Silverdale strives to balance work, retail, recreation
Major expansion at Harrison Medical
Center and new retail additions are reshaping
the commercial hub of Kitsap
County. Silverdale is now embarking on
efforts to balance its growing business
population with recreation, transportation
and other quality-of-life amenities.
The Haselwood YMCA has become a
community gathering place over just a
few years of existence along Silverdale
Way, and The Trails shopping center
and Harrison Medical Center’s campus
are the latest major projects to bring
people and jobs to Silverdale. Complimenting
the commercial growth are residential
housing developments north of
Waaga Way, enhancements along the
Clear Creek trail and major transportation
corridor improvements on Silverdale
Way and Ridgetop Boulevard. Congestion
during 2018 is assured, but the

benefits of improved roadways should
pay off as Silverdale continues to expand.
The growth doesn’t stop with retail
and commericial these days. Renovations
at the community’s three high
schools — Central Kitsap, Olympic and
Klahowya — will bring a community
benefit with new meeting places and
athletic fields in the year to come.
Kitsap Regional Library is raising
money for new branch to be located just
off Bucklin Hill Road along Clear Creek,
and Central Stage Theatre is also in the
process of building a community playhouse
on Ridgetop. The Clear Creek
Trail now extends past Waaga Way on
both sides of Silverdale Way, after a major
expansion project to add connections
to neighborhoods for the community’s
most trafficked pedestrian path.
The forest canopy offers views you may
not expect near such dense retail, but
restored marsh areas and ponds harken
back to Silverdale’s days as a one-light
town surrounded by farms.
That idea of “Old Silverdale” does
still exists amid the growth, mainly in a
small business district along the shore
of Dyes Inlet. Old Town has seen its own
little building boom, with renovation
projects, and this summer a farmers
market nearby will offer another reason
to hang out and enjoy the breeze along
the shores of Dyes Inlet.
