In addition to the standard fruit and vegetables you see on this chart, Loudoun farmers and farmers markets offer an even broader variety
of produce to pick from. Explore your farmers’ websites and other online sites to find recipes that might appeal to your family.
Business Opportunities in our Local Food Economy
“There are many opportunities to help build our local food system. Think about investing or operating a local business.
Check out these suggestions and talk to us about your idea: sejohnson@pecva.org or jpalmer@pecva.org
1. Work on a farm
2. Help farms find seasonal labors
3. Glean seconds or surplus crops from farm fields
and use to create value-added products
4. Help farms develop their marketing strategies:
product labeling, online presence, etc.
5. Assist farms in recording keeping and accounting
6. Open a local-only store
7. Help create infrastructure to process meat, dairy,
or produce
8. Develop distribution routes and coordinate
product delivery to restaurants and retailers

Quarter Branch Farm
Back to the land
There’s no question about it—Kevin Grove of
Quarter Branch Farm loves his job. Walking
around the Lovettsville farm with Kevin, you
can’t help but feel the tangible excitement and
passion that he has for his work—growing the best
quality greens and vegetables he can for his local
customers.
As he walks down his rows of produce, he’ll
point out the various nutrients associated with
each plant and great ways to eat them. He’ll
show you the three large hoop houses he built—
explaining how they work and how he uses them to
extend the growing season. Kevin will happily talk
about the different ways he grows his seedlings, or
how to build a cold storage facility using a window
AC unit. He’ll eagerly tell you about his successes
and failures, all with a humble smile. Yet, if you had
told Kevin years ago that he would one day run his
own farm? “I would have just laughed,” he says.
That’s because, until a few years ago, Kevin
was a cabinetmaker. He first became interested in
growing his own food due to a health issue, and so
he started a garden. Kevin says that as he read a
number of books about growing food—he knew he
was hooked. “I found myself wanting to get back
to the land,” he explains. “The books got me really
interested in farming as a profession... So I went
for it and haven’t looked back since.”
So, with no farming background, Kevin started
his farm on a quarter acre of his family’s land in
2009. While he says no one should start the way
he did, his expanding farm proves his success.
Kevin is in his 4th growing season, and his quarter
acre has turned into ten acres. He has gone from
paying one full-time employee to four—plus a few
part-time workers. And, in 2011, Kevin’s farm was
chosen for the Forum for Rural Innovation Award.
“I’ve learned a lot,” says Kevin. “It hasn’t
been easy. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and have
a long way to go, but I’m really optimistic about
the farm... This work is a whole lot of fun and is
really rewarding. I really enjoy working with my
employees and with customers. It’s great seeing
the end product go right into the hand of the
person who’s going to eat it. That’s what makes it
all worth it.”
Year Round on Farm. No Growth
Growing grapes and a business sustainably
For Doug Fabbioli of Fabbioli Cellars in
Leesburg, growing his winery and his
vines in a way that is environmentally
and economically sustainable is a center point
of his business philosophy. “Honestly,” he says,
“environmental and economic sustainability really
go hand in hand.”
On the business side, Doug has been careful
to “grow on the gravy [he’s] making rather than
spending millions on a big operation up front.”
He wants his wine to earn its keep, so he has
taken it slow. When Doug and his family came to
Virginia in 1997, he had over a decade of winery
and vineyard work under his belt. The Fabbioli’s
bought their 25-acre plot and planted some
vines. Yet—rather than immediately starting his
own business—Doug got a job as a winemaker
at a vineyard down the road and later worked as
a consultant for multiple vineyards. He waited
patiently until his vines were established, and
then he stepped back from his other work to
focus on making his own wine.
“Again, it’s sustainable growth,” Doug
explains. “You start small, build a customer base,
make a great quality product, and then expand as
you need.” Fabbioli Cellars opened their doors for
tastings in 2007, eventually expanding their hours
from a few days a week to seven.
Doug also knows that to maintain his
business, he has to maintain the natural
resources he depends on. So, he has implemented
environmentally friendly technology and
practices. His fertilizer is compost from his
operation and from neighboring farms, and he
uses an integrated pest management system—
utilizing as much hand labor as possible. “I
want to make smart decisions,” Doug says. “I’d
much rather throw labor at something than a big
gun of chemicals.” He also uses a geothermal
heating and cooling system, an earthen cave for
temperature controlled storage, and is looking
into getting solar panels.
Today, Fabbioli Cellars is producing about
4,000 cases of wine a year with ten acres of vines
in the ground, and all of this careful planning and
growth stems from Doug’s love of winemaking.
“The base is the wine,” he smiles. “The base is the
grapes...We have great artisan craftsmen in the
cellar and the vineyard making the best product
we can from the land.”
Buy Fresh Buy Local: Buy Fresh Buy Local is an
outreach program through which consumers
can find local farms and outlets that
provide fresh, locally-grown products. Our
understanding is that they are providing
consumers fresh, locally-grown products.
As a consumer, ask the seller to tell you how
they define local and the location of the farm
that grows the product. Know your farmer
and their farm! The Loudoun County Buy
Fresh Buy Local’s guide listings are intended
to indicate agricultural products grown or
raised in Loudoun County.
Defining “local”
“Local” is a relative term defined
locally by individual consumers and
the local community. Your best bet
is to ask who the farmer is and
where their farm is located.
How do you define local?
