------------------------------ Message fromthe Principal ------------------------------Dear <strong>Parent</strong>s,Each day continues to be an exciting and productive day of learning and adventure at C. D. <strong>Hylton</strong> Senior <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>! I would liketo thank my committed staff, outstanding students, supportive parents, business partners, and community for their collaborative effortsin ensuring that our school is committed to excellence in all areas. It is evident that we all work hard daily to support our school’stheme, “We are Family – Working Together for Total Success.” This also holds true for our school’s focus, “Challenged toExcellence—Raising the Standards.” I am elated to congratulate our entire <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> community for achieving the 2011Virginia Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award. Our school earned this award for having met all state and federalbenchmarks for at least two consecutive years and because we are continuing to make progress toward the goals of GovernorMcDonnell and the Virginia Board of Education. We are waiting to receive our award banner so that it can be proudlydisplayed in themain hallway. This is huge accomplishment and another example of the hard work and commitment of our staff, students, andparents. I commend all our students who strive to adhere to our school’s high expectations for academic achievement, attendance, andappropriate behavior.Our <strong>Hylton</strong> family and the Woodbridge community were delighted to support the News and Messenger’s HoopsFest 16. This year’sHoopsFest 16 benefited Corporal Josh Himan, a 2002 <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> graduate, who was seriously injured in Afghanistan.Currently, over $12,000.00 was collected toward the housing remodeling project for Josh and his family. Individuals wishing to makecontributions should contact our Activities Director, Mr. Sal Colangelo, or the News and Messenger. We’d also like to invite our<strong>Hylton</strong> family to the 4 th Annual Kyle Wilson Walk for Fitness which will be held here at <strong>Hylton</strong> on Saturday, April 16, 2011. This is inmemory of Tech I Kyle Wilson, Prince William Fire and Rescue, a 2000 <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> graduate, who died in the line of duty onApril 16, 2007.It’s hard to believe that this school year is almost over. This time of the year means several things to all of us. When we return fromSpring Break, underclassmen will have 39 school days left. Their last day of school is June 17. For seniors, Class of 2011, there will be33 school days left. We are all excited about celebrating graduation exercises on June 11. Center for International Studies and Languages (CISL)An integrated curriculum of learningForeign Exchange and TravelOur French sister school Lycée Carnot, came to Woodbridge with 39 students in the first weeks of March. Because of thenumber of French students, <strong>Hylton</strong> invited Forest Park <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> to partner in this successful exchange program. Six <strong>Hylton</strong>students and two Forest Park students will be traveling to Dijon to stay with the students they hosted. It is a true reciprocalexchange! Bonvoyage! Special thanks to the chaperones and organizers of this travel opportunity: Mrs. Meg Holt and Mr. AndrewStanleyIn December we said Aufwiedersehen to eight German exchange students from our sister school in Dorfen. They all had anamazing experience and were sad to leave after six weeks enrolled in classes at <strong>Hylton</strong>. German teacher, Frau Amy Anderton,will be accompanying the Prince William County group of students going to Dorfen this summer. And in February, for the firsttime at <strong>Hylton</strong>, we hosted a group of 13 students from different areas of China. This hosting experience was organized, in part,through Forte International, based in Manassas, Virginia.The CISL program thanks all the host families for all of our exchange programs. Without your generosity and welcoming spiritwe would be unable to offer these life-changing experiences to students both at home and overseas. We hope that the familieswill continue to build their new international friendships. Certainly the tears on the departure days showed the strongimpressions these experiences made on everyone, parents and students alike.CISL Conference: Connecting with the World - Special Focus: Celebrating 50 years of the Peace CorpsThe major March event for CISL students, families, and the community was CISL’s own annual conference on Saturday, March5. We welcomed over 250 participants, parents, students, and members of the community, for a day filled with internationalawareness for everyone. Our keynote speaker was Stephen Redmon who is Special Assistant to the General Counsel,Department of Veteran Affairs and Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland, Homeland Security and EmergencyManagement. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone. We also welcomed other former Peace Corps volunteerswho presented their individual experiences: Marlena Hawkins (Moldova), Sara Holtz (Togo), Benjamin Houle (Russia Far East),Deja Love (Swaziland), Laara Manler (Burkina Faso and Paraguay), and Raymond Myers (India). The Peace Corps speakerswere organized by <strong>Hylton</strong>’s social studies teacher, Jason Fox, himself a former Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia. This is very important to the safety andsecurityof our students and staff.Key Club CollectionsPrince William County <strong>School</strong>s will again hold an April FoodDrive to benefit ACTS and SERVE. These two organizationsprovide food to hundreds of needy families in the countythroughout the year. Pantry supplies run low this time of theyear but the need continues. The Key Club asks for your help bydonating non-perishable food items for the pantry. Most neededitems are cereal, peanut butter, jelly, canned meats, pasta,spaghetti sauce, and macaroni and cheese. It is our goal tocollect 1,000 pounds of food from <strong>Hylton</strong>. We are a generousand giving familycalled to the challenge! If everyperson broughtin one item it would be an easy goal to meet. So, from April 1through 25 PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE bring or send in yourdonations. Collection boxes will be placed throughout thebuilding!Also, the Key Club will be collecting used DVDs for the DaVita Dialysis Center. As part of our community outreach theClub has adopted the dialysis center. We are making springdecorations to brighten the walls and are also acceptingdonations of DVDs to be used for their viewing library. Theywill also be used as bingo game gifts for the patients. As you canimagine, dialysis dependency can be a life altering experience andanything we can do to help is sincerely appreciated by the Centeras well as the patients.STUDENT DROP OFF INFORMATIONNote 3 Drop Off Areas#1 Front of Building at Flags – it is NOT necessary to wait untilyou get to the flag area to drop off your student. Gifted Education ServicesC. D. <strong>Hylton</strong>’s gifted services include a seminar program,advanced course offerings and individual conferences thatfocus on the individual needs of the student.The seminar program is a county-wide program inwhich small groups of 8-12 students meet, in a studentcenteredenvironment, to think about and discuss avariety of concepts centered around an interdisciplinarycurriculum. Each grade level focuses on a specifictheme and includes work in the various disciplinesincluding art, architecture, music, mathematics,science, history and language. The program providesenrichment and extension to the classroom instruction.Interested in being identified for Gifted Education services?Students may be referred for Gifted Education servicesby administrators, school counselors, teachers, parents,peers, and community members. Students may alsorefer themselves. Referral may be made at anytimeduring the school year and even during the summer.We identify students at all grade levels. Once a referralis made, written permission must be obtained fromparents or guardians in order for theidentification/placement process to begin.The identification/placement file includes thestudent s school records, standardized test scores,grades and information from teachers, parents and thestudent. Other information (samples of student workor self-initiated projects) is also considered.Student case profiles are developed by <strong>Hylton</strong>’s <strong>School</strong>Level Committee and forwarded to the Division LevelCommittee for a decision. Both committees are composedof representatives from administration and counseling, aswell as members of the gifted education staff and classroomteachers. The contest is formiddle and high school students of the Russian language.More than 1,200 pre-college students participated in this year’scontest, writing essays on the topic “Whytravel?”Student participants write an essay on an assigned topic undercontrolled circumstances. Essays are evaluated by a panel ofjudges who assign gold, silver, or bronze medals or HonorableMention status.“Please accept our congratulations on your school’s Russianprogram and appreciation of your support for the study of thisimportant language. Russian is recognized as being one of thelanguages critical for our national security, and we need strongprograms at all levels of study,” wrote Jane W. World Language DepartmentMarch has been a whirlwind month for the WorldLanguages Department. Foreign Language week hasexpanded into Foreign Language Month because we havehad so manyactivities!The theme for this year has been Languages Make theWorld Go Round. Each year the department sponsors aposter contest to promote foreign language study. Thewinners of the poster contest this year are:1st Prize: Rachel Cabosky2 nd Prize: Alyssa Roman3 rd Prize: Samantha DamandaThe winners received movie passes to AMC Potomac Millsin the amounts of $30, $20, and $10 respectively.On March 8 the Mardi Gras Ball was held in theCommons under the sponsorship of Ms. DeFerre and Ms.Banaszak. The students had a wonderful time dancing andwearing their Venetian-style masks.The National Latin Exam was held on March 16. Forty-fiveLatin students from levels I-IV participated in thisnationwide competition. The same evening the jointinductions of the French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian,and Spanish Honor Societies were held. Collectively, 50students were welcomed into these prestigiousorganizations.On March 19 Les Folies Francaises were held at Gar-Field<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. This celebration was organized as a countywideevent and a number of <strong>Hylton</strong> students spent the dayat Gar-Field participating in competitions and culturalclasses. D. <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Absence PolicyWhat to do if a student…is absent from school (Absence)Within two days of returning to school, the student must present a written note, stating the reason for the absence,signed and dated by the parent/guardian with a daytime phone number. All notes must be submitted to theAttendance Office. All notes submitted after the 3 rd day will need to be approved by Ms. Weiler, the AssistantPrincipal responsible for attendance.…arrives to school after 7:30 a.m. (Tardy)If a student arrives to school after 7:30 a.m., they must report to the main/front office and obtain a tardy pass. If thestudent arrives to school with an EXCUSED tardy (signed note from parent/guardian) they will report to theAttendance Office instead of the main/front office. If a student continues to accumulate excessive excused tardiesduring a marking period (10 excused per semester), a doctor’s note maybe required.…becomes ill while in schoolStudents who become ill during school need to obtain a pass from their teacher to report to the clinic and sign out.The clinic will contact the parent and an earlydismissal will be granted.…needs to leave school early(EarlyDismissal)If a student needs to leave school early, the request must be made through the Attendance Office. It must include thereason for leaving, the time for the dismissal, and the parent/guardian signature including a daytime phone number forverification. The early dismissal will only be granted after verbal confirmation is received from the parent/guardian.<strong>Parent</strong>s should not call during the school day to have students released early. If it does become necessary,however, parents must physically come into the building to have their student released.
