The Florida Blue Foundation has relied on The Community Foundation staff’s expertise in various ways for more than a decade. For family philanthropy, however, The Community Foundation brings unique assets to the table. A PERSONAL FUND FOR PERSONAL PHILANTHROPY Among the highlights of 2012 was the decision by Delores Barr Weaver to establish a donor advised fund at The Community Foundation with a gift of $50 million. The decision further reflected the confidence placed in The Community Foundation by the Weavers. With the gift, the Delores Barr Weaver Fund became the largest single fund at The Community Foundation. Mrs. Weaver’s gift, announced in November, ranks among the largest charitable gifts ever made to any Jacksonville-based institution, and is the largest gift to The Community Foundation in its 48-year history. Coupled with the conversion of the Weaver Family Foundation, the Weaver’s gifts to The Community Foundation ranked them as the 17th largest donors in the United States for 2012, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Page 12 “The Chartrand family chose to work with The Community Foundation because of its deep experience as a community grantmaker, its strong values that respect the intent of the donor and its excellent reputation as a fiduciary agent,” the family said. “We have the flexibility to focus on our philanthropy and the ways in which it can best benefit the community, secure in the knowledge that our interests are both respected and represented.” For the DuBow family, The Community Foundation has enhanced their family philanthropy in different ways. The family established a private foundation in 1988 and, in 1997, established a sizable donor advised fund at The Community Foundation. Fifteen years later, both entities remain robust and active. Family patriarch Lawrence DuBow says that the family foundation gives his children and grandchildren hands on experience in managing philanthropy. Meetings are very structured, board books are distributed in advance with proposals and historical information, and discussions are lively. “I don’t want my children and grandchildren to lose the hands-on experiences,” DuBow said. “You’ve got to taste it and touch it and smell it.” At the same time, DuBow is a strong supporter of The Community Foundation. He sees the Donor Advised Fund as another philanthropic learning experience for his family as well as a way to support an important community institution. “I think it is important that we support The Community Foundation. What they do is extremely important — it teaches philanthropy.” “I learned more about the theory of philanthropy [as a trustee of The Community Foundation] and about a lot of agencies in the city, and that was very helpful.” Whether executing philanthropy on behalf of a family or being part of a family’s larger philanthropic strategy, The Community Foundation has proven itself a strong partner.
