SUPPORTING FAMILIES AND FOUNDATIONS
FAMILY FOUNDATIONS ARE
AN IMPORTANT PART OF
THE PHILANTHROPIC
LANDSCAPE and The Community Foundation works
in multiple ways to support family philanthropy. The Foundation offers
guidance on grantmaking strategies and practices, and can help
families transition philanthropy from one generation to the next.
In 2012, two major Jacksonville family foundations made decisions
about their philanthropy that affirmed the value of partnering with The
Community Foundation.
J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver, former owners of the Jacksonville
Jaguars and among the community’s leading philanthropists,
converted their family foundation — the Weaver Family Foundation
— into a donor advised fund at The Community Foundation.
Then, the Chartrand family decided to conduct all of The Chartrand
Foundation’s grantmaking through The Community Foundation.
In both cases, the donors will continue to direct and advise
their philanthropy, but the mechanics will be handled by The
Community Foundation.
“Wayne and I want to take this time in our lives to enjoy our family,
relax and travel, not to worry about managing a private foundation,”
Delores Barr Weaver said. “We have complete confidence in The
Community Foundation and its stewardship, and know that the staff
will provide the services we need to continue our philanthropy in
Jacksonville and beyond.”
The Weavers and the Chartrands were not the first donors to
recognize the benefits of partnering with The Community Foundation.
In 2005, a group of donors in Southeast Georgia wanted to establish
a community foundation and launched an affiliate fund of The
Community Foundation. Once they received their nonprofit
designation from the IRS, they established the Communities of
Coastal Georgia Foundation, but continued to use The Community
Foundation to provide back office support. >
