THE Authority has recently come under
criticism from some quarters in relation to the
procedures at steward’s hearings.
The Rules of Greyhound Racing do not
specifically cover the procedures, but
stewards, and any person in authority, are
bound by the rules of natural justice in
proceedings in which a decision may be made
that may adversely affect someone.
Natural justice is about the concept of
fairness encapsulated in an old adage: justice
should be done and be seen to be done.
In procedural terms, a decision maker
should not only act in good faith and without
bias, but also should grant a hearing to any
person whose interests will be affected by the
exercise of that decision before the decision
is made.
There are two primary rules underlying
the concept of natural justice.
1 audi alteram partem - (“hear the other
side”) that is, a person whose interests will
be affected by the decision should be given a
hearing before that decision is made.
2 Nemo debet esse judex in propria sua
causa - (“no one shall be judged in his own
case”) that is, the decision maker must be
unbiased.
If a person has preconceived opinions, a
vested interest or personal involvement in a
matter they should not attempt to settle that
matter.
Conventionally, a person is expected to
declare any interest and step aside if it could
suggested that the decision was arrived at for
reasons other than the merits of the case.
The rules of procedural fairness required
by these primary rules must be observed:
1 The respondent must be given full
details of the accusations.
That is, the factual issues and allegations
to be examined and discussed should be
specified in sufficient detail to enable
adequate preparation of a defence and a
reasonable opportunity of adequate
refutation.
2 Relevant documents used in judgment
on a case must be disclosed to both parties.
GRA Chairman
Any inspection of
our complex is welcome
(phone for appointment). Track Distances
300m and 520m. Sand Surface.
New rearing yards 200m long
3 Decisions to admit or exclude evidence
should be based on whether it is relevant,
reliable and logically valid, capable of being
tested in some form.
4 There should not be undue delay in
hearing the matter. (If a complainant/
respondent fails to appear on a number of
occasions the case might be determined on
the evidence of the party appearing).
5 Notice of a hearing should be serviced
on the parties with reasonable time to enable
them to prepare their case. The time and place
must be clearly specified.
6 Unless there are exceptional
circumstances, one side should not be heard
in the absence of the other.
7 Each party should be given the
opportunity to state their case adequately.
8 Each party should be given the
opportunity to correct or contradict any
statement prejudicial to their case.
9 Witnesses, if any, should be examined
or questioned and allowed to be questioned
by the other party. Adequate time should be
allowed for this “cross-examination”.
10 If there are different allegations by
different complainants against the same
respondent in the same subject area, it may
be a breach of procedural fairness to hear the
evidence or allegations together rather than
separately as one may unreasonably influence
the other.
It is also improper in such a case to inform
the complainants of the nature or details of
each other’s complaints.
It is hoped that this addresses the issues
that have been complained about.
I AM interested in the views of the
industry on the introduction of a Queenslandbred
incentive scheme.
Already there are incentives provided to
the owners and breeders of Queensland-bred
winners of major races and Young Guns.
The NSW industry is currently
considering the question and has called for
submissions.
The costs associated with services and
rearing appears to be deterring many in the
industry from breeding and it is time to look
at what incentives might be appropriate to
encourage participants. I would appreciate
your views.
THE Directors’ meeting of Greyhounds
Australasia was held at Parklands on March
2. All were very impressed with the Parklands
complex and very complimentary of it and
the hospitality they were shown.
I thank Bob McCluskey and Graeme Jupp
of the Gold Coast Club and Peter Crawford
and his staff at the Parklands Gold Coast Trust
for their assistance in putting the meeting
THE GRA and the Harness Board have
commissioned a strategic evaluation study
for the future of the Albion Park Raceway
site.
Two companies, Sinclair, Knight, Mertz
(SKM) and McKerral Lynch Design (ML
Design) have been commissioned to look
into two possibilities for the site.
One is to stay and re-develop the
complex, or the other is to determine a
valuation of the site for possible sale and
relocation.
The proposal or otherwise is to be
completed by the end of June.
Redevelopment options for the site must
include the generation of additional income
apart from what is brought in by the two
racing codes i.e. commercial and residential
developments on the site.
Other options may include a seven-day
a week licensed club, and further sporting
organisations etc.
The Albion precinct is currently under
review by the Brisbane City Council and
the Raceway development or otherwise is
being incorporated with the BCC’s review.
Albion Park, with such a huge land area,
is one of the major stakeholders in the BCC
review.
THE GRA would like to thank owner
Clint Wall for allowing his Just The Best-
Victory Moss pup to be named
“Queensland Rules”.
The dog’s progress will be followed by
Channel 10’s Australian Football program
“Queensland Rules”.
Presenter Bill McDonald has informed
the GRA that the TV show will “punt” the
dog whenever it starts and all proceeds will
go to a charity.
Wall has been a great supporter of
greyhound racing in this state, and
Queensland Rules is being trained by Tony
Zammit.
Already Channel 10 has taken footage
of the dog trialling at Albion Park for
inclusion in their weekly program.
greyhound racing, with a number of
Broncos players and supporters recently
taking ownership of a dog.
THE Board of Greyhounds Australasia
officially adopted the new Breeding/
Registration Rules in March.
The Queensland Greyhound Racing
Authority adopted the new rules at the same
time.
The rules were adopted as urgent to
ensure consistency across the states.
These rules and the revised National
Racing Rules will be advertised in the near
future for industry consultation.
The new rules allow a registered stud
dog to serve 54 Australia/New Zealand
registered bitches per quarter and the
splitting of semen providing each split
contains a certified 200 million forwardly
motile, normal, live sperm taken at the time
of collection.
A stud dog will still ONLY be permitted
to a maximum of (14) collections per
month.
A full copy of these rules are available
on the website or by contacting the
Authority.
THE GRA congratulates employee
Tanya Heir who was married early in
March to Peter McDonald.
As from March 4 new Breeding/
Registration rules apply.
The new rules are available on our
web site or from the Authority.
The highlight of these new rules are:
A registered stud dog is allowed 14
(fourteen) collections per month.
A registered stud dog is allowed 54
(fifty-four) services a quarter to
Australian & New Zealand registered
Registrar
bitches.
Breeding units exported will not be
included in the number of bitches
recorded as being served by a stud sire.
(Breeding units exported, must be
from registered collections.)
A return service to a bitch that has at
her previous service to that stud sire
being the last such service of any type to
the bitch, failed to conceive to that stud
sire is not counted in the 54 (fifty-four)
per quarter.
The splitting of semen is allowed
providing each split contains a certified
200 million forwardly motile, normal,
live sperm taken at the time of collection.
Each split will be known as a
breeding unit.
Each breeding unit will be labelled
with the same draw number, but each
split will be allocated an alpha.
Breeding Units may be sold
separately.
Artificial insemination of bitches by
fresh, chilled or frozen semen must be
carried out by approved persons
registered with the GRA.
A dog standing at stud in Queensland
must be registered with the GRA as a
stud sire and also registered as a stud
sire under the AI program.
These rules are not retrospective.
Semen drawn prior to March 4
cannot be split or sold separately.
(The total draw is to be used for the
insemination of 1 (one) bitch and/or sold
as one draw.)
Now that's
interesting
A Pottawattamie County (US) jury
has returned a verdict against
Bluffs Run Greyhound Park and
Casino for failing to provide a safe
racetrack for use by racing
greyhounds.
The Jury’s verdict awarded Art and
Bev Yates and the Yates Kennel
$US235,282 for damages done to
their greyhounds during the 2000
racing season.
John Gaines, the man behind the
formation of the Breeders Cup
thoroughbred day in the US, was
acerbic in his criticism of some
thoroughbred industry leaders.
He chided the industry for being
stingy with marketing dollars,
saying the “Putt-Putt Golfing
Association spends more money on
advertising than the $25 billion
racing and breeding industry”.
IF you are looking at giving
greyhound training a try, start up a
kiosk first ... within a few years
you’ll have 50 dogs in work.
That’s exactly what former WA pair David
and Christine Robartson did.
David had managed a restaurant in Perth
in the late 70s, but packed his family up and
moved it to Mandurah just before a new
greyhound track was built there in 1979.
“The state government had given the club
a certain amount of money to build the
complex, but much of the funds had to be
raised by the club itself,” said David. “I was
working for Solahart at the time.”
Robartson was at the track during
building, asked about catering facilities, and
was told there was none. He and Christine
offered to build a kiosk if they could be given
the catering rights for four years, and that’s
what happened.
“The club is now one of the best in the
country,” said Robartson.
Attending race meetings every week for
four years, greyhound racing was always
going to impact on David and Christine ...
but even they could not foresee just how
much.
“We couldn’t help but be bitten by
greyhound racing. We bought a couple of
dogs and got them trained and had success
immediately,” said David.
Diamond Planet was their first and it won
several races. Dancing Eagle followed and it
won 12 mostly over the distance.
Joe Panetta was training for the
Robartsons. He prepared Sam’s Spur to win
the Mandurah Cup for them and Diamond
Planet won the Young Stars at Cannington.
It wasn’t long before David was on the
committee at Mandurah. He stayed there for
nine years and for four years was on a
Committee.
It wasn’t long
before David and
Christine wanted to
give training a try. They
bought five acres at
Mandurah and set up
the facilities they
needed. “It all grew from there.”
Within 10 years the Robartsons had 50
dogs in training.
“There was a lack of professional trainers
in WA at the time, and at our peak we hardly
had a dog of our own in
training,” said David. “We
built a bigger shed on the
property, and then another
shed.”
The Robartsons were
always in the top three or
four on the trainers
premiership, this despite
still holding down a full
time job.
Christine was the
backbone of the operation
sending their children
Jodie and Todd off to
school and then doing the
million and one things that
need to be done around a
kennel.
It was heady times for
the kennel. Wit’s End
was one of the top
sprinters in the state earning a Topgun
nomination and winning the WA Sprint
Championship.
David stretched him out to a distance and
he led clearly for home in an Association Cup
final at Wentworth Park only to crack a hock
David Robartson believes a subtle change to the grading
system in Queensland is needed. He believes a greyhound
should drop a grade after three unplaced runs, even if it is
placed in between those runs. He says this grading change
would help Queensland just as much as it did WA. “It stops
dogs getting to a mark and not being able to get back.”
and finish second to Groovy Dancer.
The kennel won the Mandurah Cup three
times, the WA Derby and Young Stars, and
took Dreamy Bill (a litter brother to Worth
Doing) to third in a Perth Cup final.
high hopes for.
“He had not raced before we got him from
NSW, but won nine straight with him and in
all he won about 25 to 30 races.”
Greyhound racing in WA went through
some lean times in the late 80s with
nomination fees introduced, no prizemoney
increases etc. “It wasn’t until Trevor Smith
took over that he got the industry back on its
feet over there, and then Ken Norquay arrived
to take it to the heights of today,” said David.
But at the same time, greyhound racing
was becoming difficult for the Robartsons.
The kids were getting older and running
around with them took much more time.
By the 90s Christine was working and
David was at home doing the dogs. “The offer
of jobs for both of us came up at Kalgoolie
and we decided to get out of greyhounds and
head there for a few years,” said David. “We
Let's
get a
dog ...
or 50
gave it a lot of thought and decided we wanted
a break from the dogs.”
The dogs were farmed out to other
trainers, the Robartsons kept potential
broodbitches they owned and packed up and
headed to Kalgoolie.
“It was wonderful in Kalgoolie, but it’s a
town you can only stay a few years in. We
went to a completely different life,” said
David. “I put on 15 kilos because we were
not doing much. Once you had mowed the
lawn, what else did you do?”
After four years the Robartsons were
ready to move from Kalgoolie. David missed
greyhounds.
“I had taken Abilene to the Gabba in
Brisbane in 1985 for a Gold Cup and loved
the city. I had done nine months in Brisbane
when I was 19 during National Service.”
Their daughter had moved to Gladstone
by then and the Robartsons made a quick
decision that Queensland was for them. They
came for a holiday, looking around and liked
the place ... they’ve been here for three years.
John and Anne Farrell were friends from
WA who had already made the move to
Queensland. David sent the couple some
broodbitches.
They bought the property formerly owned
by Howard Grey and left it idle for six months
while they planned the shift. In the meantime
the Farrells won the Eric Thompson with their
bitch Double Guess.
Despite the best intentions to get straight
back into training and make an impact, the
Robartsons were stopped in their tracks.
“We had got out of the way of things, and
we were in a new environment,” said David.
“Where do we buy meat, how do we get to
tracks, trial tracks, what’s a good time for a
pup slipping post to post at Albion Park?
“We had to learn all those things.”
Robartson found the people in greyhound
racing were nice ... sometimes too nice.
“I’d ask if a time one of my pups had
trialled was good or not and most often would
be told it was good. People would not want
to hurt your feelings. I needed to know for
certain, but often you couldn’t get that info.”
It took the pair 12 months to become
Queenslanders.
Never Guess and New Guess, Timmy
Says etc have all given David and Christine
success. New Guess, a daughter of Brett Lee
and David’s WA Oaks winner Roxy Reason,
is their breeding future.
They have Surf Lorian-Roxy Reason pups
just born, a number of Lindale Blue pups
broken in well, and Double Guess has a litter
to Collision. Roxy Reason and her sister
Roshanna Reason have litters to Lindale Blue.
The future is rosy according to David and
Christine. They are well accepted in the
greyhound racing community here. “We love
it here.”
Miss Ross powers to an Ipswich victory.
DAVID BRASCH
SOMEONE recently told Radio 4TAB
racecaller Steve Hawkins he was lucky to get
a dog like Miss Ross.
Hawkins reckons it has cost him $150,000
to get that lucky.
That’s what he has spent on some pretty
slow horses and just as equally pedestrian
greyhounds until he decided to chase down
Sarah Pringle and her partner Andrew
Monaghan some months ago in a bid to buy a
ready-made star.
Miss Ross (by Token Prince) is from the
second litter of top broodbitch Lucky Penna.
Sarah and Andrew had educated the bitch and
sold her to Hawkins ready to go.
To time of writing the bitch has won eight
races, three at Albion Park, four at Ipswich
and one at the Gold Coast and high hopes are
held for her as a potential stayer.
Steve, his wife Kate, and three daughters
Alexandra, 9, Jessica, 8, and Lauryn, 6, are
easily her biggest fans, but she has a bigger
fan base than just the Hawkins family.
Miss Ross is named after Jessica’s teacher
of last year Lisa Ross.
“It’s amazing how the school has adopted
this dog,” said Hawkins. “So much so that
the video of her wins gets shown around each
classroom, and Tony Brett (Miss Ross’
trainer) has even promised to take the dog to
school for ‘show and tell’.”
Hawkins, 35, is a country boy who has
grown up in a racing family and always been
a keen caller even though he told “a white
lie” to get his first gig of racecalling.
“I was born in Taree but got my first job
in radio in 1987 at Gunnedah doing DJ work,”
he said. “I went to my first dog meeting at
Gunnedah and told the white lie that I had
been calling dogs before”
As things would work out, Steve headed
to Gunnedah the following week and the oncourse
racecaller had to be rushed to hospital
that day. “I got the gig,” he said and stayed
calling Gunnedah dogs for the next year.
He moved to Tamworth for 12 months
after that working for 2GM and did a bit of
TV work as well “in my thinner and better
looking days”.
A year stint at home with 2RE at Taree
saw him branch out to dog and trot calling
even though he was keen to take on gallopers
and rugby league calling.
“By 1990 I decided to leave radio, so I
worked in a bottle shop for six months until a
guy called Paul Stanley came into the shop
one day and said I should put in for a job at
Grafton.”
The Grafton radio station was looking for
a program manager to be a race co-ordinator
and with the possibility to call dogs, horses
and sport.
“Eventually I got all the calling duties, but
it wasn’t as quickly as I initially thought,” said
Steve. “It was in the days when the Grafton
dog carnival was huge.
“I eventually followed racecallers like
Steve
Hawkins
Terry Bailey, Terry Spargo and David Fowler
into the job of calling Grafton races. It was
1994.”
He also took over calling rugby league at
that time and won three Rawards the radio
industry’s equivalent of TV’s Logies.
By 1998 he was just about ready for
another move. This time Terry Bailey helped
bring him north to Queensland.
“Terry had put in for a job in Sydney, and
when he got that position, there was a vacancy
at 4TAB. I was a million to one to get the
job, but got it.”
Steve and his family are settled at Manly
in Brisbane.
While working for 4TAB calling Gold
Coast dogs and horses each week, he also has
his own marketing company selling
advertising for radio and Turf Monthly
magazine.
He has established a bloodstock company
and brokers deals for thoroughbreds to be sold
as show horses and hacks. He has just opened
an office at Wynnum to cope with the everincreasing
demands of his business life.
“I’ve owned horses all my life and they
have been very costly,” he said. “I had a horse
with Alan Bailey and it looked very
promising, until it damaged a tendon and that
ended its career.
“I said ‘no more’ to the horses. I’d spent
$150,000 on them to that time, some owning
myself, a lot in syndicates.”
Hawkins reasoned he needed a interest
that his family could become involved in and
greyhound racing filled that perfectly.
“I believe horse racing is no longer a
family entertainment, but greyhound racing
really is,” he said.
His first dog was bought some years ago.
“I paid $500 over the phone for it,” he said.
“It came back to us after 100m. It was a very
quick learning curve.”
Since then he has dealt with the experts,
had dogs with Margaret Quarrell, John
Edwards and now Tony Brett.
“I was having a conversation with Sarah
Pringle, something to do with work, and I
asked her about buying a dog from their
kennel.
“That’s where Miss Ross came from.
Sarah and Andrew were fantastic. They kept
to their promise to sell me one when they
knew this bitch had broken in well.
“I had become mates with Tony Brett by
that time and Sarah and Andrew had no
Mighty Miss has
Steve hooked
qualms about me giving Miss Ross to Tony
to train.”
Steve originally raced a couple of dogs
with Bob Lambert, a great friend of the Brett
family. “One was Althorpe Miss, a daughter
of Mum’s Gift, who was trained by Bevan
and Elaine Williamson.
“I suppose it is the Williamsons who
originally got us hooked on greyhounds. They
are fantastic because they certainly call a
spade a spade in this industry.”
Tony's made
John Harvey and
Tony Jeffrey.
dog punting a
winning habit
By DAVID BRASCH
AS a retired schoolteacher, Tony
Jeffrey knows the importance of homework.
And he makes sure his homework is up
to date, every week. Tony is an avid
greyhound punter ... only on Albion Park,
generally concentrating on Thursday night
meetings.
After 22 years punting on greyhounds,
he reckons he well in front. Mates like John
Harvey totally agree.
Jeffrey, 66, has been a punter all his
life, 15 years on the gallopers, 10 years on
the trotters and for the past 22 on
greyhounds.
“The dogs are more consistent.”
But he doesn’t go into it half hearted
like the majority of punters. Tony has two
decades of facts and figures on every dog to
race around the Gabba and now Albion
Park to back up his judgment.
Tony’s a first section man, cannot stress
enough the importance of weight variations
for dogs, and never misses watching the
videos of every race.
“I do it for two reasons,” Tony told The
Journal. “Firstly, I’m a mathematical
person, and secondly for the social aspect.
“I’m a $1 each way punter, but there are
plenty of people wanting my tips each
Thursday night.”
Tony calls the A4 notepads in which he
keeps all his records, his “Bible”.
“I have codes I keep on each dog, the
way they jump, which way they head to the
first turn, their sectionals from every start at
Albion Park, and their weights.
“I also have six four-hour videos which
contain 60 weeks of Albion Park on a
Monday night and 100 weeks of Albion
Park on a Thursday night.”
It takes Tony 10 hours a week to come
up with his Thursday night selections ... but
he is rarely wrong.
“I was a member at the Gabba, but since
that closed we moved on a Thursday night
to the QEII club and now Rochdale Rovers
Soccer Club,” he said. He has a huge
following of punters waiting on his every
tips each week.
Tony bets on every race on a Thursday
night. He admits to being a disciplined
punter and calls his “homework” a hobby.
“Sectionals are all important,” he said.
“Although dogs are not always consistent
with their first sections.”
The first section is the only one he
concerns himself with. He says when
making his punting choices, he only every
goes for a dog with consistent sectionals.
“Take for instance Markaboy’s Lad,” he
said. “From box one the dog always jumps,
but put him in any other box and he never
jumps.”
He says he is right in eight out of 10
races in his selection of who will lead in
each race at Albion Park on a Thursday
night.
“I ignore form from provincial tracks,”
he says. “It’s horses for courses at Albion
Park.
“And I never follow prices. It doesn’t
worry me what price a dog is assessed at. If
it comes up best on my selection criteria,
then I back it.”
He says Thursday night is the best night
on which to bet. He never bets on Fridays.
“I cannot understand why the club runs
those Young Guns races with excellent
fields on a Friday afternoon. The least they
could do is run the final on a Thursday
night.”
Of weights, he is adamant a dog going
down in weight is a better chance than one
going up in weight. He would like to see the
weight changes on race nights made
available to punters through the Brisbane
Club’s website.
He loves to bet on 600m races despite
its poor start position on a bend. “I believe
the one box at the 600m start is the best
only if the dog is an excellent beginner,” he
said. “But I like to bet on dogs that are
quick beginners coming out of the three,
four or five over 600m. That’s why I loved
to bet on 420m races at the Gabba. The best
beginner ALWAYS won.
“But you must have the information on
how a dog behaves in the run to the first
turn. That’s difficult when 710m races are
run because we have no access to how a
dog performs in the run to the first turn.”
He only ever judges a dog on its past
four starts at Albion Park.
“And I never look at who is training a
dog.”
An avid racegoer when the Gabba was
operating, Tony says the character went out
of greyhound racing when the shift came to
Albion Park. “It’s too far away.”
He plumps for Flying Amy as the best
he’s ever seen, better even that Bogie Leigh
despite their similar brilliant first sections.
He also points out that younger dogs
perform best around Albion Park. “I don’t
understand why some people continue to
race some of those old dogs,” he said.
And a tip for potential owners. “Only
ever buy a young greyhound that has a fast
first sectional.”
Tony listens to what he preaches ... and
keeps winning.
FOR so long Mike O’Byrne dominated the greyhound training ranks in Queensland. He had any number of top class
gallopers, won numerous big races, trainer’s premierships galore and was a household name in the industry. But he
tossed it all in back in 1994. Journal Editor DAVID BRASCH catches up with Mike O’Byrne.
O'Byrne tempted
to come back
Mike O'Byrne and his
chief kennel cliet Ham
Hillier with their star
galloper Indian Town.
to training
MIKE O’Byrne has been asked by a
close friend, a major player in the
thoroughbred industry, to take up training
greyhounds again.
And talking to O’Byrne is becomes
quickly obvious while he might not be
about to rush back into the industry, he also
hasn’t ruled it out.
O’Byrne, 63, has not trained a dog since
1994 when he and wife Jeanette leased, and
eventually sold, their Park Ridge training
complex and moved permanently to
Murgon a township of 5500 just 44km from
Kingaroy and a little more than two hours
to Brisbane.
Jeanette had suffered from a severe bout
of glandular fever, Mike’s No 1 clients
Ham and Margaret Hillier were out of the
industry, and it was “time to wind down”.
“I was never a fan of sand track racing,
and when Albion Park opened in 1992 we
kept going for a couple of years but the
time came ...,” he said.
By this time O’Byrne had already
established a used car yard in Murgon.
“My brother-in-law Jim Scott is a
mechanic and he had gone to Murgon to
lease a mechanic’s bay there,” said Mike.
“Jim rang to say there was a disused car
yard nearby.”
O’Byrne had been a used car salesman
when he and Jeanette were married in 1972,
working for UK Motors at the Gabba. In
1974 he decided to get a dog or two and by
1975 was on his way to becoming No 1 in
the state.
“Jeanette and I were still at Park
Ridge,” said Mike. “I bought a car, got Jim
to work on it, and we sold it at Murgon in a
week. I sent Jim another and the same
happened, it went in a week.”
The yard Jim found in Murgon had been
closed for 18 months. In September 1993
Mike O’Byrne opened it and worked it all
week long, commuting back to Park Ridge
at weekends. Jeanette was still there
preparing the small team of about a dozen.
Glandular fever had hit Jeanette by this
time, and to this day still affects her but to a
lesser degree.
“I was never a fan of sand track racing,”
said Mike. “So it was probably an easy
decision for us with Janette not well, the car
yard going well in Murgon etc, so we at
first tried to sell the property at Park Ridge
and then leased it, and moved.
“The commuting was never going to
work.”
Mike admits it was a hard decision to
give up greyhound training.
“You have to be an egotist if you want to
be good at something, and I wanted to be
good at greyhound training,” he said. “And
I was good at what I did.
“It’s hard to walk away from that.”
O’Byrne had won the Gabba trainer’s
premiership six times, five in a row, was
second to Tony Zammit, and then won it
again. He won six titles at the Gold Coast
and two at the Tweed.
It was heady days.
Superstars came and went ... none better
than Hopeful Doll.
“She was the best greyhound I put a
lead on and the best in Queensland until
Flying Amy came along,” said O’Byrne.
O’Byrne had bought her for the Hilliers
in a package deal from Alan Pringle, two
dogs for $10,000, or $6000 for Hopeful
Doll and $4000 for Flash Crown.
“Alan said he had three from the litter,
but suggested we buy the two fawns
because on early promise he thought the
third of them would be best suited to
Harold Park and the other two would be
suited by the Gabba,” said O’Byrne.
That’s just how it turned out. But the
one Pringle kept was classic winner
Spanish Dance dam of superstar Key
Dancer and a huge source of never-ending
winners for the Pringle family even today.
“She raced as if she had a jockey on
board,” is how Mike O’Byrne describes
Hopeful Doll.
“I remember her first race start was in a
maiden at Tweed Heads. Tony Zammit had
one in the race and he thought his could
win. Tony asked if my bitch had trialled on
the track and I told him she had only been
slipped.
“But she had trialled at Beenleigh and
run faster than Trixies Flight and Indian
Town.
“I think Tony ended up backing
Hopeful Doll.”
Hopeful Doll ended up breaking the
558m and 704m track records at the Gabba
and represented Queensland in the National
Sprint as well as winning a number of
feature races.
“I remember her first ever trial for us,”
said Mike. “I couldn’t wait to get home to
ring Ham and tell him we had a freak.”
But Hopeful Doll wasn’t the only star to
emerge from the O’Byrne kennel.
'I was good at what
I did ... it's hard to
walk away from that'
Run Baby Run, Shy Nimbus, Shy Lili,
Border Maid, Uncovered were all top grade
performers.
“Indian Town was Jeanette’s favourite
dog,” said Mike. “He won two Golden
Sands at the Gold Coast and two Winter
Chases.
“I won five Winter Chases in a row.”
Amanda Flash, the grand staying bitch,
was Mike’s favourite greyhound.
“We took her north to win two
Rockhampton Cups and made so many
friends,” he said.
“Thor’s Edition was outstanding and
should have won a National Sprint
championship instead of finishing third. If I
had him in the final two years later, he
would have won. I knew more about
travelling dogs etc by then.”
The dog who put the O’Byrnes onto the
professional training path was Doc McDuff.
He won 25 races and Mike admits “paid
for our kennel block” at Park Ridge.
“I’m in the process of building a bar at
Murgon and we will call it ‘Dusty’s Place’
in honour of Doc McDuff,” he said.
O’Byrne had a great eye for a
greyhound. He bought Run Baby Run
cheaply and won a Queensland Futurity
with her.
“I wouldn’t know how many races we
won over all those years and that
disappoints me because we never kept those
sorts of records,” he said.
He admits he misses the thrill of racing.
“I still watch the dogs on Thursday
nights, always watch the big races, but I
admit I don’t pine for the sport.”
He says he notices that the industry has
changed. “While anyone can still train their
own dog from the backyard, they can’t
“The industry in Queensland had a lot to
thank Ham and Margaret Hillier for.
“They made the industry become more
professional, because Ham would go out
and buy the dogs he wanted, and pay good
money for them.
“To compete with us, the other trainers
had to do the same, and that’s what
happened.”
Jeanette and Mike have even discussed
getting back into training.
“I’ve been asked a few times to go back
training and while I haven’t said yes, I still
haven’t said no,” he said. “But we have a
quality of life in Murgon, great friends, and
we both enjoy playing golf regularly up
here.”
Jeanette was zone champion in C Grade
last year and runner-up the previous year.
Mike plays off a 16 handicap.
“I could not see us in the industry as big
as we were at Park Ridge,” said Mike.
He and Jeanette occasionally attend the
guests of former Gabba Club president
What's in a name
asks Andrew
By
DAVID BRASCH
JUST 10 days before the qualifying
trials for the 2005 Vince Curry Memorial
Maiden series, Sarah Pringle received a set
of registration papers for a Bitability Bale-
Cockatoo Cabin bitch.
The name Sarah received was Vizcaya.
Sarah’s partner Andrew Monaghan was
horrified. Andrew had trouble even
pronouncing the name let alone knowing
what it was or meant, and told Sarah just
what he thought of it.
“When she wins the Vince Curry you
won’t be saying that,” Sarah told Andrew.
And that’s just what happened.
Vizcaya is named after a cafT in Perth
that Sarah had been to while campaigning
top stayer Spanish Belle in WA a year
before.
“My auntie also tells me Vizcaya is a
place in Spain,” said Sarah.
Whatever its origins, there is no
doubting Vizcaya is now the name of a
very, very promising young greyhound, one
that has given Sarah and Andrew their
biggest thrill in a lifetime of racing.
“The Vince Curry is the best win we
have had,” said Sarah. “It’s the most
prizemoney we have won and it has been
the race our family has been trying to win
for years.”
The thrill of a Vince Curry victory was
evident immediately after the race. Sarah
cried, Andrew had tears welling up, Sarah’s
mum Margaret was still crying an hour
later.
Brother Marty Hallinan rang first thing
the following morning with huge
congratulations.
Serbian Tiger holds on to win his semi-final.
Victory in the Vince Curry series does
that to you. It is a race you earn. Four of the
toughest rounds separates the best from
those just hoping.
Sarah was a virtual novice in the stud
game when she approached Paul Wheeler
to stand Bitability Bale at stud a couple of
years ago. Generally she had restricted
herself to the Pringle family stars.
“I loved that dog and followed him all
the time,” Pringle said of Bitability Bale.
“Paul was taken aback that I should
want him because he didn’t think anyone
would want to stand him at stud because he
had not won on a two-turn track.
“But I was happy to take him and give
him a chance. I love u-turn dogs at stud and
he won the Galaxy which is one of the
toughest tests on u-turn racing there is.”
Bitability Bale in two years with Pringle
has served 90 bitches.
Cockatoo Cabin, already a proven bigtime
producer, was the fourth bitch he
mated.
“She did nothing on the track, but she
broke in very well,” said Sarah of the half
sister to champion sprinter and now top sire
Bobniak.
“I liked her from when she was a pup,
but at her fourth trial, she smashed toes on
her foot.
“She was 16 months old, so we tossed
her into a yard with two litters of pups and
she ran with them for months.”
The toes did not heal, but Sarah was
determined to give Cockatoo Cabin a
chance at stud.
“She’s been a problem bitch,” she said.
The litter to Just The Best produced
Group 1 winner Rocka Cockatoo.
Cockatoo Cabin was just the sort of
bitch Bitability Bale needed to kick start his
stud career.
“She produced six pups, two dogs and
four bitches,” said Sarah. “I sold two
bitches, one to Neil Powell, one to Sydney
and kept the rest.”
No Obstacle broke the Albion Park
395m track record but has since been sold
to Victoria, Vizcaya has already won the
Group 2 Vince Curry, and Sarah’s other
two from the litter, Coogan’s Bluff and
Magdalena will both win at Albion Park
according to their trainer.”
Vizcaya was always Sarah’s pick.
“She broke in well, had a season and we
gave her time,” said Sarah.
“She had eight trials at different tracks
coming into the Vince Curry quallies. She
was right at the right time.”
Sarah and Andrew have been together
for five years, and in July 2005 will have
been Queenslanders for three years.
“We found it very stressful in the week
leading up to the final,” admitted Sarah.
“It was so stressful, that to get our
minds off the race, we played two games of
Monopoly that afternoon.”
That night they were both big winners.
Personality
Journal Editor DAVID BRASCH sits down with 2004
Personality of the Year Paul Felgate
of the
Paul Felgate, Kathy Evans and Peter Bellamy with champion
racehorse Rock Of Gibraltar during their recent trip to Ireland.
Year
Felgate admires world champion
stallion Sdler's Wells.
IF Paul Felgate had his way there
would be 12 races at Albion Park each
week, and 12 runners in each race. And
he’d be happy to be No 12 every time.
Felgate’s life has virtually been ruled
by the number 12 ... and he’s not
complaining one bit.
Felgate was born on July 12, 1958.
He played rugby league from the
time he was nine until he finally gave
up when 27 and played hooker ...
carrying the number 12 until
international numbers started.
When he first left home, his new address
was 12 Black Street, Yerongpilly.
He signed the contract to buy Brandons
Electrical on August 12, 1987.
He met partner Kathy Evans at the Gold
Coast dogs on July 12. Sydney Tiger, who
had been staying at his kennels at Alberton,
won the Gold Coast Cup that week.
On New Year’s Day in 1989 he had a tip
for a horse that was No 12 that day at Eagle
Farm. He had $100 on it and the horse paid
$40 on the TAB. It paid for a deposit on a
house at Moorooka on which he is about to
build a block of units.
In 1991, he backed Let’s Elope to win the
Melbourne Cup but tossed in No 12 Magnolia
Hall (at 100-1) who finished third, and landed
a $5000 trifecta.
In 2003, he unloaded on No 12 Makybe
Diva in the Melbourne Cup, roved the trifecta
with her and won $21,000.
That same year he plumped for 50-1 shot
Grey Song in the Caulfield Cup, with the
stayer landing third and Paul landing a rich
trifecta.
And in 2004, he made sure he included
150-1 shot Zazzman in his Melbourne Cup
trifectas and First Four ... it paid $40,000.
LUCKY?
Not Paul Felgate. He came up tough all
his life, and took a gamble to buy Brandons
Electrical and has since turned it into a million
dollar business employing up to 60 staff.
He has been around horses since he was a
kid spending his weekends at Jimboomba
with John Heritage who had been foreman
for the Alby Pratt stable.
“John got me started into racing when I
was a kid,” said Felgate. “I played football
with his kids, but we spent all our time with
John riding young horses, going country
racing.
“He showed me even then how to care for
animals. We used to ride yearlings, just
broken in, chasing cattle all over his Brahman
stud property.”
Greyhounds came into Felgate’s world
when he met up with Owen Lockett and Ces
Cox when a 17-year-old.
“Ces’ father was a stalwart of coursing at
Rocklea,” said Paul. “We would hang around
Ces all the time, go to the trials with him.
“And Owen was a great fella. We learnt a
lot from him.”
By the time Felgate started work as an
electrical sub-contractor, he was already into
greyhounds.
“Owen and then Ron Ball trained dogs for
me, and then I got some of my own,” he said.
“We had a lot of success with Wizardry and
Dainty Success.
“Doug Helton and Reg Hazelgrove were
great mates. Dougie gave us all the
information from his cousin Ray’s kennel ...
not that Ray ever knew.”
In 1987 Felgate bought Brandons and
tossed himself into building up the business.
He gave up training but owned a few dogs,
like Brandon’s Best who won a Capalaba
Derby when trained by Ball.
By 1995, Felgate had bought
a property at Alberton, his business had
expanded and he had a great staff base to
allow him time to come back into greyhounds.
“The reason I came back into the game
was because of the QBIS scheme at the time,”
he said. “I spent $20,000 on a bunch of three
month old pups and got Just The Best,
Ballistic Jet, Brandonna, Angel House,
Brandon Blue and Bobby’s Ghost."
With great help from people like Bevan
and Elaine Williamson all along the way, he
has achieved more than he thought possible.
The industry has been good to Paul
Felgate and he has always been ready to back
the industry with support.
“Just the other night I noticed a picture
on a wall at Ipswich of a sponsorship we did
in 1987.”
He’s been sponsoring the Queensland
Derby for seven years, and this year took on
the Futurity as well.
“We looked at making the Derby a Group
1 but those races need to be $50,000 to the
winner,” said Paul.
He sees the benefit of that sponsorship in
work his company does for the Albion Park
Trust and other tracks throughout the southeast.
He has goals still.
“I want to breed, own and train a city horse
winner,” he said. “And I want to compete in
the Masters Games.”
Now 47, Felgate is looking at the “Over
50s” section and is confident he can get
himself fit and ready for the Masters
Games task. “I just want to finish.”
Like most, his greyhound-racing goal
is to have a Group 1 winner.
He sees the future of greyhound
racing in this state encompassing poker
machines and dining at one venue only in
the south-east corner.
“Our biggest competition is poker
machines, because they present the
equivalent of a greyhound race every 30
seconds,” he said. “We have got to make
on-course more attractive. Make it that the
main attraction is a night out, and greyhound
racing is a bonus attraction on the night.”
He says the days of greyhound racing
attracting punters on-course is over. “They
are at home, or in the pubTAB.”
“The only way to compete is to have poker
machines on-course. We can’t sell the night
out as dog racing only.”
He says greyhound racing in Queensland
needs a new venue of its own, and with only
one venue he cannot see the Gold Coast or
Ipswich maintaining the same level in the
future.
“I can see the future being only the one
track in the south east corner of the state
racing three or four times a week.
“But I can see country racing ever
increasing in the future because of the influx
of dogs that will be sent north once the one
major track in the city takes off.
“People down here could revert to training
a small team under the house.”
Felgate has tossed himself behind
greyhound racing, personally and as an
industry. He knows what it takes to be
successful in both business and sport. He
might feel a bit eccentric when it comes to
the number 12.
His auntie Rhoda Felgate MBE was even
GAP volunteers and their families were
treated to a BBQ lunch at Coominya Lodge
greyhound property in February.
The large gathering of hard working GAP
volunteers was given a behind the scenes look
at the workings of a racing greyhound kennel.
Cathy and Ron Jackson were happy to
give the GAP group use of their property for
the BBQ and a tour. Coominya Lodge is home
to many young pups, broodbitches and racing
greyhounds.
It also kennels a number of greyhounds
for the GAP Program, before the dogs enter
into foster carers homes before adoption with
new owners as pets.
A promising young litter of cute eightweek-old
pups were an instant hit with the
children and adults alike at the BBQ.
Bred by Owen and Mary Edmonds, the
Greyhound Adoption
Bitability Bale-Twinkling pups gave GAP
volunteers an opportunity to see the hard work
put in by greyhound racing participants to
prepare dogs for their life of racing.
From newborn pups through to racing
dogs, Ron Jackson fielded many questions
from the keen group of volunteers when he
brought one of his racers, Master Mistake,
out of his kennel for an appearance.
Program News
GAP is involved in many public
promotions, the volunteers at these events
often answering questions from the public on
both greyhound racing and greyhounds as
pets.
The knowledge gained from a day like
this, will help greatly in our promotions of
greyhounds as pets, and the greyhound racing
industry.
ROCKY
NEWS
By JOHN LIPPITT
Our track received a facelift early in
February. The track stripped and a new
racing surface was laid. The running rail
has also undergone repairs of sand blasting
and painting,
Race times of late have been ordinary
but this was only to be expected due to the
new surface. This will improve as the
surface settles.
My committee and I would like to thank
those who gave up their time to help with
the repairs,
Local trainers and visitors who intend
nominating for Rocky are urged to view
the revised edition of the up and coming
evens program as there are some very good
races on offer.
The 630m events with extra
prizemoney should encourage trainers to
test their staying hopefuls for the CQ
Distance Championship on Rocky Cup
final night June 9.
By the time of printing we should have
witnessed the running of the Easter Sprint
sponsored by Pat Law Securities, but more
about that in the May edition.
Like other participants at the GOTY
presentation at the Hilton in Brisbane in
February, I would also like to take this
opportunity to congratulate the GRA and
the Brisbane Club on a wonderful night.
Yo Yo's Boy dies
QUEENSLAND stud dog Yo Yo’s Boy has died.
The son of Credibility-Yo Yo City was brilliant on the racetrack when trained by
Edna Stafford, breaking the track record at the Gold Coast and running a juvenile
record at Albion Park.
He also downed Awesome Assassin in a Gold Coast Cup Consolation.
At stud he is best remembered as the sire of Yo Yo’s Gem.
That bitch won the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Albion Park but was unlucky to run into
several stars in Group races being placed to Tricky Creek in the Brisbane Cup,
M’Lady’s Fool in the Futurity, Awesome Machine in the Winter Carnival Cup and
Sottie Allover in the Tweed Galaxy.
She was also a finalist in the Queensland Cup and state final of the National
Sprint.
Yo Yo’s Boy also sired Mr Reliable who won the Group 2 Vince Curry, Ace Boy
who ran a track record at Healesville in Victoria and was second in a Gold Coast
Cup, Yo Yo String, a National Sprint Championship finalist last year, and Dosarg
who was second in a Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park.
Yo Yo’s Boy had his first service on June 29, 1997. In all he served 222 bitches,
had 739 registered pups and to the GRA’s latest figures, had 499 named offspring.
Preferential Draws
There has been a push to have preferential
box draws at Capalaba for some time.
Following a submission from the
QGBOTA, the GRA has agreed that from the
April 1, one race per meeting will have
preferential box draws for a three-month trial
period.
Noms will need to be marked “inside or
provide further details shortly.
Following submissions from the
Abandoned
Following a morning downpour of approx
6mm of rain the Albion Park Friday afternoon
meeting of March 18 was abandoned.
What a disgrace, the industry loses approx
$8000 in prizemoney when the track is
supposed to be an all weather track ... it is an
obvious maintenance problem that should not
have been allowed to occur.
Once again licensees pay for
administrative incompetence.
I wish the Qld Bulls had abandoned play
for the day!
handful of dogs. He had just decided to sell
the property and had bought a mail delivery
contract.
Muller was just getting into the industry
and Mencken gave him a few broodbitches
to help get him started.
Fast forward to a year ago and Mick has
sold the mail run and is heading to
Queensland, he and his wife Robin
following their daughters who had all
shifted north.
“I ran into Glen again and he said he
had a litter of pups that had just broken in
well and would I take up training again and
take the pups to Queensland to race,” Mick
told The Journal.
And that’s how Mick Mencken came to
have highly promising Miss Shelly Lee, a
recent Queensland Futurity finalist and
multiple Albion Park winner.
Mick’s career in greyhound racing
started young, when he was “eight or nine”.
“My dad Fred was driving the family
home to Baulkham Hills just near
Parramatta in Sydney, and he stopped at the
Northmead trial track,” said Mick. “We all
stood there and watched the trials. I was
hooked.”
By the time Mick was 17 he was driving
former jockey and then veteran dog trainer
Les Roberts about the country with a
couple of dogs. “I drove Les to trials, races
etc and we went halves in the dogs,” he
said.
At 18 Mick Mencken got the first dog
of his own, a giveaway called Angus Girl. It
was 1969 and at her first start for Mick,
Angus Girl won a 300m maiden at
Queenbeyan.
“It was the only race she won and really
she was no good, but that day at
Queenbeyan I thought she and I were
champions,” he said.
Mick branched out. For his second dog
he was given Hi Saroah to train. The dog
would not go around a circle track.
“I took 2.5kgs off him and won four in a
row first up at Singleton with him,” said
Mick. “His biggest claim to fame was
running second to Tientsin Tosca when that
dog broke the Wentworth Park track record
running 30.58. Hi Saroah was beaten eight
lengths and never did win a city race.”
At the time, former Irishman Pat Skillon
was in the industry. He had imported
Proper Streak to this country and was
training a number of dogs.
“Pat had a young dog he was taking to
all the gymkhanas but would never race,”
said Mick. “The dog’s owner Perc Roger
asked me to take him on and I won a
maiden art Singleton by 10 lengths with
him.
“His name was Two Feet Ahead. We
were offered $10,000 for him straight after
that Singleton maiden.”
Two Feet Ahead was an outstanding
stayer. In all he won more than 20 of his 50
race starts.
“His big claim to fame was he beat
Dusty Ginny over 617m at Cessnock by
five lengths after giving here six lengths
start and it was her first start after winning
the National Distance final by 10 lengths,”
said Mick.
The dog was unbeatable at Cessnock
over a distance. The Cessnock club offered
$2000 for a match race against Two Feet
Ahead but no one would take up the offer.
Two Feet Ahead finished third in a heat
of the Association Cup behind the great
stayers Kawati Boy and Del Bairn Babe in
a race tagged the “match race of the
century”.
After Two Feet Ahead, Mick also got
Greenane Mick from the Skillon kennel and
he went on to win 11 of 20 starts, winning
three at Harold Park and making Invitation
class there.
Mick gave dogs away for a short time
when he and Robin married. He and Robin
have six daughters.
“But by 1987 I was looking at getting
back into dogs, so I bought 20 acres at
Gunnedah. It was at the time of the stock
market crash and I was expecting a transfer
as a Telecom technician to Gunnedah.
Mick Mencken and the highly promising Miss Shelly Lee.
“But that didn’t happen so I quit and set
up the property to rear pups,” he said. “We
had 90 dogs on the place at one stage.”
Gunnedah is five hours from Sydney
and that makes it almost impossible to train
city class dogs.
“I got Dainty Skiffe (Temlee-Sailboat
Annie) to breed with and she produced
Dainty Michelle for us,” said Mick. In all
she won 14 races including a heat of the
NSW St Leger.
“I eventually gave her to Dave Irwin
who won eight of 11 with the bitch.”
The bitch’s first litter, by Little Denver,
all won races but by this time Mick and
Robin had decided to sell the property.
“That’s when I saw Glen and gave him
Dainty Michelle and another broodbitch to
help get him started,” said Mick. “Dainty
Michelle’s litter by Hug The Rail produced
‘three of four city winners’.”
Mick bought a taxi, and then the mail
contract.
“I was completely out of dogs for those
seven years, so much so that when I got
back in a year ago I had never heard of
Brett Lee and didn’t know Dave Irwin had
trained the winner of the National Derby.”
At the time Mick was being chased to
sell the mail run. The girls, including local
singing star Tracy, had moved north, and he
and Robin were happy to call it quits in
Gunnedah.
“That’s when I saw Glen and he asked
me to take on the History Lesson-Dry Art
litter he had just broken in,” said Mick.
Slam Duncan, already a winner for the
kennel, and Miss Shelly Lee are the best.
“I’m enjoying the dogs again, specially
having a bitch like Miss Shelly Lee,” he
said.
"She is only young and so easy to train.
She’s still learning to race and I think she
has plenty of improvement in her.”
Mick and Robin are already talking
about buying a five-acre property at
Fernvale to develop a training complex.
“Dainty Michelle is the quickest dog
I’ve trained, but old Two Feet Ahead was
the best.”
That is until he met Miss Shelly Lee.
GRAFTON is one of the last
TAB tracks to convert from
grass to loam but that
transition will have a turning effect for
the Northern Rivers track.
Once known as “The Carnival”,
Grafton slowly lost its popularity in July
and the once famous winter gathering
was a shadow of its former self.
But now with a new loam track,
trainers from all over Australia are
likely to return.
Grafton had problems convincing
interstate trainers to support the July
carnival because of the grass surface but
inquiries have already started from
Queensland and Victoria for this year’s
event.
After gaining final approval from
GRNSW last year, Grafton received the
news that many other clubs would like to
hear, and work started in January.
Going to plan with only minor holdups,
work was completed at the end of
February and the first trial morning
took place late that month with amazing
results.
A total of 64 greyhounds
trialled, an increase 300% on a
normal morning and there were
glowing reports.
Ex-Sydney trainer Jan Fineran
was full of praise for the new
surface, Reg Gardoll trialled 12
dogs and local conditioner Brad
Northfield was full of praise.
“The dogs used to run over a
hump in the middle of the track
going into the first turn, that is
now gone and the camber is
perfect.
"The first turn keeps the
dogs in now and that don’t seem
to run off, it is going to be ideal
for young pups.
“It was a little dry but it
will take a few weeks to settle
and by May it should be
perfect.
"The 480m will be like running 520m,
it’s a tough run now,” Northfield said.
“It is going to make both mine and
"The dogs will leave here fully
no need for the transition to a loam track
The sand used was from a local creek
and there was no dimensional changes to
the track, the surface the only work done
on the course.
Grafton resumed on March 5 and the
new surface had it’s first true test of full
field racing.
All is set now for this year’s July
carnival, the feature will be the July
The first feature races were held at
the end of last month, both Derby and
Oaks.
The Jacaranda Carnival will be
conducted in October- November.
The club’s first sand meeting back in
March was a 10-race program with a
crowd of about 250. Brad Northfield
showed his liking for the new surface by
winning the opening race with Kid
Owners and trainers at that meeting
were full of praise for the track which
proved uniform throughout the day.
Lismore track officials have been of
UP-AND-COMING trainer Robert
Crawford has some big plans for promising
chaser Traction Control.
The Lansley Bale-Tirolize two year old
won the rich Launching Pad series and has
impressed with wins at Sandown and
Bendigo.
Around Sandown he has clocked 29.73
seconds for the 515 metres and 29.80 and
29.90, while he also clocked the fastest time
of 24.29 in the semi-finals of the Bendigo Vic
Breeders.
Traction Control has had 10 starts for
seven wins and a second, collecting $41,215
along the way.
Crawford has targeted the Easter Egg as
Traction Control stepping up to top grade.
He said that series would determine if his
youngster is up to taking on the best in
Australia yet.
The trainer bought the pup, which is raced
by his fiancee Leenne, when he was three
months old off Wayne Beers and also has two
youngsters out of the next litter by Brett Lee
which are about eight months old.
“He didn’t break in to start off with. He
would go to sleep in the track-side cages at
the Tooradin track,’’ Crawford said.
“He just slowly got better and better and
it now just depends if he’s going to be able to
take the next step up of not.
"There are an awful not of good dogs
around and he still needs to just find a couple
of lengths.’’
Crawford said Traction Control’s win in
the Launching Pad final was only his second
run back over 500m after injuring the
ligaments behind his stopper bone and elbow
at the Meadows.
“He’s getting to his best now. He showed
when he ran that 24.29 in the semis of the
Vic Breeders at Bendigo he could run.
"And then he missed the start in the final
and ran into the back of everything in the
race,,’’ he said.
“That’s the only two times he’s been out
of a place, in the final at Bendigo and when
he got injured at the Meadows in the heats of
the Silver Chief.’’
Crawford said it was always easy to place
greyhound which could run.
“Good dogs make trainers look good and
it’s even better when we own this dog
ourselves,’’ he said.
Crawford, 29, got a licence when he was
18 years old after learning from his father
David and experienced mentor Len Poore.
“Dad’s got Gordon’s Larry at the moment
which goes pretty well and Lenny won the
Warragul Cup with Gypsy General when I
was with him,’’ he said.
“Chasing ability is probably Traction
Control’s great attribute.
"He’s consistent early, has some mid race
speed and hit the line all right.’’
The trainer said he felt Traction Control
would only improve in coming months.
“I think he will get stronger and it will be
interesting so see where we are with him in
another couple of months,’’ he said.
The Launching Pad, in just its third year,
already had an impressive honour roll.
Melbourne Cup placegetter Bounty Lass
won the inaugural event and Melbourne Cup
winner Hallucinate was a finalist last year.
Traction Control took home a $5000
super GOBIS bonus on top of the $20,000
winner’s cheque.
In the Horsham Cup final Foreign Legion
scored an impressive win over favourite
Amarillio.
Gun sprinter Whisky Assassin was
scratched after drawing box three in the final
boosting speculation the Horsham Cup heat
may have been his last start before retiring to
stud.
He is expected to stand at a stud fee of
about $3300.
NORTH Queensland has produced some
wonderful greyhounds over the years but few
could match the deeds of Idol Eyes (Acclaim
Star-Devlin Lass).
On her home track she set some amazing
track records over 380m, 498m and 643m.
Amazing, because the times she ran in
1984 were not bettered until the year 2000.
It’s very rare for a track record to last that
long, particularly over distances in common
use. Idol Eyes showed her quality to Gabba
fans in 1983 with three smart wins (41.92) as
well as placings in some good races, second
to Shy Deena in the Carlton Cup (704m) and
a close third to Fawn World in the Galaxy
over 558m.
Idol Eyes was a daughter of the 1979
NSW GOTY Acclaim Star (1979 Champion
Of Champions Sprint Fnl (Can), 1979 Champ
Of Champs Sprint NSW Fnl, 1979 Melb Cup,
1979 Bris Cup, TR Cannington 530m).
At stud, he was best known as the sire of
Magic Gull (1984 Qld Derby, 1984 Johnnie
Walker Series, 1984 Qld Cup (Bnl), 1985 Qld
Straight Track C’ship (Cap), 1984 Capalaba
Derby, TR Gabba 558m), Inch Time (1984
Nat Derby, 1983 Vic Peters Mem (Hpk),
1983 Penrith Derby), Black Regatta (1987
Potential Stakes (Hpk), TR Temora 457m),
Elsie Johnston (TR Angle Park 512m,
Strathalbyn 535m, Port Pirie 516m, Gawler
530m), and also sired Summer Wine,
Jatasha’s Star, Nifty Monaro, Copper Lady,
National Ivy, Carmella, Isacclaim, Scootalot,
Total Claim, Star Prediction, Stop The Act,
Johnny’s Mate, Taxi Dancer, Paper Raider
and Artrio’s Angel
It was fitting Idol Eyes became a star on
Townsville as her mother won the first race
held there on opening night, 16 December
1976. Devlin Lass was a fine broodbitch who
was also the dam of brilliant Northern sprinter
Victory King and Stop The Act.
Victory King was a finalist in the 1985
Australian Cup and won a few in a Gabba
campaign which included a 32.89 BON
victory.
Idol Eyes’ sister Stop The Act won of the
1986 Townsville Cup and became the dam
of Act All Over who kept the family tradition
going with victory in the 1991 Townsville
Cup.
Devlin Lass’ dam Night Shiner was
owned by the Wheeler family and out of their
wonderful brood matron, Spotted Topaway,
who left a host of top producing daughters
such as Binkie Burger, Black Topaway,
Madeira Streak, Mood Maker, Proper
Topaway and Top Gear.
Binkie Burger was the dam of Vulcan
Rapid (1974 Silver Collar Cap) and granddam
of Unreal Rapid (1980 NSW Straight
Track C’ship Wyg).
Black Topaway was the dam of Fair
Bullion (1976 Christmas Gift-Sprinters Hpk)
and can be found behind Foggy Trail, Forever
Rebel, Ranie’s Reign, Gambler’s Gold and
the brilliant Mister Britain, who won 20 races
at Wenty and was victorious in 1989 and 1990
Nat Sprint C’ship NSW Fnl (Wpk), 1990 Roy
Fund Cup (Wpk), 1989 Winfield All Stars
(Rch) and 1990 Bulli Bullet as well as running
a track record over 530m at Penrith.
Madeira Streak was the dam of Apache
Freeway who sired 1983 WA Greyhound Of
The Year, Afro Freeway.
Proper Topaway was the dam of Gratitude
(1981 Penrith Oaks), who was grandmother
of Gambler’s Image (twice winner of
Warragul Distance C’ship).
Top Gear was third dam of The
Godmother (1986 NSW Country C’ship).
The most influential of these was Mood
Maker, dam of Makatak (TR Bulli 686m),
Mood Charmer (found behind Olympic Rose,
Charles Atlas, Like Her Dad and Walkabout
Girl) and Smooth Mood who made a big
impact on Queensland racing.
Ponderings from an expert
Australian thoroughbred expert Ken McLean has fashioned champion pedigrees for
some years both in his home country and in the US. Some of his ponderings make interesting
reading.
“We know that by using outbreeding or outcrossing we cannot hope too much for the
mating to produce offspring that will have dominance, or hope to fix specific characteristics
in the line.
Only by reducing the genetic pool by duplicating superior ancestors can certain gene
groupings be reinforced - hopefully at double strength for dominance.
Outstanding performers tracing from female lines not having produced good sires
usually are not successful when they go to stud. There are always exceptions though.
Outbred performers represent a big risk as breeding stock; inbred or linebred performers
with a superior ancestor duplicated represent a lesser risk and sires from female lines that
have previously produced good sires, hardly any risk.
This is a general statement and there will be examples on occasions to upset this
summary. If a stud prospect comes from a proven siring family, and they have reasonable
performance on the track, they can be an ideal type to stand at stud.
If one studies the siring performances of leading sires one finds that not all of them
were top performers themselves - some had only adequate ability but with excellent pedigrees.
The genotype happens to be more significant than racing ability - if a stud has come
from a family which has already bred successful sires, surely the odds are in favour of it
repeating that success.
Outbred sires from good quality damlines that prove to be influential sires in their own
right are worth their weight in gold; their genotype must comprise inestimable characteristics
that favour racing ability.
Sires of this ilk invite hybrid vigour yet contribute excellent genetic variation that favours
racing progeny on a consistent basis. These are the sires that inbred broodbitches can be
mated to for even further improvement in racing ability.
Also, if a sire had classic performance himself on the track, it was a matter of finding
the right type of female pedigree to breed that superior progeny. Sires only fail if they do
not receive the right kind of females.
Famed thoroughbred breeder Frederico Tesio used sires that began their careers with
disappointing results.
He often gave a mating to such a sire more than one chance - and a repeat mating,
when the first attempt failed, often proved successful - he bred many great performers by
class performers on the track that had become unfashionable as sires.
He maintained the pedigree had not changed, only the perception by breeders had
changed.”
Smooth Mood was the dam of Smooth
Oollee (1980 Foundation Gift Gba, TR
Lawnton 482m) and appears in the damline
behind Brother Black, Ballalika Boy, Held
To Ransom, Chris Mac, New Generation,
Ultra Noir, Ultra Active, Billy Stanley,
Blocker Stanley, Token Wave, Ruddikan,
Cheeky Beau and Fashion Thief.
Ultra Noir deserves special mention.
She was one of the fastest greyhounds to
race at the Gabba (a sizzling 32.22) and then
headed to South Australia where she twice
ran a track record at Angle Park as well as
winning the 1993 Anniversary Cup and 1993
Kings v Queens Apk.
Visits interstate netted her the 1993
Premiers Cup at Wentworth Park and a slick
29.80 FFA win at Olympic Park.
Idol Eyes’ fourth dam, Lady Topaway,
held the track record for 375 yds at Goulburn
and was dam of Spotted Missile and Miss
Topaway, both fine broodbitches.
Spotted Missile was the dam of Harold
Park Invitation winner, Radiant Missile and
his sister She’s A Missile who threw He’s A
Tal (TR Cannington 740m) and the classy
Brigadier North who won the 1978 XXXX
Tphy and 1978 Constellation at the Gabba.
Miss Topaway is best known as the dam
of Steelflex, famous for being the only dog
to win the National Derby twice.
She also produced Tenderhook (30.83
Wpk), Ultraway (1974 Richmond
Cannonball), Wild Rapid (TR Darwin 375m)
and can be found behind Rooskye, Sagis
Charm, Devon Legend, Go Travel, Gullpulil,
Miner’s Moment and Willaway Lad, a Harold
Park Invitation winner who held the 420m
track record at Tweed Heads.
The fifth dam Lady Rockaway was a
speed machine who the 1954 July Cup at
Grafton for Bob Doak.
Her son, Lord Rockaway, stood at stud in
the US while her daughters Another
Rockaway, Glendale Lady, Missile Rocker,
Our Shirl, Rockaway Lady, Rockaway Queen
and Rosy View have all bred on.
They can be found behind top performers
Red Mystique, Mystery Idle, Zingalong Red,
Wiljarra, Overflow Love, Kabisa Gem,
Waterview Star, Scottish Express, Fag Ash,
Gleefullee, Kantarn Bale, Bitability Bale,
Judo Art, Hi Taxi, Bollacky Barry, High
Monakii, El Gazelle, Black Derby, Oberon
Lily, Dark And Gloomy and Fawn World.
The next dam, Rose Fire was another
brilliant sprinter who also won the July Cup
for Bob Doak, in 1947.
Her Chief Havoc sons Balinga Chief,
Percy Havoc and Rocket Fire were all stars.
The latter went to America where he sired
Rocket Ship, a sireline that is alive today via
Bright Lad, Liberty Lad, Citizen Supreme and
Greenpark Fox whose sons Come On Ranger,
by David Brasch
Cry Dalcash, Manx Treasure and Trade
Official have all made an impact in Ireland in
recent years.
Rose Fire was a half sister to Tralee Lass,
mother of outstanding sprinter and sire
Oakleigh Chief.
When she retired, Idol Eyes’ progeny kept
her in the spotlight.
Her litter to Pop Gun included Avenue
Princess (1989 Townsville Cup), She’s Back
(TR Ayr 487m), Blue Water Girl and Jeanie
Two.
Blue Water Girl was the dam of Super
Rajan (1995 Townsville Cup) and Super Arch
(TR Cairns 544m), while Jeanie Two was the
mother of Mister Downunder (1993 Cairns
Cup).
Avenue Princess became an outstanding
producer. Among her pups were Jurassic’s
Image (1998 SA St Leger, TR Angle Park
600m), Platinum Prince (1999 Chairmans
Cup Wpk, TR Wentworth Park 720m, Bulli
700m), Rue Des Grande (1997 Presidents
Cup BGC), Riddle Me This, Jurassic Prince,
Floats On Air, Bogan Bandit, Champagne
Chanel and many other city winners
Idol Eyes’ litter to Half Nelson contained
city winners Cafe De Wheels and Twilight
Eyes and the Amerigo Man litter contained
Wentworth Park winner, Amerigo Idol,
Beagle Boy Eyes and Jeannie’s Me Mum.
Beagle Boy Eyes, a smart Gabba
performer, excelled at Lawnton where he won
the 1992 Metropolitan Distance C’ship. He
also ran a track record over 484m at Casino.
Jeannie’s Me Mum was the dam of
talented but wayward Captain’s Heir (TR
Ipswich 512m), Pacemaster (1996 New Year
Tphy Wpk), Tribute To Dad (1997 Nat Dist
C’ship SA Fnl Apk, 1996 SA Derby, 1996
Young Stars Classic Can), Mighty Mouse and
Jeanie’s Jet.
Jeanie’s Jet threw one of the country’s best
sprinters in Jeanie’s Queen, who has won at
Albion Park in 29.86, Sandown Park in 29.72
and won the 2002 Launceston Cup in track
record time for 522m.
Jeanie’s Jet is also dam of smart
performers such as Heir Elect, Old Jak
Carson, Phone Home and Droopy’s Pharaoh.
With a number of well credentialled
broodbitches who trace back to Idol Eyes, it
is likely her line will continue to produce top
class racers, probably with the strength to run
a strong 600 to 700m as it is a trait that she
has passed on to many of her descendants.
Idol Eyes, a great name and so apt, both
on the track and at stud.
OFTEN the placings in a greyhound
race are decided by the Judge with the aid
of a photo finish camera.
However, many racing industry
participants and followers are not aware
of how the photo finish camera operates.
It has been an integral item on
racecourses for many years.
Originally in the form of film that had
to be developed, today digital cameras are
capable of producing images instantly.
Photo finish
Although very different in the method
of producing the image, the basic
principles of operation are the same.
Unlike a normal camera that takes a
single photo of a panorama (an
unobstructed view of a wide area), the
digital photo finish camera takes multiple
photos of the finishing line and nothing
else.In doing that, each individual image
taken is incredibly thin, something like the
width of a human hair.
It is the joining of all of the individual
images together that results in the total
image of the finish.
The digital photo finish camera is
capable of taking 2000 images per second.
Below is an exaggerated simulation of
how individual images are joined together
to form a whole image.
An understanding of the operation of
the photo finish camera leads to the belief
that it is one of the very few things that
may be said to be infallible.
and which subsequently returned positive to
methylprednisolone.
Stewards took evidence from Mr W
Sharpe of Gilberton, trainer of Legendary
Honcho, Dr Mac Charles Welch and Dr E
Bruce young of the Racing Science Centre.
After hearing evidence, Sharpe was
charged under Australia Racing Rule 106
which states: “The owner, trainer of person
in charge of a greyhound nominated ot
compete in an event shall produce the
greyhound free of any drug”.
Sharpe pleaded not guilty but was found
guilty, disqualified for six months and fined
$500.
Legendary Honcho was disqualified from
Race 1 at the Gold Coast on March 20 under
Rule 108.
Sharpe was also charged under rule 109
(4) which states: “Any person (including an
official) being an owner, trainer, attendant or
person having official duties in relation to
greyhound racing, makes a false or misleading
statement in relation to an investigation,
examination, test or inquiry, or makes or
causes to be made a falsification in a
document in connection with greyhound
racing or the registration of a greyhound”.
Sharpe pleaded not guilty but was found
guilty and fined $250.
He was read his rights of appeal.
DAVID BRASCH
PAT Hennessy knew he had an extra
smart young dog ... it just took a few runs for
“Bimbo” to prove it.
Bimbo is Flying Scott (Awesome
Assassin-Highland Bride) the now at stud
former track star who proved himself among
the highest of class throughout the country.
“I bought him as a pup from Bob
Thompson in Lismore,” said Pat of how he
came to get Flying Scott. “Bob had said he
had mated the bitch to Awesome Assassin and
before she had even whelped the litter, I said
I was interested in buying a pup.”
Pat headed over to Bob’s when the pups
were 12 weeks.
“I picked him out straight away because
he looked so much like a dog I had raced 30
years before in Melbourne, a dog called Great
Glitter.”
Great Glitter, winner of a couple of races
at Olympic Park and a number on Victorian
provincial tracks, had the kennelname of
“Bimbo”.
“He looked like Great Glitter, fawn with
some white patches, so I took him,” said Pat.
Bimbo was left with Thompson to rear
and Pat picked him up at about 12-14
months old for education.
“Merv Miller rang me after a week to
come and pick him up, he said he had
learnt everything he could teach him,” said
Pat. “I took him home and did a bit more
education myself and started trialling
him.”
The dog ran 22.80 for 401m around
the Gold Coast at his first try, a “pretty
hot” time for one so young. He was
soon ready to race and Pat was
expecting the best.
That’s not what he got ... all he
got for his trouble was just that,
trouble.
“He drew the eight in a maiden at the
Gold Coast and was never out of trouble,” he
said. “It was the same in maidens at the Tweed
and then Casino.”
Pat sent him to his mate Reg Gardol at
Dubbo and the dog started trialling brilliantly
around Richmond. “But we started him there
and he got knocked down again,” said Pat.
He split his webbing at Richmond and vet
Phil Davis spent 45 minutes patching him up.
Back in work, Flying Scott made no mistakes
'Bimbo'
could fly!
this time, coming off the rails in a maiden at
Grafton to win by 10 lengths in 22.77.
It was all he needed. Flying Scott then
proceeded to build a huge reputation.
“He won the Wintersun Cup at Tweed,
and that 650m feature stayers race
on the Galaxy
program
and then ran 32.94 a length
off the record at Beenleigh in a heat of the
Queensland Cup,” said Pat.
That same day, Bob Giltinan took over
the dog’s training.
“Bob did a great job with Flying Scott
winning seven races at Albion Park with him,”
said Pat.
Eventually Flying Scott headed to the
kennel of Peter Dapiran in Victoria.
“He won a heat of the Sale Cup at his first
start for Peter but in the final he led into the
straight and cramped very badly,” said Pat.
“He had trouble with cramping most of
his career. But Peter found a thyroid problem
with the dog and once that was fixed he never
had a problem again.”
He won first up at The
Meadows after that and then
swept through three in a row at
Sandown including two
Melbourne Cup Preludes, a heat of
the Paws Of Thunder at Wenty
Park and finally the Sandown
Shootout.
“It was the biggest bet of my life,
$50,000 to $5000 and we missed out
by a half head,” said Pat of Flying
Scott’s close second to Bombastic
Shiraz in the Shootout.
It was the dog’s final race start
before taking up stud duties with Dean
Turley at Casino.
“He was a sensational dog,” said a
naturally biased Pat Hennessy. “He
publically trialled 29.95 around Albion
Park for Bob Giltinan, and came home
12.30 which is believed the quickest ever
around the track.
“One night at Albion Park he won the
last race of the night in 30.07 and came home
in 12.40.
“He had one of the biggest motors of any
dog around, and the best I’ve had.”
Pat Hennessy has had some pretty good
dogs in more than three decades of racing
greyhounds, including Diro’s Doll an 18 times
winner who was a star in an era of stars like
Temlee and Zulu Moss.
Diro’s Doll was to establish a broodbitch
dynasty which included Ceduna Babe and
Ceduna Babe. From them came Scenic Spa,
down to Welcome Stranger and even today
that line more than holds it own.
Pat Hennessy is justifiably proud of Flying
Scott and believes his dog will not let down
those breeders who show faith in him at stud.
“I’ve tried to help him along by donating
services to a number of race clubs,” said Pat.
“And I’ve just put my own bitch Must Obey
to him.”
Must Obey is from that fantastic litter
which included Annie’s Commando, Must
Command and Twirly Girl. She won three
races but injury forced her retirement. “It took
me a while to talk Dennis Reid into parting
with her,” said Pat.
Pat believes Flying Scott has everything
going for him at stud.
“I’ve got his video available for anyone
who wants it. In 12 of his wins he was either
in front or right up near the lead,” he said.
“He’s got an enormous temperament and
is a beautiful dog to match, a perfect dog in
every way.
" I hope he gets a reasonable number of
bitches to give him his chance at stud.
“The dog deserves his chance.”
That’s for sure.
Ipswich News
THERE has been plenty of verbal exchanges between
the Ipswich and Gold Coast Mayors in recent times.
Now the greyhound clubs from both cities are going to
settle the argument with the running of a distance club
challenge series during April and May.
Ipswich will stage the April final and Gold Coast the May
final. Both finals will be worth $1500 to the winners.
This series is a good opportunity for owners and trainers
with up and coming stayers to work their way through the
grades and race for increased prizemoney. More details on
this series can be obtained in the race calendar located in this
journal or by contacting the clubs direct.
With regard to the April race calendar the club has made
changes to reflect the introduction of the distance club
challenge with the Gold Coast club. Please review the calendar
printed in this journal for April’s races. We apologise for any
problems these changes may have caused.
The club is very satisfied with the response to the change
in nights for the running of our maiden series. Since moving
the 520m heats to Wednesday we have consistently had full
fields with reserves for these races.
If people have any ideas regarding the programming of
races please do not hesitate to talk to one of the committee.
The club is pleased to have a new sponsor in Fernvale
Produce on board supporting our industry.
The have committed to sponsoring one Wednesday night
meeting per month. At this meeting they will supply additional
prizes to the first three placings of each race.
Their next meetings are planned for the April 20 and May
18. Fernvale Produce is looking to become further involved
with our club and we ask that all owners and trainers support
their business where possible.
Owners and trainers are reminded that the club will not be
racing on May 10 or 11 due to the Ipswich show. Also no
trials will be conducted on Thursday May 12. The club will
resume racing on May 17.
NERVOUS and excitable dogs are a
perennial problem for trainers.
Dogs with an excel of nerves and
excitement in their make-up leave their best
runs in the kennel.
However, something can be done for
these nervous types and the Vetsearch
company has a formulation for excitable
dogs, incorporating Recharge which
helps many of these nervous canines.
Call Vetsearch on their free call
customer service line 1800 009 847 and
ask could they send information about
the formula for excitable dogs.
For general health and vitality, trainers
cannot go past Feramo-Greyhound as
their foundation supplement.
Feramo is a concentrated formulation
of all the essential vitamins, minerals and
The Performance Report
trace minerals required to maximize
growth, performance, breeding activity and
good health.
Feramo is a foundation supplement to
which other specific supplements can be
added according to your dog’s needs.
Feramo-Greyhound, you can’t beat it.
Go easy with electrolytes.
Many trainers go overboard with
electrolytes and inadvertently double dose.
This may be harmful to the greyhound as its
system works overtime to get rid of the
excess.
The best advice is to stick to the
electrolyte of choice (Beta-Cel) and use as
directed.
This way your animal has the best
chance of running to its potential.
Graham has big plans for Keiloee
GRAHAM Anderson reckons he knows potential in
a greyhound and that’s just what he sees in promising
Cairns bitch Keiloee.
But Anderson reckons the Just The Best-La Belle
Gazelle bitch’s potential is as a broodbitch and he doubts
Keiloee will race much past her 15th to 20th race start.
To time of writing the bitch has already won three in
a row, including a Maiden 1000 in Cairns.
Named after Graham’s daughters Keely, 7, and
Chloe, 5, Keiloee is a daughter of Anderson’s former star
sprinting bitch La Belle Gazelle who at one time held the
Cairns sprint track record until Tropical One came along.
La Belle Gazelle won 25 of her 35 race starts including
19 in Cairns, 18 of them in succession.
Keiloee is from her first litter.
“We had six pups, I kept three, two dogs and this
bitch, and sold the other three,” said Anderson.
The two dogs are racing in the south-east corner as
Expectability and Paradigm Shift and Anderson has high
hopes for the latter.
“We know he is good, but he’s very green and he hasn’t
worked out yet that he is as good as we know he is,” he
said.
While La Belle Gazelle was purely a speed machine,
Just The Best has put stamina into the litter.
“Keiloee will run on for sure, but I’d like to give her
an early opportunity at stud,” said Anderson.
“I want to breed Albion Park dogs and this will be
one way to do it.”
La Belle Gazelle has since whelped a litter of Banker
Hud (US) pups which are not far off being broken in.
“They are magnificent,” said Anderson.
“And we expect her on season soon. She will go to
Surf Lorian.”
Anderson reckons Rick Fall and his Encounter
Kennels deserve heaps of praise in convincing Keiloee
she was the real deal on the racetrack.
“She’s showing that now,” said Anderson.
The Good Oil
I wonder if industry’s chiefs at last
month’s meeting of Greyhounds Australasia
at the Gold Coast were looking for the sort of
changes I mentioned last month.
Here are some more possibilities.
A TIGER BY THE TAIL
I have a suspicion drug detection and
associated penalties have gone the full circle
and now may border on the ridiculous.
From big-time tennis players to country
dog racing, minute traces of certain
substances can result in some people losing
their livelihood and valuable dogs (or tennis
players) being left on the sideline.
An underlying factor in some of these
guilty verdicts is the increasing complexity
of the world around us.
Every kind of food, drink, vitamin,
additive and medicine available to mankind,
and to animals, is coming out in everincreasing
numbers and ever-increasing
complexity.
Manufacturers are always trying to outdo
their opposition with catchier formulas. How
many types of bread does your local
supermarket stock, for example?
Then add the varieties available at the
bread shop across the road. And bread is a
frequently mentioned part of a dog’s diet.
That said, two basics cannot be avoided.
Administrators and stewards have done a fine
job of picking up genuine offenders in the
past decade. The bad old days are well behind
us.
Second, let’s offer no sympathy to dogs
found with significant quantities of go-fast (or
less often, go-slow) drugs in their system.
But I am not convinced someone should
lose his livelihood when a faint trace of a
banned substance is identified in a highly
sophisticated laboratory. Not when it is
possible that it got there innocently.
In what we could call nominal cases -
those where the quantity could not possibly
affect performance - a simple proven-but-nopenalty
decision could suffice. Repeat cases
might attract sterner action.
Yes, trainers all know the rules, or should
do so. But is it all worth the effort in the end?
Not the least of the reasons for some
flexibility in that a great deal of management,
scientific and legal time is expended in
prosecuting and defending the accused. In the
case of genuine abuse, that’s fair enough.
But in today’s complex world, a zero
tolerance policy no longer seems appropriate.
THE LEARNING CURVE
Launceston opened its new circle track in
the suburb of Mowbray just before Christmas.
It’s all part of a new tri-code concept
sponsored by the local TAB (enforced by the
TAB, actually).
More or less, it’s a Sandown clone with
the addition of a 600m bend start, although
the latter is a feature Sandown’s bosses do
not subscribe to.
The club says it’s very happy with the
layout. But I have some doubts. It looks pretty
but, despite all the data and experience we
can bring to bear, a lot of dogs are losing the
first turn.
They don’t do that at Sandown (which has
its own problems elsewhere though). The
home turn is not great either. Genuine hard
railers manage it well enough but others
wander off, doing themselves and other
runners no good at all.
Worryingly, after finishing the race dogs
must make a right turn to go into the catching
pen. To help them take that unusual step, an
attendant stands in the centre of the pen area
madly waving a “bunny”.
As soon as the dogs see it and close in, he
throws it on the ground and leaps smartly to
one side.
Hopefully, all this stops the dogs crashing
into the swinging gate and the attendant
doesn’t cop a broken leg.
In the 21st century, surely we can do better
than that.
More generally, can I suggest to track
builders that they consider the effect of their
offering on the wider dog population.
Too many of our racing trips are seriously
biased against moderate beginners, wide
runners or dogs in outside boxes.
That covers a good half of the population.
You don’t need to design tracks for fast
beginners or railers. They can take care of
themselves. But, if more care is taken to cater
for the rest, two things can be achieved.
First, the economics of dog ownership will
improve as a greater spread of dogs become
competitive and share in the prize money.
Second, races will be run more cleanly and
punters will be encouraged to bet more.
TRUE CHAMPIONS
Can we improve on the National Sprint
and Distance Championships? They are
useful promotional devices for the industry
but are they set up the best way?
In 2004 they again produced winners at
the very top of the scale - In For Life and
Classy Customer.
However, it’s a stretch to classify them as
Australia’s peak events, truly meeting the
definition of a “championship”. Two factors
work against that claim.
First, the fields invariably include dogs
which have no hope of winning.
They are outclassed, especially over the
long trip. Yes, that might happen in any Group
1 event but in the Nationals it’s guaranteed.
Second, it’s arguable that other Group 1
events around the country surpass the
Nationals in quality and competitiveness,
especially Sandown’s Topgun.
Few of those finals see the favourite at
odds-on, as happened in both Championships
at Cannington last year.
As a State of Origin clash the “Nationals”
offer some value by encouraging racing in the
smaller states.
That’s good.
But they never include Australia’s best
eight dogs, or nearly so, which is
disappointing.
You could compare it with a
Commonwealth Games gold medal. It looks
pretty, it’s nice to have and it demonstrates
ability.
But whom did you beat?
There is an alternative. Turn the National
Championships into a more genuine article,
where runners qualified only, say, by winning
or placing in Group 1 events over a specified
period, perhaps on a points score basis to
reduce the impact of flukes.
Runners-up could stand by in case of
injuries. That would virtually guarantee that
the cream of the crop gained their places.
The race would then become a genuine
Grand Final and attract much greater interest
from punters and the public.
Media involvement would also rise due
to the build-up over a longer time.
No such event is scheduled today so it
would be both interesting and innovative.
By all means retain a State of Origin event
but move it to its proper place, down below
the championship category.
a greyhound history, are putting together a
plan to share resources and thereby reduce
costs.
A working party is now handling details
of the alliance.
Already, the AJC and the STC, Sydney’s
major galloping clubs and long intense rivals,
are well down the road to merging several
backroom functions and cutting
administrative costs.
Harness and greyhound regulators are
already under a single administration in NSW
and Tasmania, while their Queensland
counterparts have joint efforts behind the
scenes, too.
On the other hand, there is no real sign of
the NCA and GBOTA (NSW) streamlining
their dual occupancy of Wentworth Park,
although for years industry participants have
been demanding rationalisation and reduced
costs.
One of the parties did develop a
comprehensive plan for a major restructuring
a few years ago but it never saw the light of
day. It was knocked on the head at the
committee stage.
Sydney now sticks out like a sore thumb.
