my wife knows not really
to be threatened. Because
there’snorealchancethat
in real life they’d ever
go for someone like me.
(chuckles.)
Newsday: Nawww. . .
Duplass: So it’s fine on
that front. And it’s not like
therearefourorfivelovemakingscenesyouhaveto
contend with. If we were
making “Nymphomaniac I”
and“II”withOliviaWilde,
itmightbedifferent.
Newsday: Well, maybe
you and your brother should
make those films.
Duplass: Yeah, totally.
You know, Olivia’s not only
fantasticinthis,she’san
incredibly smart and interesting
person, much more so
than she needs to be based
onhowgood-lookingsheis.
Hermotheristhisworldfamous
renegade reporter,
so Olivia’s been raised by
people who are very consciousoftheworld.Soitwas
fun—weconnectedonalot
Newsday: Did the story
line here spur any intense
or serious conversations
on set about ... whether or
notthere’saheavenorhell?
Orifweshouldtrytobring
people back from the dead?
Duplass: No. One thing
interesting that happens
on film sets, in my experience, isthatifthematerial
you’reworkingonisheavier
or intense, the off-set conversations
become all the
more loose and light and
funny.Onthesetof“Dumb
andDumberTo,”you’dfind
more existential conversations
happening, to counterbalance
that material. On
the set of “Lazarus,” you’d
find us, uh ... farting around
and telling jokes.
Newsday: How was it
to memorize the scientific
jargon?
Duplass: Alotoftimes,
actors get overly serious
talking about science, like
whenever you say anything
with four syllables — they
getallformaland“scientific.”Ouraimwastoremain
really normal — we’re normalpeoplegoingthrough
something extraordinary.
All the doctors I know,
when talking about serious
things, seem ... themselves,
like they do when they talk
about football.
Newsday: Many congrats,
by the way, about
“Togetherness,” on HBO.
It’s just been renewed for a
second season.
Duplass: Yeah.Veryexcited.
Newsday: What’s it been
like,goingfromfilmtoTV
work?
Duplass: The initial
challenge was just getting
educatedandgoodatthe
longer form of storytelling.
JayandIneededabitofa
learning curve on that.
Newsday: What did you
do?
Duplass: We’ve watched
alotofTV.Andeventhough
Jay and I write every episode, wehaveawriterscollaborative, fourorfivevery
experienced people who
read our scripts and give us
notes. I think a lot of artists
areeitherthreatenedbythat
or miss out on it. They worry
their vision will be diluted.Butwe’reveryawareof
our own limitations. So we
don’t have a problem with
that.
Newsday: It’s tough at
anyage,butwhyarethe
characters on “Togetherness”
finding their 30s so
challenging?
Duplass: Ican’tspeak
foreveryonewho’s30.But
whatIwillsay...isthatit
yourself and the things
people do really well. But
if you’re trying to be a good
spouse,agoodfriend,parent,child,agoodmember
of your community, and
stilltakecareofyourself
and your own personal
impossible task, in my
opinion.That’stheworld
