Honorable Mention: Grant County
Herald Independent, Lancaster:
“Library groundbreaking” - David
Timmerman: Terrific shot of what
is normally a boring activity. Not so
here! Love the sod flying through the
air. Great new spin on old photo.
Group F
First Award: Manawa Messenger, Clintonville:
“Dance Off ” - Haley Ingersoll:
Great capture and fantastic expression!
Second Award: Jackson County
Chronicle, Black River Falls: “Corn
Dog” - Scott Carey: This photo made
us laugh. Great picture and way to
go getting down to the dog’s point of
view. Good headline for the photo!
Third Award: Clintonville Chronicle:
“Boy with Tongue” - Tricia Rose: Nice
candid! Like how the background is
slightly out of focus and the child is
very sharp.
Honorable Mention: Sauk Prairie
Eagle, Baraboo: “Into the snowy skies”
- Kim Lamoreaux: We love the subject
matter and recognize the difficulty of
capturing such a shot.
Spot News Photo
The Verona Press, First Award, Group E, Spot News Photo
Group A
First Award: The Post-Crescent, Appleton:
“Major Fire” - William Glasheen:
Just the right position to show the wild
flames, great billowing smoke, firefighter
activity and the environment.
Second Award: The Capital Times,
Madison: “First same-sex marriages in
Dane County” - Mike DeVries: Nice
position and composition captures the
emotion of the couple and their supporters.
Third Award: The Post-Crescent,
Appleton: “Battling a barn fire” -
Dan Powers: Great story beyond the
routine fire-damages-barn/business,
conveyed in the pose of the mother
and son shown in the foreground with
the firefighters and damaged barn in
the background.
Honorable Mention: Green Bay
Press-Gazette: “Infant death” - Jim
Matthews: Strong emotion might have
been strengthened by a tighter crop.
Editorial 21
Group B
First Award: The Reporter, Fond du
Lac: “FDL standoff ends peacefully” -
Aileen Andrews: Two dramatic photos
very well convey the scenario of a
bizarre incident. Great work.
Second Award: Kenosha News: “Man
dies in one-car crash on I-94 off-ramp”
- Brian Passino: Very remarkable devastation
to a vehicle makes the viewer
wonder how it happened. Firetruck in
the middle, on the plus-side, serves as
a curtain revealing two widely separated
debris fields; on the minus-side,
hides what’s behind.
Third Award: Leader-Telegram, Eau
Claire: “Search for Missing Canoeist”
- Steve Kinderman: A great vantage
point shows the drama of the rescue
attempt unfolding. A very unusual
spot news photo
Honorable Mention: The Reporter,
Fond du Lac: “Sturgeon stalking”
- Patrick Flood: This image was a
stand-out visually and showed ingenuity
in getting off the ground to get an
unique angle showing the isolation
and also the recent activity from the
snow tracks.
Group C
First Award: The Monroe Times:
“Storms leave trail of damage” -
Anthony Wahl: First-, second- and
third-place photos all reflect a dramatic
moment for a family, but this one
tells two stories. The overall, as well as
a more specific personal, story with a
very unique view.
Second Award: Daily News, West
Bend: “Slinger Train Derailment” -
John Ehlke: A tender human-interest
view of a breaking news story. Nice
touch looking deeper into the story.
Third Award: Portage Daily Register:
“Fire destroys Portage home” - Shannon
Green: Big flames always make
for a dramatic photo, but the billowing
smoke really helps to convey the damage
done. Nice positioning of the two
firefighters.
Honorable Mention: Watertown Daily
Times: “Birds of a feather” - Sarah
Weihert: Very surprising to see the
three hummingbirds at the feeder at
right all in almost the same position of
approach. Nice composition.
Group D
First Award: North Shore NOW,
Waukesha: Jeff Rumage: Skilled news
pictures like this cut to the emotion of
an event. Had to be ready to get this
one. Good crop. Great shot of some
tough news.
Second Award: Courier Press, Prairie
du Chien: “‘Best friends’ escape
rollover” - Correne Martin: What a
moment; close second. Good focus,
crop, instinct. Great shot that captures
real emotion.
Third Award: The Country Today, Eau
Claire: “Technology contrast” - Jim
Massey: Great juxtaposition, obviously.
Makes a pretty mundane picture
into something very creative. Way to
keep your eyes open.
Group E
First Award: The Verona Press: “Twister
shreds school” - Scott Girard: Knew
this was the winner the instant I saw
it. Heartbreaking, technically solid,
great crop—and, best, drives home the
news. Good instinct to get inside the
classroom. An excellent shot amongst
tough competition.
Second Award: Ripon Commonwealth
Press: “Fire scorches Brandon Marsh”
- Aaron Becker: A very artistic shot.
I love the balance, the frame, the firefighter’s
interesting pose, the surreal
smoke/flames as a backdrop. I love this
picture.
