Hi everyone!
My name is María. I would like to share my experience as an international student and mentor to
improve the service offered to our Erasmus students at ETSIA . I really hope you find this brief
guide helpful. If this is the case, don´t hesitate to offer me a coffee whenever you see me!
Welcome to Spain, land of “tapas”, sun, beautiful people, and the highest density of bars per square
meter in the world! If your goal as an Erasmus student is to meet new exciting people and have fun,
believe me, you are in the right city. If your goal is to find a challenging scientific environment to
improve your skills, believe me, you are in the right College.
SOME ACADEMIC ASPECTS
I´m not going to lie to you, ETSIA is not an easy College. The sooner you organize your studies
plan, the more probabilities you will have to succeed. The first weeks you will be pretty busy
looking for a house, knowing the city and its public transportation system…During this period of
time, I strongly recommend you to cover the next academic aspects as soon as possible:
1. STUDIES PLAN: This is going to determine how much free time you will have.
You can´t attend classes or buy books if you don´t know your studies plan. It takes a long
time to coordinate your home College and ETSIA about your studies plan, so work on it
even before you land in Madrid. First of all, talk with you r mentor about the difficulty and
length of your classes. You don´t want to have a huge load of work and you don´t want to
lose a whole year with only easy classes. Try to find a balance. For example, if your major
is Fluid Mechanics, you are going to enjoy this class. If not, you have to know that Fluid
Mechanics is a very tough class and requires a lot of effort and time.
2. NOTES: Every College has its tricks to pass the exams. Sometimes you think that it
is enough just with attending classes and reading books. In ETSIA is not like that. You must
have notes and exams from previous years. Ask your mentor and classmates about a good
collection of notes and exams to print. A good idea is to visit “Delegación de Alumnos”,
located on the first floor of ETSIA building. These people are pretty cool. They can give
you advice about good notes to have.
3. CLASS: Attend class. Don´t discourage yourself if you don´t understand your
Professor. The 90% of your Spanish native classmates don´t understand him neither. It is
very important that you show interest, so arrange appointments with your professors to solve
doubts. You are a foreign student and you have more difficulties to follow the class but
don´t expect a different treat in the finals. Sometimes you will have it, sometimes you
won´t. Try to interact with your classmates, they can help you to study, get notes, improve
your Spanish, have fun…so just smile and talk with them.
