Ученики Хилтона хорошо говорят по-русски!<strong>Hylton</strong> Students Speak Russian Well!As the Russian language program at <strong>Hylton</strong> continues to expand, studentshave achieved success in a number of national and international forums.Last fall at the annual National Russian Essay Contest, juniors Sydney Millar and Marie Mach wereawarded international gold medals by the Pushkin Institute of Moscow. Shannon Rogers, Wynter Earlyand Curtis Martin earned medals at the national level.This spring three students were given fully funded scholarships for study abroad under the U.S. Departmentof State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth. Joshua Yarrington will study inKazan, Russia this summer while Marie Mach will be learning Tajiki Persian in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.Sydney Millar will spend the entire <strong>2013</strong>-14 school year at Kazan State University in Russia.In late April many Russian language students participated in the Virginia State Olympiada of SpokenRussian at George Mason University. Each student, even Level I, were required to speak with Russianjudges for 15-20 minutes. Gold medals were earned by Alena Kamenskaya, Marie Mach and SydneyMillar. Silver medalists include Iain Calhoun, Chadwick Deem, Alex Kang, Nathan Semidey, RihaanaStephens, Richard Kline, Curtis Martin, Joshua Yarrington, Valentina Balatsenko, Maryann Hart andShannon Rogers. Bronze medals were earned by Katelyn Sater, Gryphon Stauffer, Natasha Conerly,Darlene Flucker, Kevin Franqui and Kelsey <strong>High</strong>lands.<strong>Hylton</strong> students arriving at George Mason University before the Olympiada.Have a safe and restful summer! 4

Portable ClassroomsBased on our current student enrollment, projectionsof additional students for next year and our desireto provide enough space for the educational needsof students, the <strong>School</strong> Division will be installing fivenew portable classrooms at our school site thissummer.The Office of Facilities Services is in the process ofdetermining the best location on our school site for thenew portable classrooms. Some of the factors affectingwhere the portable classrooms will be placed includestudent safety, accessibility to the school building,and proximity to restrooms, electrical, and otherrequired services.Please be sure to pick up all medications sent into theclinic by <strong>June</strong> 17 th . As per PWCS Regulation # 757-4,all medications will be disposed on the last day ofschool, if not picked up by a parent or guardian.Medications can not be carried over from year to year.Students are not allowed to bring home medicationsfrom the clinic.The new portable classrooms will be moved to theschool property in late <strong>June</strong> /early July, and set up foruse before September. As with all portable classroominstallations, this is a temporary measure until permanentaccommodations can be made.If you have a child that requires a Health Treatmentplan, please be sure you have the form completed byAugust for next school year (<strong>2013</strong>/2014). Forms maybe obtained from the PWCS website or at the clinic.Please be sure that you and your student use sunscreenwhen outdoors and get plenty of water. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL HOLDING MIDDLE SCHOOL CLINICThe <strong>Hylton</strong> girls Volleyball program will be holding its annual Middle <strong>School</strong> Clinic on Wednesday, August14, <strong>2013</strong> from 5-8 p.m. in the gymnasium of <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. All females entering grades 6-8 for the<strong>2013</strong>-14 school year are welcome to attend. Summer <strong>School</strong>Students in grades 9–12 may take courses for new or repeat credit.With approval from the student’s home school administrator or designee,rising ninth-grade students (2012–13 current eighth grade students) may alsotake high school classes for course credit. The high school registrationForm C must be completed to register for the course.Additionally, a two-week SOL Remediation course will be held for all end-of-course tests and theSOL will be administered at the end of the class. Students enrolled in a Virginia <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong> andwho have passed the high school tested course may also register to take the SOL test only.The high school summer school program information and registration form (Form C) for highschool students is located on the PWCS website. Summer high school students will not receiveinformation before the start of summer school.Please check the PWCS transportation web page for the shuttle bus pick up times from each highschool. Each high school will post the shuttle bus pick up and drop off times for their schoolapproximately one week prior to the start of summer school. Upon arrival at the summer highschool location, there will be staff to direct students to their classrooms.On the first day of class information regarding the summer school program will be sent home withthe student. Registration ends for the high school program on Tuesday, <strong>June</strong> 18, 2012. Late registrationwill be held on Thursday, <strong>June</strong> 20 and Friday, <strong>June</strong> 21, <strong>2013</strong> from 9 a.m. through12 noonat <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Summer school classes for high school students begin Monday, <strong>June</strong> 24,<strong>2013</strong>.Driver Education Mandatory Parent/Student Meeting<strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> will host a Driver Education mandatory Parent/Studentmeeting on Monday, July 1, <strong>2013</strong> at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Doorswill be closed once the presentation begins. It is mandatory that parents andstudents participate in the entire 90 minute presentation.The high school summer school program at <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> will offer only the classroom componentof driver education. Students should complete the regular high school summer registrationform C.The classroom-only portion of Driver Education will be held from <strong>June</strong> 24, <strong>2013</strong>, through Friday,July 5, <strong>2013</strong> during regular summer school hours. Please remember, Thursday, July 4 isa holiday and school will not be in session. The cost for the classroom-only portion is $140.00.Tuition is expected at the time of registration payable to PWCS in the form of a cashier’s checkor money order for the classroom portion of driver education. The Driver Education Road andRange (in-car) program is offered through your student’s school.
