The theme for this year’s worship service is “One
Nation, Many Faiths.”
Participating faith communities in addition to PRLC include: Masjid Uman Al Farooq in
Mountlake Terrace, Temple De Hirsch Sinai on Capital Hill, Luther Memorial Lutheran
Church (ELCA) in Greenwood, Sakya Tibetan Monastery, St. John the Divine Roman Catholic
Church, Woodland Park United Methodist Church, Woodland Park Presbyterian Church
(USA), St. John United Lutheran Church (ELCA).
Refreshments will be served after the service in Fellowship Hall. As in past years, please bring
a pie and/or another item of food to share. A collection will be taken and dedicated to local
and international agencies helping people in need. Come offer thanksgiving with your
neighbors and bring a friend!
The Ethiopia Chicken Hatchery Project
Don Maier, the ELCA and the 3rd-5th grade Sunday School are collecting donations for this
project. So, every Wednesday during the BFJ birthday celebrations, we are asking that the birthday
people donate to this project in the amount of their age. There will be information available
about the chicken hatchery plans. Of course, you can always donate money even it is not your
birthday. For more information, talk with Don Maier or Tina Georgeson. Thanks!
Multigenerational Advent Fair November 28
Steps to Bethlehem
Have you ever thought about the phrase, “Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?” Literally, it
might be tough if his or her shoes are uncomfortable shoes (like heels!) or worn out. Figuratively,
we interpret this as thinking about what position the other person is at in his life. Are
there marital troubles, health issues, or financial woes?
The PRLC Health Ministry is proposing an opportunity for you to walk with Joseph and Mary
as they journey to Bethlehem. Similar to the “Steps to Emmaus” program Pastor Piro developed
last year, “Steps to Bethlehem” will be a challenge for you to improve your health- physically,
spiritually, and mentally. It will be a fun way to face the holiday season with a team of
fellow parishioners, as we navigate through a period that usually proves to be a trial of both our
willpower and emotions. As we “walk together,” we hope each congregation member will take
time each day to reflect on his gifts, and how he can share those with others, as well as assist
others with their needs, helping and encouraging them to move with us to a healthier existence.
We hope you join us!
Look for the rollout of this program on November 14. Strap on you boots, walking and dancing
shoes, and get out your pen to write your steps, nutrition, and thoughts as together we walk
to Bethlehem with Mary and Joseph to emerge in 2011 a little healthier.
Each week, we will have a “weekly challenge” for you to work on that week as well as the following
weeks. We will have a table set up for you to report your progress on the challenge of
the week, as well as weekly steps. We will also have an email address you can use to report this
information, if you prefer.
As members of the congregation tally their collective “steps,” whether they be from walking,
running, dancing, swimming, or other activities, we will chart our progress of our journey to
Bethlehem. We will have forms available the 14 th to start off the program. We hope you
choose to make the journey with us!
