ENTREPRENEURSHIP continued
THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI
AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The University of Missouri
offers a campus-wide minor
in entrepreneurship. The
students who do this, along
with any other interested
parties, are encouraged to
join the Entrepreneurship
Alliance which prepares
students for both the risk and
reward of private enterprise.
Robert J. Trulaske
Sr. Dean
"Promoting entrepreneurship
among students instills an
interest in them that is important
for economic development.
We give them access to today's
entrepreneurs and business
owners who help guide them,
who potentially invest in them,
and who mentor them. We have
seen the results as our students
have started their own business
and launched new ideas- even
before they graduate."
ENTREPRENEURSHIP ALLIANCE
The Entrepreneurship
Alliance is housed in the
Trulaske College of Business
but is open to students
across campus. They
provide opportunities to
educate students on risk
tolerance, tenacity despite
failure, business planing
and networking, and other
activities that support
this work. As a part of this
organization, students learn
from local business leaders
and entrepreneurs. Students
take the entrepreneurship
education they receive in
the classroom to the next
level by participating in Pitch
Retreats where they work
with investors to hone their
ability to deliver a clear, crisp,
and dynamic pitch. They are
also taught self-confidence
and team building. The
Entrepreneurship Alliance
has also established an
advisory board to ensure
that their entrepreneurial
programming would
truly add value and stay
current. This board was
carefully crafted to ensure
that they have expertise
in manufacturing, online
marketing, services, retail and
many more.
Students are able to
compete at local, regional
and national competitions
and often win. The Trulaske
College of Business has
partnered with Columbia's
League of Innovators for
events such as Startup
Weekend and Sharktank.
Ultimately, the goal of the
University is to graduate
students fully prepared
to be the next generation
of entrepreneurs and
intrapreneurs- the drivers
of economic development.
They strive to place their
students in small business
incubators and serving
in internships with local
small businesses. They
believe that students
need to understand the
opportunities available
to them while they are
receiving their degree
and they push their
undergraduates, as well
as graduate students to
become engaged with
start-ups while still in
school. The Trulaske College
of Business focuses on 15
core competencies that
they believe will help their
students succeed in the
business world.
Xiaoke (Jessica) Cui is a
student at the University of
Missouri. She is dual enrolled
in the 150 hour BSAcc/MSAcc
Accountancy programs.
Originally from Chengdu,
China, she has lived in
Columbia since age 4. Jessica
is working with adjustable
high heel shoes.
Any woman who has
worn heels knows that
sometimes, you just need
some flats. This is exactly
what Jessica is offering. She
has developed a shoe that
goes from a half inch heel
all the way up to a 3.5 inch
heel. She came up with the
idea while on a site visit
with the Cornell Leadership
Program, an organization
with in the Trulaske College
of Business. Cui pitched
her idea at CLIMB’s Seed
Grant Competition where
she was awarded first place.
Regardless of her career
path, Jessica has learned a
lot from her experience with
entrepreneurship. She relies
on the competitive drive that
she developed in entering
competitions as well as the
ability to think outside of the
box.
Cornell Hall is home to the Trulaske
College of Business. TCOB is in the
nation's Top 50 undergraduate
programs. Students are offered
courses related to all business fields.
The Trulaske College of Business
teaches over 4,000 students making
the college the second-largest
academic division at Mizzou.
"i have gained the ability to think
fast on my feet and really think
of all the aspects of a businees
and take those into consideration
when making a decision. I've
been able to use my knowledge
of entrepreneurship in a variety
of different situations and i find
it is helpful in solving a problem
beyond a simple yes or no."
