Students in the Wood
Manufacturing class for
the spring of 2011 were
part of the unique handson
and very real-world
learning opportunity of
running a student company.
Students worked hard
to manufacture products,
and their end-of-year
sale generated a prot
for the student company.
This resulted in a $225
donation to the Ronald
McDonald House on behalf
of the 2011 J-DHS Wood
Manufacturing Club. The
donation is in memory of
Rick Casey, a class of 2011
classmate who passed
away of cancer in 2005.
The Ronald McDonald
House was also the recipient
of a $1,000 donation
from a School Store run
Four students of the
RamPage staff won
awards at the 2011 High
School Press Day sponsored
by The Post-Standard.
Wood-class pupils practice
the business of learning
by the J-DHS Corporate
Communication class.
The Wood Manufacturing
class was run as
a small business. Their
work ranged from planning
— they decided to
make beaded jewelry and
bat houses — to purchasing
equipment and supplies,
making the nished
products, marketing the
products, deducting sales
tax, calculating a prot
and performing a detailed
reection of their experiences.
Along the way, class
members, led by teacher
Larry Vielhauer, also
manufactured 20 pens for
the Freedom Pen Project.
These pens will be mailed
to military service men
and women overseas.
The Wood Manufacturing
class this spring ran a small
business that made, among
other things, bat houses, like
the one seen at left. The business
made a prot, and donated
$225 to Ronald McDonald
House. The students pictured
above just graduated, but in
2009 were featured in a Penn
State Industries magazine cover
story about their work.
