ARHS Best Buddies. had a tremendously successful semi-formal Friendship
Ball on March 1st. This is an annual event. DJ Matt Palmer (2014) had everyone
out on the dance floor to the latest beats and fan favorites like CottonEyed
Joe and the Macerena. Many of the food platters were donated by Roche
Brother's Supermarket of Westborough. About 50 members of Best Buddies
from ARHS and Marlborough High School thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
R-Word Campaign 2013. ARHS Best Buddies will be launching their R-Word
Awareness Campaign later in March to align with the international celebration
which fell on March 6th. There will be window paintings in the cafeteria, sale
of bracelets saying "ARHS- End the R-Word" "I See You!!", and pledge signing
inviting students to avoid the use of the word retard or retarded as it is a
derogatory word describe our classmates and friends with many abilities. Anyone
interested in supporting ARHS Best Buddies chapter can contact science
teacher Kevin Hausmann to purchase a bracelet for $2.
Post Prom
Your small donation will have a
big impact
Parents of our Class of 2014 received
a special letter last week. This
letter is our annual request for monetary
donations to support the Junior
Post Prom Party. This is our 19th
year offering this event to our ARHS
students and their guests. After the
prom ends at Union Station on May
18th all students are invited to attend
the party at the New England Sports
Center from midnight till 5am at no
additional cost to them. This event is
designed to discourage drinking &
driving by providing a safe, fun alternative
to other parties. APTO
helps coordinate this evening of entertainment,
music, food and other
activities (such as a hypnotist, ice
skating & mechanical bull-riding!!)
for over 370 students this year!
Needless to say the financial cost is
large, up to $14,000. We have always
asked local businesses and the
parents of juniors to donate to this
worthwhile event. This year, we are
asking all of our ARHS community
members to donate. If 100 families
each donated $10 (that would be
$1000!!) it would help tremendously
to defer the cost associated with this
party. Many of you may have a nonjunior
student attending as a guest,
we would welcome your donation as
well. If you are willing to donate,
please send along your check to Sue
Distler @ 71 Chesterfield Road,
Northborough, 01532. If you know
of a business that would donate as
well, you may contact Sue at
Sue.Distler@gmail.com with the information.
We appreciate your support
to keep our teens safe on this
special night.
(More information will be available
to students attending the Junior Post
Prom over the next few weeks.)
DECA. 87 students participated in DECA State 2013 held on March
14-16 at the Marriott Copley Hotel Conference Center in Boston. Nathan
Ding (Business Financial Services) and the team of Lauren
Travers and Maggie Kiley (Marketing Communications) won first
place trophies. Peter Scorzelli, Tyler Fagan, James Officer, Erin Healey
& Anna Wendt, Brooks Gingrich, Paul Nardone, and the lip dubbing
video trio of Sam Huddart, Nick Zanghi, and Giles Ober all won
third place trophies. Michelle Tontodonato is the department chair.
Robotics. Algonquin Team 1100 moves on from their terrific showing
at WPI in Worcester to Boston University’s Agannis Arena for the
FIRST Robotics Competition on March 21-23. The team has already
qualified for the international competition in St. Louis later this spring.
George Clarke is the ARHS connection to Team 1100. The team is
supported by several corporate sponsors.
French Ambassadors. For two weeks in March Algonquin was the
base camp for a group of 28 French High School (lycee) students from
St. Etienne, France. The students stayed with host families, attended
classes, and went on excursions. We are considering adopting the
school in France as a sister school, with back-and-forth visits in the future.
Lauren Osepchuk, French Teacher at Algonquin, organized the
visit.
Dramahawks. Algonquin’s entry to the Massachusetts High School
Drama Festival was God of Carnage, a play about two couples who
meet to resolve a dispute between their elementary children, with
mixed results. All four actors – Cassidy Tatten, Nicky Fox, Josh
Telepman, and Brennan Burns won acting awards as an ensemble, and
Katy Pyne won an award for stage management. Maura Morrison
teaches drama at Algonquin, and directed this play.
Family Farmers Needed for
Summer Coverage of the ARHS
School Garden
Do you enjoy gardening and helping
to grow food that will be used by AR-
HS Culinary classes as well as the
Northborough Food Pantry? If so, the
ARHS Environmental Club is beginning
to make a plan for the school
garden to be cared for during the summer.
We are looking for families or students
to volunteer to oversee the garden
for one week during the summer.
Responsibilities would be to pick
what is ready to be harvested and do a
small amount of weeding. The
amount of time expected for the week
would be no more than 2 hours total.
Because the garden is located in an
interior courtyard, the weeding must
be done when the school is open during
the week from 8AM to 4PM.
If you are interested and can help
please email
Teacher Appreciation Breakfast
APTO is preparing for the annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday, May 9th. We are looking for a parent
volunteer to help coordinate donations for this breakfast. We will also need you to assist us that morning with the set
up in the teacher's lounge at 6:30am. (Yes, it is early!!) We generally serve a continental breakfast with a variety of
homemade and store bought foods. Once we have a Coordinator, Principal Mead will send a reminder One-Call with
your contact information to all parents to ask for food donations and let you know 'drop-off' homes/locations in Northborough
and Southborough. If you are able to assist us, please contact Eileen Cozzolino at cozfamily@gmail.com.
ARHS Scholarships Information
We would like to remind parents that all senior students are welcome to apply for both the APTO Scholarships and the
Athletic Boosters Scholarships. In order for the student's scholarship application to be accepted, parents must be current
members of the respective group. The CRC has all the additional information needed to apply as well the applications
for students. Both groups are still accepting membership dues at this time. This newsletter has membership
applications (for parents) for both groups.
We All Scream for
The Ice Cream Social
order for this event to run smoothly, we need
parent volunteers to scoop and serve the ice
cream. If you are available that day please
contact Suzy Green at Green625@verizon.net
with your availability. Thank you for coordinating
A NOTE FROM YOUR APTO
Denial must be setting in for parents this month....this school year cannot pass so
quickly!! The third term ends this week and then we are in the home stretch for the
last marking period of the year!!
Each year at this time, groups at ARHS sponsor programs for both students and parents
about the dangers of alcohol and drug usage. Prom season seems to be the proverbial
time to revisit the dangers of bad decisions. Many of these issues were
discussed last week at the SADD presentation, Drive to Save Lives. The juniors and
seniors heard the presentations of Chris Sullivan and Kathy Meyer during the school
day. Other students and all parents were invited to return that evening to listen to the
speakers. Detective Sargent Brian Griffin also gave an 'eye opening' discussion about
drug use in our towns. As parents and as a sponsor, we had hoped to have better attendance
at the evening program. There was something truly heart-felt about their
presentations that left an impression on our students as well as with us. Please take
the time to ask your juniors and seniors about their thoughts about the program. For
those parents with younger students, please take the time to have the discussions of
drinking and driving. Hopefully our Prom season can be one of great memories and
not one scared with bad decisions.
On a lighter note, we hope you have noticed the dates for the Ice Cream Social and
the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. Also, our Junior Post Prom Committee is still
looking for volunteers to work the night (shifts between 12am-5am) of the Prom at
the New England Sport Center. This is your chance to volunteer and help the APTO
with some fun events!
All parents are welcome to join us and Principal Mead at our April meeting on Thursday,
April 11th. Hope to see you then!
SAVE THE DATE
This year the spring production will be Thornton Wilder’s
Our Town. This year also marks the 75 th Anniversary of the
original Broadway production of this great American play.
Save the date and prepare for the
theatrical event of the season -
April 30 th – May 4 th
Keep on the lookout for exciting
events and surprises as we
celebrate 75 years of Our Town as
well as “your town” of
Northborough or Southborough.
Described as "...the greatest American play ever written," the
story follows the small town of Grover's Corners through three
acts. Narrated by a stage manager and performed with
minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs
families as their children fall in love and marry and face the
challenges of life.
Join us for this intimate and innovative spring production
that continues our quest for theater that matters.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Swim and Diving Team News
Marilia Passos, our exchange student from Brazil, was a wonderful addition to the swim team this winter. Mar was a
major contributor to the team who had tremendous spirit, energy and talent. She qualified for and swam in the Division
1 State Championship meet in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke and has been selected as a Mid
Wach All Star. The team will certainly miss her next year!
Drew Beland, is the other swimmer who deserves to be highlighted. Not only did he come in 3rd in the 200 IM and
3rd in the 500 freestyle at the Div. 1 State Tournament as a sophomore, but he broke 5 new school records this winter,
3 of which he set at the State Championships...50 free, 100 free, 500 free, 100 back, 200 IM. (The 100 free, 500 free
and 200 IM were at States.) Drew now holds 6 individual school records (out of 7 individual swimming events) and is
part of 2 relays that broke school records last year. He did not lose a single individual race this season until his two 3rd
places at States. Drew has been selected as a Midland-Wachusett League All-Star and League MVP. Drew has also
been selected by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette as a T&G Super Team All Star and by the Metro West Daily
News as one of their Super Team All Stars!
Our regular season record is 14-0. We were the MidWach League Invitational Swimming & Diving Meet champions
and the undefeated MidWach League champions. Last year, we were 16-0. So, much of our success can be credited to
Drew Beland, not only because he wins a lot of races, but also because of his extraordinary work ethic at practice,
which influences the rest of the team to dig in and swim faster. One person cannot win a meet. It takes an entire team.
But, Drew definitely has impacted this team in a major way.
In addition to Drew Beland and Marilia Passos, the following swimmers have been named Mid Wach All Stars: Co-
Captain Carl Lindgren, Co-Captain Eleni Bautz, Sarah Beland, Claudia Capria, Mackenzie Hostage, Carly Railing.
Jean Fedak, Coach
The Algonquin Health Office
Welcome to SPRING! As we prepare to say farewell to our SENIOR students a reminder: when your senior student
has met their senior obligations, they will be handed their cumulative health folder. This chart contains hard copies of
physicals, notes, etc. that have been sent in over the years. Going forth, one of the most important documents in the
chart is your child’s immunization record. We strongly advise that you keep this document in a safe place for future
reference.
As the weather improves, many of us find it difficult to remain indoors. Many of our senior students have reached
their 18 th birthday and have the right to dismiss themselves for reasons of illness, etc. This is a good time to discuss
with your 18 year old that while it is a right to consent to their own dismissal, it is also a responsibility.
We are nearing the completion of our screening program for the 12/13 school year. Postural Screening for our freshman
students is all but complete. We are chasing down the few students that were absent when their gym class was
screened. Vision & Hearing screening for sophomores is about 90% complete. If you do not receive a letter from us, it
means your child passed the screening or that we have documentation on file indicating that your child is under care.
BMI results for sophomore students enrolled in Physical Education class this semester will be mailed home before
April vacation. Heights & weights are measured in PE class and submitted to the Health Office. We then input the
results, calculate the BMI, and mail the letters home as mandated by the State of MA.
As the weather improves we expect to see students who cope with seasonal allergies. Please remember, no student is
permitted to carry ANY medication, including over the counter meds, on their person. Please see page 34 of the Student
Handbook for specific regulations regarding medication administration in school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us … scaron@nsboro.k12.ma.us jfishman@nsboro.k12.ma.us
Be well and enjoy the lovely weather!
Dear Parents:
You are hopefully well aware that the Algonquin team of administrators, educators and staff
have been working for the past three years to collect data and complete a self-study in preparation
for our NEASC accreditation visit. The New England Association of Secondary Schools provides
peer-review and accreditation services for 2000 schools in the six New England states. We are
eager to show off our strengths and obtain constructive feedback from expert teachers and
administrators who are visiting Algonquin May 5-8, 2013.
While many parents volunteered their time by completing surveys or serving on the
committees who wrote our self-study report, we further need your support by sharing your
expertise as to where we excel and where we can refocus our efforts. We are inviting all members of
the Northborough and Southborough communities and all Algonquin families to participate in the
NEASC visit May 5 – 6, 2013.
Newsletter of the Northboro Southboro Music Association
John Arnold is one of the most actively involved music students at Algonquin. As an instrumentalist, he plays first
alto in the Wind Ensemble, lead alto in Jazz 1 and clarinet with the full orchestra. He also sings with the A-Gents
and frequently plays the piano as an accompanist for the Camerata Singers. John is an active member of Tri-M
and has appeared in three musicals at Algonquin. His overall musicianship and dedication to excellence in
performance is exemplary.
Emma Becker is Algonquin's resident low brass expert. She plays the tuba in the Wind Ensemble and full
orchestra and the bass trombone in Jazz 1. Emma has also performed on trombone in the pit orchestra for
muscial theater productions. This past summer, Emma participated in the summer Youth Music School at the
University of New Hampshire playing tuba and trombone. Her hobbies include finding creative uses for duct tape
(instument case repair) and naming all the school-owned low brass instruments.
>
The Algonquin music faculty selects students based on
character, commitment, support of their fellow musicians
and their contributions to the music community. We are
very fortunate to have so many students to highlight and
look forward to selecting more students in the coming
months.
A Message From the AD
Fran Whitten, III, Athletic Director
Algonquin Athletics on Twitter
@arhsathletics
Find out up to the date scores and
learn of important events.
I can feel the excitement in the air! We just need the snow to melt and the fields
to dry so that the fun can begin. The spring season is upon us and my coaches and
student/athletes are ready to go. For updated schedules please go to
www.mwlma.org. You can also follow
the athletic department on twitter @arhsathletics.
The spring season is probably our busiest
time of year. Seniors are receiving
their college acceptance letters, juniors
are preparing to take on the role of
school leaders, sophomores are transitioning
into being upper classmen, and
the freshmen are chalking up a year of
experience as a high school student.
This is also the time of year for concerts, proms, and a wide array
of other events and activities highlighted by graduation.
For our student/athletes this can be an opportunity to learn and develop their time management skills. Trying
to balance their commitment to athletics with other school related activities as well as an active social calendar
can be a challenge. Academics must remain the priority as they navigate through the spring season.
I would like to take this opportunity to provide some reminders regarding
important rules that frequently come up at this time of year. The bona fide
team member rule, chemical health regulations, attendance requirements, and
transportation guidelines can
all be found online in the
Guide to Athletics. Briefly,
the bona fide team member
rule states that a
student/athlete must be loyal
to their high school team. An
athlete may not miss a high
school team or practice in
order to attend another event
related to a private club team.
The chemical health regulations
apply to the consumption
or possession of
substances such as alcohol,
tobacco, or marijuana. Attendance requirements determine a
student/athlete’s eligibility to participate based upon their
presence in school. Transportation guidelines require student/athletes to travel to and from contests on the
team bus.
Having completed both an outstanding fall and winter season, the spring promises to be equally successful.
Come on out to the games and show your T-Hawk Pride!
APTO
Algonquin Parent Teacher Organization
Our Mission.
< To provide support and
assistance to the parents,
teachers, students and
administration of
Algonquin Regional High
School.
< To promote
communication among and
between parents, faculty,
administration and
students to strengthen the
education process and
increase community spirit.
Be a Part of Our Community. IT’S EASY.
When your child’s in high school, it’s critical that you be aware of what’s going on at school.
Getting that information from your child is almost impossible! APTO is a great way to create
that home/school connection. While your involvement may not be in the classroom, or
chaperoning a field trip, we still need you to keep the ARHS community informed, strong and
safe, and provide parental support.
The high school years will shape your child’s future, so please make a difference and get
involved! It takes parents to keep APTO going! We’re always looking for new ideas,
suggestions and new faces. Make one meeting, come every month or simply support the
APTO financially. However you choose to become involved you’re always welcome!
As member of the APTO you’ll get the monthly APTO newsletter sent directly to your
personal email to keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in the school. You’ll also be the
first to know about any events/programs we’re sponsoring or organizing and receive monthly
APTO meeting reminders. Plus, your child will be eligible to apply for an APTO scholarship as
a graduating senior.
What Do We Do. IT’S IMPORTANT.
< Support ARHS programs such as DECA, SAAD, and assist teacher lead initiatives.
< Organize/sponsor guest speakers on various topics for the ARHS community.
< Produce and distribute the monthly APTO newsletter. The Newsletter, contains
important information from the ARHS faculty and administration as well as from many
Algonquin organizations, clubs, class representatives and sports/coaches.
< Support Junior Post-Prom Party: a safe, chaperoned, substance-free, all-night postprom
event for ARHS Juniors, regardless of prom attendance.
< Coordinate hospitality programs for both students and teachers, including the
teacher/staff appreciation breakfast and luncheon.
< Coordinate parent & student volunteers to support ARHS and APTO sponsored events.
