Hello and welcome! 

You lucky, lucky people. You are about to become 

part of the biggest youth festival of its kind in the UK. This 

year’s festival is going to be bigger, better and more fun than 

ever before. 

Over the next few weeks we have events and activities for you across Leeds. 

From Monday 16th to Friday 20th June we have a selection of workshops in 

schools. 

As always, we have invited international guests and these students will be joining us 

between Sunday 22nd and Saturday 28th June from as far a field as Durban, Namibia 

and Pakistan. 

And from Monday 30th June – Friday 4th July, Roundhay High School Technology College will be 

broadcasting across Leeds with our radio station Reach Radio. 

BIYF will also be celebrating the first national Shine festival celebrating 

achievements of students across Leeds.

From local dialects to fashion, the places you 

like to hang out or the music you listen to, 

your lives are shaped by the cultures, places 

and people in your home town as much as 

what’s going on in the rest of the country. 

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you 

to explore and express what is special to you 

and discuss where you come from, who you 

are, and what it means for your future. 

Breeze International Youth Festival will be 

representing Leeds along with 17 other 

cities to ask young people what their views 

about their heritage and their town are. 

The project will culminate in a 

spectacular festival in December at St 

Georges Hall, in Liverpool, where young 

people from each city will come together 

to showcase their work. 

We want YOU to be a part of Portrait of a Nation 

Portrait of a Nation - A Picture of Leeds! 

Who are you? Where do you live? 

A celebration of young people in Leeds! 

We want to know about you! We would 

like you to take a picture of yourself in a 

place that feels special to you; that you 

feel at home in. It might be your 

garden, at school or even your local 

skate park – anything that you think 

best represents YOU. 

Send it in to us before the festival and 

during the festival, and we will use all 

the images to create a huge piece of 

picture mosaic artwork, which we will 

display on the big screen later in the 

“What makes Leeds different and special? What is it about 

Leeds that you value? What do different town and cities 

‘Portrait of a Nation’ is a year-long 

project that forms part of the 

celebrations during Liverpool’s year-long 

reign as the European City of Culture 

2008. It is being funded by the Heritage 

Lottery Fund.

‘YouChoose’ Film Screening hosted by Mediafish 

To celebrate the release of a number of big superhero sequels (The 

Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II: The Golden Army), 

Mediafish is screening a classic modern hero film. In the first 

YouChoose event, you can vote for the film you would like to see, from 

either Batman Begins, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or Hulk.

Breeze International Youth Festival has 

teamed up with Roundhay School 

Technology College to present a week 

of radio broadcasts by the young 

people of Leeds. Run by students and 

staff at the school, the broadcasts will 

feature ‘Breeze Bites’, with coverage of 

this year’s festival events, news and 

special guests. 

The budding media stars of tomorrow 

who are taking part in the project have 

been developing their skills alongside 

professionals, broadcasting mentors 

and ambassadors. Tune in and hear 

them produce, present and broadcast 

their own week of radio.
