St. Fabian
Welcoming Our Friends
From St. Colman
There is an inspiring movie I watched on St. Damien of Moloka’i. In a particular scene there was a gentleman who,
diseased with leprosy and physically blinded by it, asked to have Father Damien hear his confession. It was a powerful
interaction between St. Damien and this man who pities himself and bemoans the fact that he is helpless and in need of
constant care. St. Damien basically replies to the man that there are many in this world who, although they have sight, are
blind and do not know where they are going. He finishes the confession by telling him that he must find his way in the dark.
There are many types of darkness to experience. For this man above, he needed to find God in his sickness. For others,
the darkness may be in never hearing the name of Jesus Christ ever pass their ears. And still for others, the darkness is
simply a lukewarmness that doesn’t “feel” God anymore.
Blessed John Paul II, in Redemptoris Missio, instructs us that evangelization must take place and that there are three
distinguishable situations when looking at the world through the eyeglass of our mission. “The fact that there is a diversity of
activities in the Church’s one mission is not intrinsic to that mission, but arises from the variety of circumstances in which
that mission is carried out.” (RS, par. 33) The circumstances are going to dictate how one is going to bring the Gospel to the
listener.
The first and most proper sense of mission (ad gentes) is to missionary activity that involves people that are not aware of
Christ and the Gospel message. Here, the effort is to make Christ known and set up a community that will flourish. After the
community is established, it soon will begin to carry the torch of evangelization as well. The second situation is simply a
vibrant community who knows, loves, and preaches Christ. Here it is the duty of the Church to carry out its “pastoral care”
by keeping these communities healthy by living out the faith. Thirdly, there is the need for a “new evangelization.” These
are people, communities, and even countries that have lost faith and do not believe themselves a part of the Church anymore.
Three situations that each need a different type of evangelization. How will the “darkness” be dispelled in each situation
of initially finding, coping, and revitalizing?
Each of these situations cannot be strictly divided for of course there is going to be some overlapping. Yet, there is no
one cure-all remedy either. New and creative ways need to be tried and tested in order to meet the people where they are
at with the Lord.
Knowing that different environments exist in the “mission field” is not by any means a ground breaking discovery. It
seems so obvious at first, but on second glance, maybe it is not that clear, especially in our own local community of Detroit.
I love the idea of traveling and the discovery of exotic lands and peoples. One of my favorite shows is about a man who
travels the world to eat different types of food and experience the culture. It dawned on me, however, that I can do the same
thing he does by simply driving down a five mile radius in my own neighborhood. Each restaurant is a witness to the diversity
of such a small geographical area. And to top it off, many of these people never heard the Gospel message before.
The “mission field” has basically come to us. Strangely enough, however, is that all three mission fields are right where we
live. For in the midst of these restaurants is located our Church, the local Catholic Church, where there are the fervent faithful.
In-between these restaurants and the Catholic Church are many of the homes of those who have left the faith and need
to be called back home. Each of the different situations that Blessed John Paul II mentions is right here in our own backyard.
It is up to us to create a way in which to minister to each of these groups. Have you or I spoken of Jesus to
others lately? To whom is God calling us to bring His Gospel message? How is God calling us to bring His Gospel
message? Something we all can pray about.
Let us welcome this weekend to our parish Fr. Noel O’Meara. He is an actual live missionary. Well, come to think of it,
we all are missionaries. Let’s make him feel special anyways :) God Bless!
In Christ through Mary,
Fr. Craig

Reflections
It's absolutely amazing how 7 days
can change someone's life so
much. This was my first year going
to REACH and let me just say, it
was not what I expected. It was
better. I was not only moved by my
amazing neighbors, Zeta and Fred
and their 2 daughters, Heather and
Britney, but by every single person
at the school. Everything was incredible,
the people were amazing.
I thought meeting new people
would be difficult, but the happy
atmosphere made it so incredibly
easy. I made friends from Pennsylvania,
Arizona, Michigan, and New
York all of whom I WILL keep in
touch with. My crew was absolutely
amazing. I had no idea it was possible
to grow so close to 15 people
within a matter of days. My crew
was like my family, I could be myself
with them. REACH has been
one of the best weeks of my entire
life and I cannot wait for next year.
R.C.I.A.
Have you been considering becoming Catholic? Have you been wondering what the
Church teaches and why? Have you felt the Holy Spirit nudging you to learn more?
Were you baptized Catholic, but have been away from the church for some time and
would like to come back? If so, we invite you to join our R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian
Initiation for Adults) group! We meet Sunday mornings, from 9:00am until 10:55am,
beginning Sunday, September 22 nd and go through Easter. All materials are provided,
and there is no cost to you, other than your time and enthusiasm. Our gatherings are informal
and include prayer, discussion, Scripture, as well as other learning mediums. Our hope is to answer any
questions you may have as honestly and as completely as we can. There is no obligation, so, if at any
time you decide that this is not where God is calling you to be, you are free to leave with our blessings. If
you decide you do want to become Catholic, we will prepare you to be brought into the Church at the
Easter Vigil in April. If you have been baptized in another Christian faith, we will need a copy of your baptismal
certificate. Registration is necessary and you can do that by calling Celia St. Charles at 248-553-
4610, or by emailing her at: cstcharles@stfabian.org. We look forward to meeting you and accompanying
you on this part of your faith journey!
BAPTISM PREPARATION :
If you are a new parent and this is your first child to be baptized at St. Fabian, you are invited to
participate in the on-line baptism preparation class by e-mailing Celia St. Charles at:
cstcharles@stfabian.org. I will send you a set of questions that you will be asked to answer and return
to me, along with a baptismal information sheet. After returning these documents , you will then
be invited to watch a DVD on baptisms at St. Fabian. This DVD is shown the 3 rd Thursday of each
month at 7pm in the church. After watching the DVD you may then call the parish office to schedule your child’s
baptism. Our next date for watching the DVD is: Thursday, August 8th
If you have already had other children baptized at St. Fabian, you do not need to do the prep class. Simply fill
out the “Baptism Info” form that can be found on the web site under Baptism Prep and e-mail it to:
(Acting on Catholic Social Teaching)
Are you looking for something to do this summer to help the disadvantaged? If so, please consider
joining one of our groups that helps serve dinner to the needy in Detroit.
Every month we make 2 trips to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen on the east side of Detroit. Our Friday
trip involves serving lunch and our Thursday trip, dinner. Sometimes we serve as few as 300 people,
but often, many more hungry people are fed by our volunteers.
The next summer Friday date is August 9. This group of 4 or 5 people meets in the St. Fabian parking lot at 10 AM,
carpools to the Kitchen, serves lunch from 11 until 1 PM, and returns by 1:45.
The remaining Thursday dinner date for the summer is August 22. This group of 6 to 8 people will meet in the
church parking lot at 3 PM, carpool to the Kitchen, serve dinner from 4 until 6, and return by 6:45.
One Saturday a month we also send a group of about 5 people to serve dinner at COTS, a shelter in downtown
Detroit. For this trip the group meets in the St. Fabian parking lot at 4:45, carpools to COTS, serves dinner from 6 to 7
PM, and returns by 7:30. We bring along desserts to serve to the residents, as well as bread donations from Panera,
which are kindly obtained for us by a parishioner.
Sign-up sheets for these outings will be posted near the gym this summer, where Mass will be held. Reminder phone
calls will be made a few days before the outings. For further information, please contact Cindy Matuszak at :
Vatican II
Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI called for a “Year of Faith,” which celebrated the 50 th Anniversary of the opening of Vatican
II. As a way to close out this Year of Faith, which ends in November, we are excited to have Fr. Vic Clore, who was
actually in the seminary in Rome during Vatican II. He will give us a 6 week overview of how the Vatican II documents
deal with such topics as: Are non-Catholics able to be saved, what role do the laity have in the Church, what is
informed conscience, etc. Everyone is invited to join us in the social hall on Wednesday evenings, Oct. 9 through
Nov. 20 (off Nov. 6) from 7-9pm. See below to register.
All of these events require pre-registration. You can do this by calling Celia St. Charles
Just back from Newfane, New York and everyone though tired, is still exhilarated from the experience. The week began
with the 5:00 PM Mass on July 20th. You could feel the energy and excitement as 53 teens and 10 adult chaperones were
about to begin a week they would not soon forget. The Lord had called them and they responded, “Yes, Lord, I will go.”
We left Sunday morning at 6:00 AM taking with us the 60 quilts made by loving hands from our community; eight hours
later we were in Newfane! In the evening we found out what crews we were working with. There were 35 sites in Newfane
and Lockport that desperately needed attention. A total of 500 teens and adults were here to make a difference.
Robbie Love, Danny McNeece and I were working at the same site. Our Neighbor (the home owner), Ann, was nervous
at first. I would be too. Imagine letting 14 strangers come to your house and paint, repair, clean up with most of them being
teens! This takes trust. By day’s end, our crews were starting to get to know one another. By week’s end we were family.
Ann always came out to pray with us as we began our day, at lunch and as we closed our work day. Life had not been
easy for her. When she purchased this house with her husband many years ago, they had so many plans and dreams.
Two years later, her husband died. She was heartbroken and having no extra money to do the things they had planned to
do with their home, it sat as time took its toll on both the house and Ann.
Everyday we came back and transformed the outside of her home and garage. This in turn, began a transformation
within her. Her clothes showed outwardly the transformation taking place within. Day one was a black shirt, day two brown,
by week’s end she was in a fuchsia pink top with a smile and tears that would not stop, continually thanking us and God for
not only the house being painted but the healing that was taking place inside.
Our young people went to make a difference and certainly accomplished this goal. Their own hearts were transformed
too in the process as Jesus showed the depths of His love not just to our neighbors but to them as they responded “YES” to
Him. Always present, always loving, our Lord loves us more than we know.
On a personal note, I would like to say thank you to our adult team; Becky Bur, Ann Compton, Sue Crudgington, Lisa
Fargo, John Goshorn, Joe Juliano, Mike McNeece, Ken Sobolak and Anne Sweet. Without them we would not have been
able to go. With them, our teens changed the heart of a community. Thank you for giving of your time, your talent and being
patient with me and our teens. I will always be thankful for you and grateful for our friendship.
Over the next few weeks, watch for more stories, reflections, and pictures in the bulletin and in the hallway. Read the
Good News our God has done through you. We thank you and pray for you as you have continuously supported the work of
our teens. Without you this would not be possible. May God bless you all for what you have done and in the many ways
you made this Mission Trip possible. Next year, Monroe, North Carolina here we come!
