Build Your Own Adventure ...Páramo style
What’s your aspiration?
Biking faster, climbing harder, running further, remoter skiing, pushing
higher, improving performance, seeing what’s beyond...
What does it for you?
Revelling in the sheer physicality of your sport. Pitting your wits
against the elements. Psychological combat and competition
performance requiring tactics and strategy. Embracing
endurance in extreme wilderness
over days or weeks. Fast and furious
adrenaline zone escapades.
The Big Picture
Significant differences that make
Páramo a high performer...
Fitter fabrics
Unique fabrics are what Páramo is
renowned for. More than breathable,
Nikwax Analogy waterproofs are
Directional, ensuring sweat is removed
while the weather is kept out. Only
Analogy removes liquid water as well
as moisture vapour.
This incredible recovery keeps you
more comfortable when you work
hard – and when you stop and rest. In
a traditional system you’d become cold
and uncomfortable as your body heat
struggles to remove the cooling water,
but Páramo Directionality carries on
moving water even as the body cools.
And it works in all conditions –
whatever the humidity or temperature
– when conventional breathable
waterproofs fail.
Analogy fabric is now in a choice of
weights – Analogy Light for when
ounces count, original Analogy for
robust staying power. Both give 100%
Analogy protection and performance.
Keep your clothes on
The longer you wear your clothing the
better! Less changes mean less wasted
time when minutes are precious, less
vulnerability and exposure in extreme
conditions, less hassle in confined
spaces. It’s safer and more practical.
Using Páramo reduces garment
changes:
• With perspiration removal and
more effective insulation you stay
warmer with fewer layers and
less bulkiness;
• Intelligent ventilation allows you
to finetune your temperature
without adjusting layers;
• Soft, supple and quiet fabrics are
comfy enough to wear 24/7;
• Overlayering insulation warms
you quickly without shedding your
outer layers and exposing yourself
to cold and wet.
Been there, done that
All Páramo garments are extensively
tested in the conditions we
recommend them for – so they won’t
let you down at a crucial moment.
Whatever your passion ...preparation is crucial
Accruing knowledge, researching routes, understanding conditions, acquiring
skills, achieving fitness AND choosing your kit, trialling your kit, maintaining
your kit, honing your kit.
Selection of the right gear contributes to a confident mindset – it can help you
through if things get tough, but won’t impinge when things are going well.
Páramo is not afraid to innovate, to be controversial, to do things differently
– giving you a real edge and a chance to push the limits.
Páramo delivers reassurance as well as comfort & performance – both in the
bigger picture and in the finest detail...
The Fine Detail
Small details that add up to garments
that work with you and for you –
safer, easier and more effective...
Fine features
• Zips and drawcords are easily
adjusted with one hand or with
gloves on
• Wired peak hoods move with you,
ensuring your vision isn’t obscured
• Garments can be chosen to be
helmet, harness or rope friendly
• Safe storage and easy access to
maps, GPS, compass and vital
equipment
• Careful articulation allows you
a complete range of movement,
whatever your activity.
Altitude, cold and tiredness can cause
diminished mental and physical
capacity – Páramo garments deliver
practicality of use just when you
need it most.
Togetherness
Our mid and base layers are designed
to work systemically with our outer
garments – vents and access points
are positioned to optimum effect.
And Directionality applies at every
level – ensuring water is removed
from the system very efficiently
from next to skin outwards.
Going on and on and on...
Our fabrics are tough and durable
– they’ll survive what you throw
at them, but are still soft enough
to sleep in!
With Páramo waterproofs
puncture is not the end of the
adventure! You could fill one
with pins, take them out, wear
it in the rain and stay dry.
Field repairs are possible with a
needle and thread – and we offer
a professional repair
service at our UK
workshop if needed.
Simple home aftercare
with Nikwax ensures
a long life – you
can renew the
waterproofing
indefinitely, and
with no membranes,
coatings or taped seams
to deteriorate, and minimal
degradation in UV light,
your Páramo garments
will undoubtedly become
old friends!
Our garments are used routinely
day in, day out in Antarctic Research
stations, in the Alps, in the worst
Scottish winters, in Mountain
Rescue throughout the UK. They’ve
relished expeditions to both Poles,
the Himalayas and the Patagonian
wilderness on countless occasions.
They’ve helped the World Adventure
Racing champions get to the top and
stay there.
Páramo Reversible Baselayers
High performance, wicking baselayers with
a hidden benefit!
Cambia baselayers are reversible – a unique advantage
to give you two levels of cooling from one top
• Smooth side to the skin keeps you cool
• Honeycomb side in offers a lower level of cooling and
exceptional dryness.
Both fabric faces offer excellent wicking and reduce
pooling of perspiration to avoid cold spots.
“
a run to harris
for haris
In 2008 I completed the London 500g of pasta a night,
Marathon – after some vomit energy drinks, the odd pint
issues – and vowed not to run of stout and, of course, Jelly Babies!
another marathon for at least
When the weather turned sour,
five years. Two years later I found
and being in Scotland this
myself on West Sands beach in St
happened frequently, I donned my
Andrews, famous from the Chariots of
Quito waterproof. With its innovative
Fire opening scene, starting a 263 mile
zips and breathability, it kept my
trans-Scottish ordeal which involved
torso dry and relatively sweat-free,
running more than a marathon a
making what could have been a
day for nine days. The reason for this
very uncomfortable 4-5 hours into a
lunacy was the tragic death of my best
more tolerable experience. When I’d
friend Haris Ahmed in March 2010.
received a pair of Páramo Cambia
In his memory I would run to the Isle
Long Boxers I’d thought them a
of Harris, a trip he planned but never
touch goofy. Little did I realise their
had the opportunity to complete. The
brilliance! By wearing them every day
run would raise money for a building
(alternating between my two pairs!)
in his memory at the Malaika Kids
I avoided the inevitable long-distance
orphanage in Tanzania.
runners’ leg chaffage – unfortunately
Supporting me, with a car carrying there was little to be done for my
my stuff was Gareth Mottram. I derriere! The Páramo gear helped
completed the emotionally, physically me keep going in sometimes adverse
and mentally demanding journey in conditions, one of the numerous
46 hours 25 minutes, inspired by Eddie helping hands which allowed me
Izzard having completed an even to achieve what proved a sizeable
more ambitious mission last year. I ran challenge. Thanks Páramo!
The Toughest
Adventure
Race on
Earth
Smock
“A best buy 4 years
ago. It still deserves
that status.” TGO Magazine
Over 5½ days, the Páramo-supported
team of Nicola MacLeod, Bruce Duncan,
Andy Wilson and Mark Humphrey
mountain-biked, trekked and kayaked
over 600km of the world’s toughest
terrain to successfully defend their title in
the ‘Toughest Adventure Race on Earth’,
the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race.
Finishing almost a day ahead of their
nearest rivals, the race organisers were
trying to get everything in place before
the team arrived, something that didn’t
always happen!
The Chilean event traversed the full length
of Tierra Del Fuego. Crossing 300km of
desolate plains into a monster headwind,
the team then faced almost 120km of the
Darwin Range on foot, a huge 2½ day trek
across one of the biggest mountain ranges
in the southern hemisphere. Kayaking
across the Beagle Channel to Isla
Navarino, they finished in Puerto Williams,
the most southerly town in the world.
Adventure racing is a tough sport, and
having the right equipment to get through
the race is vital. The team took specialist
Páramo on the long trek – a sturdier
waterproof than we’d normally carry, but
in this race weight isn’t the biggest factor,
When you want warm,
Directional legwear to
wear alone or as extra
insulation, the Stretch
Pants are ideal. Designed
for ease of movement,
the fleecy inner directs
moisture away from
the skin to keep you
comfortable.
• Elasticated waist with
zip fly
• Zipped internal pocket.
Stretch Pants
256g
Navy
the weather is. Wearing Páramo trousers
and jackets, the team stayed totally dry
throughout the trek, and incredibly warm
even in the sub-zero temperatures endured
at night on high mountain passes. The
vegetation is very sharp and spiky – last
year the team’s legs were shredded – but
with Páramo trousers even the worst
bushes were swept aside, leaving us with
pretty much unscathed legs.
The team attributed a lot of their success to
being kitted out with the best equipment
for the task, and Páramo was certainly
that. Team captain, Nicola, said ‘Keeping
warm and dry in the worst weather that
Patagonia could throw at us was vital for
team morale, enabling us to move at good
speed through the wilderness, something
many rivals couldn’t do.
Thanks Páramo for your
fantastic support, it
made our race so much
more comfortable and
pleasant, ensuring we
raced harder and faster
than all our rivals.”
“
Living a stone’s throw from
a decent ridge of hills, and a few
hours drive from Snowdonia,
I feel blessed that I can enjoy
being active all year. Walking,
climbing, cycle touring, road
riding, mountain biking – I love
them all.
Last year I rode over on the ferry for a
Shetland wedding, and a few days of
wet and windy touring. It’s a unique
experience to be blown UPHILL, but
that’s what happened approaching
Eshaness in the far north of Shetland
Mainland, to be met by towering
cliffs, crashing Atlantic waves, and
VW Beetle-sized rocks thrown over
the cliffs by the sea. Warm summer
temperatures were coupled with
persistent rain and wind, making my
Páramo Velez an absolute godsend.
The Velez is a good year round
companion when I’m mountain
biking too. In winter I’ve layered up
to happily cope with sub-zero snowy
rides, whilst in spring and autumn,
it’s a really versatile protective layer.
This past winter, the Velez
accompanied me on my first full
winter conditions adventure in
Snowdonia. Heading through
Devil’s Kitchen in the Glyderau, the
conditions looked underwhelming
until halfway up, when ice and snow
got more and more prevalent. From
that point I was glad of my ice axes,
crampons and Velez. Although not
strictly a winter jacket, it kept me
warm and dry, allowing me to focus
on getting up a steep snow slope
safely. When we stopped for lunch
at the Castle of the Winds, I slipped
on my Torres Sleeves for additional
warmth, and kept them on for the
descent. Passing an ill-equipped
school group, unstable and cold, I was
glad of my confidence in Páramo.
“
FOR two weeks we lived on
the road, climbing every day.
We’d considered France or Spain
for guaranteed sun, but wanted to
sample the rich heritage of traditional
rock climbing that’s shaped Britain’s
distinctive style. So we loaded the
car and headed for the Peak District’s
gritstone edges.
Grit has something for everyone
– no matter what your level and
experience, there’s a ten-yard-high
lump of rock on a Derbyshire moor to
challenge you mentally and physically
to the utmost. We found plenty.
The first day, the rugged leaning block
of Higgar Tor had us for breakfast.
The day ended as I slumped onto my
gear, utterly exhausted after 20 feet
of climbing that went on for ever as
I worked for every inch of ascent.
Higgar is not a forgiving crag – it spat
out the cam, spinning me into space.
On the smooth quarried faces of
Millstone we had greater success,
with a fine day enjoying the
challenges of cracks scarred by
pegs of a previous generation of
climbers. Dexterity, Regent Street,
Time for Tea – finger lock by finger
lock, we hauled ourselves up,
enjoying every inch.
Next we pitched our strength
against Kilnsey’s huge overhang,
ideal training for Snowdonia,
where unfinished business awaited.
Working my apprenticeship as a
climber in the Welsh hills, a final
climb of those early years ended in
failure when I backed off the classic
hard route of the 1970s, Right Wall.
Walking up to the towering rock
formation of Dinas Cromlech, I felt
sick with apprehension. Unlike a
crack climb, this route wouldn’t
allow me to place protection
whenever I wanted – I’d have to
commit to moves that would be
difficult to reverse, hoping I had
the strength to reach the next slot
where a nut could find purchase.
My fears proved unfounded – with
each move I gained confidence, and
soon was smiling, greedily reaching
for the jugs that led inexorably to
the top. Amazingly, I had not just
climbed it but actually enjoyed the
experience, not retrospectively, but
there and then.
On such a trip, with every available
moment spent outdoors, the best
gear finds its way to the top. My
Quito Jacket was always in my
rucksack or on my back, and I wore
my Cambia T shirt so much that
conventional clothes came home
clean. Some people thought I was
turning it inside out to get another
day out of it!
Directional Waterproofs
Designed for High Mountain use
I heard about Páramo clothing
a decade ago when friends
raved about this revolutionary
Salopettes are ideal to pull a pulk
– warmer plus more comfortable,
reducing friction from the harness.
I tried many pairs, but finding
Paramo’s Aspira salopettes,
I immediately decided they were
unparalleled. Unlike Gore-Tex,
they’re more breathable and offer
greater warmth, dispensing with
unnecessary, voluminous underlayers.
CLIMB Magazine
2010
We encountered a huge temperature
range on the icecap (+20 to -45°C).
The full length zips were really helpful.
Whilst skiing I unzipped them even on
the coldest days, zipping them back
up during rests – an efficient system
to regulate my temperature as it’s so
versatile and fast.
I coupled the Aspira salopettes with
the Ladies’ Aspira Smock – extremely
breathable and simultaneously warm.
It offered great protection from the
wind so, even at -40°C, I wore just a
thermal under. The hood is a good size
and the large pockets very useful to
keep my GPS warm and to hand.
Páramo kept me dry and comfortable
through continuous use during long
days skiing and nights camping on
the ice. I was one of the only members
in the team of eight not to suffer cold
injuries despite my poor circulation.
I’m very grateful to Páramo for
inventing such useful clothing, heartily
encouraging anyone to invest in it.
Capturing the castle
“
My Aspira’s
also featured
on television.
I replied to an
ad on the MLTE website seeking ‘an
active family’ – and we were chosen to
make a Visit Wales advert, promoting
“Proper Holidays” and featuring Wales’s
beautiful landscapes. Six days of filming
featured us exploring Caernarfon Castle,
Portmeirion and Greenwood Park (an
eco-friendly theme park). We camped
at Shell Island and explored beautiful
beaches, pony trekked in Brecon and
climbed at Llangorse activity centre. I
had no hesitation in packing my trusty
Aspira for the shoot. It did a fantastic
job trekking in the glorious landscape
of the Snowdonia National Park and for
bushcraft activities near Portmeirion.
I wear Páramo because it works so
well. It’s kept me dry during absolute
monsoons in the mountains of the
Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak
District and Snowdonia. It kept out
the cold and wind on the Kala Platter
(Himalayas) in -25°C.
My Páramo jackets are great for
climbing – other brands seem to
restrict movement due to their
restrictive fit/ hard shell fabric. The soft
fabric makes Páramo very wearable for
recreational and hard-core mountain
activities – ideal for filming too! My
Páramo baselayers complement the
outers with excellent breathability
and dry very quickly.
The only problem with my Páramo is
that it never seems to age and doesn’t
need replacing. When I need an excuse
to justify new outdoor equipment
Páramo doesn’t give me one – if my
clothing didn’t have such sentimental
value I’d be tempted to sabotage it!
Richard Darkes ”
Page 18
I’ve worn Páramo for the last seven years – the Aspira Jacket,
Velez smock and a range of baselayers see me through my job as
an outdoor activities lecturer. I’ve taken my Aspira to almost every
mountain range in England & Wales and Everest base camp twice,
and it’s off to Mera Peak/ Island Peak in April 2011.
Torres Overlayering Insulation
The practical way to stay warm in
the cold and wet
Overlayers: a better alternative
to conventional layering:
• Select the best garments for your
day’s or week’s activity
• Simply add Torres synthetic
block insulation over the top
when you need it
• Minimum time and hassle
– maximum effect
• Avoid having to remove your
outer layers – losing body heat
and letting in water – just to add
or remove a fleece
• A safer, more reliable option – that
lets you stay mobile and provides
extra security.
BSES Extreme Arctic 2010
The sound of the blizzard
outside was deadened by the
weight of snow on our tent. It
was the early hours of an Arctic
morning and into this blizzard
we now had to venture. We
emerged to find our camp site
unrecognisable. The howling wind
made it hard to stand upright, our
skis had been blown over and they,
with the pulks containing all our
equipment, were completely buried by
deep snow. Worse still, the entrance to
the snow hole where one of our team
had spent the night was completely
obliterated. Our shouts brought no
response, so frantically we started to
dig where we thought he should be.
After a few panic-fuelled minutes
we found the edge of his survival
bag and, amazingly, our friend
fast asleep inside, completely
oblivious to the storm
and our cries.
Page 20
Wet weather friendly:
• Down-like feel and performance
without the drawbacks
• Using synthetic insulation,
Torres garments work just as
well in the wet
• Can be worn over your existing
system – even if it’s wet
• Jacket and smock offer full
head protection
• Lightweight but robust
and durable
• Can be compressed in a pack
without damage
• Can be washed and reproofed
in a washing machine.
It was in such moments – when
challenging conditions of our 2 month
BSES Svalbard expedition intensified
further – that I was so grateful for my
Páramo. Most people’s equipment kept
them reasonably warm and relatively
dry but, without fail, I wasn’t only
warm and dry but comfortable too.
Mere minutes after falling through the
ice into the freezing river, my Torres
Trousers and Smock had dried off and
were keeping me warm whilst my
team mates had to change out of their
stubbornly wet clothes. My favourite,
most versatile piece of equipment
was the Aspira trousers. The drop seat
meant I was the only girl without
chilblains. The padded knees and
bottom were really
hard wearing, so
despite numerous
falls and
glissades down
mountains
Torres Sleeves
“I’ve made good use of the
sleeves whilst rock climbing.
The air temperatures have been
very cold and in the wind it has
been difficult to keep the fingers
warm enough to feel the holds
properly. The Torres sleeves have
made a difference. It is good not
to have too much bulky clothing
around the upper body because it
makes you feel restricted in your
movements and puffs out to limit
vision of the nuts and krabs on
your harness. With the sleeves,
I put them on at the start of
the climb and just forget they
are there. Keeping my limbs warm
by wearing the stretch pants
under my trousers and the Torres
sleeves, I can wear less bulky
clothing on my upper body and
still feel comfortable.”
Simple but very innovative solution
to quickly achieving warmth and
maintaining dexterity in the hands.
This pioneering development recognises
the crucial role that the arms play in the
body’s temperature control. The insulated
sleeves can be speedily pulled on over any
baselayer or shell, without removing a
pack, and you immediately feel the benefit.
they’re as good as new. In fact, when
practising ice axe arrests the reinforced
bottom created enough friction to make
the ice axe redundant!
Two months in a tent in the Arctic
could test any friendship – one aspect
of my trip where I hadn’t imagined
Páramo was going to help. However,
after six weeks without washing, the
loan of a Cambia baselayer to a friend
helped our tent smell nicer and brought
Páramo a new convert. I feel privileged
to have experienced this amazing,
fragile environment first hand; in it
I certainly made friends for life – not
least with my Páramo!
”
Dave Rogers,
Ethical
Trekking?
The stove was dying down, and the
growing cold reminded us we were
at 4500m in the Nepalese Himalaya,
when there was a sudden knock on
the door. Chhewang Sherpa peered in:
“Sick porter! Quickly!” All thoughts
of bed receded as I looked into the
frightened face of a 20 year old
porter struggling for breath. He’d
been carried 6km on a colleague’s
back from Gokyo, to the Community
Action Nepal – International Porter
Protection Group (IPPG) rescue post
in Machermo village where I was a
volunteer doctor. A rapid examination
– he was suffering from high
altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE),
a potentially fatal condition when
the patient’s lungs fill up with water
causing them, quite literally, to drown
in their own body fluid.
He showed some improvement with
oxygen treatment, but every time we
removed the mask the oxygen levels
in his blood dropped to dangerously
low levels, despite drugs to reverse
the fluid leak in his lungs. It would
be a long night and one which the
porter would spend in a hyperbaric
bag – a PVC bag in which pressure
can be increased by a foot pump
to mimic descent, the most reliable
treatment for any altitude illness.
As the first light of dawn painted
the summits of the towering snow
peaks that surround Machermo, the
porter’s condition was stabilising
enough for transfer to the Hillary Trust
Hospital at Khunde, 600m lower. A
Western trekker with HAPE would fly
to Kathmandu by helicopter, but very
few trekking companies provide this
for their porters. So later that morning
the weak, but improved, porter
departed for Khunde on horseback.
This porter was lucky. His expedition
leader recognised he was seriously
ill and got him to our rescue post
to receive life-saving treatment. The
trekking company was prepared to
pay for his evacuation to Khunde.
Other porters are not so fortunate and
are abandoned by their groups when
they fall ill. Each year in Nepal, porters
die unnecessarily so Western visitors
can enjoy their ‘holidays of a lifetime’
in comfort. These visitors marvel at
the strength of porters toiling under
the weight of several trekkers’ bags
wearing flimsy, inadequate clothing
and only plimsolls on their feet.
Many misconceptions surround
mountain porters in Nepal. The
majority come from the lowlands and
are as susceptible to altitude illness,
hypothermia and frostbite as any
Westerner. A combination of cultural
beliefs and the fear that admitting
to being unwell will prejudice their
future employment, frequently results
in porters concealing illness. The
porters’ smiling faces suggest that
they enjoy the challenge of their
heavy loads. They do not. They work
under such appalling conditions
because it’s the only way of earning
money to feed their families and
educate their children.
The welfare of mountain porters
would improve overnight if those of
us who visit Nepal took ownership of
the problem and insisted on our porters
being treated as we expect to be.
Anyone using a commercial company
to trek or climb in Nepal should check
the guidelines at ippg.net and ensure
they’re followed – if not, take your
business elsewhere.
World
class
rescue
Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) is one of 50+
mountain rescue teams (MRTs) in England & Wales – all registered
charities funded by public donations and staffed by
volunteers who give up spare time, sleep time and
work time to provide a free service to people in
distress in rough terrain and rivers. Their
reward is the ethos of Mountain
Rescue, “helping our fellow
mountaineers on the
mountains”.
“
Ogwen team covers Northern
Snowdonia from the moonscape of the
Glyder range to Carneddau’s barren
summits. Ogwen assist Llanberis MRT,
busy on the Snowdon honey pot, and
NEWSAR with extended searches on
the Clwydian hills or Berwyns.
Team members are all mountaineers
by sport. But practising that sport is
increasingly difficult due to the high
demands on team members. Until
recently, Ogwen’s 50+ team members
dealt with about 65 incidents per
annum, mostly at weekends. Last
year, Ogwen attended 133 incidents;
in 2010, add a further 20 or more...
Increased weekday call outs put a
strain on self-employed members
and long-suffering employers.
People’s expectations are high. When
they make that 999 call, they expect
(and receive) a professional Emergency
Service - for free! A seriously injured
casualty may be hours from hospital
treatment due to location, time of day
or weather. Such casualties are cared
for by volunteers trained in their own
time to a high standard of Casualty
Care (not just First Aid). The crag fast
or injured climber on the rock face
is dependent on volunteers who’ve
trained to world standards in
technical rope rescue, with a 5 day
intensive course. The stranded paddler
clinging to a rock in swift water will
be rescued by volunteers who’ve
attended a 4 day world-standard
course. Worried relatives of a missing
person can be reassured that those
running the search have attended
a 5 day international Search
Management course.
Teams operate in all weathers, any
time of day or night. It is crucial that
they are properly clothed.
Clothing will be tested in
the extremes of British
weather. It has to be
good, very good.
