They strive to be among Ontario’s top 30 of CanWest DHI herds for production per cow. They also strive for producing high-quality milk, and have a Gold Seal Certificate to prove it. “We’re Haasen Farms is the only dairy operation left in Timmins. That means they can’t hire custom operators since there are none in the area. always trying to do a little better,” Frank says. Farming where they do, the Haasens face challenges more southerly operations never have to consider. The local dairy is long gone, as are all the dairy farms that once supplied it, except Haasen Farms. It’s the only dairy farm left in the City of Timmins, and their nearest dairy farming neighbour is now 60 km away. That means, for instance, they can’t hire custom operators to spread manure, or plant or harvest grain. There are none in the area. Their herd veterinarian has to travel 200 km from New Liskeard, Frank notes. On the plus side, they’re just a 15- minute drive from town and the dealers who sell and service mining equipment. These dealers can also service much of the Haasens’ farm equipment. “A tractor is a tractor whether it’s used in a mine or on a farm,” he says. When it comes to dividing up duties on the farm, no one has a defined job. “We work as a team. What needs doing just gets done,” Frank says. He used the team analogy in his acceptance speech last year when Haasen Farms was named Company of the Year in the one to 15 employees category of the Northern Ontario Business Association awards. “We were thrilled,” he says of the family’s reaction when they learned they had won. “We like what we do, and we’re proud of what we do,” he says.
Ivy and Frank: partners in life and in business. Frank hopes a sense of teamwork and co-operation can carry the Canadian dairy industry forward, too. DFO needs to work with others, whether it’s Quebec, the P5 or the rest of Canada, he says. He counts processors as a key part of the success equation. He senses there is still work ahead to improve the relationship between producers and processors, and believes the industry has to continue in this direction. “If we all work together, supply management works well.
