Editorial 29
angle and reflection are so eye-catching
for that first shot of the mud run.
The colors pop, there’s good hierarchy,
emotion, timing, framing. Cutlines
don’t intrude. So much done right.
Second Award: Muskego-New Berlin
NOW, Waukesha: “Skimming the
waves” - Peter Zuzga: Slightly crowded
layout, but emotional impact and solid
photography make up for it. Good
variation of zoom and focus. Beautiful
portrait and some nice timing on
display. Well done.
Third Award: Waukesha NOW -
Scott Ash: Impact layout; love it. The
excitement of the kids just explodes
off the page. Perfect timing, tidy text
and great cropping make the page
click, even for the top picture, which
provided good context and fit, but is
somewhat more tame than the rest.
Group E
First Award: Oconomowoc Focus,
Hartland: “OHS presents Hairspray”
- Scott Ash: Composition is perfect.
Action moves from dramatic pose at
left, action shot that’s moving right
carries the eye clockwise around the
page. Good mix of close-ups and
wider shots. Top-notch photography,
laid out neatly and for huge impact.
Great work.
Second Award: Ripon Commonwealth
Press: Staff : Standing on the weight
of doing great things with a variety
of staff and submitted pictures, I love
the decision making and the layout.
Perfect to use the silhouette shot as
primary. The rest have great context or
juxtaposition, with icicles on firefighters’
helmets with the glow of flames in
the background, etc.
Third Award: Lake Geneva Regional
News: Sarah Schauf: Beautiful images,
with the mist on the lake, the lens
flares, the water splashing. Could have
benefited from one or two fewer pictures,
but otherwise has strong layout
and good photography.
Honorable Mention: Ripon
Commonwealth Press: “Fall fun (for
all)” - Ian Stepleton, Aaron Becker:
There is such creativity on display
here. Could have benefited from a bit
more white space or a couple fewer
pictures, but is well-organized and
captures the day. Love the emotion
and creative framing.
Group F
First Award: Sussex Sun, Hartland:
“Sendoff with Love” - Todd Ponath:
Captures a day of raw emotion with
intimate, touching photos. Creative,
strong cropping. Great timing on
and knows where the focus should be.
Strong layout compliments excellent,
powerful images.
Second Award: Jackson County
Chronicle, Black River Falls: “Flavors of
the Fair” - Cassandra Colson: I’ve not
seen any better summation of a county
fair. These are joyous and well-timed
for the most part. Great variety. Layout
was strong but still ends up a tiny bit
cluttered.
Third Award: Washburn County
Register, Shell Lake: Larry Samson:
Photographer has a great eye and
sense of timing; was willing to get
close and got shots from near and far.
Decent layout, great color.
