Alberta keeps status quo
on raw milk sales ban
After investigating the health risks of
consuming raw milk, Alberta Milk,
the organization representing that
province’s dairy farmers, will not be
pursuing further action on the issue.
A resolution passed at the November
2007 annual meeting directed
Alberta Milk staff to investigate risks
and benefits of raw milk consumption,
notes an article in the organization’s
June newsletter.
“This review uncovered numerous
recent scientific articles outlining the
health risks of consuming raw milk
but none validating the anecdotal evidence
supporting its consumption,”
states the article, written by Katherine
Laughlin, market development
manager. “We found no evidence that
would suggest health authorities
should revisit this legislation.”
The article added that producers
should be aware of the penalty for
selling or distributing raw milk in
Alberta. There is a fine of up to
$25,000, plus the possible suspension
of the producer’s licence.
Tribunal rules
on appeal
The Ontario Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal has
granted an appeal by William, John
and Betty Denby, Keith and Ron
Jarvis, and Dale McFeeters, referred
to as the Denby Group, regarding a
challenge of the application of the
transfer assessment on quota sold.
All the farms involved sold their
quota in early 2007, and none currently
operates a dairy farm, the tribunal
noted in its written decision.
The quota sales took place after
DFO implemented the transfer assessment
as part of quota policy changes
implemented in November 2006.
At press time late June, the DFO
board was reviewing the decision and
considering its options.
