Welcome
With more garments in our Trek & Travel and Multi-activity
ranges than ever before, and more stories pouring in
from all kinds of users than we've ever experienced, this
28 pager is packed. What do you think? Have we got the
balance right? Would you like more of some things and
less of others? Do we need more photos, less photos,
bigger garment shots or more garment description?
If you get chance, do let us know - it does help, even
if we can't please all the people all the time!
Check out the colour palette
– everything under the sun
(and rain) from...
to Páramo’s Trek &
Travel/Multi-activity
catalogue for 2007
Saving paper
Likewise, while we'd love to produce
bigger catalogues to pack even more
in, we're mindful of using up more
trees, even while with your help we're
helping Trees for Life to plant more.
On that note, if you could receive the
catalogue by email, paper would be
saved, so please do forward your
email to info@paramo.co.uk and we'll
endeavour to contact you electronically.
If required, we can always post a
paper catalogue out to you on request.
In the Páramo spring/summer collection...
NEW HUES!
By the time you read this
catalogue, our updated website
will be online (fingers crossed).
It's designed to be easier for us
to keep up-to-date and amend,
but equally important to make it
more straightforward for you to
navigate, and simpler for you
to interact and correspond with
us online. Visit www.paramo.co.uk
“
I am writing to express my appreciation
of your range of Trek & Travel clothing. I
have just returned from a 3 week hiking,
climbing and kayaking trip to British
Columbia, Canada... The weather ranged
from very hot, 38C in the Okanagan Valley,
to -2C in the Skagit mountains. The clothing
perfomed as expected, keeping me cool and
dry in the heat, and warm and dry in the
cooler conditions. It was brilliant. Easy to
wash and quick drying.
ACTIVE TRAVEL DEVELOPMENTS
Cool comfort starts on
Page 10

Why Páramo?
It’s tried and tested around the globe
Last year we travelled to Peru for
3 weeks, where we wore one or more of
the garments almost all the time. They
performed well in varied conditions
from the heat of the tropical sun and
dryness of the coastal desert to the rain
in Cuzco to the sub-zero cold to the
Andes mountains while trekking the
Inca trail. Come rain or shine they
were effective and comfortable.
Simon Gaines & Beverly Hodgson
As Expedition Accountant for
Raleigh International's Patagonian
and Mongolian expeditions I got
chance to travel around South
America. I took with me a Páramo
jacket, which I virtually lived in for a
year. Having worn the jacket in
all conditions, I’m now a total
Páramo convert. It was
waterproof, warm, cool and
comfortable. I also took the waterproof
trousers and again am a total fan,
especially after using them in the cold
and snowy conditions in Alaska in
January.
Debbie Jeremiah
We’re happy to catalogue the benefits of Páramo
– but don’t just take our word for it! Feedback
from travellers who’ve ventured near and far gives
you a flavour of what comfort and versatility
Páramo can offer you on your adventures...
I've had the same Reversible Shirt for
9 or 10 years now. It has done over 14
expeditions to all 7 continents, 10 first
ascents as far apart as Patagonia and
Mongolia, hundreds of days climbing
and working as a Mountaineering
Instructor in Scotland and is only now
beginning to reach the end of its life...
An excellent piece of kit and the most
durable item of outdoor clothing I have
ever owned.
Alan Halewood
Centre Manager, The Ice Factor
I have used my Páramo in the jungles of Guyana, the deserts of
Morocco and this summer the Polish Tatra while leading expedition
groups. I wouldn't consider anything else next year for my
International Mountain Leader assessment in Switzerland. I
always recommend your products on all of the courses I deliver
and have converted many of my friends over from the 'dark side'.
Dan Whittaker
Just a little note to say how happy
I am with my Páramo clothing, it's the
best! I will be wearing my Páramo kit
on my 700 mile walk around five of the
best walks in England and Scotland this
summer, including The Great Glen Way,
West Highland Way, Pennine Way,
Coast 2 Coast and the Cumbrian Way, as
living, walking proof of how reliable your
Páramo kit is. Not bad for someone
riddled with arthritis."
Paul
You were absolutely spot on with
your advice about the waterproof - it
worked in both warm and cold situations.
Perfect for the rainforest and 4000m
at the summit of Mt Kinnabalu in
Borneo. I will definitely be
recommending Páramo to my friends.
Eileen Donnelly
"I used the Explorer top for almost the entire three weeks of the
kayaking phase on my Raleigh International trip to Chile. I
found that it was very good at moving the water off my skin,
making it much more comfortable to paddle. On the very warm
days I reversed it, allowing the water to cool me down. After a
week's paddling in sea water the top could almost stand up on
its own! What amazed me when I washed it was not only how
quickly it dried but also how the furry side was dry much faster
than the smooth side - proof of its ability to move water!"
Michael Barrs
Where in the
world?
Last year we were intrigued and
delighted by your response to our
‘Old is Beautiful’ quest – seeking
out stories of ancient Páramos that
were still going strong.
We’d love to find out how
well-travelled your Páramo
garment is – where has it been,
what has it seen? Nick Brown,
Páramo’s founder, will judge your
travellers tales and award a new
Fuera Peak jacket to the best.
Send your tales to:
‘Where in the world’, Páramo
Directional Clothing systems,
Unit F, Durgates Industrial Estate,
Wadhurst, TN5 6DF or email to
marketing@paramo.co.uk with
‘Where in the world’ as the
Subject.
Main competition terms &
conditions apply.
The judges’ decision is final.
Closing date: September 1st 2007.
Just returned from Costa Rica
- 90 degrees in the shade with
very high humidity. The travel
shirt was brilliant - keeping
you as cool as was possible,
and despite the high humidity
dried quickly as good as new.
Ramble on!!
Ramblers rate Páramo
– it’s official!
We were delighted to hear
that for the third year in a
row, Páramo kit features
strongly in the line-up of
favourite walking brands
voted for by readers of walk
magazine.
The Ramblers’ Association
members voted Páramo into
Gold medal position for Best
Waterproof Jacket, as well as
Silver for Best Baselayer and Silver
for Best Fleece. As a result,
Páramo came out in Silver
position overall when nominating
the kit brand they trust the most.
We know that Ramblers take
Páramo on holiday with them
too...
“I can only repeat what I say to
my home club members and to
Ramblers Holidays group
members when the subject of
gear comes up – I believe that
Páramo is the market leader in
top layer clothing required to be
both waterproof and breathable.“
Jeff Reading, Ramblers Holidays
leader.
Ramblers Holidays help to fund
the charitable work of the
Ramblers’ Association. They run
walking trips to 60 countries –
with some 200 holidays to choose
from. Explore the wilds of New
Zealand or walk with wildlife in
the Zambian bush. Hike beneath
the rainforest canopy in Costa
Rica or over spectacular passes in
the Carpathian Mountains.
The Pájaro – part
of the Billion
Tree Campaign
Trees for Life have sent a big
thanks to all who have bought
the Pájaro jacket – the donations
from each jacket sold will help TfL
fulfil their commitment to plant
100,000 native trees this year in
the Scottish Highlands. This
substantial scaling up in TfL’s
conservation work converges with
a new global project, launched
late last year by the United
Nations Environment Programme,
the Billion Tree Campaign.
TfL’s 100,000 trees will make a
substantial and significant
contribution towards restoring the
Caledonian Forest and linking up
YHA - Heading for the hills
If you’re heading for the hills, then head for YHA – the UK’s
leading budget accommodation provider for walkers. With YHA
you stay in the very heart of the best hiking country in England
and Wales, with top routes passing right
outside the front door.
Danywenalt YHA
the isolated
remnants of
the original forest.
TfL have scheduled more volunteer
work weeks than ever before – 37
in total for 2007 – to plant these
trees. You can support them by
joining one – for details visit
www.treesforlife.org.uk. In the
words of TfL “Every tree planted
is a statement that simple actions
do make a real and positive
difference for the planet.”
Black Sail YHA
Enjoy walking,
but looking for
a challenge?
Three Peaks, Ten Tors is a brand
new book which explores the
‘fun’ (and ‘less-fun’) aspects of UK
challenge walks. With details of
15 long-distance and challenge
walks, plus ideas for devising your
own challenges, this book
provides all the planning advice,
route detail and schedules you’ll
need. You could even try the
Three Peaks 48 hour challenge –
using public transport!
Cicerone’s spring crop of new
guides also includes new guides
for walking in Scotland, the Lake
District, and overseas – look out
for the latest editions of the Tour
Forget drafty dorms and hostel
chores, YHA left those behind years
ago. On offer now is simple but
stylish accommodation, with small,
private en suite rooms available at
many destinations. It’s not even
necessary to be a member to stay
any more, but it costs only £15.95
to join, and half that amount if you
take advantage of the special offer
below. It’s less for the under 26s –
and those who join always pay
lower rates at hostels.
For the best of the Lake District, try
YHA Keswick, where a major
improvement scheme was carried
out last year, or YHA Wastwater, a
stunning building with access to
Sca Fell. Or, what about the iconic
YHA Black Sail, nearly three miles
from the nearest road in the
See www.yha.org.uk for more information.
of Mont Blanc and Chamonix to
Zermatt guides, plus new guides
for the Tour of Monte Rosa, and
the Mountains of Montenegro.
For more about Cicerone’s current
range of guide books, visit
www.cicerone.co.uk.
Ennerdale Valley, where a view of
Great Gable is the backdrop?
In Snowdonia, you’ll find YHA
Snowdon Ranger and YHA
Pen y Pass, once the haunt of
Victorian climbers and the perfect
‘base camp’ for Snowdon. Travel
south to the Brecon Beacons and
there’s YHA Danywenallt, a
converted farmhouse right next
to the Talybont Reservoir or YHA
Llwyn y Celyn, which both offer
easy access to some superb
countryside.
Most locations now provide a full
meals service, offering the best
local produce available, cooked
fresh to order along with fine
wines and ales from the top
regional micro breweries.
YHA has teamed up with Páramo to offer customers half
price membership throughout the remainder of 2007.
Claim your discount by calling YHA on 0870 770 8868 and
quoting Páramo 07. The half price offer applies to all
categories - individual (normal price £15.95), young person
(normally £10), group (£25.50) and family (£22.95) - but
excludes life membership.
Arctic Voice
Recording the thoughts, concerns
and experience of the Inuit in
relation to climate change, is the
primary objective of this expedition
by Glenn Morris, Richard Cree
and Stephen Doughty. These
recordings will form the basis of a
radio programme – thereby giving
a voice to the Arctic.
Glenn, whose Greenland journey
we documented in last year’s High
Mountain catalogue, is planning
a journey from Arctic Canada via
the historic North West Passage.
The eight month journey, using
kayak and dog sledge, aims also
to link schools en route with
primary schools in the UK and so
foster dialogue to emphasise the
impact of our actions on our
children’s future.
The team are honing their
kayaking skills in preparation,
and testing their Páramo kit, whilst
also doing presentations to
participating schools about their
journey (in addition to their
ordinary jobs!). Storytelling, art,
science and geography will all be
drawn in, and aid better
understanding of how our
behaviour here dramatically affects
the lives of other children and their
communities.
In International Polar Year, which
also kicks off in March 2007, it is
hoped that the stories and
accounts gathered from native
people living in northern Canada
will form a powerful message for
those in the urban world. If you’d
Mercantour Diary
mountains, marmots
& markets
Day 1, Sunday, late April Day 2, Monday
Up early – Via Ferrata near to After playing at horse rustlers
La Colmiane this morning. Often in the morning for a few shots,
dubbed the easy way to rock climb, we headed upwards to enjoy
this proved no mean feat for the some serious scrambling
faint-hearted. Some were more game sporting the newest ‘Opal
than others to harness themselves up, Fruit’ colours of Fuera
using the iron rungs and cable to climb Smocks. The non-scramblers
otherwise serious rock faces. Dave watched the marmots
Willis, our climbing photographer, hung sunbathing and listened to their
off the face to get his shots. Vasco and whistling, while photographer
3rd Element jackets in their element! Dave sought to capture the
Picnic lunch in the sunshine, then landscape, the activity and the
Evening: Choral concert in for a starring role!
St Martin Vesubie’s atmospheric
Mel’s revealed.
A short but dramatic drive from Nice and we assembled with Mel and Liz of Spacebetween to
map out a plan of campaign for our 3 1 /2 day photoshoot. Their rural retreat, La Zourciere, in
Berthemont les Bains proved an delightful base for every kind of activity; the fact that they were
English made it all very simple to sort; their fluent French meant it could all be put into practice;
their patient guiding was a godsend; their access to willing extra ‘models’ an added bonus.
Day 3, Tuesday
Some lovely early morning
lake-side walking shots, showing
off the new Damson Taiga on
Liz among others.
Up we went once more and split
into two groups – snowholing
lesson for one lot, birdwatching for
the other. The snowholers worked
hard, snug in their Torres insulator
smocks and gilets. The fauna lovers
enjoyed a quiet hour scanning the
skies for often seen golden eagles
and lammergeiers. Pitched a tent
by the river to capture the Torres
in a camping scene.
Revitalised by lunch, off to
the Alpha Wolf Park at
Le Boréon to watch the once
native wolves roam the forested
reserve, emerging to be fed and
photographed.
Late afternoon, headed
coastwards for an experience
which couldn’t have been more of
a contrast. Sitting enjoying an
apéro on a jasmine scented terrace,
the magnificent Mercantour
National Park seemed much
more than just an hour away.
Day 4, Wednesday
Nice – a complete contrast.
Perfect for photographing the
Trek and Travel range amid the
jewel-like colours of the flower
market, the tempting trays of
marzipan fruits, the glorious
palette of basketed herbs and
spices. We explored the cobbled
alleys of the old town, drank coffee
in the sunlit squares and finally
matched the azure of the Med to
the blue Saba shirt.
By tea-time, we were back in
England - marvelling! Many
thanks Mel & Liz – long may you
continue! Can we go to the Vallée
des Merveilles next time please?
The Mercantour National
Park and the well-named Alpes-
and wildflower meadows open up
huge possibilities in terms of
activities and adventures.
“
The Tacana shirt worked well. I took it to New Zealand and it kept me
warm when I used it under a fleece and yet cool when I used it on its own in
sunshine. It was so light I could hardly feel I was wearing it. It also travelled
well as it packed down into a pocket of my rucksack. A well designed
garment, ideal for adventure travel.
Páramo Windproofs and Stretch Pants
Páramo windproof garments are made from Nikwax Windproof fabric which is a closely woven
microfibre. They cut the wind and deflect the rain whilst providing excellent moisture vapour
transfer. Ideally combined with a Páramo Cambia base layer or Reversible Shirt for temperate days
when breathability and flexibility are more important than total waterproofing. Páramo windproofs
can be protected with Nikwax TX.Direct to offer renewable water-repellency, indefinitely!
Páramo Stretch Pants are made from Parameta ® X fabric, they trap air next to the skin for warmth
and direct water away from the skin’s surface, ensuring your comfort during all activities.
“
In all my years of mountaineering, I have not come
across an equivalent jacket that matches the Fuera’s
qualities to keep out wind and wet, yet breathe
freely and while so light be able to withstand the
demands of a two month expedition and remain
almost like new. It is a winner.
The Fuera Smock has become an
extremely popular garment for the
WIN
When heading into the outdoors or
travelling to remote parts of the world,
we enjoy the freedom to explore our
planet. At the same time, we move
ourselves further away from the things we
take for granted. Emergency healthcare
may be some distance away, risk of
contracting disease higher and clean
water hard to obtain.
Lifesystems’ mission is to ensure that
independent people with a passion for
exploration and the outdoors have the
best healthcare protection possible. Their
range of products encompasses first aid
kits, travel medical packs, mountain
survival equipment, protection from
biting insects and water purification. The
Lifesystems Mountain Pack is a superb,
comprehensive First Aid kit for the
mountaineer, serious trekker, outdoor
enthusiast or small group taking part in
more challenging activities in remote
areas. It has been assembled with the
help of British medical mountaineer
Hugh Montgomery and members of the
British Special Forces medical team. It’s
equally at home in the Himalayas, the
Alps or any area where professional
medical care may be hours or days away.
Lifesystems invest substantially in research
and development in order to deliver
quality when it’s needed. They equip
expeditions going to remote, extreme
environments like the Arctic, Everest and
the Amazon jungle where kit can be truly
tried and tested, and have some of the
world's most experienced medical
adventurers working in the team.
Mountain Pack
worth £22 – 12 to be won

PÁRAMO
AMONGST
Anyone who spends their time
crawling around in penguin
guano for the sake of “art” needs
to be wearing clothing which can
handle it. Likewise, sitting for
hours on end waiting patiently for
the right light and the right action
in some of the more inhospitable
regions of the world such as the
Falkland Islands and the Antarctic
Peninsula you simply have to stay
warm and dry. During our two
year-long project to document the
lives of penguins in the area for
our book Penguin Life – surviving
with style in the South Atlantic
– we tested the gear to the limits.
In our expeditions in the South
Atlantic Islands and the northernmost
coasts of the vast continent
of Antarctica, we relied on
Páramo to do just that, knowing
that in doing so we were also
helping to contribute to the
Aspira Fund for conservation.
The hot topic of the moment in
terms of wildlife and the
environment is climate change
and on a more personal level you
have to be more prepared than
ever for rapid fluctuations in the
prevailing weather conditions that
PENGUINS
surround you. The South Atlantic
islands can be more reminiscent
of the highlands of Scotland than
the frozen wastes we all believe
Antarctica is made of. In the
howling wind and torrential rain
we tested our resilience and that
of our clothing to the limit. It also
needed to cope with the warm
summery conditions that can
suddenly appear from nowhere.
It was 22 degrees on Christmas
Day! To cap it all, it even survived
the car jet wash when we
eventually made it home, the only
way to rid you of the lingering
effects of hundreds of thousands
of penguins!
Photographing penguins has been
one of the most enjoyable and
hilarious projects we have
undertaken, the cramped and cold
conditions made bearable by
remaining snug and toasty, whilst
the unique ability to vent allowed
us to keep our cool even when
things weren’t going quite
according to plan as they inevitably
don’t when photographing wildlife.
Miquelina –
something to
celebrate!
Back in 1977, just
as Nick Brown was
creating the first
Nikwax products,
a Colombian nun,
Esther Castano
Mejia, became
convinced that
she needed to
offer practical
as well as
spiritual help -
her religious order is dedicated
to rescuing women and girls from
prostitution. With a few second
hand machines she set up a sewing
workshop. So began Creaciones
Miquelina, named after the founder
of the religious order, Sister Micaela.
15 years later in 1992, the first
contact was made with Páramo and
since then the little sewing
workshop has grown into an
efficient and specialist garment
factory producing the Páramo range
of waterproofs and reversible shirts.
In August this year, that 30th
birthday will be commemorated by
Miquelina – with approaching 300
female workers and their children
celebrating all that has come from
the partnership between the
Miquelina Foundation and Páramo
– not just jobs and training for
vulnerable women, but housing, a
kindergarten, a community centre,
a canteen and a virtual library
among other things.
Look out for details on the birthday
celebrations in catalogues to come!
“I have been walking and climbing
now for 35 years and I have to say
that Páramo is the
best gear I have ever
had. Thank you.
The fact that I am
hopefully helping
your project in
Bogotá is a
bonus.”
Penny Kirby
Julie Tullis successfully
summited K2 on 4 August
1986. 20 years on, her son Chris
and family commemorated her
achievement (and her tragic
death on the descent) with
a 5 week trek to K2 basecamp.
Chris Tullis imagined that he might
see K2 and want to climb it – but
his chief emotion on viewing K2
from the basecamp was awe at its
size, its difficulty, its remoteness.
He felt no desire to follow his
mother’s footsteps, the first
British woman to reach the
summit of arguably the world’s
most gruelling mountain, only
respect at what she had achieved.
The focus of the trip for the Tullis
family of Chris, his wife Julie,
Stephanie (17) and Matthew (14)
was to reach the Gilkey Memorial
on the lower slopes of K2 on the
4th August, the 20th anniversary
of Julie’s summiting, and leave
there one of her snow stakes,
engraved to commemorate the
occasion.
However, the fantastic adventure
was much more than just a
‘pilgrimage’ – the 180km round
trip represented 3 weeks of walking
for 10 hours a day at altitude to
eventually reach a height of 5,200
m. Every day brought new
challenges and excitements –
crossing a ‘freezing’ river, a badly
made bridge, landslides that
blocked the track necessitating a
circuitous, and fairly hairy alternative
route. Matt became the youngest
person to go to K2 base camp.
Unexpected was the heat –
minimal cloud and temperatures
of 90-110°C made thirst a constant
battle and meant that the
disappointment that there was no
snow along the tracks was
tempered by being able to enjoy the
best views of K2 for over 20 years.
The Tullis family trip was organised
by Devon-based Spirit of
Adventure (www.spirit-ofadventure.com),
who brought
20
together the 21 expedition
members aged from 14 to 70,
all with a link to K2.
The hardest thing according to
Chris and Julie was not the lack of
toilet facilities, nor the dwindling
variety of food along the route,
nor the constant heat during the
trek – but coming back, especially
years on
K2 revisited
”
after forging such fantastic
friendships and spending 24 hours
a day together for 5 weeks, most
of it well away from ‘civilisation’!
Chris (a long term Páramo fan) kitted the family in
Páramo waterproofs, Reversible Shirts plus Trek and Travel
Shirts and Trousers – all proved essentials for comfort and
versatility, for warmth at night and coolness during the
day, although supplemented by wearing what the locals
wear – a £5.50 made-to-measure, long, cotton chemise!
Julie on Páramo
It was great to wash, you just threw it in some water
“
wherever you were and hung it on a handy tree to dry.
The long trousers and long sleeves were essential to
prevent us burning – by 10am it was 80°C and we had to
carry on walking till 4 pm despite the intense heat. We
found the waterproof trousers and reversible shirts came
into their own in the morning and evening.

PRIMAL
Q UEST
The Primal Quest course was unveiled
with assurances that this would be the
hardest race ever. Team Aberdeen report
back on...
...the good, the bad and the ugly
A coach ride through the night
brought us into the desert. Tom
hadn’t been well so we hung out
near the improvised toilet whilst
other teams met their equine team
mate. Nick and I ambled over to
the one remaining horse – the one
chewing a carrot and wearing a
straw hat!
With the horse riding section out
of the way, we embarked on the
first desert trek. It was hot, thirsty
work. Whilst we’d been intelligent
on the fluid front, foot problems
were surfacing, Ruth’s trainers kept
sand out but caused overheating
and moisture build up.
We shuffled towards the bikes at
the end of the first day with mixed
hearts. Tom’s sickness had returned
and he collapsed minutes from
transition. It had been a hard day
compounded by disappointment
that we’d lost touch with the
lead teams. In transition, we
leapfrogged several teams and
were back to our positive selves.
The next transition revealed the
full horror of Ruth’s feet. Her heels
were the most disgusting thing
I’ve ever seen! After an extended
lay up, we embarked on a truly
beautiful part of the course.
The sunset provided stunning red
sandstone images to mitigate the
pain of another 24hrs on foot with
temperatures touching 47 degrees.
45 miles later we docked for
another 3hrs of feet patching.
Ruth, clearly in severe pain, hadn’t
uttered a single word of complaint.
We had to carry our entire paddle
and swim gear 2 miles up to the
top of the canyon. Nick set off like
a Viagra-smoking Sherpa, laden
with 3 huge bags and 4 paddles.
Halfway up we were passed by
Kiwi team, Port Nelson, with two
wearing nothing whatsoever on
their bottom halves due to major
chaffing issues. I offered them a
sliver of Germoline. They accepted
with thanks – a special moment
between 2 teams ravaged by
conditions.
Transition at the top of the
canyon was our longest and last.
Ruth was advised to spend 6hrs
allowing her feet to recover.
Infection was setting in, with a real
danger of total skin loss on her
toes. We improvised the bike
boxes into 4 comfortable beds
and took a long snooze.
Morning broke, feet were patched
and we left the transition after
9hrs. The biking was a real
pleasure and the abseil through
Gemini Bridge spectacular.
We passed several teams and
were in the top 20 but the
feelgood factor was short-lived.
Halfway through the bike stage,
Ruth had a horrific crash that still
makes me shudder. She casually
remarked “I’m pretty certain my
arm is broken... I can’t ride but I
can push my bike one handed”.
In the shade of a bush we
inspected the arm. We busted
open the radio and Ruth was
whisked off to hospital via
helicopter. She later left the USA
to have her arm pinned in the UK.
As we rode on to Moab minus our
talisgirl, we met a Canadian and
an American who’d lost 2 team
mates. We discussed our options:
Nick was desperate to carry on –
as a new father, it would be his
last major outing this season. Tom
and I had the world champs in
Sweden to consider. In hindsight,
we were right to pull out, but the
emptiness was unpleasant as we
cheered other teams through the
finish. Nick joined the Canadian
and American to enjoy a course
that got better and better.
Would I recommend PQ to other
UK racers? Yes, unquestionably.
The course was vast, beautiful,
brilliantly organised, competitive
yet a realistic challenge to anyone
prepared to dedicate time to it.
The rope sections were better
than anything I’d previously
experienced. On the downside,
very little navigational skill was
needed until the last section.
I‘d like to pay tribute to Ruth who
acquired legendary status and
Nick, who was the consummate
team man through our 4 1 /2 days
on the course. Finally I’d like to
thank our four major sponsors:
Aberdeen Asset Management for
the funding, Páramo for clothing
that excelled in the harshest of
environments; Marin for bikes that
made riding a pleasure; and EAS
for shipping drinks and food.
We look forward to what the next
race throws at us.
