In addition to the standard fruit and vegetables you see on this chart, Charlottesville-area farmers and farmers markets offer an even broader
variety of produce to pick from. Explore your farmers’ websites and other online sites to find recipes that might appeal to your family.
Business Opportunities in our Local Food Economy
“There are many opportunities to help build our local food system. Think about investing or operating a local business.
Check out these suggestions and talk to us about your idea: sejohnson@pecva.org or jpalmer@pecva.org
1. Work on a farm
2. Help farms find seasonal labors
3. Glean seconds or surplus crops from farm fields
and use to create value-added products
4. Help farms develop their marketing strategies:
product labeling, online presence, etc.
5. Assist farms in recording keeping and accounting
6. Open a local-only store
7. Help create infrastructure to process meat, dairy,
or produce
8. Develop distribution routes and coordinate
product delivery to restaurants and retailers

Thinking
at
Planet Earth
Diversified
by Susanna Byrd
You might think it unlikely that a farmer
as grounded as Michael Clark of Planet
Earth Diversified would get his inspiration
from the spaceship Apollo 13. But if you take a
tour of his farm, you’ll see just how technology
and careful engineering play into every aspect
of its production. As a child, Mike learned how
astronauts recycle every resource within a
spacecraft’s closed environment. This inspired him,
and today he is in charge of a nuanced farming
operation that lets no good thing go to waste.
Planet Earth Diversified has been in operation
since 1975—long before terms like “local food”
and “sustainable agriculture” were common lingo.
Since then, the farm has evolved to include several
acres of seasonal crops and multiple greenhouses
that host a remarkable diversity of life: arugula,
tomatoes, basil, sorrel, micro-greens, and even
citrus trees.
In the winter, Mike heats his greenhouses
with a generator that runs off of used motor
and cooking oil. His greens grow in a hydroponic
system—designed to constantly recycle water
and nutrients. Mike has even shared the farm’s
homemade electricity, water and refrigeration with
his neighbors during power outages. “We would
all be in the dark, hungry and with no water if [the
community] hadn’t supported us,” he explains.
Planet Earth Diversified is evidence
that small-scale agriculture can be modern
and innovative, while maintaining a very real
connection to people and place. “The best way
of taking care of the earth is to have everybody
invested in it,” says Mike. Though there is no
end to the hard work (i.e. 3 am checkups on
greenhouse temperatures), there is the pleasure
of being outdoors and that crisp, lemony taste
of fresh sorrel—indicators of a well-chosen
profession and a job well done.
More Than Just Talk
It’s no secret that the local food movement
has picked up momentum in Virginia’s
Piedmont. Yet, there are still a number
of challenges that local food producers
and distributors face as they try to create a
sustainable local food economy.
This January, PEC decided to try something
new—we hosted our first-ever work session
for our Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters in
Charlottesville, Loudoun, and the Northern
Piedmont. The goal was to provide a space in
which local food providers could bring up a topic
of interest, meet others who are interested in a
similar issue, and then take part in constructive
conversations and strategic planning centered
around a plan of action.
“Going into the workshop, we didn’t know
what to expect,” says Jessica Palmer, PEC’s Buy
Fresh Buy Local Coordinator. “We wanted to
facilitate these important conversations but were
aware of how difficult it could be to tackle some
of the topics. But, it went really well. It was great
to see our partners come together and really
take on some of the challenges. Everyone was
engaged—leaning in and focused on developing
a plan.”
The nine action groups at the workshop
each centered around a different topic, ranging
from coordinated feed buying to social media
marketing. Each group then generated an action
plan to guide their work together over the next
twelve months.
Educating Consumers—
Starting a Local Food Seminar Series
Bill Calvani and KeriAn Dodson of Rebecca’s
Natural Food attended the workshop session,
and they teamed up with John Whiteside of
Wolf Creek Farm and Susan Vidal of Brightwood
Vineyard & Farm. Their action plan is focused on
how to better educate consumers about the local
food system, and they are turning words into
action.
The group is organizing a seminar series at
Rebecca’s that will start in May. The objective of
their “Restoring Local Food Systems” series is to
have local producers, distributors and experts of
all varieties share their experiences in preserving
and rebuilding their portion of the local food
system. Their hope is that, through this speaker
series, consumers will better understand how the
various parts of their community fit together, and
how they can feasibly make local food a part of
their life. Be sure to check Rebecca’s Facebook
page or BuyLocalVirginia.org for updates, and
we hope to see you there!
The Piedmont Environmental
Council works with citizens to keep
Virginia’s Piedmont a wonderful
place—by protecting beautiful and
historic landscapes, building great
communities, promoting local farms
and food, restoring natural resources, and
connecting people with nature.
We are pleased to have helped citizens protect nearly 360,000
acres in our nine-county region with voluntary conservation
easements—one of the most dramatic private land conservation
success stories in America.
Check out our website if you want to:
