Pitt fell victim to a furious fourth-quarter rally in a 35-34 loss to
Houston in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl…the Panthers
(6-7) held leads of 31-6 and 34-13 in the final period…Houston quarterback
Greg Ward fueled the rally by throwing three touchdown
passes in the final 3:41—the last two after the Cougars (8-5) recovered
onside kicks—and then completed the game-winning twopoint
conversion to cap the largest comeback in an FBS game this
season and largest ever in a bowl game that didn't go into overtime…
Ward finished with 274 passing yards and also rushed for 92…the
Panthers led by 21 points with 6:14 left when Chris Blewitt kicked a
29-yard field goal…Blewitt also had a career-long 52-yarder as time
expired in the first half to give Pitt a 17-6 lead...the Panthers were
under the direction of interim coach Joe Rudolph, who replaced the
departing Paul Chryst.
