NEW DISMISSAL and AFTER
SCHOOL PICK-UP
PROCEDURES
Starting Monday, November 20, 2006, a new dismissal
and after school pick-up plan will take effect. All
students that ride a bus in the afternoon will now be
dismissed verbally over the intercom at 1:58 p.m. Only
bus riders will be released at this time. When released,
all bus riders should quickly exit to the bus lot and go
to their assigned buses. The buses will start to depart
when security gives the signal at approximately 2:03
p.m. Only bus riders will be allowed to enter the bus
pick-up area after school during our dismissal time.
All students who walk, drive or get picked up in the
afternoon will now remain in class until they are
dismissed by the bell at 2:03 p.m. Students who are
dismissed at 2:03 will no longer be allowed to exit
through either the A or B Tower near the bus lot area.
In addition, students who are picked-up after school
will now meet their rides in the new Pick-up Zone Area
near the front of the student parking lot. Staff will help
to assist students and parents with this new process of
exiting the building in a safe and orderly manner.
Security will direct traffic flow each day, and staff
members will help students to locate this new pick-up
zone. This new process will help with our daily traffic
congestion in the front of the building and will allow
students to meet their rides in a safe and orderly
manner.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
VISITORS

Visitors to the building are reminded that they MUST
check in, with a photo id, at the front desk when
entering the building. This is very important to the
safety and security of our students and staff.
ESOL Department News
The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
Program at Hylton High School is comprised of students
coming from thirty-two countries speaking twenty
different languages. We’ve started the school year off by
participating in several terrific activities.
On Saturday, September 30, we held our Back-to-School
Family Breakfast. It was wonderful to meet the parents
and families of so many of our students to talk about the
ESOL program. Ms. Custard joined us in welcoming new
and returning students to Hylton High School.
ESOL seniors traveled to George Mason University on
October 13 to attend the Alcanza College Fair. Over one
hundred colleges and universities were in attendance to
provide information and answer questions. Ms. Angela
Jenkins facilitated this hugely successful field trip.
A representative from Northern Virginia Community
College gave a special presentation to ESOL students on
October 18. We discussed the application process, degree
and program choices, and financial aid.
The ESOL Club participated in Homecoming activities by
operating a refreshments booth during Hylton’s Bonfire
Night. Members of the club were busy selling delicious
tamales, pupusas, and horchata.
PEP has begun! The Parents as Educational Partners
(PEP) adult education class began in October for parents
of ESOL students. The class meets each Tuesday at
Christa McCauliffe Elementary School, and is lead by Mr.
James Willoughby.
ESOL students participated in a fund-raiser activity this
fall selling entertainment books. The funds raised will be
used towards a college scholarship.

Library News
The beginning of the school year started with all 9 th graders
receiving their library orientation. The students learned the
library is open Monday – Thursday from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
and on Friday from 7:00 am – 2:15 pm. There are variety
of services available to all students. We have 20 computers
that are located throughout the main library which the
students can utilize for any school related activity and 30
new computers in our labs. This includes homework,
research, typing papers, checking Edulink, accessing
GroupFusion, printing, even copy machine services.
Students, of course, are allowed to check out two books at
a time and are encouraged to read any one of the ten
Virginia Readers’ Choice Books listed below. They can
receive extra credits in their Language Arts classes after
reading a Virginia Readers’ Choice book and taking a short
quiz in the library on the book. Books are available in the
Hylton library.
11 th grade Language Arts classes have successfully been
through their mandatory 11 th grade research paper
orientation presented by our librarians. Students learned
how to research safe and accurate online sites from seven
online databases. Hylton’s web page has a library link to
access these sites and a template to initiate the research
paper. On October 23, 2006, Hylton held the parent
informational meeting discussing the importance of the
research paper and helpful hints to assist your student in
completing a successful paper.
Security News
Hylton’s Security Staff tries to anticipate and effectively
respond to unsafe situations. With this point in mind,
we would like to direct your attention to the school
parking lot and student drivers. Please go over the safe
rules of driving with your children. The maximum safe
speed on campus is 10 mph; driver and occupants must
wear seatbelts and keep the music down so as to
maintain an awareness of their surroundings. Strive to
be a perceptive courteous driver at all times.
To discourage and correct behavior security and staff
will warn drivers, notify parents, take away the school
permit (not allow vehicle on campus) and if necessary
refer violations to our SRO (school resource police
officer). Maintaining safe driving habits on school
campus also encourages safe operating habits on all
public roads.
LOST AND FOUND: A Wolfgang Puck’s Café
Collection glass top cooking pan was left at the school
after a faculty breakfast at the beginning of the school
year. Please come and claim it!
PTSO NEWS
Thanks for all the support we have received so far this
year. We are proud to say membership is almost 300
strong. While this is good, there is still room for those
of you who have not yet joined.
The Homecoming parade picnic was a great success!
We were so happy to be able to provide a nice postparade
meal to our participants. We also lent a helping
hand at the Homecoming Dance with refreshments and
chaperones.
We are excited about the upcoming months and have
many exciting things in the works. We invite everyone
to our monthly meetings which are on the 2 nd Monday
of each month. Our next meeting is scheduled for
December 11. I look forward to working with you all!
Thanks again,
GERMAN RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE
The Foreign Language Department would like to welcome five German Exchange students and their chaperone Mrs.
Martha Felix. This exchange is unique in that the students stay for six weeks, attend school on a regular basis, participate
in extra curricular activities and try to see as much of the area as possible. This is a real immersion program and an
excellent educational opportunity for our students. The five students Lisanne Kärtner, Franziska Maier, Katharina
Mergenthaler, Sebastian Schlesinger and Anna Selmair are staying with their partners Lisa Centeno, Anna Schroeder,
Erika Franz, Connor Power and Cate Sullivan respectively. In June and July our Hylton students will be going to the
homes and school of their German partners to be immersed in the German culture. This is a real commitment on the
part of our students since the German school is in session till the end of July and our students are extending their school
year by six weeks.

Protecting Your Family from the
Flu
So far this school year Hylton students and staff have not
experienced any signs of influenza. Because other areas of
the country have not been so fortunate the Center for
Disease Control ( CDC ) has put out an extensive amount of
information on prevention and treatment of the flu.
The flu virus is spread from person to person by air borne
droplets from the mouth or nose of a person with influenza.
Touching objects which a sick person has touched or
sharing personal items with them may also transmit the
virus. Flu symptoms include fever, headache, extreme
tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and
muscle aches. Cold symptoms are similar but do not include
a high fever or extreme tiredness or muscle aches. Serious
consequences of the flu include dehydration, pneumonia
and bacterial infections. Across the US every year more than
115,000 people are hospitalized with the flu and over 36,000
people die of this illness.
Because influenza spreads so quickly it is important for
students who are ill with a fever or flu symptoms to stay at
home until the fever is gone. As far as prevention, parents
should encourage their healthy children to get adequate
amounts of sleep, to eat a nutritious diet, to stay away from
friends who are ill and above all to wash their hands
frequently. For further information go to www.cdc.gov/flu
TESTING
Several standardized tests have been completed this fall. The SAT was given to 300 students on October 7. The PSAT
was given to 970 sophomores and juniors on October 18. The Fall SOL testing has begun and will culminate the first
two weeks in January. The Fall SOL testing population consists of new students who have transferred into Prince
William County Schools as well as those students who have passed a course but have not passed the SOL test in that
course. The ASVAB, a military career inventory test, has also been administered. First Semester exams will be
the week of January 22- 26.
APPOINTMENTS
The Guidance Staff continues to try to accommodate all parents and students. This is best accomplished by setting up
appointments with counselors. Students are asked to come before and after school or during lunch to schedule
these appointments. Parent conferences can be scheduled by calling 580-4067.
CLASS CONFERENCES
Senior conferences were held during the months of September and October. At these conferences, seniors were given
a booklet containing graduation requirements as well as information concerning the college application process, resume
writing, job opportunities, military opportunities, scholarships, and much more. Seniors also were asked to confirm the
correct spelling of their name for diploma orders. College applications are due in guidance by December 11 for
those students who desire their applications to be processed and mailed before winter break (December 22).
Counselors have met with all freshmen through their Physical Education classes. Sophomores will be seen during
the month of November. At these meetings, counselors discuss school policies, graduation requirements, study skills,
SOL requirements, and post-secondary plans as well as distributing a class handbook to each student.
Juniors will be meeting with their counselors in the weeks preceding the winter break. PSAT results should be available
at the conferences. A booklet containing important information will be distributed to each Junior during these
meetings.
GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL
Interested sophomores and juniors are in the process of applying to the very competitive Virginia Governor’s School, a
month long intensive study during the summer of 2007 at a college in Virginia. Academic excellence and exceptional
talent in the visual and performing arts are some of the stipulations for those students who are chosen to participate in
this prestigious competition.
