setting a record of 33,805 on the first day of
steadily up for 18 years, are only slightly higher
its first freshmen class to be made up of more
Welcome to the City of Columbia where you will find yourself both in the
middle of Missouri and the country. Columbia is the county seat of
Boone County and was incorporated in 1826. Though the majority of its early
population was comprised of Kentuckians who brought slaves, equipment and
knowledge to establish farms, stores and law practices, foreign born migrants
also found their way to Columbia. They came as university faculty, attracted to
the area by the University of Missouri-Columbia, the first public university west of
the Mississippi.
Though the city was founded on education, its location also makes it an
attractive spot for businesses and travelers. Located on Interstate 70 and U.S.
Highway 63, Columbia is right in the middle of the state and the nation. Just a
couple hours drive from St. Louis and Kansas City, Columbians and visitors alike
enjoy our gently rolling terrain nestled in the scenic Missouri River Valley. Our
central location dictates a continental climate with moderately cold winters and
warm summers. With its close proximity to the interstate and U.S. highways, it is a
quick trip to travel to the state capitol in Jefferson City, or historic towns such as
Arrow Rock, Centralia and Hermann. Columbia is also 90 minutes away from the
famous Lake of the Ozarks.
Along with easy access to major roadways, driving around Columbia is also
simple due to its well planned thoroughfares. Commuters may experience
a 10 to 15 minute trip to work with few, if any, major traffic jams. Columbia Transit
System provides fully accessible mass transit services to major sections of our
community. There is also the Columbia Regional Airport, as well as shuttle
services to and from the airports in St. Louis and Kansas City. Additionally,
Columbia is just 30 miles from the Amtrak services in Jefferson City, or you can
take the bus from the local Greyhound bus station.
Columbia is Boone County’s largest population center and has received
numerous national awards and recognitions. Some of the enclosed
information pertains to Columbia specifically, while other facts are reported
county-wide. Whether you locate to Columbia, Ashland, Centralia or Hallsville,
their close proximity to one another enables all Boone Countians to take
advantage of the numerous amenities available throughout the county.
CLIMATE
Columbia, Missouri's climate, with its interior continental location, experiences moderately cold winters and warm summers
that are often humid. There are usually a few days of temperatures below zero during the winter months, but there have
been several winters when the temperature did not get this cold. Though the temperatures don't often reach below zero,
Columbia is no stranger to snow. Some snow falls each winter, but it is very unlikely that a snow cover will persist for more
than three weeks. The snowfall we experience is usually melted away quickly by our warm daytime temperatures so most
of the time when snow does fall, it stays on the ground for less than a week.
Periods of cold weather are usually interrupted by periods of at least a few mild days. It is not uncommon to find some
days with temperatures in the 60s in the midst of the winter months. March is the month in which substantial amounts of
snowfall are most likely. In the winter of 2011, Columbia experianced a record breaking snowfall that covered our city with
over 20 inches of soft white powder.
Temperatures of l00 degrees or more occur in most summers, but there have been several summers when temperatures
failed to reach this high. The late spring and early summer months produce more frequent and larger amounts of rain than
the other months of the year. Thus, in addition to being warm, these months are often quite humid.
By late summer smaller amounts of rain fall and rains occur less frequently, so by mid-August, the moisture in the top 2
feet of soil is often depleted. The average occurrence of the last temperature as cold as 32 degrees in spring is early April,
and the first 32 degree temperature in the fall occurs in late October.
Columbia is nestled in the heart of the Ozarks giving it the perfect opportunity to experience all four seasons. We have
moderate winters, chilly springs, warm summers, and colorful falls.
The local public school system is strong, routinely producing some of the largest
numbers of National Merit Scholars among Missouri public and private school
districts. This year, Rock Bridge High School had 13 semifinalists while Hickman had
two semifinalists for the program. Columbia Public School students continue to
achieve ACT test scores above the state and national averages. Additionally, the
percentage of students taking the college entrance exam remains steady. Recently
released ACT Profile Report, summarizing the performance of ACT test-takers in the
Class of 2010, indicates that Columbia students' average composite score is 23.3,
compared to 21.6 for Missouri test-takers and 21.0 for test-takers across the nation.
The Columbia Area Career Center has been granted the full five-year period of
continuing accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on
Accreditation and School Improvement. East year, district students take over 1,200
Advanced Placement exams with more than 80% eligible for credit.
Presidential Scholars Program was
established in 1964, by executive order of
President John F. Kennedy, to recognize
distinguished graduating high school
seniors. Hickman’s number of presidential
scholars is impressive, twice as many as
any private or public school in the state
and the most Presidential Scholars of any
What is a Kewpie and why are they
everywhere?
The Kewpie is the mascot for David H.
Hickman High School.Hickman is the
only known school with a Kewpie as its
mascot! A popular origin stoy is that at a
basketball game in 1913, a Kewpie doll
was placed at center court by the school's
secretary. The game was played around it
without the doll being broken. The team
had a claim to the Missouri
championship in 1914 as they had an
undefeated season. They have been the
Kewpies ever since.
COLUMBIA TRADITIONS
Columbia is not without its traditions.Every city has destinations, activities, and superstitions that help make it unique. The traditions
practiced here in Columbia range from grabbing a slice of pizza at Shakepeare's, "riding the Tiger," visiting the Magic Tree during
the holidays, making a trip to a local haunted house, to everything in between. Here are some of the traditions that help make
Columbia our home.
SHAKESPEARE'S PIZZA
Many Columbians will tell you that a trip isn't complete
without a slice of pizza from Shakespeare's. This
Columbia original is on the corner of Ninth St. and
Elm in the heart of Downtown. They make their own
fresh dough several times a day and top it with the
best variety of toppings you could ask for. With the
relaxed, family environment, everyone is sure to enjoy
their dining experiance. Whether it be in their uniquely
decorated dining area, or the patio when the weather
is right, there's always a seat for you at Shake's. Your
taste may be pepperoni, anchovies, cheese or something
completely new, Shakepeare's is sure to deliver.
Aside from their tasty pies, they are also a hub for
local fundraising. Many organizations take advantage
of their fundraising policies and are quite successful.
The origional location has also expanded to two more
branches here in Columbia.
The Magic Tree (pictured left)
has been in Columbia since
1995. Each year in the fall, the
branches are wrapped with mini
lights containing an ever more
elaborate spectacle that generates
increasing interest from
surrounding communities. In
2010, the Magic Tree was moved
to the Village of Cherry Hill
located on Scott Blvd. The Magic
Tree is viewable every evening
from 5-11pm. Adults and children alike will enjoy the beauty that is the
Magic Tree. You can find photos and directions at www.magic-tree.org
SPOOKY ATTRACTIONS
Columbia is home to Missouri's largest haunted house, FEARFEST. This spooky
attraction follows the legend of the previous owner, a Mortician and a little girl
named Sarah. This house of horrors is accompanied by a Zombie Safari where
thrill seekers can take down zombies on a haunted safari ride. More information
can be found at www.fearfesthauntedhouse.com
Several other fall attractions include local Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes and
much, much more.
The University of Missouri is known for several traditions.
These range from riding the tiger, to rubbing David R. Francis'
nose, to the lighting of Jesse Dome and Homecoming.
David R. Francis was Governor of Missouri and a great
proponent of the University of Missouri. A statue of him
stands on the south end of Francis Quadrangle. It is said
that when a student rubs his nose, they'll get an "A" on their
next exam. This tradition branches out into the community
by serving as a "good luck" symbol to those who know it.
Many people rub his nose to help our sporting teams win
or just to grab a memorable photo op. Because of this traditions
popularity, Francis' nose has been replaced several
times over the years.
Francis' nose is not the only tradition on the Quad. Students
walk into the school through the columns their
UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE
Missouri unemployment benefits provide
temporary compensation to those workers
meeting the eligibility requirements of Missouri law.
The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial
Relations administers its own unemployment
insurance program within Federal guidelines. The
value of unemployment benefits in Missouri differs
from that of other states because each state
unemployment office applies its own formulas and
limits when calculating the level of unemployment
compensation. The duration of unemployment
benefits in Missouri may also differ from that of other
states.
WORKERS COMPENSATION
Companies can offer this protection through a
private insurance carrier or they can become selfinsurers.
Premium rates vary, depending on the risks
associated with special occupations. As in most states,
the premium rates apply to an employee’s total annual
salary. The maximum weekly benefit for temporary
total disability, temporary partial disability, permanent
total disability and death is currently computed as
105% of the average weekly wage, determined
annually on July 1. Missouri's workers compensation
rates compare favorably with those in other states.
Though benefits for claimants in other states usually
increase automatically from year to year, in Missouri
benefits cannot be increased without the review and
approval of the state legislature.
PROPERTY TAX
• The personal property tax rate is $5.87 per $100 of assessed valuation
• Boone County's total real property tax rate is $6.40 per $100 assessed valuation (actual rate may vary upon location)
MISSOURI FRANCHISE TAX
1/30 of 1% or $0.33 per $1000 of par value outstanding shares and surplus or total assets
SALES TAX
Combined state and local rate is 7.55%. A higher sales tax rate, up to 1%, may apply within Transportation
Development Districts (TDDs). State exemptions include:
1) Machinery and equipment used in a manufacturing facility
2) Machinery that abates air or water pollution
3) Materials and supplies used to install the above
4) Electricity consumed in the manufacturing process
students who do this, along
with any other interested
parties, are encouraged to
We give them access to today's
who potentially invest in them,
ENTREPRENEURSHIP ALLIANCE
The Entrepreneurship
Alliance is housed in the
Trulaske College of Business
but is open to students
across campus. They
provide opportunities to
educate students on risk
tolerance, tenacity despite
failure, business planing
and networking, and other
activities that support
this work. As a part of this
organization, students learn
from local business leaders
and entrepreneurs. Students
take the entrepreneurship
education they receive in
the classroom to the next
level by participating in Pitch
Retreats where they work
with investors to hone their
ability to deliver a clear, crisp,
and dynamic pitch. They are
also taught self-confidence
and team building. The
Entrepreneurship Alliance
has also established an
advisory board to ensure
that their entrepreneurial
programming would
truly add value and stay
current. This board was
carefully crafted to ensure
that they have expertise
in manufacturing, online
marketing, services, retail and
many more.
Students are able to
compete at local, regional
and national competitions
and often win. The Trulaske
College of Business has
partnered with Columbia's
League of Innovators for
events such as Startup
Weekend and Sharktank.
Ultimately, the goal of the
University is to graduate
students fully prepared
to be the next generation
of entrepreneurs and
intrapreneurs- the drivers
of economic development.
They strive to place their
students in small business
incubators and serving
in internships with local
small businesses. They
believe that students
need to understand the
opportunities available
to them while they are
receiving their degree
and they push their
undergraduates, as well
as graduate students to
become engaged with
start-ups while still in
school. The Trulaske College
of Business focuses on 15
core competencies that
they believe will help their
students succeed in the
business world.
Xiaoke (Jessica) Cui is a
Any woman who has
what Jessica is offering. She
has developed a shoe that
her idea at CLIMB’s Seed
she was awarded first place.
Regardless of her career
