LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS ARE GROWING
Once again Camden Haven High School and Laurieton Community College extended student learning
experiences by delivering competencies in the Horticulture Industry vocational course. Students were
enrolled in the College and completed their studies through a combination of open learning and field
work for the practical lessons.
Ms Monica O’Riely, Horticulture teacher at the college, made use of the community gardens in
Laurieton to assist students with plant identification, plant care and other competencies specific to
horticulture. She has indicated that Thomas Fajks and Ella Mazoudier (both pictured) were exceptional
in their studies and looks forward to offering this course again next year.
The school sees this as an opportunity to offer students in Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) an extension to
their normal school subjects. Thanks goes to the staff at the college, especially Ms Joneen Troupe for
her continual support and financial assistance.
RIVER SESH
For the past two years a dedicated group of senior students from Camden Haven High School have
been the driving force behind River Sesh. River Sesh is an annual event which provides young local
artists with a safe environment to showcase their talents. This year’s cohort is keen to keep the
tradition going and build on the success of previous years.
Visual Arts student and designer of this year’s poster, Brigette Beyer, says “River Sesh provides an
avenue for the youth of the Camden Haven/Hastings area to participate in a major event and express
themselves creatively.”
River Sesh will be held at Laurieton United Servicemen’s Club (LUSC) on Saturday 21 July 2012. The
event starts at 6pm in LUSC Sports Bar.
For a gold coin donation, under 25s can enjoy an evening of fantastic music, beautiful views, wonderful
company and a sausage sizzle. River Sesh is strictly a drug and alcohol free event. Please contact
Camden Haven High School for further details.
BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER
Winter’s chill has arrived and with it our scramble for heaters, electric blankets and open fires.
Entertaining is now year round thanks to portable outdoor gas heaters. But with all these
conveniences come fire dangers. Statistics reveal that almost half of all home fires are started in
the kitchen and 43 per cent of all fire fatalities occur in winter.
NSW Fire and Rescue reminds us to do a fire safety audit of our homes this winter, check smoke
detectors are working and ensure appliances such as clothes dryers and dishwashers are running
efficiently and safely. For more household fact sheets and useful videos on how to protect your
home and family from fire go to www.fire.nsw.gov.au/
VOLUNTEERING FOR HAPPINESS
Volunteering is the giving of your time, expertise or skills to help others. Most not-for-profit
organisations rely on volunteers to keep running to provide goods and services to those who need them.
Research also shows that volunteering makes you feel good!
So if you or your teen can spare some time to help out in your community, check out the new improved
Volunteering NSW website: www.volunteering.nsw.gov.au

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP GROUP
On Monday 18 June teachers Mrs Sharon Wilson and Mr Darren Mearrick took a group of girls to learn
about different careers in action.
First stop was the law courts in Port Macquarie. The girls watched two courts in operation – the Local
Court and the District Court. They saw how a jury was selected and also watched a Magistrate in action.
During court recess the Magistrate spoke with the girls about law and careers in law.
Next stop was the police station and the girls soon realised that it would be best and far more
comfortable to stay on the ‘right’ side of the law. The holding cells were toured and they had a talk
from Senior Constable Steve Cherry regarding opportunities in the Police Force and recruitment, along
with the day-to-day operations and responsibilities of maintaining the law in our community.
The last stop of the day was Port Macquarie Hastings Council where they were greeted by
Administrator, Neil Porter, along with council managers, Juliet Van Oirschot – Human Resources
Manager, Jaclyne Fisher – Manager of Community Services and Beth Flynn – Social Planner. Mr Porter
spoke to the girls regarding the need to get a diverse range of people in council, both as councillors and
council workers. The three female managers then spoke with the group. They were truly inspirational
and told the girls their stories of managing in a high level of local government, their obstacles and
qualifications. They also emphasised the need for girls to gain an education so they can have the power
of choice as to what they want to do when they are older.

JUNIOR AECG ESTABLISHED AT CHHS
Aboriginal student leaders have come together from across the entire school to create the first Junior
Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). The idea was first ‘floated’ by Auntie Betty Niddrie, and
has blossomed into life due to the enthusiasm of the students themselves.
AECG’s promote respect, empowerment and self-determination and have become integral to achieving
equity in education. AECG’s advocate cultural affirmation, integrity and the pursuit of equality. They
focus on delivery of the six domains of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
Action Plan.
The new team have immediately set about tasks such as organising NAIDOC week celebrations for Week
1 Term 3, and in the last week of Term 2, an introduction to country at a specific site in Port Macquarie
with esteemed Biripai Elder, Uncle Bill. The Junior AECG will also create a community newsletter called
‘The Koorier’.
The team will hold formal elections to establish positions in Term 4 for 2013. The interim leadership
team includes Amelia Cook Webber as President, supported by Heidi Bell, Tannah Munson, Tainga
Savage, Caitlin Walpole, Bryce Hayward, Indiya Agnew-Crawford, Tamar Elvin and Blake Kennedy.
Congratulations to all these fine future leaders.
JESUS RACING LIFE CHOICES
Seminar
On Friday 8 June our school had the privilege of having a V8 racing car driver with us – Andrew ‘Fishtail’
Fisher. Andrew drives the Jesus All About Life V8 Ute as part of the high profile V8 Supercar program.
During the seminar which Andrew conducted, students were excited when they saw some outstanding
visual images of racing and some breathtaking, heart stopping moments in a race car. Our students
listened attentively to Andrew speak about courage and the making of courageous decisions in one’s life
instead of impulse decisions. The seminar focused on the issues of smoking, drinking, drugs, teenage
sex, speeding and God. Many statistics were presented to the students on these issues and Andrew also
shared some heart-wrenching experiences which brought tears to the eyes of many.
Andrew shared the story about his daughter Lily who was born with half a heart. He was told by medical
experts that the most humane thing that he could do was to let his child die … Andrew and his wife
Annie chose to go against the doctor’s advice and decided to give their daughter a chance at life. This
courageous decision was shared and not a murmur could be heard from the audience.
“In the future I will plan to show courage and when someone needs help, I will help them” and “In the
future I plan to show courage, when someone tells me to do something I don’t want to do, I plan to say
NO!” are just a few comments from our students after the seminar.
A replica of the Jesus ute held prime position in the quad during lunchtime. There was a long line of
students waiting patiently to receive Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher’s autograph and have photos taken with
him. When the ute’s engine was revved up, all eyes were glued to the car. Some students even had the
opportunity of trying to beat a world class racing car driver in a game of handball.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL
Getting outside or just a short while everyday is healthy in many ways. In just 10-20 minutes you can
receive your daily dose of vitamin D, important for bones, muscles and overall health. Vitamin D is not
readily available from food, so good old fashioned sunlight for a few minutes a day (outside peak UV
times of course) is the best way to get it. Heading outside also ensures you and your kids get some
physical exercise and a break from TV and computer screens. For more ideas to get physical go to:
www.activekids.org.au/
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS SORTED
The school holidays are fast approaching. For great activities to keep the kids gainfully occupied check
out the informative Go Play website which is full of ideas for kids aged up to 18 years. You can search by
age, activity, region, date, time and by government organisation. Go to: www.goplay.nsw.gov.au

BOYS TENNIS
The Camden Haven boy’s tennis campaign for 2012 has now come to an end after they were
defeated six sets to two by Coffs Harbour Senior College.
The schedule this year has not involved a lot of tennis, but the boys reached the North Coast
Region semi-final. We received a bye in round one, a forfeit in round two and defeated Wauchope
in round three.

The semi final match against Coffs Harbour Senior College at Kempsey saw the first two doubles
sets shared. Blake Clarke and Joshua Kelly defeated the opposition 6/4 whilst in the other doubles
match Jayden and Blake Hudson went down to the tune of 6/1.
The quality of the tennis was extremely high, with strong ground strokes and attacking play at the
net. Blake Clarke is ranked highly in the state for his age but there were two very classy players in
the opposition. It must be remembered that the opposition were in Year 11 and 12, while the
Camden Haven boys are in Year 8, 9 and 12.
In the singles, Jayden went down 6/1 to a very strong competitor. Blake H battled long and hard
for a 6/4 victory over his opposition. Blake C also played a classy opponent and was down 0/5
before he fought back to lose 6/4 in a top quality set. Josh lost his singles 6/3 which was an
extremely good result for a player in his first representative match.
In the reverse doubles, Jayden and Blake H lost 6/4, while Blake C and Josh lost 6/1. The final
result was Coffs Harbour 6 sets - 42 games to Camden Haven 2 sets – 26 games.
This was the last sporting representation at Camden Haven High School for Jayden – a sportsman
who shows great determination, sportsmanship and a very thoughtful approach to the game. He
always keeps a cool head and has been Captain of both the school cricket and tennis teams. He
has acted as Captain, Coach and Manager of the tennis team for several years.
CANTEEN NEWS
The students are enjoying the hot meals that we have on offer during the colder months:
pasta bolognaise, chicken and gravy rolls, fried rice, beef stir fries, toasted sandwiches and chicken curry
pies.
Thanks once again to all our wonderful volunteers. As always, we are looking for more volunteers for
the canteen. Volunteering involves making sandwiches, salads and wraps for recess and lunch as well as
serving the food to the students. There is NO NEED TO HANDLE ANY MONEY. You can volunteer once a
week, once a month or once a term, even if you can only spare a couple of hours on a day. Any time you
can spare would be greatly appreciated. It would be great to have some new volunteers to help our
committed regular volunteers.
If you can assist in any way please give Amanda or Susan a call on 6556 8120.
OH&S regulations require us to wear covered in shoes and keep long hair tied back whilst in the canteen.
