. . . magnificent surf beaches
Widemouth Bay: huge stretch of
Bude (see right) with beach shop/
café and good pub/restaurant. Little
cinema at Poundstock, 2 miles.
Challenging but stunning coastal
footpath to Crackington Haven
(see brochure, page 173), 9 miles.
… 200 yards back from Widemouth
beach, a semi-detached bungalow set
at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, recently
(2012) overhauled and made smart. At
the back, an enclosed garden sheltered
by high hedging with a raised sun patio
(table/chairs) and a tiny unfenced pond.
Three steps down to front door; entrance hall (space for boots/coats) leading to
open-plan living/dining/fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave,
fridge-freezer, double-oven electric range) with long view to the sea, TV/DVD and
woodburner. Three bedrooms – two double, one with limited clothes-hanging space
and one with 5’ bed and en suite shower-room (suite), and a twin (linkable to 6’ double);
a must for beach/surf enthusiasts.
Supplement 2 2012
Bude: small, friendly resort with two
magnificent sand/surf beaches, natural
sea water bathing pool, lots of grassy
running-about space behind them, and
canal through the middle for boating,
coarse fishing and swans. Shops, tennis
courts, indoor swimming pool/sports
centre, golf, riding - an easy walk from
everywhere. Surfing tuition/hire. Superb
cliff-walking coast.
… in Bude in a quiet close, 400 yards from
Crooklets Beach (huge expanse of golden sand,
rock pools) and the coastal path, a modern house on three floors with long views over
to Maer Downs. At the front, private parking space and, at the back, neat enclosed lawn
with patio (deck chairs). Golf course, shops, cafés and restaurants are a few hundred
yards away, with Bude’s second huge beach (Summerleaze), 800 yards.
Inside, recently (2012) decorated and refurbished, making this house light, fresh and
very comfortable. Hall and ground-floor twin bedroom (no clothes-hanging space),
opposite a brand new shower-room (suite); plenty of space for coats/shoes and
bed) with patio windows opening to balustrade, en suite shower-room (suite) and small
TV, and a twin (2’6” x 5’10” beds); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). A great place to
stay and manageable without a car. Coach/bus stop, 700 yards.
Romantic bathroom (suite with separate shower). A picture-postcard cottage, both
inside and out, in a fantastic spot for coastal exploring at any time of year.
… 150 yards up from Mousehole’s bustling little centre of shops, pubs, cafés and pretty
harbour is The Queach, a very traditional stone-and-slate cottage with stunning
right-out-to-sea views. A few granite steps and a pretty bit of front garden raise it from
the lane; at the back, steep stone steps lead up to a little terrace (table/chairs, barbecue)
with great views out to sea over lichen-covered rooftops.
A neat porch facilitates boots; front door into width-of-cottage living room with TV/DVD,
StAR RAtInGS
We have star rated all the properties in our brochures since we started in 1982
and have been pleased how enthusiastically you (our holidaymakers) have welcomed
our efforts to quantify the ‘feel’ and ‘comfort’ of a holiday home. Our star ratings
are unique in that they rely enormously heavily on the experience of the inspectors,
members of our staff who have seen hundreds of houses. They check everything we
think might be relevant to your enjoyment of your holiday, from basic cleanliness to
whether the colour of the curtains goes with the duvet covers, and then they grade the
property on the basis of all of these things. They remain, however, strictly personal
assessments, in the best of faith, of interior quality and ambience only. They have
nothing to do with the outward appearance or situation. Nor are they necessarily directly
related to the quality or quantity of ‘gadgets’. Tick boxes ? ... well, some, yes, but mostly
it’s about ambience, tone and comfort, all looked at with a good dollop of common
sense.
Properties rated 5 star now would have been miles off the scale 10 years ago and, as
standards continue to charge upwards, we constantly review to ensure that our star
ratings remain useful. The greatest praise of them is, perhaps, the degree to which our
customers of many years tell us they rely on our star ratings ABOVE ALL ELSE in their
search for a perfect holiday place. The fact they have been appreciated by so many
people for so many years makes us feel we are doing something right.
HOW TO BOOK
Helping you find the perfect place for your holiday
Tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll do our very best to find you a place for your
holiday which suits you perfectly. We regularly visit all the properties we let. When you
ring, you’ll be able to speak to someone who has been to the property or properties in
which you’re interested. They’ll use their experience and knowledge of those places to
help you choose one which matches your hopes and expectations. They’ll steer you away
from those they consider unsuitable and direct you towards those they can confidently
recommend on the basis of what you tell them. Please use their local knowledge to help
you make a well informed choice. We try to make booking a cottage through Helpful
