To all former serving members of HMNZS CANTERBURY (F421);
with the passing of the last of our Leanders and her final sinking
planned for mid-October, a steering committee has been formed to
set up a Canterbury Association so the memories can live on.

INTERSHIP NETBALL
NAVY’S INTER-SHIP tournament was held
on 1 August. The tournament started at
the Netball courts but moved inside to the
gym because of the weather - eight teams
entered, including the new CANTERBURY
(their first Inter-ship tournament).
With over 100 people involved it was
good to see so many people getting out
and showing off their skills.
The mixed competition was played at a
fast pace; the level of skill shown by both
men and women was very high and this
was shown in the final where TE MANA
defeated PHILLOMEL Black 14-13 in a
close match.
The Womens competition had three teams
competing, two from PHILOMEL.
The final was between PHILOMEL Black
and TE KAHA, with Philly Black winning
17-5. All the ladies who played in the Women’s
competition also played in the Mixed,
so it was a long day for them.
Many close matches during the round robins
made it a good day for a lot of people to
show off their skills before the Inter-Service
selectors.

RNZN MOTORCYCLE CLUB:
Ever miss an open winding road, the thrill of acceleration and find
yourself hanging out for the weekend so you can go for a ride?
Well…the RNZN Motorcycle Club has been re-established! The
RNZN Motorcycle Club’s aims are:
• To promote recreational riding within the RNZN.
• Advise members on safety, mechanical and financial aspects
of their machines.
• Organise opportunities to take part in all forms of sport and
recreational motorcycling events.
• Encourage and promote liaison between other clubs, both at
home and abroad.
It costs nothing to join the club and activities will be funded on
a user pays basis.

SOCCER

In preparation for the Inter-Services Soccer
tournament, Inter-ship Soccer was played at
Ngataringa in August:
PHILOMEL Blue (3) vs New Ship ROTOITI (1)
It was good to see our new ships starting to
participate in Inter-ship sports
PHILOMEL Black (5) vs TE MANA (1)
Played in difficult windy conditions, the game
see-sawed and was 1-all at half time.
Women: Ship (1) vs Shore (5)
A cold and windy day, but the shore girls were
too strong for the ship ladies.
The Men’s final: PHILOMEL Black (2) vs
PHILOMEL Blue (0)
CPORS Dave Kaio did an awesome job as
goalkeeper for Blue, but the pressure took
its toll as LCH Rez Garrett skidded one past.
The second half started with Blue putting
the pressure on but Philly Black struck the
winning goal late in the half.

and to LTCDR Hester and CPOWF Dyer for
refereeing.
