Cricket St Thomas: private estate (church,
renowned wildlife park, Grade II listed manor
house – Grantleigh Manor in ‘To the Manor Born’
and now an hotel – and a few cottages) within a
pretty valley below Windwhistle Hill on the A30, 2
miles east of Chard (small town). Pub and
golf/country club about 2 miles away, and all
around are fine houses and gardens (Forde Abbey,
2 miles) and glowing, golden stone villages.
Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum, about 14 miles;
visitable cider mill, 3 miles. The sea at Lyme Regis
(seaside/harbour town with sand), 15 miles.
Budleigh Salterton (see brochure, page 52):
… a detached 1950s house, like a child’s drawing of a doll’s
house, in Budleigh Salterton just 200 yards from the coast
path, 300 from the beach, and with the town centre and a good pub usefully
around the corner. Parking for one car in private lay-by in front and, at the
back, up a few steps, pretty, secluded, raised south-facing walled courtyard
(trellis/climbing plants, flowering tubs, table/chairs, barbecue, outbuilding with
washing machine, tumble drier, loo). Inside, small hall off which
comfortable double aspect living room (‘living’ gas
fire, music centre); fitted kitchen/dining room
doors to living room and courtyard. Stairs
(handrail) up to two double bedrooms (one with
TV, washbasin) and bathroom (suite plus handshower).
No smoking.
… within the 1,000 acre Cricket St Thomas Estate (yours
to roam) is an attractive, stone-built cottage, one of
three cottages and outbuildings around a gravelled courtyard.
A mile away is Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park
(discounted entry, wild animals and children’s farm), and the hotel with restaurant/evening
entertainment. You have use (nominal charge, over 21s only) of its indoor heated
swimming pool (55’ x 16’ x 3’9” to 5’8”), spa pool, sauna, steam room, beauty therapy,
sports facilities (tennis, archery, croquet, snooker, billiards, darts, bowls, cycle hire).
On three sides of the cottage are lawns, a terrace and a decked area (furniture,
barbecue) overlooking countryside; adjoining on the other is the owners’ cottage. Close
by are the owners’ equestrian centre and office. Downstairs (mostly wooden floors/rugs),
a simple pine kitchen/breakfast room (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, Belfast
sink), larder (fridge-freezer); a snug (stone-flagged floor, comfy sofas, inglenook
fireplace with open fire, CD player and piano) and light, airy
living/dining room with woodburner and French windows to
the decked area, garden, equestrian training ring and countryside; loo (washbasin). Upstairs, three
bedrooms – two double (both with TV), one (5’ bed) with en suite shower-room (suite), one smallish,
