Officially ‘outstanding’ news from the West!
This is why James won...
James arrived at Helpful Holidays in July 2000. He turned up for interview in a suit slightly
too large and with hands that wouldn’t stop shaking. Despite his nerves, his answers to our
questions revealed an understanding and natural talent for ‘customer service’ at odds
with our expectations (he was 19 at the time). In October last year he was honoured and
gained great credit for the firm by winning the South West Tourism ‘Outstanding Customer
Service Award’. These awards, known locally as the ‘Tourism Oscars’, recognise
outstanding achievement. Whilst there are a clutch of them covering different areas of
endeavour, we couldn’t have been more pleased to win in this particular category.
7.15pm: HH office in Chagford, a Friday in February. Long after most people have packed up and gone home for the
weekend, James leads the evening shift. Tongue in cheek, the company jokes about itself as a dating agency, matching
holidaymakers’ dreams to the best available accommodation. At 7.15 on a Friday night, after a long week, most people would
like to be doing some real dating or at least be at home. Only a few people will push the boat out to really help at this stage.
A call comes in, James answers. A customer, on a hands-free mobile in his car – sounding jolly, with children in the background.
“I know it’s a bit late,” he says, “but have you got anything for tonight? We’re just west of Swindon, heading your way –
can you help?”
Without pause James is on the case. “How many are you? Where would you like to stay? How old are the children? What
do you like to do on holiday? What sort of property do you like? Have you ever been to the West Country before? - (no)”.
Within a few minutes he’s collected the critical details. “Fine,” he says, “I’ll call you back.”
Experience is now everything. The computer systems may be saying ‘yes’, but the chances of raising caretakers or keyholders
at 7.15pm on a Friday in February are slim. Luckily the customers have chosen HH and got James who knows;
which cottages will be ready to go at a couple of hours’ notice and which won’t; and - because he’s visited them - which
will be lovely to stay in with 3 young children; how far the walk to the sea is (whether it’s steep and there’s a beach) or if
there are lambs at a particular farm because he was chatting to the owner last week and remembers she told him she’d
been up all night lambing.
7.30pm: He makes some choices and starts calling round owners. No reply from the first three; the fourth is going out for
the evening – sorry. Fifth, sixth and seventh - answerphone. Eighth – could probably do it but must just check with the caretaker.
Ninth and tenth say ‘yes’.
8.15pm: Empty office. The mobile signal keeps breaking up and the children are making one hell of a racket in the back
of the car. Patiently James explains the options, highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of his recommendations.
They thank him and say they’ll call back after they’ve discussed it.
8.30pm: They can’t choose – “Which would you go for, James?” – he chooses, confident in his choice – the customer
feedback for this cottage is superb and he loved the place when he visited it last year.
8.45pm: James calls the delighted owner, gives her the details of the party and explains the circumstances.
8.55pm: … and is once again on the phone to his holidaymakers.
“Where are you now?” asks James.
“Uuuuummm, just coming up to the Exeter Services I think.”
“OK, have you got anything you can write the directions to the cottage on?”
“No sorry, just give us the directions – we’ll remember them”. Wry smile from James – no chance.
“I’ll talk you in”, he says, “Stay on the main road for another 15 miles, following the signs for Plymouth. When you see a
signpost for Dartmouth and Totnes, turn off and call me again.”
9.30pm: Holidaymakers call back.
“OK, we’re off the main road and heading towards Totnes.”
“Good …”
James talks them in, along South Hams lanes in the dark. The noise from the back has subsided; in fact the whole car is
quite quiet now. They round the final bend. “You should be able to see the cottage right now,”, says James. The reply comes
as an explosion of noise down the line as the 7 and 5 year olds shout, “There it is, there it is!”
“Thanks mate – we’ve made it. That was great. Bye,” are the final words before Dad hangs up.
9.55pm: – The other cottage owners are stood down. Quick calls are possible to the answerphones of the fifth, sixth and
seventh, but the eighth wants to chat a bit and James is amiable and charming, like he was when his customers first called
more than two and a half hours earlier.
10.20pm: – Computer off, lock up office. It’s now
nearly 2 hours since he should have gone home.
Just time for a well earned pint at the pub.
This is the HH approach. Frank, helpful,
knowledgeable, thoughtful and diligent. We
are motivated by a sincere conviction that
the West Country is a wonderful place to
come on holiday, that choosing where to
stay should not be a lottery and that by
checking out places beforehand and
knowing them well we can help you choose
a place that’s just right, for you.
Whenever you ask we hope to help you find
a good place for your holidays in 2006.
SUPPLEMENT I 2006: Civil War in the kitchen! . . .
. . . ramblers’ refuge
Brentor: hamlet (ancient cottages around
its church) on the western side of
Dartmoor. Famous for its even older
St Michael de Rupe church clinging
precariously to the summit of a massive
volcanic outcrop with probably the finest
views in Devon overlooking Dartmoor, Exmoor, Plymouth Sound and even over the border to Bodmin Moor.
Recent English Heritage investigations have revealed Iron Age earthworks defending the site.
Chagford (see brochure, page 110):
... 2 miles from Chagford, 1 from the open moor, a
thatched, detached, Grade I listed, medieval, granite
Dartmoor longhouse, stone mullion-windowed, full of
history. The Civil War was fought through it,
Roundheads besieged in the kitchen. Outside, 130
acres of farmland, a clean farmyard in front, a large
mainly lawn garden behind with patio (table/chairs).
… in Brentor, a detached stone/slate cottage, converted from an old bake-house. At the front and back, a small, neat, enclosed
paved garden with table/chairs, barbecue, a tiny leat running along the back wall and views across fields to St Michael’s. Inside,
very well done, with tiled floors/rugs downstairs and polished floorboards/rugs upstairs. Front door to
hall with shower-room (suite); roomy fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier,
microwave, fridge-freezer, electric oven, gas hob) with table and chairs; archway through to
attractive, comfortable living room with open fire. Stairs up to three bedrooms – a double, a twin
(limited clothes hanging space, TV), and a single; bathroom (suite). Payphone. No smoking. Great
place to chill out; brilliant for walkers.
… high in farmland, a mile from Noss Mayo and
1
⁄2 mile from the beach at Stoke (splendid cliffs,
coast path, cove beach), a little terraced
cottage, stylishly furnished by young interior-designer owner. It is one of a number well converted
from Grade II listed farm buildings, sharing a 1 1 ⁄2 acre garden (barbecue, picnic table), games/
SUPPLEMENT I 2006: Rower Fort
The view
The tower is on 6 levels:
Basement: kitchenette (cooker, butler sink)/games room (table
tennis, darts, TV/video) with vaulted ceiling and oil ‘woodburner’; loo
(washbasin); utility room (washing machine, tumble drier).
Ground floor: entrance hall/sitting room with sofa/chairs, enormous stone
fireplace (open fire) and door to farmhouse.
First floor: master double bedroom (5’ bed) with smart en suite bathroom
(suite with cast iron roll-top bath, colourful Mexican basin, Italian
marble tiles).
Second floor: sitting room (sofas, music system, home cinema,
CD/MP3/radio and door to farmhouse) and small double bedroom
(access to one side of bed only) with phone boxes as wardrobe and shower
(no loo).
Third floor: small gallery double bedroom (access to one side of ornate
iron bed only) above the sitting room (screened by curtains and a mahogany
oriental screen) with en suite bathroom (suite with short cast iron roll-top
bath and stunning views down the valley from floor to ceiling window).
Stockland: thriving and pretty village (church, PO,
cricket ground, good food pub, annual Spring
Bank Holiday fair) with thatched cottages in rolling
countryside, 8 miles north-east of Honiton (see
brochure page 46, mainline railway station) and 4
miles from the nearest main road. Axminster (small
town renowned for carpets), 9 miles; Exeter airport,
16; the sea/beaches at Branscombe, 12; pretty
Lyme Regis, 14; and Sidmouth (attractive
Regency resort), 17.
… 2 miles north-east of Stockland stands Rower Fort,
part stone castellated tower and part thatched farmhouse.
The farmhouse was formerly in the estate of Sir
Francis Drake; its folly castellations (formerly the gamekeeper’s
lookout) were first built around 1827. The original
tower was mostly destroyed by fire, and rebuilt about
10 years ago. From its elevated position (600’ above the
surrounding countryside) it commands outstanding
panoramic views over the Blackdown Hills and down to
the south coast. On top of the tower, within the battlements,
is an open-air hot tub, the most remarkably sited one
we’ve ever come across, from which you can gaze over the
countryside. There are 12 acres to roam (woods/fields),
including a nature trail, a terrace (table/chairs, barbecue)
from which to enjoy wonderful views, an enormous (has to
be seen to be believed) adventure tree house/climbing
frame, and an original World War II tank on which to
clamber. Sounds fun? Read on …
Inside, the Fort is even more extraordinary – eclectic
in style, totally eccentric and wacky, original and
imaginative, with state-of-the-art music systems and full
Sky TV package. Entry is from the terrace via large oak
doors to the ground floor of the Rapunzel-like tower, which
gives access to the farmhouse at ground and
second floor levels.
Battlements: stairs (lockable) up to the battlements with the hot tub, sound
system and 360° views.
The main living area is in the farmhouse, on 3 floors:
Ground floor: large, English oak fitted kitchen/diner (Aga plus electric hob,
dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, Belfast sink) with farmhouse
table; loo (washbasin); and comfy living room with enormous oak-beamed
inglenook fireplace (open fire).
First floor: two bedrooms
Large double (5’ bed)
A twin
A bathroom (suite)
Second floor: two more bedrooms in the eaves
A double (steps up to 5’ oak platform bed) with smart en suite bathroom
(suite with cast iron roll-top bath, Italian tiles) and door into the tower’s second
floor sitting room
A twin with en suite bathroom (suite).
That’s seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, one shower and seven loos.
The owner (who lives in a cottage beside the fort) can arrange many activities
including clay pigeon shooting, riding, fishing, cycling, on or off-road go-carting, and,
by arrangement, a flight in a light aircraft or a ride in an historic military vehicle.
This is a quite unique and special place to stay,
particularly good for adventurous families and
for those who want somewhere different
for celebrating. Catering (frozen meals) by
arrangement. No smoking. Phone. Cautionary
Deposit £150. Arrival after 4pm.
Milborne St Andrew:
small village (church,
valley below the great
chalk downland arc of
the Dorset hills midway
between Dorchester
(county capital) and
Blandford Forum
(handsome Georgian
market town), 8 miles
from each. Lovely
countryside. The ‘World
Heritage’ south coast at beautiful Lulworth Cove, 17
miles; Poole and Bournemouth, 15 miles; Weymouth
(Georgian resort town with sandy beach), 18 miles.
... down a quiet lane, opposite the sports field (children’s play area) in Milborne St Andrew and beside a brook, is this pretty,
early 19th cent. detached cottage, full of character, nooks and crannies, quirky, comfortable. Double gates to a gravelled courtyard
screened by a high fence from the tiny, but secluded, lawn with brick patio (table, chairs, barbecue). From a little porch,
the low front door opens directly into the comfortable living room (open fire). Dining room with beams, flagstoned floor, dresser,
large inglenook fireplace (gas ‘woodburner’); downstairs shower-room (suite); a purposely ‘old-fashioned’ looking fitted
kitchen (microwave) with enamel sink, gas cooker, mixture of wooden-topped cupboards, open
shelves, dresser base, and large utility room (dishwasher, washer-drier). Upstairs, three bedrooms:
open metal spiral staircase from the living room up to a bedroom above it with two single
beds; second staircase leads up to a small double (access to one side of bed only), and the pretty
master double with en suite bathroom (suite with roll-top bath) and interconnecting door to the bedroom
above the living room. Outside, large, secure shed (freezer) for bike storage. No smoking.
Sandbanks: sandy beach-lined peninsula at the mouth of
Poole’s enormous and magnificent natural harbour,
thronged with yachts, used by bigger ships also, including
ferries to France. Sandbanks, with beach shops, pub, cafés
and restaurants, is reckoned among the south coast’s top
sea bathing places and is excellent for windsurfing and sailing
(still unspoilt creeks to explore); bikes and boats for hire.
Ferries cross the harbour to Purbeck (more miles of sandy
beaches, sand dunes) and pretty Studland via Brownsea
Island (Nat. Trust: woods, gardens, bird sanctuary and red
squirrels). Poole town was popular with pirates in its early
(13th cent.) days, its harbour with smugglers. Its oldest part,
behind the quay, is a ‘conservation area’, mainly Georgian.
It has an arts centre and famous pottery, good parks,
outstanding gardens (Compton Acres), fine golf course.
Bigger resort Bournemouth (good aquarium, IMAX cinema)
is its adjoining neighbour. Nearby inland, beautiful Dorset
farmland, Corfe Castle (spectacular ruins), the New Forest
and Beaulieu with its abbey and vintage cars.
… a detached dormer bungalow just a stone’s throw from the
beaches, ferries, shops etc. in a quiet, residential road in the middle
of Sandbanks. Plenty of parking space and reasonable-sized lawned
garden. Inside, recently refurbished, comfortable, light and restful with
cream and beige décor. Hall with original pine floor with rugs, off which
a spacious living room (open fire) with cream leather suite and
French windows to garden; double bedroom with iron bedstead, en
suite loo (washbasin) and French windows to garden; family bathroom
(suite plus hand-shower) down one step; dining room with books and
videos, and arch to smart, beech fitted kitchen with double oven and
ceramic hob, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave and door to secluded
paved patio (table/chairs, barbecue) and an outbuilding with fridge-freezer. Stairs (narrow treads,
handrail, stairgate) up to two more bedrooms – double with en suite bathroom (suite plus bathshower)
and a room with 2’6’’ twin beds plus another single bed with truckle and TV (small b&w).
church with fine Norman tower, nearby farm shop) 2 miles north
east of Frome (charming market town on the River Frome, dating
miles.
The Selwood (Arrow 1 – W5); Aldheim Cottage (Arrow 2 – W6); The
Frome (Arrow 3 – W7) and Monmouth Retreat (Arrow 4 – W8)
… a row of four attractive, newly built, stone and timber-clad cottages
down a quiet country lane overlooking open countryside just 2 miles
from Frome and Beckington. They are very tastefully furnished in a
contemporary style, uncluttered and comfortable, with underfloor heating,
and share the 3 acre grounds (picnic tables, unfenced fishing ponds – rods
provided) with the helpful owners, who live opposite. Adjoining Monmouth
Retreat is a communal laundry room/library (two washing machines,
tumble drier, DVDs, CDs, books, games). Bicycles available.
A narrow paved passage behind the cottages leads to each. The front doors
open into a little hall with downstairs loo (washbasin); smallish but very
smart fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, freezer, halogen hob);
living/dining room (comfy sofas, music centre, attractive modern glassfronted
fire) with large French windows to a small patio at the front
(table/chairs, barbecue), good for sunsets over
the fields. Upstairs, two bedrooms with sloping
ceilings – a double and a twin; contemporary
bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and freestanding
bowl basin). Internet access by
wireless transmitter for laptop computers.
No smoking.
… in the heart of Dunster, by the church (bells ring
beautifully every quarter of an hour, day and night)
and its gardens, an elegant first and second floor
apartment in a large converted Georgian endterrace
house. It has views over ancient rooftops to
the castle and distant wooded hills. The friendly
owner has a bridal-design studio on the ground floor.
At the side of the house, a little gated walled footpath
(full of flowers) leads to the front door and stairs up
to a large, open-plan, L-shaped living/dining/fitted
kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave), all very civilised with
comfortable chairs/sofas, nice pieces of furniture and Portmerion china: you can observe the world
pass by on the donkey-sized street below. Stairs continue up to the second floor and three
bedrooms – a double with long views over rooftops to the sea and en suite bathroom (suite with
corner bath plus hand-shower), a room with two single beds, and a single room (Velux window);
. . . ‘best-kept’ Berrynarbour . . . . . . Saunton’s sand
SUPPLEMENT I 2006
The view
Berrynarbour: a particularly pretty little village (frequent winner of
best-kept village award) with church, good pub, PO/shop, tea
rooms, whitewashed cob cottages, many thatched, a mile from the
coast (cliffs, coast path, coves) and 2 miles from Combe Martin (see brochure, page 25). Golf at Ilfracombe
(smallish resort town), about 2 miles. Woolacombe’s great sand/surf beaches, about 7 miles. Exmoor National
Park, 5 miles.
... beside a quiet lane, a mile from Berrynarbour, 1 ⁄2 mile (as the crow flies) from the sea and 2 1 ⁄2 miles (road) from the nearest
beach, on high ground and surrounded by farmland, a fine, large, detached house with superb panoramic views (see
above) along the coast. Gravelled driveway to one side and a completely enclosed lawn garden (table/chairs, barbecue),
sheltered by hedgerow and trees, at the back. Inside, the living room is on the first floor to take full advantage of the splendid
views; floor-level arched windows on the seaward side, high arched wood ceiling and open fire make this a very pleasant room.
On the ground floor, a smart fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer) with
table/chairs at the window end, looking out to sea across fields; dining room with inglenook
(ornamental) full of potted plants; twin bedroom with en suite bathroom (suite). Back upstairs
(stairgates), three further bedrooms - a double plus single with sea views, another double, and a
bunk room, all prettily decorated. Bathroom (suite with corner-bath plus bath-shower). Four
bedrooms in all, each with own TV. Double garage (washing machine, tumble drier). Payphone.
An extremely comfortable family house, very private and peaceful.
Heanton Punchardon: hamlet (church, some
ancient, but mostly 20th cent. dwellings) on
high land looking over soft, rolling farmland, 3
miles from Saunton’s wonderful sand/surf
beach and excellent golf course. More superb
sand/surf beaches at Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe. Nearest
good selection of shops/pubs at Braunton, 1 mile. Barnstaple (bustling
market town, see brochure page 26), 4 miles. Exmoor, 10 miles.
… in Heanton Punchardon, a handsome, very spacious detached house, with
lovely long rural views, quietly tucked away in a cul-de-sac. At the front, open
shrub/flower borders and wide driveway; at the back, about 1 ⁄2 acre of well kept, mostly
lawned garden with patio, steps up to a picnic area and roly-poly areas (keep an eye
on toddlers), approached from the enclosed patio over a little bridge spanning an
ornamental pond. Inside, comfortable and well furnished, with emphasis on quality.
Front door to hall with loo (washbasin); living room with exposed granite, oak beams, ‘living flame’
gas stove and sliding doors to patio; second living room (games, books, CD player) and dining
room, both opening to a traditional oak-framed conservatory with small courtyard beyond
(table/chairs); large, smart fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble
drier, microwave, fridge-freezer) with sliding doors to patio. From hall, stairs up to landing and
three bedrooms – double (5’ bed) with en suite shower-room (suite), and two twin; bathroom (suite
plus bath-shower). No smoking. An excellent home, well positioned for beach or moor.
. . . Bude bustle . . .
. . . a secret in Kingsand
SUPPLEMENT I 2006
Bude (see brochure, page 151):
… in the heart of Bude, beside a private no
through road, a handsome, early Victorian,
south-facing terraced house on three levels,
brilliantly positioned 300 yards from an excellent
sand/surf beach and the coastal path, and
100 yards from the off-licence/shops/restaurants/tennis
courts of this popular seaside town.
At the front, a neat walled garden; at the back, an enclosed walled terraced
garden with steps up to a slate-paved area with swing-seat
shaded by an old fig tree, and gate to back lane. Very useful, enclosed
side access, excellent for storing bikes/wetsuits/surfboards.
Inside, a great deal of time and money has been spent to make this an
extremely comfortable, relaxing home. Sunny front porch to wide hall;
large, depth-of-house, elegant, sunny living/dining room with big bay
windows, piano (tuned), good leather sofas; across the hall, second
more cosy living room with open fire and bay windows; at the back,
with door to garden, an excellent fitted kitchen (gas Aga, dishwasher,
fridge-freezer, microwave, electric hob) with tiled floor and large
table with bench seats, through to utility room with washing machine,
tumble drier, fridge-freezer, sink and a cosy loo in the boiler room;
door to stairs up to a snug for youngsters (DVD, videos, games).
From the hall, stairs up to first floor landing and five bedrooms – two
double with zip-linked 6’ beds, big windows and glimpse of the beach,
one with smart en suite bathroom (suite plus separate shower), one
with en suite shower-room (suite); a third double (washbasin); a single
(washbasin); and one with a child’s cabin bed (ladder steps access).
Bathroom (suite plus separate
shower). More stairs
up to huge attic bedroom
with 5’ double and 5’6” lintel
to en suite bathroom (suite
plus bidet). No smoking.
Cautionary Deposit £100.
Excellent house with
reserved parking back
and front. Brilliant for
beach/surf enthusiasts.
Kingsand (see brochure, page 123):
… in Kingsand, 50 yards from the coastal footpath and 150 yards up
from the beach, one of Kingsand’s best-kept secrets, a Grade II listed
house on four levels, dating from the 18th cent. when it and its semidetached
neighbour were the gunpowder magazine store for Amherst
Battery. Now a lovely home, with original panelling throughout and
fantastic sea views from every room with the exception of the cosy
sitting/games room and lobby. This is a superbly positioned house,
refurbished with much love and care by the owners of R26 (see
brochure, page 124). In front, looking right out to sea, a neat garden
(rare for this village) with table/chairs – you can spend hours just
watching a huge variety of shipping glide past (binoculars essential!).
Access for you and the friendly neighbours is along a short, gravelled
garden path from a lane. Three steps up to the hall; pretty, light, airy
living room with great view and woodburner; large fitted kitchen (dishwasher,
fridge-freezer, microwave) with laminate floor, dining
table/chairs and another great sea view.
Stairs down to lobby with flagstone floor; beamed, cosy sitting room
with games, toys, 2nd TV; and a large utility room with washing
machine, tumble drier; from the lobby, a door to civilised outdoor loo
and exterior hose – useful for hosing down sandy children, wetsuits
etc.
Stairs from hall up to first floor and two bedrooms (both with brilliant
views) - a double, and a room with two single beds and en suite
shower-room (suite); more stairs up to two more bedrooms - a double
and a twin, both with marble washbasins - and a bathroom (suite plus
hand-shower), all with terrific sea views!
Owners happy to help carry luggage -
small cars can be driven to garden gates,
but it is awkward – best park 30 yards
away to load/unload. A great place, but
not suitable for anyone with mobility
problems.
Philleigh: little village on
the Roseland Peninsula
(church, pub) dating from
pre-conquest when Earl
Harold paid 10 shillings tax
for the whole parish. It is on
one of the little lanes leading
to the King Harry ferry (2
miles) over the River Fal to
Trelissick Gardens (Nat.
Trust), Truro and Falmouth
(see brochure, page 144).
St Mawes (see brochure,
page 142 and above), 6
miles.
… a mile east of Philleigh, set back from a lane, a
converted Victorian chapel and school house all by
itself, with lovely long rural/creek views. In front, a
scrunchy gravel parking area/garden; at the back, a path
to a low fenced, lawned garden (table/chairs, barbecue)
with raised fish pond (2’ depth – toddlers must be
supervised) and meadows beyond. You have two-thirds of this big house (righthand
side). The friendly owners live next door with separate access. Unlike many
conversions, the interior has not been completely altered, there are still odd nooks and
crannies and Gothic arches as reminders of its origins.
From the front garden, tall original arched doors to outer hall with pew and tiled floor
into inner hall with loo (washbasin); four steps down to large dining room (two tables);
two steps down to big, tiled fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble
drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, two gas cookers) with slate floor, double Belfast sink
and back door to garden access. From the hall, stairs up to very large living room with
huge inglenook (woodburner), books, games and gorgeous long rural views. On the
same floor, three bedrooms – a pretty double, a single and
a twin, the latter two with washbasins; bathroom (suite plus
hand-shower). More stairs to second floor and four more bedrooms – a single with washbasin and
Velux window; two double, both with en suite bathrooms (suites plus hand-showers), one with Velux
window; and one with two single beds, washbasin and Velux window; bathroom (suite plus handshower).
No smoking. Lovely big family house.
Crantock: pretty village (some thatch, PO,
Trewellard: former tin
cliff coast (fantastic
walking) and within 2
miles of a pretty cove
beach (sandy mid
rocks). Geevor Mine
(closed 1990) turned
excellent museum, 1 ⁄4
mile at Pendeen (see brochure, page 183). Much prehistory
all around, including a fogou and quoits. St Just-in-
Penwith (see brochure, page 183), 2 miles. Magnificent
surf/sand beach at Sennen, about 6 miles. St Ives and
Minack Theatre, both about 13 miles away.
coat/boot cupboard; living/dining room with high, exposed ceiling beams,
books/games, CD player; neat fitted kitchen with dishwasher, washing
machine, microwave; loo (washbasin). Stairs from hall up to two attractive
bedrooms, both double, one with 5’ bed and TV,
and one with limited access to one side of the bed;
bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Phone. No
smoking. Spring water (tested). Wonderfully
tucked away, yet central for coast, shops and
activities.
… in Trewellard, an early 19th cent., typically Cornish, granite terraced cottage, 100 yards from the B3306, and just 150
yards to the pub (good food). At the front, a neat granite-walled paved garden and, at the back, a paved courtyard (picnic table)
with useful sheds for bikes/surfboards and space for parking one vehicle (from narrow back lane). Inside, cosy and comfy with
lovely long views from upstairs across rugged hedgerow meadows to the sea. From garden, front door to hall with tiled floor;
living room with multi-fuel stove and exposed narrow ceiling beams; a snug with stone fireplace
(ornamental), exposed ceiling beams, games/toys, books; step down to kitchen (washing machine,
microwave, fridge-freezer) with good solid dining table/chairs, lovely old original cast-iron
range (not in use), lowish ceiling beams (5’10”), and back door (careful, 5’3” lintel!) to courtyard. Up
