Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence
Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the
funds he needs to carry out his most important
charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most
disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural
disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the
peace of Christ upon the world.

Shrine of Christ’s Passion Trip
The Women’s Club of Divine
Savior extends an `open invitation’
to their upcoming trip to the
Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St.
John, Indiana on Tuesday,
September 27, 2011. The Shrine of
Christ’s Passion is an interactive half‐mile winding
pathway that begins with the Last Supper and Garden of
Gethsemane. You will journey through the Passion of
Christ as depicted in the Stations of the Cross. There are
40 life size bronze statues. You will hear a description of
the scene along with a meditation narrated by veteran
broadcaster Bill Kurtis. Electric carts are available for
disabled visitors. The 33 foot statue of Our Lady of the
New Millennium’s permanent home is at the Shrine. In
addition to the above, we will be touring St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Church and lunching at the Country
Buffet. Cost of the trip is $40.00 and is open to everyone
but is limited to the first 50 paid participants.
The bus leaves Divine Savior’s back parking lot promptly
at 8:30 AM and returns by 5:30 PM. For reservations or if

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a 12‐hour
community and volunteer based fund‐raising event. In
2010, Relay brought together more than 3.5 million
people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled
cancer, remember loved ones lost, and empower
individuals and communities to fight back against
disease that takes too much. Cancer never stops;
therefore, for 12 hours participants take turns walking a
track, symbolizing the life of a cancer patient, while
enjoying entertainment and activities. Join us at Relay
and support the Fight Against Cancer.

Maywood, IL, is in great need of the donations we

Home Delivered Meals are delivered Monday through
Friday by faithful VOLUNTEERS. If you have two free
hours a week, you can help homebound neighbors by
delivering a hot meal at noontime. Can you think of a
better way of spending two FREE hours?
Interested? Please call the Seniors Assistance Center, at

from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A small stipend will be given
for mileage. Your help with this service would be greatly

The Most Holy Trinity
Ex 34:4b‐6, 8‐9 / 2 Cor 13:11‐13 / Jn 3:16‐18
Sometimes I turn into an 8‐year‐old girl.
At times the transformation is predictable: at the sight of
presents under the Christmas tree or the delightful
sounds of exploding fireworks on the Fourth of July. But
at other times the transformation is unexpected: at the
sight of a turtle meandering along the bike trail or the
taste of the first fresh peach of summer.
Though I’m a grown woman, these experiences (and
many others) seem to instantly transform me into an
awe‐filled child complete with squeals, wide eyes, and
sometimes hushed silence.
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity calls for a similar
response. Though theologians have written libraries of
descriptions, explanations, and images of our trinitarian
God, we ultimately have to confess that the Trinity is a
mystery before which we bow in awe, as did Moses on
encountering Yahweh on Mount Sinai.
Our God is described in today’s Exodus reading as
“merciful and gracious” and “slow to anger and rich in
kindness and fidelity.” The Hebrew word for merciful
(rahum) describes a love for the child of one’s womb.
Given such tender parental mercy and love from our God
while still in sin and brokenness, we can respond only
with humility and awe.
So on this day perhaps we ought to practice some
childlike awe. Go outside and ponder God’s wondrous
creation. Inspect the details of a leaf, an insect, a water
droplet on a blade of grass. Delight in the soft skin of a
newborn child. Breathe in deeply the aroma of a homecooked
meal. Study the glow of a candle flame.
Encounter the face of God in your neighbor, your spouse,
your child.
Sit in awed silence before our merciful and loving God,
the Three in One to whom we belong.
