Eleventh Sunday
After Pentecost
August 28, 2011
8:30 & 10:00 a.m.

Welcome Visitors:
We welcome all who worship with us today.
Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you
feel at home among us.
Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through
age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain.
Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents
gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table
together. An usher will be glad to direct you.
Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition
to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a
changing table.
Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We
ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may
be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups” you can
do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during
the service.
Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday
morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information
about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or
email changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations.
Current newsletters and program information are located there.
Look for the “check in desk” in the church gathering area.
Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org
for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities
for service and study.
Join us again!
We worship every Sunday during the summer at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. and
would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often.
ENTRANCE HYMN: For the Beauty of the Earth (ELW 879)
APOSTOLIC GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray…
O God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the
world. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to
follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
SERVICE OF THE WORD
FIRST READING: Jeremiah 15:15–21
O LORD, you know;
remember me and visit me,
and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance do not take me away;
know that on your account I suffer insult.
Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart;
for I am called by your name,
O LORD, God of hosts.
I did not sit in the company of merrymakers,
nor did I rejoice;
under the weight of your hand I sat alone,
for you had filled me with indignation.
Why is my pain unceasing,
my wound incurable,
refusing to be healed?
Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook,
like waters that fail.
Therefore thus says the LORD:
If you turn back, I will take you back,
and you shall stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
you shall serve as my mouth.
It is they who will turn to you,
not you who will turn to them.
4

And I will make you to this people
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you,
but they shall not prevail over you,
for I am with you
to save you and deliver you,
says the LORD.
I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
RESPONSE
Cantate Domino Canticum Novum
Tr: Sing to the Lord on high, oh sing ye a new song
His praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let all of Israel rejoice now,
Rejoice in Him who made them,
And children of Zion be joyful
And praise God, their King.
Giuseppe Pitoni
SECOND READING: Romans 12:9–21
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual
affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit,
serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to
the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who
rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty,
but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone
evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it
depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room
for the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." No,
"if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for
by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads." Do not be overcome by evil, but
overcome evil with good.
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21–28
The holy gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo
great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed,
and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying,
"God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter,
"Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not
on divine things but on human things."
Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny
themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will
lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if
they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?
For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he
will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here
who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (8:30)
The 10:00 a.m. service continues with Prayers and Peace on page 10
INTRODUCTION TO BAPTISM
In baptism God frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of
our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy
Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ.
Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to
the will of God.
PRESENTATIONS
We present Larson Everett for baptism.
Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your
son baptized into Christ?
We do.
As you bring your son to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with
responsibilities:
to live with him among God’s faithful people,
bring him to the word of God and the holy supper,
teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
place in his hands the holy scriptures,
and nurture him in faith and prayer,
so that your son may learn to trust God,
proclaim Christ through word and deed,
care for others and the world God made,
and work for justice and peace.
Do you promise to help your son grow in the Christian faith and life?
We do.
Sponsors, do you promise to nurture this child in the Christian faith as you are empowered
by God’s Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with
the church?
We do.
People of God, do you promise to support Larson Everett and pray for him in his new life
in Christ?
We do.
7

PROFESSION OF FAITH
I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce all the powers of this world that rebel against God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
I renounce them.
Do you believe in the God the Father?
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and
was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into
heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living
and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness
of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATERS
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks to the Lord our God.
Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty One, you are the River of Life, you are the
everlasting Wellspring, you are the Fire of rebirth. Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for
rivers and creeks. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are
below us, around us, above us; our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection.
Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals survive the flood. The Israelites
escape through the sea and drink from the gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away,
and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again. At this font, Holy God, we pray:
breathe your Spirit over this water and into us gathered here this day. Illumine our days.
Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around
us. Quench all our thirsts with your eternal fountain, and bring to birth the body of your
Son, who lives and loves with you and the Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
8

BAPTISM
Larson Everett, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.
LAYING ON OF HANDS
Let us pray…
We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your sons and
daughters new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Larson
with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel
and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence,
both now and forever.
Amen.
SIGNING WITH THE CROSS
Larson Everett, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the
cross of Christ forever.
Amen.
PRESENTATION OF CANDLE AND ROBE
Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your
Father in heaven.
Put on this robe, for in baptism you have been clothed in the righteousness of Christ who
calls you to his great feast.
WELCOME
Let us welcome the newly baptized.
We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving
thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s creative and redeeming word to all the
world.
Announcements
Choir Opportunities at PRLC
Chancel Choir is for singers who enjoy leading in worship with the classic music of the church.
Psalms, hymns, Spirituals and world music, as well as choral masterpieces from the Baroque to
the present are part of the Chancel Choir repertoire. The Chancel Choir leads congregational
song and sings an offertory anthem for 11:00 worship most weeks, and rehearses Wednesdays,
7:30-9:00pm beginning Sept. 14. Previous choir or music-reading experience is helpful but not
required.
Beginning and Advanced Handbell Choirs meet for 5-6 weeks in the fall and 5-6 weeks in the
spring. Each 5-6 week session includes Sunday rehearsals, 4:30-6:00 pm and ringing in several
worship services. For the beginning group, no experience is necessary, but some music-reading
ability is required. (A great opportunity for lapsed instrumentalists!) For the advanced group,
significant handbell experience is expected.
Gospel Choir is for singers and instrumentalists who enjoy singing contemporary gospel, Spirituals,
and songs of freedom and peace. We rehearse each Wednesday from 6:20-7:15 during
Bread for the Journey. This is an especially convenient time for parents who have children or
youth involved in our choirs or confirmation. You are warmly welcomed to check us out in the
Tree of Life room. Experience is not necessary. The choir sings monthly in worship and at
various concerts and community events throughout the year. Regular rehearsals begin Sept. 14.
(See flyer for information about our open house on 9/7.)
To have one of our directors contact you with more information, please sign up on today’s
Count-Me-In.
Spirited Women Resume Sept. 14
The Spirited Women of PRLC meet weekly for conversation, book discussions, coffee, and
snacks. In our discussions we cover the questions, doubts, certainties and challenges of daily
faithful living as they relate to the current book we are reading. This group, which resumes on
September 14, meets every Wednesday through the school year from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the
Tree of Life Room. Child care is provided for infants through pre-school children. Please come
and join this weekly gathering. Contact Pastor Piro with any questions.
“Bread for the Journey” Also Begins Sept. 14
“BfJ”, as it is often called, is a comprehensive ministry program on Wednesday evenings that
involves about 150 people in activities ranging from choir, to confirmation, to Bible study, to
AA. These activities both precede and follow a fellowship meal at 6:00, at which individuals
and families gather for food and conversation. (Meals can be purchased individually or on semester-long
meal tickets.) At the evening’s conclusion, all gather on the Sanctuary steps for a
brief but inspiring service of Evening Prayer. The lights are low, the music mellow, and families
go home well-nourished—in body and spirit— and ready for bed. Make time on Wednesday
evenings for this special ministry of PRLC, starting September 14.
Ushers Urgently Needed
Ushers are a fantastic group of sincere, polite, observant and gracious folks who enthusiastically
greet worshipers, graciously gather offerings, count attendance at services, and politely guide
worshipers to and from the Lord’s table. And we urgently need a few more! Please sign up on
today’s Count-Me-In if you would like to help with this important ministry, especially if you are
available in the months of February, August, and November. If you have any questions you can
have a roster of those members who currently are trained in cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an AED. We also plan to offer
a CPR class here in the near future to train those who wish to receive
this training.
Please respond on the "Count me in" form if you are currently trained
OR if you are interested in a CPR class at Phinney.
PRLC’s New Children and Family Minister
With joy the congregation council announces the addition of Ms. Nancy Monelli to the staff of
Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church as our new Children and Family Minister. Nancy, a native of
Arizona, has served in similar positions in the Episcopal Church for over 25 years, until she and
her husband relocated to Seattle several years ago. Her ministry among us begins officially on
1 September. Please keep Nancy and her husband, Roy, in your prayers during this time of
transition.
Volunteers Needed to Sew and Fill LWR School Kit Bags
We have a goal: 100 school kits for Lutheran World Relief. Sure, we
need school supplies, but we need people to sew the simple bags to
hold the supplies too. A supply list and pattern for bags are available
at the Grace Station or online at www.lwr.org. (Click on “Get Involved”
then “Quilts and Kits”.) Dig into your fabric stash at home or
pick up fabric at the Grace Station on Sunday. All supplies and bags
should be returned to the church by Sunday, September 11.
The bags need to be filled with the following items, which you can
bring to Grace Station on Sunday or drop at the church office during
regular office hours:
• 70-sheet notebooks (wide or college ruled)
• Rulers with centimeters
• Pencil sharpeners
• Blunt scissors
• Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers
• Ball point pens (no gel ink)
• Crayons – boxes of 16 or 24
• 2 ½ inch pink erasers
Scenes From Our Summer
Summer is full of ‘Godly play’--travel, nature, family and faith. The Art Committee invites you
to share a photo, postcard, artifact or musing about your out-and-about summer experiences, to
be posted on the narthex art wall. Please leave your items (with name on back) at the Grace Station
throughout the summer. The display will begin on Sunday August 7. There will be several
maps where you can put a pin showing your travels as well. Remember Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in
the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him
and He will make your paths straight.”
Fall Women’s Retreat October 21-23
This retreat, at Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way, is open to all adult women. Consider inviting
a friend, daughter, sister or Mom. Plan to dig into your Bible with Pastor Bev Piro! Retreats
provide an opportunity for in-depth learning and reflection, deepening bonds of friendship with
fellow retreaters and just plain fun. A single room plus five delicious meals costs $200. Generous
scholarships are available for women under the age of 30 and over the age of 70. Pick up a
flyer and registration form at Grace Station this morning! Questions can go to Signe Roscoe,
phone 734-5663; email ksroscoe@nwlink.com; or to Pastor Piro.
Joint Evening Prayer with Awake Church at Aurora Commons...
will be tonight, August 28 at 7 p.m. Please plan to join with this emerging congregation serving
in the heart of Aurora Avenue's bustling neighborhood, at 8914 Aurora Ave N. The service will
be led by Pastor Hoffman, members of the congregation and staff of Awake, and musicians
from PRLC. The service will include singing, Scripture, and prayers shared by the entire congregation,
and individual healing rites administered at five stations at the service's conclusion.
We pray that God will richly bless this new, shared venture in ministry and that it will be the
beginning of a regular practice of shared worship between the two congregations and the people
we serve.
Just What Is Aurora Commons?
(Paraphrased from the Aurora Commons website, http://www.auroracommons.org/content/
our-history)
The Aurora Commons was started by a group
of friends who live on or around Aurora Avenue here
in Seattle.
Most people know the Aurora corridor as a strip
that harbors and is fueled by prostituted women and
men, drugs and homelessness. We, however, experience
Aurora in a different way because it is our neighborhood and these are our
neighbors—we simply refuse to allow the negative labels to be the guiding narrative of our
locale.
The neighbors who live here dream of a different way, a way that we believe already
exists within the hearts, minds and humanity of our neighborhood. We believe this because
we experience our neighbors’ pain, loneliness, isolation, addictions; their burdens, their
gifts, their joys, hopes, dreams and most importantly, their longings for a different way of
living. The grief, love and outrage that we feel for our friends led to the development of
the community center on Aurora called The Aurora Commons.
The Aurora Commons is a community response to what we believe all people deserve:
love and their basic rights as precious human beings. The Aurora Commons provides a
space for us to better bridge our neighbors to housing, assistance and healing opportunities
– but it will not end there. We believe that true healing comes from beyond systemically
caring for those in our midst - we must live with them. We must need them. We must
be a community.
