END-OF-YEAR EDITION
Facilities projects at
all district buildings
get the green light
from New York State
In
This
Issue:
After months of
waiting, we nally received
approval from
the State Education
Department on May
27 th so we can proceed
with the capital
project approved by
the voters in October.
Part, or all, of the
roof will be replaced
at all of our buildings,
including the bus garage.
That work will
be completed during
this summer and fall at
the three elementary
buildings. Because of
the late approval from
Albany, the work at
the middle and high
schools will take two
construction seasons,
this summer/fall and
next summer. Because
of roof work, there will
be no public use of our
buildings this summer
except gym facilities
at the high school.
Site work is also
taking place at Jamesville
Elementary, Moses
DeWitt, the middle
school, high school,
and the bus garage.
The work at the schools
will begin this summer
and be completed in
the fall. Jamesville
Elementary is having a
complete reconstruction
of the parking lot
and bus loop. Moses
DeWitt will have some
sidewalk, entranceway,
and parking lot
repair, as well as resealing
the tennis courts.
The middle school will
have part of the driveway
reconstructed and
the basketball/tennis
courts resealed.
The high school is
also having signicant
work done. The long
promised bleacher replacement
at the major
athletic eld will nally
take place. The bleachers
will be removed this
summer. Bleachers are
custom-ordered so they
will not be delivered
until long after school
starts and the fall
athletic season begins.
We will publicize the
schedule and location
for the fall sports impacted
by this as soon
as arrangements are
nalized.
The entrance driveway
and student parking
lots will also be
reconstructed.
This summer and fall
will be challenging at
all of our buildings as
we work through the
accommodations that
will be necessary. The
schedule is absolutely
weather dependent,
so we will make every
effort to keep you
informed when any
changes must be made.
We appreciate your
support to maintain our
facilities and your patience
as we complete
the work.
More student achievement news from the Middle School
The student council and OCRRA co-sponsored the
J-DMS Earth Day cleanup. The student council,
which was joined by other students, worked
together after school on Friday, April 29 th to ll
over ten bags of garbage. Meanwhile, in a similar
act of eco-stewardship, our fth-grade students and
staff partnered with the Town of DeWitt Advisory
Conservation Commission to celebrate Arbor Day.
Students learned about the trees that were planted
and about conservation and importance of trees. They
also read poems. The Town of DeWitt donated two
white oak trees to culminate and commemorate the
event.
Notes from the LOTE program
Our students and teachers
work hard in Languages
Other Than English (LOTE).
After only ve months
of French study, 6 th grade
French students took the
National French Contest and
these students are recognized
for nishing in the top
50 th percentile of the 1,455
students who took the contest
nationwide: Christopher
Blust, Olivia Byrnes, Sarah
Carlsen, Lizzie O’Brien, Akbar
Qahar, Julia Walsh and
Ben Wormuth. Also, two students
placed in the top 10 in
Central New York: Michaela
LeBlond placed 10 th in the
nation, and Saed Saymeh
placed 9 th in the nation.
Several of our 7 th grade
students ranked in the top
10 of Central New York.
Some 5,318 students across
the nation took this exam.
Mackenzie Maxam ranked 9 th ;
Matt O’Connor ranked 8 th ;
Amanda Henderson ranked
6 th ; Reed Jaworski ranked 5 th ;
Maddy VanHusen ranked 4 th;
Rebecca Shen and Ana Suarez
ranked 3 rd ; and Kate Norton
ranked 2 nd .
The test taken by 8 th
graders was taken by over
18,000 students across
the nation, which makes
these results even more
impressive: Elizabeth Di-
Gennaro ranked 7 th in
Central New York; Marion
Maxwell ranked 5 th in CNY
and 10 th in the nation; and
Tal Frieden ranked 1 st in
CNY and 5 th in the nation.
Of students studying
Chinese, the Phillip A.
Fulvi Love of Language
Award from New York State
Association of Foreign
Language Teachers went
to Amanda Mikesell. In addition,
the Phillip A. Fulvi
Merit Certicate from New
York State Association of
Foreign Language Teachers
went to Allison Hohreiter.
The Excellent Pioneer of
Chinese Language Award
went to Julie Harrison,
Emily Hildreth, Allison
Hohreiter, Amanda Mikesell
and Erika Siegel.
Finally, our students
scored very well on the
National Spanish Exam,
which is given voluntarily
every year by over 3,500
From the
Superintendent
Celebrating student successes,
and support from community,
in spite of ongoing fiscal crises
Page 3
Alice Kendrick
By Alice Kendrick,
District Superintendent
We have much to
celebrate at Jamesville-DeWitt.
The
months of May and
June are particularly
exciting because
there is so
much demonstration
and celebration of
student success in
many venues at all
three levels, elementary,
middle,
and high school.
Some of these are
highlighted in this
newsletter. These
celebrations are
particularly meaningful
this year. I
say that because the
board of education
and administration,
in consultation with
the community, put a
great deal of thought
and effort into developing
a budget
in extremely challenging
scal times,
that would allow for
the continuation of
the comprehensive
programs so critical
to the success
of our students. I
would like to take
this opportunity to
thank you for your
ongoing support of
the children in this
community. The
vote on the district
budget for 2011-
12 was overwhelmingly
positive, with
over 77% afrmative
votes. Your support
is instrumental to
our children’s success.
Developing a
budget that supports
their educational
needs will continue
to be a signicant
challenge as all indicators
point to a continuing
decrease in
revenue available to
schools and no relief
from our legislature
from some of the
onerous mandates
that increase the
cost of education
in New York State
without adding signicant
value. The
board of education
and district administration
will continue
to work diligently
and scally conservatively,
to balance
educational need
and stewardship.
I am pleased to
report our progress
on the district goals
identied for 2010-
11. As we review test
data over time, we
continue to make
progress toward our
goal of improving the
performance of our
student sub-groups
where a gap exists
between their performance
and the
performance of the
general population.
Our graduation rate
continues to be one
of the highest in the
area. Teachers at all
levels have engaged
in careful review of
various sources of
data about their
students and their
program to better
understand what
actions need to
be taken to support
the learning
success of every
student. Our emphasis
on literacy
and study skills
is also making an
observable difference
in student
performance in all
disciplines.
We recognize
that none of this
work would be possible
without a
community who
understands the
importance of educating
every child.
Thank you again
for your ongoing
support and commitment
to J-D
Schools. We hope
you are as proud
of the students and
their accomplishments
as we are.
We look forward to
another great year
in 2011-2012.
High School, French teacher receive national awards
Jamesville-DeWitt is
one of only nine area high
schools recently named as
one of the 1,900 best high
schools across the country
in The Washington Post’s
first nationwide High
School Challenge.
Since 1998, The Post’s
Jay Mathews has ranked
(usually for Newsweek
magazine) the 27,000
public high schools across
the United States using
the Challenge Index, his
measure of how effectively
a school prepares
its students for college.
J-DHS has been a perennial
staple of those rankings.
Mathews’ formula is
simple: Divide the number
of Advanced Placement,
International Baccalaureate
or other college-level
tests a school gave in 2010
by the number of graduating
seniors.
Meanwhile, Madame
Solace Amankwah, who
Amankwah
teaches French levels 2,
3 and 5 at J-DHS, was
recently awarded an AATF
(American Association
of Teachers of French)
summer scholarship sponsored
by the U.S. French
Embassy.
Mme. Amankwah will be
involved in a two-week
« Stage Pédagogique » at
the Institut International
d’Etudes Françaises at
the University of Strasbourg
in France. In Strasbourg,
Mme. Amankwah
will be immersed in the
French language and the
unique culture of the
Alsace-Lorraine region
of France. She is very
excited to have been
chosen, and looks forward
to her trip, which
will take place in August.

Manufacturing class for
the spring of 2011 were
part of the unique handson
and very real-world
learning opportunity of
running a student company.
Students worked hard
to manufacture products,
and their end-of-year
sale generated a prot
for the student company.
This resulted in a $225
donation to the Ronald
McDonald House on behalf
of the 2011 J-DHS Wood
Manufacturing Club. The
donation is in memory of
Rick Casey, a class of 2011
away of cancer in 2005.
The Ronald McDonald
by the J-DHS Corporate
The Wood Manufacturing
class was run as
a small business. Their
work ranged from planning
— they decided to
make beaded jewelry and
bat houses — to purchasing
equipment and supplies,
making the nished
products, marketing the
products, deducting sales
tax, calculating a prot
and performing a detailed
reection of their experiences.
Along the way, class
members, led by teacher
Larry Vielhauer, also
manufactured 20 pens for
the Freedom Pen Project.
These pens will be mailed
to military service men
and women overseas.
The Skype is no limit for virtual visits with authors
Mr. Starowicz’s sixthgrade
language arts students
used Skype to visit
with author Kate Messner.
When the students learned
that Ms. Messner was unable
to travel to school,
they turned to technology
to bridge the distance. To
prepare for their virtual
visit, students listened
(read aloud) to The Brilliant
Fall of Gianna Z.
This Kate Messner novel
is about the adventure
of a middle school girl
trying to complete a leaf
research project so she
can secure her spot on the
cross-country team participating
in Sectionals.
Because Ms. Messner is
a middle school teacher,
the 20-minute Skype visit
occurred at the end of the
school day. Many students
asked questions about the
plot of the story.
As the school year
was closing, this class
was scheduled to have
another virtual visit,
this time with Kathryn
Erskine, author of Mockingbird.
Mockingbird is
a story about a young
girl with Asperger’s Syndrome,
who is trying to
‘Where is the pool?’ Fifth-grade ‘greeters’ point the way
In late May, fourth-graders from Jamesville, Tecumseh and Moses
DeWitt came to the middle school for the much-anticipated 4 th
Grade Tour Night. And who better to show them around the middle
school than our own 5 th grade students? There were many stops
on the tour including the library, gym, computer lab, fth-grade
classrooms and of course, the pool! After being at the middle school
for the whole year, the 5 th grade tour guides really demonstrated
their knowledge about what the middle school has to offer,
answered all kinds of questions, and really made an effort to help
our future 5 th graders feel comfortable with their transition to the
middle school. Nice job! For more Middle School news, see page 2.
Performance-based education wraps up year in style
Performances enhanced the learning experiences of Jamesville
Elementary students this spring. Back in the fall many fourthgraders
elected to learn how to read and play a musical
instrument. During the annual Spring Concert – during which
the band, strings, and chorus performed – the children amazed
the audience with their musical expertise. Meanwhile, our
kindergartners took to the stage to reminisce and celebrate their
year. After learning about Japan, our rst-graders presented a
fact-lled show about Japan. Second-graders helped us to learn
about all 50 U.S. states. Finally, our third-graders learned about
caring for the environment, cleaned up the area around the school
for Earth Day, and performed “The Great Kapok Tree.”

First Earth Day Fun Fair a blast
On April 29, Moses DeWitt hosted its rst
annual Earth Day Fun Fair. Our students had an
opportunity to learn more about taking care of
our environment through recycling, gardening,
composting, and understanding the impact we
each have on the Earth. We had visitors from
OCCRA, SU’s Save the Rain Project, and Energy
Smart Communities. The Earth Day Fun Fair was
followed by a special schoolwide assembly by the
Hill Brothers titled “Mama Earth.” Moses DeWitt
students and staff had a great time singing along
with the Hill Brothers.
From sea to shining sea:
Class helps California third-graders
collect letters from students in all 50 states
Students in Ms. Alex Bowe’s third-grade
class were asked to participate in the “Great
American Mail Race.” The purpose of the
race was to collect letters from classrooms in
each of the 50 states. Students at Oak Grove
Elementary School in Aliso Viejo, Calif.,
contacted Ms. Bowe’s class and asked them to
send a letter from New York. Ms. Bowe’s class
obliged and sent a letter back to Ms. Laroche
and her students. At left is a picture of Ms.
Bowe’s class with their letter.
Spring brings things to celebrate,
from a visiting author to digging for
diamonds to the rising class of 2024
Tedd Arnold, author and illustrator,
visited Tecumseh, Jamesville, and Moses
DeWitt schools this spring. He was
a BIG hit with kids as he described
how he gets ideas for books. He
demonstrated his illustrating skills and
walked students through the process of
writing, editing and publishing a book.
The students were enthralled!
Our fourth-grade students recently had a
wonderful time searching for treasures at the
Herkimer Diamond Mines. No one seemed
to strike it rich, but it was a great learning
experience.
Kindergarten bus roundup was a great success at Tecumseh
this year. Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped
orient our class of 2024 to the world of transportation.

NYSPHSAA Scholar
Athlete Team Awards
One of our goals this
year was to achieve
a school of distinction
award, which would mean
every varsity team was
a NYSPHSAA Scholarathlete
team. We did not
meet this goal, but we
did set a new standard
for J-D. We had 22 teams
qualify as NYSPHSAA
scholar athlete teams –
the most ever. The prior
record was 21teams. This
means every team made
it except for one!
Two straight State Championships -- so far!
On June 11, the Varsity Boys Lacrosse
team defeated Garden City 8-7 in overtime,
winning a second straight Class B State
Championship. The win capped a 22-0
season, which, incredibly, followed last year’s
22-0 season. These photos capture some of
