EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the West Sound
From the Editor
David Nelson
Kitsap Sun
USA TODAY NETWORK
It’s time again to showcase our community
as only the West Sound Guide
has done for more than 30 years. Inside
you’ll find information that should
make navigating the Kitsap Peninsula
(and slightly beyond) easier and more
fun for any visitor — and hopefully even
inspire long-time residents to get out
and explore the wealth of treasures our
area provides.
One way we’re expanding the viewpoint
on our culture this spring is by enlisting
the help of an outside observer.
For years Kitsap Sun staff have contributed
to this guide with their picks and
tips of the best or most interesting activities
and places to visit. This year I’ve
called on our friends at Kitsap Culture,
which uses its website and social media
to point toward both points of interest,
both well known and off-beat. We’re
using photos from @kitsapculture’s Instagram
account, bringing you some
ideas for the coming year from a different
perspective. Enjoy what we’ve selected
for this edition, and be sure to
find them and follow along on Facebook,
Instagram and Twitter.
It’s always my pleasure to compile
the West Sound Guide as a preface to
the coming seasons. Festival photos,
sunsets and more have me ready to
start the exploration of events new and
traditional. I hope you feel the same —
now here’s your motivation to go make
it a great year in West Sound.
WEST SOUND SUMMER
Focused on the family
Summer’s coming, and you need some ideas. As a new part of our overview
of everything going on in the West Sound, we’re giving families a
head start in this year’s guide. Fortunately for you, the Sun newsroom
has several parents who were happy to suggest their top picks for places
to play. Here’s our recommendations for the playgrounds not to miss
this year, and on the next page find the area’s top children’s museums for
the days when the indoors beckon.
Airport Children’s Playground at Bremerton National Airport.
Owen’s Playground on Bainbridge Island. PHOTOS BY LARRY STEAGALL/KITSAP SUN FILE
Airport Children’s Playground
Bremerton National Airport, 8850 SW Highway 3
(between Bremerton and Belfair)
What’s there: Airport-themed climbing structure, slides, airplane-themed
play toys, rubberized surface
Why you should go: Located just off the Bremerton National Airport runways,
not only can your kids play like pilots, the whole family can watch takeoffs
and landings. And the next-door Airport Diner is known to serve some of
the best fish and chips in town.
Owen’s Playground at Rotary Park
969 Weaver Rd NW, Bainbridge Island
What’s there: A 13,000-square-foot facility built just a few years ago as part of a
community effort to honor a six-year-old resident, Owen, who died from complications
of cerebal palsy. The playground was built with children of different abilities
in mind, with equipment that is open and accessible, as well as water features,
sand, chalk surfaces and an emphasis on color and art to entertain.
Why you should go: The playground was built with the idea that any kid will be
able to enjoy what’s there, so your family can be assured there’s something for everyone.
WEST SOUND SUMMER
Evergreen-Rotary Park has a renovated play area. LARRY STEAGALL/KITSAP SUN
Silverdale Waterfront Park has a large net structure. MEEGAN M. REID/KITSAP SUN
Evergreen-Rotary Park
1500 Park Ave., Bremerton
What’s there: A completely renovated play area with accessible climbing structures
that may be used by smaller kids or children with different abilities safely,
slides, swings and rubberized surfaces, surrounded by patio space, bathrooms,
ballfields and basketball/volleyball courts on a 10-acre plot.
Why you should go: This is the place to play for city residents, and the playground
gets busy quickly when the weather warms. Frankly, the grassy areas also
tend to fill up with family barbecues or picnics. The beauty is the diversity of activities,
however — not just the park, boat launch and waterfront, but nearby C.J.’s
Evergreen Store as a stop for ice cream, a farmer’s market every Thursday and the
Kitsap 9/11 memorial on the park’s renovated south end.
Silverdale Waterfront Park
3337 NW Byron St, Silverdale
What’s there: A massive net structure centers this park on the Dyes Inlet
shoreline, a unique attraction which will appeal to older children — but nearby
structures with ladders and slides are a little lower to the ground and ready for
the younger kids. The playground is only part of the draw, with a long stretch of
beach just steps away for afternoon exploring. The pier off the parking lot is also
fun for kids, who can scramble out and watch the sailboats come and go.
Why you should go: It’s Silverdale’s central park all summer and hosts families
or groups with a large gazebo, panoramic view of Dyes Inlet and the walkable
neighborhood of Old Town.
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
There’s no shortage of things to do, see in Bremerton
The brawny city with a shipyard centers around a
developing downtown and its ferry connection to Seattle,
but diverse neighborhoods, pocket parks and accessible
shoreline give Bremerton its true character.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Base Kitsap and
a ferry terminal to Seattle have always anchored
downtown, where condos line one waterfront, the
Norm Dicks Government Center looms over it all and
new apartments offer a place for urban living. A number
of businesses have sprung up on the streets surrounding
Pacific Avenue in recent years, from arcades
to salons to craft breweries, and the Louis Mentor
Boardwalk remains the hub for community festivals. A
stretch of Fourth Street just off Pacific is the latest sign
of rebirth, where the Historic Roxy Theater reopened
in early 2018 and shows art house films each week, and
more apartments are under construction ongoing to
create a district that will be known as Quincy Jones
Square. That project will enhance the cultural scene —
Admiral Theatre, Collective Visions Gallery and SEE
Film cinemas, to name a few — to keep bringing nightlife
to the district.
Less than a mile north of downtown, Evergreen Rotary
Park is a jewel with new lawns and paths surrounding
the city’s 9/11 memorial, an accessible playground
that's a hit for all ages of kids, and a rebuilt boat
launch. Across Port Washington Narrows you’ll find
Lions Park, also with a restored shoreline that allows
pristine beach access and ballfields that are hopping
most nights of the week, and the gazebo at Bachmann
Park in Manette is another picturesque place to watch
ferries or Navy vessels come in and out of Sinclair Inlet.
Neighborhoods like Anderson Cove and Union Hill
have new parks thanks to city efforts, and the former
Eastpark (near the YMCA) and Westpark (off Kitsap
Way near Highway 3) areas are seeing families and
seniors relocate in new residential developments.
Sheridan Park, on the east side, got a major makeover
with new streets and sidewalks leading from the Har-
See BREMERTON, Page 13
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
Be seen down on the boardwalk during the summer
Downtown Bremerton’s summer hub may just be
the Louis P. Mentor Boardwalk, the centerpiece of the
city’s renovation efforts several years ago and still one
of the most visible places in the county. (120 Washington
Avenue, downtown Bremerton)
The boardwalk’s proximity to ferry terminals
means inbound visitors from Seattle are introduced to
its marina right away, in addition to commuters on the
Port Orchard foot ferry or Rich Passage I and the boat
owners who cruise out to Sinclair Inlet. The boardwalk
is also home to one of the area’s icons — the USS Turner
Joy and its museum — along with a picnic area and
the Harborside plaza’s fountains and restaurants.
But the summer is when the boardwalk — named
for a former mayor — comes alive. In addition to the
typical traffic, there’s a festival of one kind or another
consistently from May through September. If there’s a
place to be seen, more and more often it’s the boardwalk.
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
Residents take pride in Bremerton’s park revival
In a city of neighborhoods — Union
Hill, Forest Ridge, West Hills, Sheridan
Park or Manette, to name a few — the
importance of a neighborhood park
shouldn’t be underestimated.
That’s why Bremerton residents are
understandably proud of city efforts —
most of which included a large amount
of resident participation through work
parties and fundraisers — to renovate
many of the green spaces in recent
years.
The monumental efforts to overhaul
Evergreen-Rotary Park (page 8) may
have been the largest lift, but other
parks have benefitted from an ambitious
city agenda and expert improvement
work over the past decade.
Anderson Cove’s waterfront pocket
park, the playgrounds and ballfields at
Kiwanis Park, and the major overhaul of
the shoreline and softball fields at Lions
Park are just a few of the most notable
projects in recent years.
That’s not even mentioning Blueberry
Park, less of a “park” in the traditional
sense but a wonderful p-patch and open
space that its neighborhood in East
Bremerton cares for closely, or the
downtown Harborside fountains —
there’s no grass in sight but that doesn’t
kids of all ages from frolicking in summer
weather near the ferry terminal.
Neighbors in Manette are the latest
group now expecting an improved place
to gather and play.
Construction work has begun on a $1
million effort to transform the playfield
and playground on 13th Street and Nipsic,
also home of the city’s popular senior
center.
To add some context to the city’s embrace
of park space, Bremerton is home
to 27 individual parks, plenty for you to
spend the next few months becoming
more acquainted with.
Runners cross the Manette Bridge. MEEGAN M. REID
Walk bridge-to-bridge
with the Sun June 23
If you’ve lived in Bremerton awhile,
chances are you’ve hiked “the bridges,”
a three-mile loop encompassing Bremerton’s
two spans over the Port Washington
Narrows.
While cars might’ve been the rationale
for construction of the Manette
Bridge (originally built 1930 and replaced
in 2011) and the Warren Avenue
Bridge (built in 1958), the crossings also
created a three-mile loop that many locals
use for everything from a morning
stroll to an impromptu 5k.
This year brings some added nostalgia,
as Manette marks its centennial of
joining the city of Bremerton.
To help celebrate, Kitsap Sun reporter
Josh Farley has developed a free
bridge-to-bridge trail guide that will be
unveiled at the Sun’s latest Story Walk
June 23.
The walks, to begin at the park at
8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.,
are free to attend and will uncover mysteries
and curiosities along the entire
three-mile loop.
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
Silverdale strives to balance work, retail, recreation
Major expansion at Harrison Medical
Center and new retail additions are reshaping
the commercial hub of Kitsap
County. Silverdale is now embarking on
efforts to balance its growing business
population with recreation, transportation
and other quality-of-life amenities.
The Haselwood YMCA has become a
community gathering place over just a
few years of existence along Silverdale
Way, and The Trails shopping center
and Harrison Medical Center’s campus
are the latest major projects to bring
people and jobs to Silverdale. Complimenting
the commercial growth are residential
housing developments north of
Waaga Way, enhancements along the
Clear Creek trail and major transportation
corridor improvements on Silverdale
Way and Ridgetop Boulevard. Congestion
during 2018 is assured, but the
Fall foliage reflects off the water of Dyes Inlet as seen from Silverdale
Waterfront Park. LARRY STEAGALL/KITSAP SUN
benefits of improved roadways should
pay off as Silverdale continues to expand.
The growth doesn’t stop with retail
and commericial these days. Renovations
at the community’s three high
schools — Central Kitsap, Olympic and
Klahowya — will bring a community
benefit with new meeting places and
athletic fields in the year to come.
Kitsap Regional Library is raising
money for new branch to be located just
off Bucklin Hill Road along Clear Creek,
and Central Stage Theatre is also in the
process of building a community playhouse
on Ridgetop. The Clear Creek
Trail now extends past Waaga Way on
both sides of Silverdale Way, after a major
expansion project to add connections
to neighborhoods for the community’s
most trafficked pedestrian path.
The forest canopy offers views you may
not expect near such dense retail, but
restored marsh areas and ponds harken
back to Silverdale’s days as a one-light
town surrounded by farms.
That idea of “Old Silverdale” does
still exists amid the growth, mainly in a
small business district along the shore
of Dyes Inlet. Old Town has seen its own
little building boom, with renovation
projects, and this summer a farmers
market nearby will offer another reason
to hang out and enjoy the breeze along
the shores of Dyes Inlet.
Silverdale shopping takes another step forward
Silverdale’s long had a reputation as the county’s
retail hub, rivaled only on the peninsula by the shopping
centers of Gig Harbor.
That reputation for commercial buzz was boosted
considerably in recent years with the addition of The
Trails at Silverdale, a walkable mall complex with
fast casual restaurants, burgers and cafes, clothing,
home decor, liquor and more on its 30 acres.
The Trails is just north of the Kitsap Mall, across
Waaga Way, in land opened up in the past decade by
the construction of Greaves Way connection and a
reconfigured highway.
The growth as a shopping destination doesn’t
mean the mall or surrounding clusters along Silverdale
Way have given up.
Kitsap Mall’s recent reinvention follows a national
trend, with a smaller emphasis on big box retailers
and more focus on dining or experiences, seen with
the additions of stops like Buffalo Wild Wings, Monteczuma’s
Mexican Restaurant and World of Beer.
pancake breakfast, as is City Hall, where civic engagement
is based and Poulsbo’s history can also be
found at a museum on site.
Outside of downtown the business gravitates to the
Highway 305 corridor, with grocery options, restaurants
and retail to commuters headed toward Bainbridge
Island or folks coming from the city’s dense residential
neighborhoods just north. Head east on 305
and you’ll find the Olhava hill commercial development,
where big-box retailers draw shoppers and a
branch of Olympic College and Western Washington
University share a site.
Craft breweries are among the city’s boasts, with
five in Poulsbo’s boundaries, and local ice cream, coffee
and fish may also be found.
Fish Park is a nugget of serene beauty among the
bustle, with 40 acres along Dogfish Creek tucked away
off Finn Hill Road and waiting for you to watch salmon
spawn, birds chirp or simply the tide come in. Other
city parks — from Raab Park’s baseball diamonds to
the boardwalk along Liberty Bay or more passive site
with open space — continue to be a source of pride, no
matter what a Poulsbo resident’s genealogy may be.
Poulsbo established itself as the
dominant landscape for local brewers as
the cultural phenomenon in Kitsap took
off a decade ago — and the momentum
has only gained steam.
Undoubtedly near the top of any list
of most breweries per capital in the
country, Poulsbo’s additional craft
breweries have created a scene that locals
and even regional tourists don’t
miss.
From the pioneering experiment at
Hood Canal Brewery to the most recent
addition, Western Red Cedar, the city is
a mecca for beer lovers.
Sound Brewery has been one of the
most notable, and expanded operations
— and added a food menu — with a
move from the original home off Viking
Avenue to the former Campagna’s restaurant
down the street.
Slippery Pig originated on a farm off
Finn Hill but now has a prime spot off
Front Street, where regular events like
quiz nights or beer church add to its
eclectic feel. Valholl Brewing, near City
Hall on Third Avenue, retains a tightknit
community in its comfy quarters,
and a newcome from Central Kitsap,
Rainy Daze, keeps winning awards with
the brews it creates in the old Sound
headquarters.
Wester Red Cedar is an ambitious
Hidden history
just down the
road in Scandia
Heading north on Highway 308 as it
becomes Viking Way, off to the right
you will drop down a relatively steep
hill into a little valley.
Some of the scattered homes there
are surrounded by tilled fields.
The area presents a strong pastoral
image, invoking visions of the productive
small farms which once dominated
the valley. This is Scandia, another of
those many Kitsap County place names
marking what once were thriving but
isolated settlements.
It may be part of Poulsbo based on
the address and the view of Liberty Bay,
but Scandia can also feel like a throwback
to a different time and place.
If you’re not a resident of this quaint
hub there aren’t many chances to do
more than a lazy Sunday drive or bike
ride down the Scandia Lane loop.
The Scandia Patch is a small farm
that does pumpkins and produce in autumn,
lambs to look at in the pastures,
and a little church should you want to
attend a Sunday service.
The heart of Kingston is just south of
Green community center is a popular
community space just blocks from
Mike Wallace Park and the row of shops
Kingston, it also offers a picturesque
view of Appletree Cove.
The sleepy waterfront community is
a connection across Puget Sound for
commuters and visitors, with the existing
connection to Edmonds and an anticipated
fast ferry service right into
downtown Seattle, coming from Kitsap
who arrives or departs visits the route
lined with quaint cafes, a movie theater,
restaurants like the legendary Grub Hut,
a brewery and new coffee house that
on the Kingston marina and Mike Wallace
Scenery, history makes Port Gamble special
The company town built by logging
and mills on Kitsap Peninsula’s northern
tip is now a tourist’s port of call,
where visitors wander the quaint
streets of Victorian homes — some of
which can be rented — and shops to
catch a glimpse of the past or just gaze
out on the scenery.
Some of the past is making way for
the future, and by visiting now you can
observer a major ecological restoration
— including removal of the old mill site
— going on in Port Gamble Bay.
There’s activity all summer here too
— trail runs and mountain biking in
7,000 acres of the adjacent forest and
Port Gamble Heritage Park open for
public use, a weekly car cruise and
farmers market, ghost tours of the historic
buildings, great eats at the renovated
Port Gamble Cafe or a show at a
community theater house.
Weddings may now be the largest
calling card, with a spectacular venue
available overlooking the Strait of Juan
de Fuca, an historic church nearby for
ceremonies and events nearly every
weekend.
The bay clean up and a timber harvest
project in the longtime Pope Resources
forest just south of town are a
significant development in the community's
history.
Cleaning up the mill site and bay is
uncovering beaches that have long been
unusable, and the logging operations
are a once-in-a-generation chance to
reforest the land for public use and pave
the way for future residential growth on
the town site.
Port Gamble offers visitors a fun
glimpse of its past, but it's important to
have an eye on the future when you visit.
There’s also activity near the residential heart of
An old Mosquito Fleet dock stands out nearly 800
A country store nearing its century mark is part of
other types of berries — the first weekend of July at the
The city by the bay remains defined largely by its
attractive waterfront, with a busy marina, park and
gazebo, and a new waterfront pathway that is extending
east along Beach Drive for runners, bicyclists and
walkers to appreciate Sinclair Inlet’s extensive shoreline.
A bustling farmers market operates downtown
spring through fall, and summer festivals — the campy
Seagull Calling Festival, boaters at the Chris Craft Rendevous,
and activities for everyone during Fathoms of
Fun — keep things lively.
Bay Street’s four-block main drag boasts restaurants
and cafés, a brewery, nail and hair salons, gift
shops and boutiques, not to mention a historic restored
movie theater, the Dragonfly. The city's marina,
operated by the Port of Bremerton, is a popular destination
and stays fully occupied by boaters nearly yearround,
and a quaint foot ferry buzzes quick trips to
Bremerton and back all day long. Being home to the
county administrative building and courthouse means
constant movement from employees and visitors up
and down Bay Street.
Port Orchard stretches inland as well, and booming
neighborhoods now constitute the city’s future.
Growth has been anchored by the McCormick Woods
residential community and stellar golf course, now
surrounded by new homes, with residential development
now stretching nearly to the community's other
noteworthy links, at Trophy Lake Golf and Casting
Club. East of Highway 16 are other projects rapidly
making South Kitsap a bustling area, but one that
holds on to an agricultural legacy through small family
farms, pumpkin patches and pasture lands that dot
the areas approaching Southworth and Olalla.
A major draw for residents year-round, but especially
during warmer months, is South Kitsap Regional
Park, a 209-acre area with ballfields, trails, a dog park,
picnic shelters and even a live railroad. The park is truly
a community institution, with the railroad operated
by a nonprofit, batting cages run by a local company,
and a skate park that was designed and built thanks to
hours of involvement from volunteer groups.

the South Kitsap High School team
hosting the event.
The larger crowds show up
through June and July, with more traditional
events like a 5k run, car show,
boat races, a scholarship pageant, an
arts festival, a parade down Bay
Street and the centerpiece of the
summer, a Fourth of July display over
Sinclair Inlet.
Fathoms also gets into a weekly
groove around that time, with outdoor
concerts held at Marina Park every
Thursday evening at 6:30.
The goofy fun doesn’t end, however
— it washes back onshore later in
the summer, during August’s pirate
rendezvous (yep, folks dressing up in
hats and wigs again...). Come down to
Marina Park the weekend of August
19 and 20 to get your “arrrrrrrgh” on.
After an autumn break, Fathoms of
Fun comes back for the holidays,
hosting a Breakfast with Santa the
Saturday after Thanksgiving every
year.
Fathoms is actually a formal nonprofit
organization, with a history
dating back decades and through
hundreds and hundreds of volunteers.
Its sole mission is to provide fun
and community in Port Orchard, and
its been succeeding for a long, long
time. Schedules and more at
34 ❚ MAY 2018 ❚ KITSAP SUN WEST SOUND GUIDE
The highway hub between Port Orchard and Bremerton
may have developed a less-than-stellar reputation
for traffic back-ups and racy coffee stands, but it’s
still a part of the West Sound experience — even if
many visitors blink and miss it.
Highways 3 and 16 converge in Gorst, at the end of
Sinclair Inlet, creating the bottleneck during the commute
and a line of roadside industrial and commercial
buildings. Just behind that bustle there’s beauty, however,
with an expansive shoreline that really comes
alive when the tide is out.
The bay east of the highway has been restored in the
past decade to improve the wildlife habitat, and its
now a great spot to spot birds. Salmon migrate this
way, ending up in the spawning grounds of Gorst
Creek, which draws people to Jarstand Park on West
Belfair Valley Road to watch salmon or participate in
the Poggie Club’s annual fishing day, one of the community’s
highlights.
There’s also culture here, with Elandan Gardens
and its commanding view of the inlet on the west side,
and the Kitsap Square Dancing Association’s facility
along West Belfair Valley, a lively place to be every
week. And just to the west you’ll find Gold Mountain
Golf Course, one of the premier courses in Western
Washington and a beautiful backdrop for weddings,
events and more.

Manchester
a little place
with big view
It’s a little community with a big view, with an expanse
across Puget Sound toward downtown Seattle
and encompassing Blake Island, Vashon and Southworth.
Manchester is a cozy South Kitsap residential
neighborhood, marked by homes up the hill watching
over the small business district. There is a main drag
that’s home to a few businesses, along with a restaurant
and pub, a branch of Kitsap Regional Library and
a public pier. Manchester’s residents play an active
role in keeping things interesting, sponsoring annual
activities like a Christmas visit from Santa and the
well known Father’s Day salmon bake, and other
gatherings at Pomeroy Park.
It’s also home to the Navy’s Manchester Fuel Depot,
which hosts large tankers or carriers on their way
to and from Bremerton’s shipyard, and a research
station. Nearby Manchester State Park is a highlight,
with grounds for camping, hiking, picnics and shoreline
activities.
NATHAN PILLING /
KITSAP SUN
Let’s say it’s May, and the sun is out and the Scotch
broom is blooming...
Yes, you read that right.
Pay attention to the Scotch broom on Bainbridge,
because when it blooms it means the area’s most popular
impromptu, unscheduled, random and unique
parade may strike at any moment. And you may be
named the guest of honor.
The island’s Kiwanis Club stirs the Scotch broom
Parade, a local treasure that pops up out of nowhere on
Winslow Way once a year, choosing a passer-by at random
for a quick ride up and down the block on whatever
convertible vehicle is around to lead the way.
It’s been going on for 60 years, give or take a few,
created by an island architect who, the story goes, was
a little bored.
Spectators get roped in as well with Scotch-broom
bouquets and it’s a fun 15 minutes for everyone involved.
The only indicator the parade is coming is that the
golden weed can be seen — since the entire event is
more or less a way to lampoon the invasive species and
raise some awareness (it does, in fact, need to be eradicated
and several island groups work hard at doing so).
So keep your eyes open on Winslow Way this
month, we’re due for Scotch broom any day...
Bainbridge
The island’s 1,600 acres or of parkland
— preserved as natural areas like
Gazzam Lake Preserve and Grand Forest
Park — showcase forested splendor
near away from public beaches like Hidden
Cove Park and Fort Ward Park. You
can find a combo of Puget Sound’s beauty
on Bainbridge Island, much of it with
a view of Seattle’s skyline.
That skyline is where approximately
half of the island workforce ferries each
day, and those commuters come home
with paychecks that make Bainbridge
one of the most affluent communities in
the state. That means well-funded
schools, renowned cultural organizations,
and a healthy shopping and restaurant
scene.
Winslow is the city hub, home of the
ferry terminal for vessels sailing to
downtown Seattle, marinas and waterfront
public spaces, city hall, Bainbridge
High, iconic Winslow Way's retail district
and a growing number of dense
residential developments. Lynwood
Center has become a population center
with a major mixed-use development,
facing the historic Lynwood Theatre
(movies) and Treehouse Cafe (music)
that create night spots to go along with
the neighborhood's other retail.
It doesn’t just mean financial donations
either, islanders are known as enthusiastic
and engaged volunteers,
whether working together on public
gardening or trail maintenance, supporting
community events like the annual
Fourth of July festivities and Rotary
Belfair
boasts
fishing,
swimming
Belfair’s most recognized asset is likely the end of
Hood Canal’s hook, a natural landscape that comes
alive when the weather warms and draws visitors and
seasonal residents.
The shallow waters in that stretch of saltwater
warm quickly for swimmers and boaters, and local
docks and boat launches like Twanoh State Park, Alderbrook
Resort or North Shore Road draw a line of
fishermen when the shrimp, crab or salmon are in season.
If looking for wildlife on land is more your style, the
Pacific Northwest Salmon Center and Mary Theler
Community Center in Belfair offer a network of trails
and boardwalk to stroll, watching for wildlife or birds.
Belfair’s main drag, Highway 3, has experienced
rapid growth of a business community, and its school
system has completed upgrades to accommodate the
growing population.
A major sewer system project has recently opened
up areas for development, and a pending state highway
project promises to ease traffic congestion as the
unincorporated town continues to attract those looking
for a slower pace.
Exploring along
Hood Canal
Highway 101 is your route through a number of small
West Sound communities that each may be called a
gateway to Olympic Peninsula recreation. Hoodsport,
Brinnon and Quilcene also are in the unique position of
offering access to Hood Canal, making any of them a
good jumping-off point whether you’re looking for hiking,
camping, boating or fishing.
In addition to each of the small communities made
of full-time residents and summer cabin dweller, the
west side of Hood Canal has state parks on the shoreline
as well as with access to the olympic Mountains
and rivers like Hama Hama or Dosewallips. Lake Cushman
is a popular spot for camping or renting a cabin for
a getaway, and on the route to Mount Elinor trail,
which offers an awe-inspiring view into the Olympics.
Each Hood Canal community has a mix of restaurants,
but if you’re searching for local delicacy that you
take with you, stop at an oyster farm for goods right off
the beach. The nearly 100-year-old Hama Hama Co. is
right on Highway 101 at Liliwaup.
A walk through Harmony Hill Retreat Center in
Union may be the most peaceful way to appreciate the
south shore’s scenery. The center is a private facility
that may be reserved for weddings, memorial services,
personal retreats or meetings, but a walking trail is
also open to the public. At that point you’re also near
Alderbrook, one of the region’s premier beachside resorts,
with rental cabins and a lodge, and a golf course
overlooking the canal.
The other attraction that may go unseen — since it’s
underwater — is the availability of great spots for scuba
diving. There are stops all along from Liliwaup to
Union, like Potlatch and Twanoh state parks or Sund
Rock near Hoodsport.
Gig Harbor
has to offer
The little fishing village hot off the
twin Tacoma Narrows Bridges may retain
much more.
West of downtown and across Highway
16 sits the Uptown shopping center,
stacked with popular boutiques, restaurants
and 10-screen Galaxy Theatre, and
host to community events that include
the annual beer fest and more.
To the north, east of Highway 16, hidden
among trees and accessed by
roundabouts, sits more shopping, residential
developments and a community
hub, the YMCA.
Residential growth surrounds Gig
Harbor on all sides, and even in established
areas that undergo renewal,
pushed by the region's hot market and
the quality schools and amenities that
draw new blood.
Downtown the attraction all summer
is to walk the waterfront, detouring to
Jerisch Dock to check out the boats. The
adjacent park is home to a summertime
concert series. Cushman Trail offers
miles of walking or cycling from the
Narrows to North Gig Harbor and has
Blink and you may miss either of
these two small South Kitsap communities,
but both charming settings are inviting
if you take the time to look.
Olalla’s stationed between Gig Harbor
and Port Orchard, in a pastoral area
dotted by barns and historic homes. Al’s
Market is the place everyone must stop,
whether to pick up snacks or check out
the view of Colvos Passage and Vashon
Island. Down on the shore of Olalla Lagoon,
it’s where you’ll find locals on
pleasant days as well as in the middle of
winter — a neighboring bridge hosts the
annual New Year’s Day polar bear
plunge that draws folks from across the
region.
The Olalla Community Club is also a
home away from home for locals, with
events like an annual swap meet or
weekly bingo nights.
The community club also hosts a
concert and writer's series that, perhaps
inevitable in this community, include
potlucks. Check www.olallahouse.org
for a schedule.
Not far down the road is the hamlet of
Southworth, a waterfront community
for around 2,000 residents perched at
the end of a scenic drive that winds
along the South Kitsap shoreline to Port
Orchard. Kayakers bound for Blake Island
and beachcomb-ers are drawn to
the waterfront, where scenic views
abound at every angle.
The Southworth ferry terminal is a
jumping off point for travelers and daily
commuters bound to Vashon Island and
West Seattle, creating a burst of traffic
every hour or so. The tiny but wellstocked
Southworth Store and the longstanding
post office are the hub of the
community. Artists working from home
studios have clustered here, and little
farms like Rodstol find a place among
the peaceful scenes.
Kohlten Dunn, formerly of Olalla and
now a resident of Orting, returned to
make his eighth annual plunge,
executing a flip as he eyes the water
waiting below. RIC HALLOCK
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
Peninsula adventures found just across the bridge
Once envisioned as a potential major
seaport, Port Townsend has settled into
its role of being a quiet and quaint town
on the shores of Admiralty Inlet and an
initial stop for Kitsap County tourists
taking flight on the Olympic Peninsula.
Sequim is the lavendar capital and revels
in a sunny climate thanks to a rain
shadow from its mountain range above,
and Port Angeles is the city of bigger
brawn, with its longtime fishing industry,
entrance to Olympic National Park
and portal to Victoria, Canada via ferry
line. And further exploration west leads
to outposts like Neah Bay, Forks and
outdoorsy stops like Rialto Beach or Klaloch.
Tourists are drawn to Port Townsend’s
historic Water Street all year
long, where the busiest district in town
is lined with boutiques, cafes and
charming theaters and worth a visit.
The annual Wooden Boat Festival is a
high point downtown each autumn, and
other community festivals fill nearby
Fort Worden State Park, like the Port
Townsend Jazz Festival.
Agriculture is a point of pride, with a
bustling co-op, summer farmers markets
and tours of nearby producers like
Finn River Cider.
You’ll reach Port Angeles if you’re
seeking the best views on the Olympic
Peninsula from the top of Hurricane
Ridge, a National Park Service site with
a grade so steep the road is closed most
of the winter. The Elwha River is also an
outdoors site that any trip through PA
shouldn’t miss, with different points to
view the changing ecosystem after the
removal of two major dams. Downtown
Port Angeles sits on the waterfront,
where the ferry across the Straight of
Juan de Fuca and an annual maritime
festival draw visitors, and it’s also an access
point to the beautiful Olympic Discovery
Trail, which stretches east past
Seqium for bicycling or running.
WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
A real stand-up
community
Cultural events are a key part of West
Sound's scene, and one segment that
often flies under the radar is the world of
stand-up comedy.
But the community of comedians is
welcome here, finding a home at small
gigs — special comedy nights at bars
like the Cloverleaf, open mic at local
breweries and, naturally, a Facebook
page (www.facebook.com/ComedyIn
Kitsap).
One of the top draws is a monthly
event at Bainbridge Performing Arts,
when The Edge Improv takes over like it
has been doing for 20 years now.
There are also big events to make you
laugh — the Seattle International Comedy
Competition has fielded events at
Bremerton's Admiral Theatre and Bainbridge
Performing Arts as part of its annual
fall tour and name acts regularly
shows up at the Clearwater or Point casinos.
We are your trusted connection to
Kitsap’s professional builders, remodelers
and related providers.
Visit our website for contractors, financial institutions, cabinet makers,
plumbers, electricians — anything your home or building may need — we have
a member who can assist.
The best way to get
around West Sound
is still on two wheels
The winding shoreline roads and
gentle forested valleys of the Kitsap and
Olympic peninsulas make West Sound
the perfect getaway from the seat of a
motorcycle.
Choppers to sport bikes can be found
on the county’s streets year-round, but
especially when summer days offer
seemingly endless time to cruise. Popular
routes travel the highway and back
roads from Mason County to the Hood
Canal bridge, and down Highway 101
along the canal’s west bank.
Shops like Legend Harley-Davidson
in Silverdale or Rottweiler Bikes in
Bremerton offer a gathering place for
gear-heads as well, and foster a community
of riders.
Off-road riders also have a playground
here, whether exploring public
lands on the Tahuya peninsula (remember
to bring a Discover Pass for parking)
or participating in events like the Bremerton
Cruisers Motorcycle Club near the
Bremerton Motorsports Park.
The newest facility in the region is in
Shelton, at The Ridge Motorsports Park
complex, which includes a road course,
motocross, karting and other fun
events.
Local bikers are also prominent in the
community through sponsorship of several
annual rides to benefit different
groups.
Every Memorial Day weekend the Silverdale
Harley Owners Group honors
veterans with the Fred Ross Memorial
Run to the Washington Veterans Home
at Retsil, and members of the local
ABATE motorcycle club deliver toys and
holiday cheer each December at the annual
Toy Run.
WEST SOUND THINGS TO DO
CHURCHES
No one accuses the Pacific Northwest of being staid
or old fashioned. Even in religious life there are a growing
number of new ideas when it comes to churches in
our region. That includes home-based Christian fellowships,
community churches like NewLife that follow
a franchise-type model with multiple congregations
at different sites, larger churches like Poulsbo’s
Gateway Fellowship that also run schools, or churches
that also operate community centers, like Emmanuel
Apostolic Church. There are also newer non-denominational
gatherings that create sanctuaries by renovating
buildings without a faith history, like Bremerton’s
The Refuge or Seaside.
Traditional congregations through West Sound are
notable as well. Many of the area’s long-standing
churches that have crossed the century mark in years
of service, including Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic
Church, Elim Lutheran in Port Orchard, Tracyton United
Methodist, Silverdale United Methodist, Lincoln
Avenue Bible Church, Our Savior’s Lutheran and St.
Paul’s Episcopal. There are also long-standing public
events where residents may notice our faith community,
from the annual Good Friday Cross Walk through
Port Orchard to a living nativity on Bainbridge Island
every December.
Other denominations are active, with many locations
for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints around the county, Jewish congregations in
Bremerton and on Bainbridge Island, and a Unitarian
community in Bremerton. And most recently an Islamic
Center opened in 2017 for people of the Muslim
faith to worship in Bremerton.
Bonnie Ruehs-Lutz, left, and Ron Boehme gather at
one of the stations of the cross at Saint Gabriel
Catholic Church in Port Orchard on Good Friday.
WEST SOUND GUIDE
Photos that almost made it to the cover
So many good photos, but only one cover. Our annual dilemma in chosing the best image for the West Sound Guide cover — a good problem to have,
motivates you to get out there and enjoy our area. Thanks for reading the West Sound Guide.
