SUPPLEMENT I 2006: ‘holy well’ village . . . . . . wriggling River Seaton Seaton: the River Seaton wriggles through beautiful woods down to the sea at Seaton, a hamlet with PO/shop, pub (good food), beach café, bistro and coarse sand beach. Country park nearby with butterfly garden, walks and children’s play area. 1 1 ⁄2 mile away, a monkey sanctuary. … about a mile up from Seaton on the Looe side (see brochure, page 137), a 1970s, light and airy, detached dormer bungalow perched up high with lovely long coast/sea views to Rame Head and to Dartmoor across hedgerow meadows. Mostly lawned garden to back (garden furniture) and front (a lot of which gently slopes, so great for roly-poly games, but toddlers beware!) with a small fenced ornamental pond, and 11 steps up from the parking bay to the front door. Roomy hall; living room with open fire and lovely view; fitted kitchen (microwave) with tiled floor, table and chairs, door to back sun porch (washing machine, freezer) and door to back garden. Downstairs, a double bedroom with sea view; bathroom (bath, washbasin); separate loo. Stairs up to two more bedrooms – a double (sea view), and a twin. Comfortable home within a few hundred yards of coastal path. Golf, 1 1 ⁄2 miles. Duloe: little village with good food pub, PO/shop, interesting church and ‘holy well’, 3 miles from the sea at Looe, 3 miles from the lively market town of Liskeard (see brochure, page 135) and 5 from Polperro (see brochure, page 136) in beautiful wooded hilly farmland. … a mile from Duloe, along a little-used lane, a very private, detached, 18th cent. stone cottage in about 1 ⁄2 acre of garden. At the front, a gravelled area (table/chairs) and, to the side, a detached, small, sister cottage (separately occupied by single tenant); at the side and back, a large enclosed lawn/shrub garden with two ornamental ponds and meadows beyond. Inside, very comfortable with some exposed beams, homely and well thought through. Front door to hall; width-of-cottage living room with glazed doors and step down to large conservatory (slate floor; splendid cacti) with door to garden; children’s den (toys/games); farmhouse-style kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, two ovens) with Welsh dresser, table and chairs (best for 6); utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and freezer. From hall, stairs up to four bedrooms – pretty double with brass bedhead and en suite shower-room (suite); two twin; and a single with exterior door to garden; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Phone for incoming calls. Lovely, quiet, relaxing family home. Little branch line train station to Looe, 1 ⁄2 mile. Pony-trekking, coarse fishing nearby. Eden Project, 12 miles. … in Lanreath, within staggering distance of the village pub, a fine, Grade II listed south-facing cottage, mentioned in the Domesday Book, flanked by equally ancient cottages. In front, a neat walled garden; at the back, a surprisingly large, mostly lawned garden with two patios (table/chairs, barbecue) which can be lit at night for romantic dining. Inside, totally renovated and refurbished in 2005 providing an exceptionally comfortable, smart home. Snug with inglenook (woodburner, cloam oven), lovely slab slate floor, leather sofa and pool table; large living room with polished wood floor and leather sofas; fitted oak kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, freezer) with Chinese slate floor and stylish table/chairs; loo (washbasin); utility room (washing machine). Back door to cobbles and lower patio, then 11 slate steps up to lawn/second patio. From snug, stairs up to landing and four bedrooms – two doubles (5’ beds), one with en suite shower-room (suite), one twin, and one single with additional fold-away single; excellent bathroom (suite with roll-top bath plus hand-shower). . . . little haven . . . . . . victorian views SUPPLEMENT I 2006 Gorran Haven (see brochure, page 140): … a pretty, whitewashed, Grade II listed, 16th cent. semidetached cob/stone cottage in the heart of Gorran Haven, 50 yards from the beach and 100 yards from the pub, in a donkey-width brick and cobblestone lane. Originally it was an inn, reputed to be the hub of smuggler activity, with a secret tunnel for hiding contraband! Stunning coastal path walks via Chapel Point to Portmellon and Mevagissey (about 3-4 miles), or south round Dodman Point and beyond. At the back, you have use of half a large cobbled courtyard (table/chairs, barbecue). Inside, smart, modern and surprisingly spacious. Front door from lane (5’6” lintel) into width-of-cottage living room, with lovely oak floor, stone inglenook (woodburner), leather sofas, books/card games and whitepainted panel and beamed ceiling; three steps up (mind head) to fitted kitchen (washing machine, microwave, pantry with fridge-freezer) with dining table/chairs and oak floor; back door to courtyard and external door to downstairs twin bedroom and snug (2nd TV, toys) with stairs to shower-room (suite) – ideal for teenagers. Back in the living room, stairs up to a generous-sized double bedroom with 5’ bed, plus pull-out single truckle (for alternative sleeping) and en suite shower-room (suite); few more stairs up to a splendid four-poster double bedroom (6’ bed) with lovely exposed high apex ceiling beams and en suite shower-room (suite). Entrance from the back via a large paved courtyard. You have use of a big raised paved patio, reached through a small gate and up a few slate steps. Inside, smart, stylish and surprisingly roomy with entrance (5’2” lintel) into a neat fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave), with folding dining table and chairs; pretty living room with woodburner, big bay window to lane and low beamed ceiling (5’10”). Stairs from kitchen up to the double bedroom and en suite shower-room (suite). Smashing, cosy hideaway for two. It is on one of the little lanes leading to the King Harry ferry (2 miles) over the River Fal to Trelissick Gardens (Nat. Trust), Truro and Falmouth (see brochure, page 144). St Mawes (see brochure, page 142 and above), 6 miles. … a mile east of Philleigh, set back from a lane, a converted Victorian chapel and school house all by itself, with lovely long rural/creek views. In front, a scrunchy gravel parking area/garden; at the back, a path to a low fenced, lawned garden (table/chairs, barbecue) with raised fish pond (2’ depth – toddlers must be supervised) and meadows beyond. You have two-thirds of this big house (righthand side). The friendly owners live next door with separate access. Unlike many conversions, the interior has not been completely altered, there are still odd nooks and crannies and Gothic arches as reminders of its origins. From the front garden, tall original arched doors to outer hall with pew and tiled floor into inner hall with loo (washbasin); four steps down to large dining room (two tables); two steps down to big, tiled fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, two gas cookers) with slate floor, double Belfast sink and back door to garden access. From the hall, stairs up to very large living room with huge inglenook (woodburner), books, games and gorgeous long rural views. On the same floor, three bedrooms – a pretty double, a single and a twin, the latter two with washbasins; bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). More stairs to second floor and four more bedrooms – a single with washbasin and Velux window; two double, both with en suite bathrooms (suites plus hand-showers), one with Velux window; and one with two single beds, washbasin and Velux window; bathroom (suite plus handshower). No smoking. Lovely big family house.
