EASTER SUNDAY
APRIL 8, 2012
Page Two EASTER SUNDAY April 8, 2012
THE RISEN CHRIST’S LIFE AND JOY BE WITH YOU!
You will not find the Risen Jesus walking among us. You will encounter him in the life you receive from
others, and in yourself when you joyfully share his love with our sisters and brothers. Then he becomes
real and present and visible among us for our world.
It seems our world at this moment in time really needs a Savior. Every day we hear about bad news
globally‐war, fighting, violence, the loss of life, and sad news close to home. But for Christians, Christ has
conquered darkness‐‐“vanquished forever” the Easter Vigil Liturgy proclaims. In him and with him, hope is
made possible and impossible situations become tolerable in his cross and victory when we overcome our
struggles united with him.
It is no accident that we celebrate the central events of our beliefs in the season of spring. All creation is
again brought to the fullness of life, including ourselves. We want to live fully alive in God and Jesus,
achieving our potential and dignity, created in God’s image, heirs to the kingdom, granted the
responsibility of carrying on our Savior’s message of freedom and newfound life in our daily person and
witness.
Easter is not a day or a liturgy, and even more than its fifty day season the Church proclaims. It is an
attitude, a way of being and living that embodies the spirit of the Risen Christ in us, his own. In the flesh
and blood of humanity, God has chosen to remain with us for all time and space in our earthly existence.
For that awesome reality, as Saint Paul says, “we should never cease giving thanks.”
May Easter’s reality penetrate your heart and spirit, and cause you to overflow with gratitude, joy, and
goodness in our Wondrous Creator whose Son has brought his world and ourselves back to life in him.
In joy and gratitude for all we share together in Christ, on this wondrous day and all others, Easter
blessings and life to you and all you love.
Gratefully,
Father LoBianco and the Parish Staff of Our Catholic Community of Divine Savior
Easter Morning Blessing on the Radiant Feast of Pascha!
Christ is Risen from the dead,
trampling death by death,
and to those in the tombs
giving life.
When you went down to
death, O life immortal, you
struck Hades dead with the
blazing light of your divinity.
When you raised the dead
from the nether world, all the
powers of heaven cried out:
“O Giver of life, Christ our
God, glory be to you!”
Magnificat, April 2012
BECOMING THE RISEN CHRIST
Through the renewal of our baptismal promises we
remember that in baptism we were joined to
Christ’s death and resurrection. What we can easily
forget is that in baptism we were also joined to the
life that Christ lived while on earth. We need not
look too far to discover that the Lord Jesus came to
call sinners to himself in order to share with them
the wonderful gifts of forgiveness and salvation.
Through our own baptism, we are called to imitate
Christ. We are to let people know that, in and
through Jesus Christ, true forgiveness and
reconciliation are possible. As we lift heart and
voice, singing the words of today’s responsorial
psalm, let us rejoice and be glad that in our baptism
we have become the risen Christ for the world.
Easter Sunday
Acts 10:34a, 37‐43 / Col 3:1‐4 or Cor 5:6b‐8 / Jn 20:1‐9
or Mk 16:1‐7
Jack, the 4 year‐old son of my friend, recently made this
profound theological announcement: “Easter is the most
special church day, because that’s when Jesus un‐died.”
I was impressed by his depth of theological
understanding. And in a way, he’s right—Jesus did “undie”
on Easter, but it’s not as though he simply returned
to his former life. He didn’t un‐die in the same way we
untie shoes and the laces go back to being loose or in the
way we unlock a door or open it again.
As we know from the post‐resurrection stories, Jesus’
situation was quite different. His friends didn’t initially
recognize him, he entered through locked doors, he
sometimes disappeared from sight. His resurrected self
was very different from his previous self, yet it still was
Jesus. The angel in Mark’s narrative says it quite clearly:
“he is not here”—the Jesus you knew isn’t here, but the
resurrected Jesus is quite alive and well.
Jesus’ resurrection reveals a truth not only about eternal
life, but also about the new life God offers through the
“deaths” in our daily lives. God provides new,
resurrected life when we experience suffering or loss,
but it often looks very different from our previous life.
When we lose a job, God can provide new opportunities,
but it’s usually not the same job we had before. When a
relationship ends, God can provide a new companion,
but it will be a different person and a new experience. All
the “deaths”—serious illness, loss of a loved one, leaving
a familiar home—cannot be un‐died.
Life looks different after these deaths, but then it
should—God offers us resurrected life in these moments.
That’s the tremendous joy we celebrate today in Easter.
