Despite James Conner’s heroics, Pitt fell in two overtimes to No. 24
Duke, 51-48...Conner rushed for a career-high 263 yards and scored
three TDs...the Panthers rolled up 594 yards, held the ball for more
than 41 minutes and did not have a turnover...with 2:56 left in regulaton
and the score tied, 38-38, Pitt launched a 72-yard drive to
the Duke 8...but the Panthers (4-5, 2-3) missed a 26-yard field goal
as time expired, setting the stage for Thomas Sirk’s game-winning
five-yard TD run in the second OT...Duke (7-1, 3-1) was powered by
QB Anthony Boone, who threw for 266 yards and three TDs, and
Jamison Crowder, who had 165 receivng yards and two scores.

Pitt piled up more than 500 yards in total offense for the third consecutive
game but, as with the two prior contests, fell short on the
scoreboard, dropping a 40-35 decision to host North Carolina...the
Panthers seized a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and still led, 28-26,
entering the final period...UNC quarterback Marquise Williams gave
the Tar Heels (5-5, 3-3) their first lead, 34-28, when he dashed 45
yards for a TD early in the fourth...Pitt (4-6, 2-4) reclaimed the lead,
35-34, with a James Conner 22-yard run with 3:33 left...it was Conner’s
fourth rushing TD of the game, giving him an ACC-record (tied)
21 on the year...but Williams, who accounted for 398 offensive yards,
directed one final drive, capped by T.J. Logan’s one-yard run with 50
seconds left...on its last possession, Pitt reached midfield on a Chad
Voytik scramble but Malik Simmons forced a fumble at the end of
the run and UNC recovered to end the threat...Conner rushed for 220
yards, giving him 1,562 on the season, the most ever by an ACC or
Pitt sophomore.
