The Mortal Wound 5<br />

bursts upon us, and de<strong>at</strong>h anxiety once again erupts<br />

with gre<strong>at</strong> force. As we reach <strong>the</strong> crest of life and look<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h before us, we apprehend th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h no<br />

longer ascends but slopes downward toward decline<br />

and diminishment. From th<strong>at</strong> point on, concerns about<br />

de<strong>at</strong>h are never far from mind.<br />

It’s not easy to live every moment wholly aware of<br />

de<strong>at</strong>h. It’s like trying to stare <strong>the</strong> <strong>sun</strong> in <strong>the</strong> face: you<br />

can stand only so much of it. Because we cannot live<br />

frozen in fear, we gener<strong>at</strong>e methods to soften de<strong>at</strong>h’s<br />

terror. We project ourselves into <strong>the</strong> future through our<br />

children; we grow rich, famous, ever larger; we develop<br />

compulsive protective rituals; or we embrace an impregnable<br />

belief in an ultim<strong>at</strong>e rescuer.<br />

Some people—supremely confident in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

immunity—live heroically, often without regard for<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs or for <strong>the</strong>ir own safety. Still o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>at</strong>tempt to<br />

transcend <strong>the</strong> painful separ<strong>at</strong>eness of de<strong>at</strong>h by way<br />

of merger—with a loved one, a cause, a community,<br />

a Divine Being. De<strong>at</strong>h anxiety is <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r of all religions,<br />

which, in one way or ano<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>at</strong>tempt to temper<br />

<strong>the</strong> anguish of our finitude. God, as formul<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

transculturally, not only softens <strong>the</strong> pain of mortality<br />

through some vision of everlasting life but also palli<strong>at</strong>es<br />

fearful isol<strong>at</strong>ion by offering an eternal presence, and<br />

provides a clear blueprint for living a meaningful life.<br />

But despite <strong>the</strong> staunchest, most venerable defenses,<br />

we can never completely subdue de<strong>at</strong>h anxiety: it is
