Editorial 37
The kid’s commentary – and the
thoughtful editing – made this entry
an absolute pleasure to digest. Clever!
Third Award: Lake Country Reporter,
Hartland: “The heartbreak of
heroin: Grieving mother tells story of
daughter’s descent, Opiate addiction
a ‘plague’ in Lake Country” - Donna
Frakel, Michael Meidenbauer, Steve
Garrison, Kaitlin Phillips, Carol Spaeth-Bauer:
Painful story ... thoughtfully
presented through a number of
access points. A real public service.
Honorable Mention: Waupaca County
Post (formerly County Post West),
Waupaca: “Relay teams stand out at
state “- Robert Cloud, Greg Seubert,
Holly Neumann: Great photos, great
writing, nice video!
Web Special Project
Group D
First Award: Ripon Commonwealth
Press: “Coverage of the historic Watson
Street fire” - Staff: Your staff put a lot of
time and effort into covering this fire
and it showed in your vast array of content.
I loved the landing page so readers
could easily bookmark that for the most
current news on the fire. Your coverage
included everything — videos, audio of
the 911 call, photo galleries, first-person
accounts, follow-up stories, letters from
readers and an online poll. Bravo.
Second Award: Lake Country Reporter,
Hartland: “The heartbreak of heroin:
Grieving mother tells story of daughter’s
descent Opiate addiction a ‘plague’ in
Lake Country” - Michael Meidenbauer,
Donna Frake, Steve Garrison, Kaitlin
Phillips, Carol Spaeth-Bauer: You used a
lot of great methods to tell this important
story. From your audio clips to your
interactive map, your online readers had
a lot of extras to digest. The sidebar with
links to your past content is such a great
idea. Rather than linking to old content
in your new story, when you’ve covered
a series as well as you have and have
so many past stories, it’s smart to pull
them out and make it easy for readers to
maneuver through it all.
Third Award: Sussex Sun, Hartland:
“Butler PD Under Fire” - Michael
Meidenbauer, Kelly Smith: You created a
really nice timeline with links to mustread
documents and past stories in this
ever-evolving tale of police misconduct.
My only suggestion would be to include
a link to a story with every timeline
entry. There were times when documents
were the only thing linked on the
timeline and it would have been nice to
also have been able to read the most current
story as of that time.
Honorable Mention: Ripon Commonwealth
Press: “The Shot” - Jonathan
Bailey: What a great video. It shows the
raw emotion of a championship game.
Not to mention, the buzzer-beater ending.
The only thing that could have been
made it even better was to have had an
interview with Ben. Smart decision to
include the video with all of the followup
stories, as well. When you have a
goldmine like that (100,000+ views),
keep pushing it out to as many online
audiences as you can.
First Award: Green Bay Press-Gazette:
“Public service-Tornado sirens”- Doug
Schneider: This is what social media
is about: getting information out and
being part the solution to problems. To
do that, we must be interactive in our
communities. This is a perfect illustration
of that.
Second Award: The Post-Crescent,
Appleton: “Dudas Trial” - Ariel Cheung:
Knowing what the people want to
know about is important. Time was we
couldn’t compete with television and radio;
now we can. This proves people are
turning to us for information ... which is
very, very good news.
Third Award: The Post-Crescent, Appleton:
Education coverage, breaking news
- Jen Zettel: Interacting with readers is a
great thing to do. This is such a new tool
for newspaper reporters; this particular
reporter knows how to make it work.
First Award: The Capital Times,
Madison - Staff: Very clean design
and easily navigable between pages
and sections. Easy to pick out items of
interest. Good community engagement
on the race issue. Very good interactive
graphics.
Second Award: Green Bay Press-
Gazette and PackersNews.com - Staff:
Basic design the same for the second
and third places. What sets this entry
apart is the Packer coverage for a very
passionate fan base. One drawback:
Design causes these impact pages to be
slightly busy.
