prettiest large villages in exceptional
countryside, its castle on a wooded

by wooded hillsides leading from
Exmoor’s high lands via Dunster

a quiet no through lane which leads
down to a stream and ford, is this pretty
Exmoor stone cottage, one end of a
terrace of three. To one side, a well planted, enclosed, gravelled garden with arbour,
barbecue and table/chairs.

Halberton: village (14th cent. church, pub, farm shop with seasonal café)
through which the Grand Western Canal passes from its start 4 miles away
in Tiverton (shops, leisure centre, barge trips). Fishing; boat, canoe, bicycle
and mobility buggy hire locally. Sampford Peverell (pubs, shop, slipway,
Tiverton Parkway mainline station), 2 mile walk via towpath. Golf, 2 miles.
… peacefully situated right on the canal bank in Halberton and 250 yards from the pub,
a large, detached house with fantastic views along the waterway to rolling green
fields beyond. On its own at the end of a quiet no through lane (leading to canal only),
this is a lovely tranquil location with a good-sized, private garden, mostly lawned with
paved terrace (table/chairs), summerhouse and gate (lockable) to the waterside where
you have your own little sitting-out area (picnic benches) alongside the towpath - a great
spot to relax into canalside life and enjoy watching the passing boats, walkers, cyclists

in the tiny, pretty hamlet of Taw
Green, is this sweet little detached
cottage converted from a barn and
tucked just behind the friendly owners’ former mill house. At the back, a level shared
garden (table/chairs) with direct frontage to the river Taw (bench).
Inside, bright and spacious with vaulted ceiling, botanical paintings and good furniture.
Four stone steps up to open-plan living/dining/newly fitted kitchen (slimline dishwasher,

rural Devon, 2 miles from Crediton (see brochure, page 46). Lovely walks.
Easy access to Exeter (city amenities), 7 miles. Sandy beach at Exmouth
(see brochure, page 62), 22 miles.

... off a quiet lane, on the edge of the exceptional Cadhay estate (G100, see brochure
page 57, tours on Fridays) in Ottery St Mary (town centre, 1 mile), a smart, detached,
single-storey, red brick cottage. Once the estate’s cider press, now completely
renovated and refurbished, everything done to a very high standard with 21st cent.

converted into excellent apartments. Stunning views of sea/shipping
(sometimes warships). Long drive leads to it. Pretty terraced gardens, rock
pool beach (windsurfing, fishing, low-tide sand). Kingsand/Cawsand (see
brochure, page 146), 2 miles; Mount Edgcumbe Park, ¼ mile by coast path;
pedestrian ferry to Plymouth, 2; car ferry, 10. Laundry and payphone on site.
… on the top floor of unique Fort Picklecombe, a comfortable apartment with stunning
180 degree sea views spanning Plymouth Sound to the east and along Cornwall’s
coast to the west. Lots of shipping activity and changing weather moods make this
a fascinating place to be. Binoculars are
strongly recommended, as too are stout
boots in order to enjoy the lovely coastal
walk to the pub at Kingsand and the
beautiful grounds of Mount Edgcumbe.

more cottages (residential) and the original farmhouse where the owners and their young
family live; they’re happy to show you the few sheep, pigs and chickens they keep in the
surrounding fields and sometimes you can help with feeding or egg collecting. Walks from
the door (stock permitting, wellies recommended) in rolling fields and private woodland

part-thatched, detached cottage. To the front, a tiny, well stocked cottage garden; to
the rear, an enclosed, private, level lawned garden (summerhouse, table/chairs) with
wonderful rural views.
Inside, bright and utterly charming, renovated with great attention to detail and furnished
with much care. Back door straight into slate-floored kitchen/dining room with beams,

inside and out, in a fantastic spot for coastal exploring at any time of year.
… 150 yards up from Mousehole’s bustling little centre of shops, pubs, cafés and pretty
harbour is The Queach, a very traditional stone-and-slate cottage with stunning
right-out-to-sea views. A few granite steps and a pretty bit of front garden raise it from
the lane; at the back, steep stone steps lead up to a little terrace (table/chairs, barbecue)
with great views out to sea over lichen-covered rooftops.
A neat porch facilitates boots; front door into width-of-cottage living room with TV/DVD,
woodburner and two windows looking directly out to sea, inviting you to stop, sit
and enjoy the ever-changing moods of sea and sky; step down to smart, spacious
kitchen/dining room (slimline dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave) with woodburner
and door (5’7” lintel) to back garden. Stairs up to three bedrooms – at the front, two
double with fabulous sea views and, at the back, a twin; bathroom (suite plus bathshower).

We have star rated all the properties in our brochures since we started in 1982
and have been pleased how enthusiastically you (our holidaymakers) have welcomed
our efforts to quantify the ‘feel’ and ‘comfort’ of a holiday home. Our star ratings
are unique in that they rely enormously heavily on the experience of the inspectors,
members of our staff who have seen hundreds of houses. They check everything we
think might be relevant to your enjoyment of your holiday, from basic cleanliness to
whether the colour of the curtains goes with the duvet covers, and then they grade the
property on the basis of all of these things. They remain, however, strictly personal
assessments, in the best of faith, of interior quality and ambience only. They have
nothing to do with the outward appearance or situation. Nor are they necessarily directly
related to the quality or quantity of ‘gadgets’. Tick boxes ? ... well, some, yes, but mostly
it’s about ambience, tone and comfort, all looked at with a good dollop of common
sense.
Properties rated 5 star now would have been miles off the scale 10 years ago and, as
standards continue to charge upwards, we constantly review to ensure that our star
ratings remain useful. The greatest praise of them is, perhaps, the degree to which our
customers of many years tell us they rely on our star ratings ABOVE ALL ELSE in their
search for a perfect holiday place. The fact they have been appreciated by so many
people for so many years makes us feel we are doing something right.

necessities but contains little or nothing that is new or smart.
