Hollie Gazzard Anniversary
4 5
Hundreds of people gathered in support Hollie Gazzard’s family at the memorial
service to mark the first anniversary of Hollie’s death. Those attending
included the Police and paramedics who were first on the scene along
with the whole Police investigating team.
funeral. This was followed by a minutes
silence at 6.51, the exact time
that Hollie passed away. Despite
the tears, Hollies dad wanted those
attending to remember the happy
times and the positive work that the
Trust was now doing as a great legacy
to Hollie.
Flowers were laid and candles lit outside the Fringe Benefits Salon in Southgate
Street where Hollie’s life was tragically cut short. The service was
opened by Ellie Higgs singing Bruno Mars hit ‘Just The Way You Are’, the
song that Hollie’s coffin entered the Cathedral to a year ago.
Hollie’s father Nick addressed the hundreds of people attending stating that
“It is sad Hollie is not here but tonight is about celebrating her life and the
last 20 years. A year ago events changed our lives forever, which we will
never get over. We have all had different strategies with how to cope with
it. Hollie was very fun loving and had lots of dreams. She was only here for
20 years but she packed more in that 20 years than most people do in a
lifetime. She travelled and had seven roles in hairdressing in different parts
of the country, including the cruise liner she worked on. She made an enormous
amount of friends.”
Reverend Canon Neil Heavisides from Gloucester Cathedral then praised
the Gazzard family for setting
an example by setting up the
Trust and helping others. He
said. “There are three people
we would all like to thank and
that is Nick, Mandy and Chloe
for setting an example, the way
they have built on Hollie’s life
and are trying to improve the
lives of others.”
The family invited everyone back to
the King Teddy in Longlevens where
Hollie worked to enjoy one of her
Cocktails.
The service was ended by Ellie
Higgs singing Diamonds by Rhianna.
Ellie said: “I was honoured to sing at
the service. It was incredibly emotional,
I was a little nervous
because there were so many
people, but it went well.”
The Trust raised £85,000
last year and they supported
the funding of 4 hairdressers
at Gloucestershire College,
financing the cost of
youth workers at increase
the Peace and supporting the
delivery of healthy relationship
workshops in a number
of senior schools through GDASS. This year they have a number of new
projects and initiatives that they want to run costing £250,000.
Prayers were then said by the
former St Johns Churchdown reverend Katy Morgan, who spoke at Hollie’s
I was referred to LNH Management Solutions when
looking to setup a new business venture. I’ve been very
pleased with the time Lee initially spent with me advising
on the business structure and helping with all of the
necessary set-up and registration requirements. Since
this, Lee regularly keeps contact to ensure the business is
running smoothly and has always been available to offer
his support in a personal and approachable manner. I’ve
been highly impressed with his services and would have
no hesitation in recommending him to other small businesses.
people’s kitchens and bathrooms. Bathroom
company have told me they do so as the
project management is excellent, her
They know their customers are in
Dear Chris and Caroline, Thank you again for the
outstanding service. As you know, I had a specific
idea in mind which had some unusual features.
I did not feel confident that the first company I
approached could achieve the design I wanted
after their repeated failure to provide a drawing
to my specifications. In contrast you provided the
drawing I needed quickly and efficiently which,
together with your professional and caring
approach, left me in no doubt about placing an
order with you. My mother and I are delighted
with the stone, and I know my father would have
liked it. It’s funny but it seems so appropriate for
him, with its height, slim width and stylish
features. I hope I can equal your high standards
in the small planting area in front of the stone
with my flowers.
You both do such an important job and you do it
extremely well.
Best wishes Julia Wynn
changed with the introduction of a fourth day, meaning there would be one championship
race on each day, climaxing with the Gold Cup on the Friday.
To ensure each days would still have six races, five new races were introduced.
Two further races have since been added, bringing the total to 26 races overall,
with grade one events including the
Champion Bumper, Triumph Hurdle,
Ryanair Chase, Supreme Novices’
Hurdle, Neptune Investment Management
Novices’ Hurdle, Arkle Challenge
Trophy, RSA Chase, Champion Hurdle,
World Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion
Chase and the feature race, the
Gold Cup.
The festival also includes one of the
two biggest Hunter Chases of the season, the Foxhunters’, which is run on the
History
Friday over the same course as the Gold Cup, and is sometimes referred to as the
“amateurs’ Gold Cup”.
The official title of the Cheltenham Festival is the National Hunt Meeting. This originated
in 1860, when the National Hunt Chase was first held at Market Harborough and CheltenhamFestival does not have a history of attracting many international con-
The 2010 Cheltenham Festival had the first ever running of the Ladies Charity Flat
It was staged over a new course established
Race in aid of Cancer Research UK. The race was contested over 1 mile 5 furlongs,
at Prestbury Park in Cheltenham in 1902, although
racing had taken place there previ-
front of a packed Cheltenham grandstand by Dublin-based Orna Madden riding
and all 12 amateur jockeys were female. The race was won in a photo-finish in
The centrepiece Cheltenham Gold Cup, established
Champion Hurdle being introduced in 1927,
the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1959, and finally the Stayers Hurdle, which was
first run in 1972. In 2001 the Festival was cancelled due to an outbreak of foot-andmouth
disease in Britain. The meeting had initially been postponed to April, but when
a case of the disease was confirmed locally, putting the racecourse within an exclusion
zone, all racing had to be called off.
In 2008, the second day of the festival was cancelled due to heavy storms. The races
scheduled for that day were instead run on the third and final days of the festival. Until
2005 the festival had traditionally been held over the course of three days, but this
ADDICTED AND RECOVERING
14 15
One persons story from adiction and the road
to recovery
I started gambling when I was 17 years old...
...I was attending GlosCol in Cheltenham and got friendly with a lad who liked
the odd bet on horses and football. My
gambling carried on normally into my first
employed job where I could pop to
the bookies a few times a week to bet on
horses, again this was on £1 or £2.
Over the next few months something
started to click in my head that this was
easy money and the bets slowly started
to increase from £2 to £5 per bet and also
gambling every day in addition to having
extended lunch breaks and skiving parts
of the afternoon. I then managed to get a
different job which was well paid and then
the my life and gambling started to become unmanageable as I was well and
truly Addicted. I would skive off work to go to racing events at Cheltenham or go
to the bookies...I would also go to
the bookies when I should of been
managing a business. Addicts
have to lie to cover their tracks so
loved ones do not know what you
are getting upto. Addiction is very
much about pleasure, pain and
the lie’s that you tell yourself and
others every day it really is like being
on a Hamsters wheel..circle of
addiction with no way out...or so I
thought.
in the direction of a Self Help group
for Gamblers, slowly but surely my
life started to improve as I was given
some new life skills to help stop me
gambling. As the years went by I
relapsed a couple of times but now I
have been clean for a good period of
time, I now work on my recovery and
try to help other compulsive gamblers
do the same. Whatever your
addiction there is always a
way to start again, my future is now
what I make of it :)
If you think you need help or you
know of someone else with a
gambling addiction then for more
information visit :
www.gamblersanonymous.org.uk
I would be telling elborate lies to
my girlfriend of the time or starting
arguments so I could go gambling...
gambling was my life and everything
else had to fit round it. You have
moments of clarity where you realise
you need help and need to stop
but then you end up stealing or
manipulating someone to get money
once your own funds dried up.
After several crisis points in my life I
called Gamcare and they pointed me
The Review
22 23
Unique Food......Bar & Wok
So for our first Unique Food Review of 2015 we choose Bar & Wok 288
High Street in the Cheltenham. The Restaurant itself is lovely decorated
with a funky vibe going on, with a mixture of people celebrating birthdays
or couples on a night out. We ordered ourselves a couple of drinks
and surveyed the Menu...what jumped off the page was Set Menu for
Pak Wai Hung Owner of Bar & Wok
myself and the Mrs(@Dusky210).
When I left the rat race in 2005 and came to Cheltenham to open 288 Bar &
Wok my simple plan was to build a restaurant where I could eat with my wife,
young daughter and friends. That meant no table clothes, no linen, no wine
glasses, no fuss!
What was important was
the food and that the restaurant
was for everyone
young or old. My continued
aim is to serve delicious
and great value food as
quickly as our chefs can
cook it. I hope that there’s
something for everybody’s
taste and wallet.
I provide the food and
drink but it’s our guests
who create the bustling and lively atmosphere. Everyone sits together at
long tables and benches, so you may end up making friends at the end of the
evening, which is very cool by me.
After a slight wait but not too long
our drinks were ready and we
looked forward to our meals, we
cast our eyes over other customers
food coming out and we were impressed.
Then after only 7/8 minutes
out came the food and wow
what a treat we had a mixture of
both Chicken, Beef, Rice, Noodles absolutely lovely.
Both the chicken and beef were very tender and the rice and vegetables
were cooked to perfection
Conclusions
Lovely surroundings and buzzy atmosphere
We both agreed that it was the best meals we had in Cheltenham
Really Impressive Restaurant and will be back again :)
Productions at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham
Presented by Bill Kenwright By Reginald Rose Directed by Christopher Haydon
Following its record breaking West End run this powerful
new production of Twelve Angry Men brings to the stage the
taut brilliance of the 1957 three-time Academy Award nominated
film which as produced by and starred Henry Fonda,
and is considered to be one of the great ‘must-see’ movies of
all time. A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their
hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused
of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut
case soon becomes a huge dilemma as prejudices and preconceived
ideas about the accused, the trial and each other
turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax...
Unique Football The Robins
@CTFCofficial
This is how the the following games look like for The Robins:
What a horror story, here we are on 23rd February in 21st place with Cheltenham
no wins in eight games. Cheltenham almost managed a win away at Accrington
for Russell Milton and Steve Elliott. Substitute Shay McCartan's second-half strike
for Accrington denied visitors Cheltenham a first win in eight games. Russell Milton's
side took the lead via a short corner when Wes Burns looped a header into
the centre of the net, over on-rushing goalkeeper Scott Davies. McCartan, who
replaced Seamus Conneely, levelled for Accrington after a swift counter-attack on
the hour mark. Stanley had chances to win the game but Josh Windass fired wide
and was later denied by goalkeeper Trevor Carson. Cheltenham, who announced
on Monday that caretaker boss Milton and his assistant Steve Elliot will take
charge until May following the departure of Paul Buckle, remain in the bottom two
but are now level on points with 22nd-placed Tranmere, who host Shrewsbury on
Saturday. Cheltenham Town boss Russell Milton told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I'm disappointed, but proud for going ahead and they scored after our best spell
in the second half. "Overall I'm really pleased with the boys, the effort and desire
was first class, it's 100% better than it was a couple of weeks ago. "It's a step in the
right direction, we've stopped the rot, we go on from here - simple as that - and
we will."
The next six fixtures will decide if The Robins can get out of the current desperate
state, with Carlisle in 21st place a key game to start with. Then Mansfield in 19th
place and Newport away who are in the lofty heights of eightieth place, Portsmouth
in 14th place and Exeter in 13th place are must win games.
Time for Cheltenham team to show some feel fighting spirit as we can still get out
of this situation, we can do it !!
