WEST SOUND NEIGHBORHOODS
Scenery, history makes Port Gamble special
The company town built by logging
and mills on Kitsap Peninsula’s northern
tip is now a tourist’s port of call,
where visitors wander the quaint
streets of Victorian homes — some of
which can be rented — and shops to
catch a glimpse of the past or just gaze
out on the scenery.
Some of the past is making way for
the future, and by visiting now you can
observer a major ecological restoration
— including removal of the old mill site
— going on in Port Gamble Bay.
There’s activity all summer here too
— trail runs and mountain biking in
7,000 acres of the adjacent forest and
Port Gamble Heritage Park open for
public use, a weekly car cruise and
farmers market, ghost tours of the historic
buildings, great eats at the renovated
Port Gamble Cafe or a show at a
community theater house.
Weddings may now be the largest
calling card, with a spectacular venue
available overlooking the Strait of Juan
de Fuca, an historic church nearby for
ceremonies and events nearly every
weekend.
The bay clean up and a timber harvest
project in the longtime Pope Resources
forest just south of town are a
significant development in the community's
history.
Cleaning up the mill site and bay is
uncovering beaches that have long been
unusable, and the logging operations
are a once-in-a-generation chance to
reforest the land for public use and pave
the way for future residential growth on
the town site.
Port Gamble offers visitors a fun
glimpse of its past, but it's important to
have an eye on the future when you visit.
