Why Páramo?
It’s tried and tested around the globe
Last year we travelled to Peru for
3 weeks, where we wore one or more of
the garments almost all the time. They
performed well in varied conditions
from the heat of the tropical sun and
dryness of the coastal desert to the rain
in Cuzco to the sub-zero cold to the
Andes mountains while trekking the
Inca trail. Come rain or shine they
were effective and comfortable.

Arctic Voice
Recording the thoughts, concerns
and experience of the Inuit in
relation to climate change, is the
primary objective of this expedition
by Glenn Morris, Richard Cree
and Stephen Doughty. These
recordings will form the basis of a
radio programme – thereby giving
a voice to the Arctic.
Glenn, whose Greenland journey
we documented in last year’s High
Mountain catalogue, is planning
a journey from Arctic Canada via
the historic North West Passage.
The eight month journey, using
kayak and dog sledge, aims also
to link schools en route with
primary schools in the UK and so
foster dialogue to emphasise the
impact of our actions on our
children’s future.
The team are honing their
kayaking skills in preparation,
and testing their Páramo kit, whilst
also doing presentations to
participating schools about their
journey (in addition to their
ordinary jobs!). Storytelling, art,
science and geography will all be
drawn in, and aid better
understanding of how our
behaviour here dramatically affects
the lives of other children and their
communities.
In International Polar Year, which
also kicks off in March 2007, it is
hoped that the stories and
accounts gathered from native
people living in northern Canada
will form a powerful message for

A short but dramatic drive from Nice and we assembled with Mel and Liz of Spacebetween to
map out a plan of campaign for our 3 1 /2 day photoshoot. Their rural retreat, La Zourciere, in
Berthemont les Bains proved an delightful base for every kind of activity; the fact that they were
English made it all very simple to sort; their fluent French meant it could all be put into practice;
their patient guiding was a godsend; their access to willing extra ‘models’ an added bonus.
Day 3, Tuesday

Up we went once more and split
into two groups – snowholing
lesson for one lot, birdwatching for
the other. The snowholers worked
hard, snug in their Torres insulator
smocks and gilets. The fauna lovers
enjoyed a quiet hour scanning the
skies for often seen golden eagles
and lammergeiers. Pitched a tent
by the river to capture the Torres
in a camping scene.
Revitalised by lunch, off to
the Alpha Wolf Park at
Le Boréon to watch the once
native wolves roam the forested
reserve, emerging to be fed and
photographed.
Late afternoon, headed
coastwards for an experience
which couldn’t have been more of
a contrast. Sitting enjoying an
apéro on a jasmine scented terrace,
the magnificent Mercantour
National Park seemed much
more than just an hour away.
Day 4, Wednesday
Nice – a complete contrast.
Perfect for photographing the
Trek and Travel range amid the
jewel-like colours of the flower
market, the tempting trays of
marzipan fruits, the glorious
palette of basketed herbs and
spices. We explored the cobbled
alleys of the old town, drank coffee
in the sunlit squares and finally
matched the azure of the Med to
the blue Saba shirt.
By tea-time, we were back in
England - marvelling! Many
thanks Mel & Liz – long may you
continue! Can we go to the Vallée
des Merveilles next time please?

AMONGST
Anyone who spends their time
crawling around in penguin
guano for the sake of “art” needs
to be wearing clothing which can
handle it. Likewise, sitting for
hours on end waiting patiently for
the right light and the right action
in some of the more inhospitable
regions of the world such as the
Falkland Islands and the Antarctic
Peninsula you simply have to stay
warm and dry. During our two
year-long project to document the
lives of penguins in the area for
our book Penguin Life – surviving
with style in the South Atlantic
– we tested the gear to the limits.
In our expeditions in the South
Atlantic Islands and the northernmost
coasts of the vast continent
of Antarctica, we relied on
Páramo to do just that, knowing
that in doing so we were also
helping to contribute to the
Aspira Fund for conservation.
The hot topic of the moment in
terms of wildlife and the
environment is climate change
and on a more personal level you
have to be more prepared than
ever for rapid fluctuations in the
prevailing weather conditions that
PENGUINS
surround you. The South Atlantic
islands can be more reminiscent
of the highlands of Scotland than
the frozen wastes we all believe
Antarctica is made of. In the
howling wind and torrential rain
we tested our resilience and that
of our clothing to the limit. It also
needed to cope with the warm
summery conditions that can
suddenly appear from nowhere.
It was 22 degrees on Christmas
Day! To cap it all, it even survived
the car jet wash when we
eventually made it home, the only
way to rid you of the lingering
effects of hundreds of thousands
of penguins!
Photographing penguins has been
one of the most enjoyable and
hilarious projects we have
undertaken, the cramped and cold
conditions made bearable by
remaining snug and toasty, whilst
the unique ability to vent allowed
us to keep our cool even when
things weren’t going quite
according to plan as they inevitably
don’t when photographing wildlife.

Miquelina –
something to
celebrate!
Back in 1977, just
as Nick Brown was
creating the first
Nikwax products,
a Colombian nun,
Esther Castano
Mejia, became
convinced that
she needed to
offer practical
as well as
spiritual help -
her religious order is dedicated
to rescuing women and girls from
prostitution. With a few second
hand machines she set up a sewing
workshop. So began Creaciones
Miquelina, named after the founder
of the religious order, Sister Micaela.
15 years later in 1992, the first
contact was made with Páramo and
since then the little sewing
workshop has grown into an
efficient and specialist garment
factory producing the Páramo range
of waterproofs and reversible shirts.
In August this year, that 30th
birthday will be commemorated by
Miquelina – with approaching 300
female workers and their children
celebrating all that has come from
the partnership between the
Miquelina Foundation and Páramo
– not just jobs and training for
vulnerable women, but housing, a
kindergarten, a community centre,
a canteen and a virtual library
among other things.

Julie Tullis successfully
summited K2 on 4 August
1986. 20 years on, her son Chris
and family commemorated her
achievement (and her tragic
death on the descent) with
a 5 week trek to K2 basecamp.
Chris Tullis imagined that he might
see K2 and want to climb it – but
his chief emotion on viewing K2
from the basecamp was awe at its
size, its difficulty, its remoteness.
He felt no desire to follow his
mother’s footsteps, the first
British woman to reach the
summit of arguably the world’s
most gruelling mountain, only
respect at what she had achieved.
The focus of the trip for the Tullis
family of Chris, his wife Julie,
Stephanie (17) and Matthew (14)
was to reach the Gilkey Memorial
on the lower slopes of K2 on the
4th August, the 20th anniversary
of Julie’s summiting, and leave
there one of her snow stakes,
engraved to commemorate the
occasion.
However, the fantastic adventure
was much more than just a
‘pilgrimage’ – the 180km round
trip represented 3 weeks of walking
for 10 hours a day at altitude to
eventually reach a height of 5,200
m. Every day brought new
challenges and excitements –
crossing a ‘freezing’ river, a badly
made bridge, landslides that
blocked the track necessitating a
circuitous, and fairly hairy alternative
route. Matt became the youngest
person to go to K2 base camp.
Unexpected was the heat –
minimal cloud and temperatures
of 90-110°C made thirst a constant
battle and meant that the
disappointment that there was no
snow along the tracks was
tempered by being able to enjoy the
best views of K2 for over 20 years.
The Tullis family trip was organised
by Devon-based Spirit of
Adventure (www.spirit-ofadventure.com),
who brought

together the 21 expedition
members aged from 14 to 70,
all with a link to K2.
The hardest thing according to
Chris and Julie was not the lack of
toilet facilities, nor the dwindling
variety of food along the route,
nor the constant heat during the
trek – but coming back, especially
years on
K2 revisited
”
after forging such fantastic
friendships and spending 24 hours
a day together for 5 weeks, most
of it well away from ‘civilisation’!

It was great to wash, you just threw it in some water

wherever you were and hung it on a handy tree to dry.
The long trousers and long sleeves were essential to
prevent us burning – by 10am it was 80°C and we had to
carry on walking till 4 pm despite the intense heat. We
found the waterproof trousers and reversible shirts came
into their own in the morning and evening.

Q UEST
The Primal Quest course was unveiled
with assurances that this would be the
hardest race ever. Team Aberdeen report
back on...
...the good, the bad and the ugly
A coach ride through the night
brought us into the desert. Tom
hadn’t been well so we hung out
near the improvised toilet whilst
other teams met their equine team
mate. Nick and I ambled over to
the one remaining horse – the one
chewing a carrot and wearing a
straw hat!
With the horse riding section out
of the way, we embarked on the
first desert trek. It was hot, thirsty
work. Whilst we’d been intelligent
on the fluid front, foot problems
were surfacing, Ruth’s trainers kept
sand out but caused overheating
and moisture build up.
We shuffled towards the bikes at
the end of the first day with mixed
hearts. Tom’s sickness had returned
and he collapsed minutes from
transition. It had been a hard day
compounded by disappointment
that we’d lost touch with the
lead teams. In transition, we
leapfrogged several teams and
were back to our positive selves.
The next transition revealed the
full horror of Ruth’s feet. Her heels
were the most disgusting thing
I’ve ever seen! After an extended
lay up, we embarked on a truly
beautiful part of the course.
The sunset provided stunning red
sandstone images to mitigate the
pain of another 24hrs on foot with
temperatures touching 47 degrees.
45 miles later we docked for
another 3hrs of feet patching.
Ruth, clearly in severe pain, hadn’t
uttered a single word of complaint.
We had to carry our entire paddle
and swim gear 2 miles up to the
top of the canyon. Nick set off like
a Viagra-smoking Sherpa, laden
with 3 huge bags and 4 paddles.
Halfway up we were passed by
Kiwi team, Port Nelson, with two
wearing nothing whatsoever on
their bottom halves due to major
chaffing issues. I offered them a
sliver of Germoline. They accepted
with thanks – a special moment
between 2 teams ravaged by
conditions.
Transition at the top of the
canyon was our longest and last.
Ruth was advised to spend 6hrs
allowing her feet to recover.
Infection was setting in, with a real
danger of total skin loss on her
toes. We improvised the bike
boxes into 4 comfortable beds
and took a long snooze.
Morning broke, feet were patched
and we left the transition after
9hrs. The biking was a real
pleasure and the abseil through
Gemini Bridge spectacular.
We passed several teams and
were in the top 20 but the
feelgood factor was short-lived.
Halfway through the bike stage,
Ruth had a horrific crash that still
makes me shudder. She casually
remarked “I’m pretty certain my
arm is broken... I can’t ride but I
can push my bike one handed”.
In the shade of a bush we
inspected the arm. We busted
open the radio and Ruth was
whisked off to hospital via
helicopter. She later left the USA
to have her arm pinned in the UK.
As we rode on to Moab minus our
talisgirl, we met a Canadian and
an American who’d lost 2 team
mates. We discussed our options:
Nick was desperate to carry on –
as a new father, it would be his
last major outing this season. Tom
and I had the world champs in
Sweden to consider. In hindsight,
we were right to pull out, but the
emptiness was unpleasant as we
cheered other teams through the
finish. Nick joined the Canadian
and American to enjoy a course
that got better and better.
Would I recommend PQ to other
UK racers? Yes, unquestionably.
The course was vast, beautiful,
brilliantly organised, competitive
yet a realistic challenge to anyone
prepared to dedicate time to it.
The rope sections were better
than anything I’d previously
experienced. On the downside,
very little navigational skill was
needed until the last section.
I‘d like to pay tribute to Ruth who
acquired legendary status and
Nick, who was the consummate
team man through our 4 1 /2 days
on the course. Finally I’d like to
thank our four major sponsors:
