HMNZS MANAWANUI
IT’S BEEN a busy time for MANAWANUI,
having just completed a three week IMAV
period where a couple of major upgrades
were completed.
• The computer server was moved from the
MEO’s cabin down two decks to a new home
next to the engineer’s workshop.
• The Breathable Air Supply System was
upgraded so that the new DCBA cylinders
can be charged to their full capacity of 300
bar.
• The dining hall was also given a make over
and now is complete with a flat screen TV
and new fridges. It’s a vast improvement on
the old set up and there is now more room
for meals and briefings.
After the completion of the IMAV the
ship entered a trials period were all the
new equipment was tested and a few cobwebs
cleared out from the crew. A Safety
And Readiness Check (SARC) Harbour was
conducted on 1 August followed by Sea
Acceptance Trials the next day, and finally a
MOET-assessed SARC(Sea) that Friday. This
was a full-on day with man-over-board drills,
toxic gases exercises, helicopter vertical
replenishment operations and concluding
with a large engine room ‘fire’. The ship’s
company attacked the day with their usual
MANAWANUI enthusiasm which was noted
by MOET staff, the outcome being that the
ship completed all evolutions to a good
and safe standard. Of special note was the
Chefs’ smoked fish pie for lunch, which was
warmly received by the Green Team and put
the ships company in good steed for the
afternoon’s activities.
The following week MANAWANUI assisted
an Army unit in an exercise involving parachutists,
Army and Navy RHIBs, an RNZAF
C-130 Hercules and a chartered civilian boat.
As the exercise began it made a very impressive
sight to see these all at work. Some of
AMED Chloe Andrews about to be winched down to the ship
during MANAWANUI’s safety and readiness check.
The Ship’s Medical Emergency Team
attend to a ‘casualty’ (l to r) LCH Bowden,
ACH Davidson, AMED Andrews.
soldiers had never been on a naval vessel
before and were impressed to see the way
we live and work, especially as some of them
thought they would have to spend their fourhour
trip on board, outside in the cold! A hot
meal and a shower certainly changed their
minds about what the Navy does and how
we do it. The ship’s company also enjoyed
the opportunity to be involved in a slightly different
type of exercise and we look forward
to working with the Army again.
For the remainder of August and into this
month, MANAWANUI returned to its role
as Diving Tender by assisting with the Leading
Divers Course. They were embarked for
a two week period during which time they
used the ship’s surface-supplied breathing
equipment and wet diving bell around the
coast of Great Barrier Island. We are also
showing our versatility with another period
on Op ORION this month.
