If the GRA provides 98% ofthe Brisbane Club’s prizemoney, why thendoes the club provide trophies for all itsother feature races? It is hoped management at the BrisbaneClub will see fit to provide a trophy andpresentation to fit the occasion of such afeature race.OWNERS and trainers should take note... from March 1 the summer dress standardregulations cease.Handlers will be required to adhere tonormal post-summer dress standards as perGRA policy.IT is with regret that the Board recentlyaccepted the resignation of steward BobWatkins.Bob has been with the GRA for the past13 years and has commanded the respect ofboth the GRA and the industry in hiscapacity as a steward. We wish Bob and his wife Margaret allthe best in the future and thank Bob for theinput he made to this industry and hisposition

I’d like to answer some questionspresented to the Board in recent times.Firstly, the GRA is a Statutory Authorityanswerable to the Queensland Governmentand bound by legislation including thefollowing Acts of Parliament:* Racing Act 2002* Financial Administration & Audit Act1977* Financial Management Standard 1997* Statutory Authorities FinancialArrangements Act 1982.In addition, the Authority is bound byvarious arrangement and agreements, such asthe Product & Program Agreement, theIntercode Agreement and variousarrangements with Sky Racing and UNiTAB.The Authority cannot therefore act outsideits charter and is required to consult and seekauthority to carry out some functions. In the period 2001 to 2005, the annualdistribution received has increased by$1,687,860.00 or 18.1% whereas the annualprizemoney distributed by the SEQ Clubsincreased by $1,830,551.00 or 37.3%.The number of races would have remainedbasically static.AdministrationThe board is very conscious of containingcosts, but it is necessary to employ staff andto incur costs to carry out necessary functionssuch as ensuring the integrity of the racingproduct, the safety and well-being of theracing animals and participants, the viabilityof the racing clubs and the fair distribution ofprize money to participants. There are five racing clubs situatedoutside the South East Queensland area andtheir needs also must be considered. One third of the participants andgreyhounds are serviced by clubs in the northand more than $1.3 million is directlyexpended by the Authority on those clubs. The income of the Authority is primarilyearned from distributions from QueenslandRace Product Company Limited. The GRA’s share is 9.5% of thedistribution irrespective of the market shareit commands.I have for many years been pointing outto the industry the current distribution formulaseverely disadvantages the Queenslandgreyhound industry.PrizemoneyIn 2004 we did increase prizemoney forplacegetters and introduce prizemoney forfourth placegetters on the TAB tracks and afew years before that when there weresubstantial increases in the prizemoney paidto the winners. The board formed the view the differentialbetween winners and placegetters was out ofbalance, and hence the boost to placegettersin early 2004.Campad Electronics and Seltronics Services26 Keith Street Capalaba 4157Phil BennettThe introduction of fourth prizemoneyarose from the extension of First Four bettingon TAB meetings and recognised that theconnections of the fourth placegetter wereproviding a contribution to the Queenslandracing industry. The Board resisted the payment ofunplaced prizemoney until the cost of fuelrose to such an extent there was concern sometrainers may not travel to meetings. As we are bound by agreements to providethe contracted race meetings and obliged tomaximise turnover, it was felt the reductionof winner’s prizemoney to pay an unplacedrunners fee was justified. The GRA is keeping records of thenumber of races where there are not full fieldsand the clubs will be requested to ensure thesefunds not paid out as a result will be used forprizemoney purposes in other races. The Queensland industry needs to becompetitive with the rest of Australia. It is difficult for Queensland to competewith Victoria in the prizemoney stakes as theyreceive about three times the distribution ofQueensland. They receive Government support and ashare of the poker machine turnover in thatState.PrizemoneyThe Board took over the payment ofprizemoney to reduce the administrative costsof the Clubs. It also ensured the GST deductions weremade, where necessary. It is conceded there is slightly higher costsassociated with the processing of the paymentof unplaced prizemoney but this is notsignificant. The making of the payments by the Clubswould cause administrative disruptions tothem and result additional paperwork for theclubs and trainers.Sub-CommitteesThe board believes it needs input from anumber of sources in relation to some matters. We have recently established two sub-Committees, one on greyhound welfare andthe other for promotion. The welfare sub-committee is canvassingthe views of vets, people involved in GAP,GRA Chairthe Investigative Steward and owners andtrainers who have assisted in formulatingearlier welfare policy documents. The promotional committee is gaining theviews of persons involved in the media to lookat opportunities to further promote the codeand tweak race programming to increaseturnover and greyhound exposure.Race dates cannot just be changed on awhim. The Product and Program Agreementto which the three racing codes are signatoriessets out the timeslots that the racing bodiesmust provide product for. They can be altered but require theapproval of the three control bodies, UNiTABand most importantly Sky Racing.Sunday twilight has been considered butthere are penalty rates payable to staff whichmake the exercise more expensive and theracing turnover on the meetings that we haveheld at this time is not as great as one wouldexpect and would not justify the additionalweekly costs. For many years we have beenendeavouring to obtain a Friday or Saturdaynight timeslot but Sky advise that none arecurrently available.StatisticsI will concede there have been peopleleaving the industry for a variety of reasonsand there is a decline in the number ofgreyhounds being bred and these are aconcern to the GRA.By the same token there have been inrecent years a number of trainers frominterstate relocating to Queensland andbringing teams to Queensland.I am informed by GRA NSW there arenumerous trainers in that State relocating tothe northern part of NSW which may impacton the greyhounds available to the industry. We are endeavouring to attract newowners to the industry by making it easier tobecome an owner or to form a syndicate. The registration cost of a syndicate inNSW is $250 whereas it is free in Queensland.Unfortunately, the advertising ofsyndicates may breach the Corporations Actand require persons in the business ofpromoting such to hold a Securities DealersLicense (such as the large racehorsesyndicaters)Sarah Pringle (07) 54264105 atCOCKATOO LODGE presents ...B itabilityaleBearability-Jindara Bale. The pups werewhelped on November 23 last year.Part five in this series looks at extra uses forold favourites, Recharge and Neutradex.Extra uses, tips and handy hits - RechargeRecharge, the oral dehydration concentratefor greyhounds, is one of the most successfulspecific greyhound products worldwide.Recharge, is the only palatable “sports drink”specifically formulated for greyhounds torapidly replace fluid and body salt losses aftertravelling and racing. It lives up to its name inproviding a rapid restoration of fluid and vitalityafter stress periods. As most trainers are aware of the routine useof Recharge, the following information relatingto its benefits, extra uses and handy hints willstill be of value. Please note: The Get the Factselectrolyte brochure mentioned earlierdescribes electrolytes in detail, includingRecharge, and is available at no chargeby calling freecall number 1800 009 847.Information and benefitsRecharge for horses is not the sameas Recharge for greyhounds. Theformulations are totally different, so pleasedo not use the horse formulation whichcontains extra salt.Recharge for greyhounds is normally wellaccepted when given as a 10mL dose in a250mL (1cup) of cool water as a made-up drink. However, some greyhounds may not accept itinitially in water. In this case, try mixing 50-50 milk/water to improve acceptance, or in puremilk if necessary - bear in mind excess milk ina greyhound not used to it can cause bowelintolerance to lactose and result in low gradediarrhoea and a risk of further dehydration.Recharge concentrate can also beadministered over the tongue by syringe. Thisis the most commonly method given in the preraceperiod and after racing prior to returninghome, particularly during hot weather. Please note:When administering in this way do notexceed 10mL at a single dose and alwaysprovide fresh cool water, or milky water for thegreyhound to replenish fluids. Recharge willincrease the thirst response and fluid mustbe available immediately after dosage. However, avoid providing an excessive volumeof fluid to drink prior to racing, as the raceweight limit may be exceeded.Standard dosesBefore travelling: 5mL Recharge in half a cup(125mL) of water.During travelling: In hot weather for excitablegreyhounds - 5mL Recharge in half a cup of waterevery 1 1/2 - 2 hours. At kennelling: Ensure bodyweight is notoutside the greyhound’s weight limit.Non-dehydrated, quiet kennel greyhounds:Give 5mL Recharge in half a cup of water.Dehydrated, nervous, excitable greyhounds:Give10 mL Recharge in one cup full of water(limit amount to avoid exceeding weight limit). After racing: Give free access to 10mLRecharge in one cup of water prior to returntravelling.ADVERTISEMENTMONEY SAVING IDEAS FORGREYHOUND OWNERSPart 5Cramping greyhounds - dehydrated orexcitable greyhoundsAs well as 100 IU White E daily, 3g Beta-Celdaily, and 10g Calci-D daily in feed, give 10mLRecharge in one cup of water morning andevening. Provide a bowl of made up Rechargeand a bowl of fresh water as a choice in the kennel.Nursing bitches - hot weather, large littersProvide 40mL Recharge in a 1 litre bowl ofwater at all times, with a bowl of fresh water as achoice to replace fluids and electrolytes depletedby milk production.Pre-race dehydration - hot weatherMost trainers know when a greyhound isdehydrated. The slow skin return, the sunken eyes, the tucked up gut are all indicators of dehydration. When this is the case, give 10mL Recharge overthe tongue in the morning and evening for 2 daysprior to racing, provide fluid to drink and moistendry food by soaking for at least 15 to 20 minutesbefore feeding.Judicious use of Recharge provides rapidrestoration of fluid and vitality and helpsgreyhounds stay at the top.Extra uses, tips and handyhints for NeutradexNeutradex, the cream of the crop, is a milddiuretic and acid neutralizing syrup and is anotherinnovative Vetsearch product developed over 30years ago.It helps to combat the effects of acidosis anddehydration in greyhounds, particularly after fastwork. Neutradex contains sodium acid citrate ina highly palatable (caramel flavoured) sugar syrupformulation.Neutradex is a buffering agent, added to themild neutralizing power of alkaline salts, butproviding strong neutralizing or buffering activityagainst acid salts, or build up of acid in the bloodor urine. It acts to stimulate the thirst, provideadditional “alkaline reserves” for fast work. Italso helps to flush the kidneys, particularly aftertrialing or racing. Flushing increases the actionof the kidneys in clearing toxic wastes producedduring hard exercise. Please note: Neutradex should not be givenwithin 24 - 36 hours prior to racing, although itmay be given after the last trial or hard gallopbefore a race. This is because alkalinisation ofthe urine may increase the outflow of potassiumand the flushing effect may eliminate other preracesupplements of iron or B group vitamins, soas to reduce their retention time in the body.Routine useNeutradex is recommended as a routine“kidney tonic” after hard racing. It is notrecommended for every day use because of itspotential to increase the excretion of potassiumby alkalinizing of the urine (see above). The standard dose rate is 6mL mixed into themorning milk (or given by syringe over the tongue)for at least the first morning after a race, andpreferably for two mornings following a hardrace.Trainers should remember that althoughNeutradex is helpful in counteractingdehydration by stimulating the desire to drink,it is not as effective as Recharge in meetingelectrolyte needs and promoting fluidreplacement and electrolyte balance aftertravelling or racing.Beta-Cel, Beta-K, Recharge andNeutradex complement each other and maybe used in conjunction as the occasion arises.Poor appetite after racingGreyhounds not fit enough for the distanceor speed of a race often develop low gradeacidosis in their back and hind limb muscleswhich causes them to “blow up” and swellin the muscles within 30 minutes to 6hours after racing. This results indiscomfort, soreness and loss of appetite.Note: This degree of “sore muscles” isnot the severe form of exertionalrhabdomolysis or “muscle acidosissyndrome” that develops within 12 - 48hours after racing, where the animalrapidly dehydrates and loses body weight. In these more severe cases, immediateveterinary therapy with intravenous fluids andanti-inflammatory agents is required.A dose of 6mL of Neutradex given with 2Rebound tablets over the tongue on themorning after a hard, fast race, will helpneutralize the discomfort and stimulate theanimals desire to eat.In severe cases, a follow-up combination onthe second day, may help re-establish theappetite and encourage recovery after racing.More money saving ideas in part six of thisseries. The (March, 2006) Journal Page 4

LEFT: A youthful AshWilliams with Faust's Legend.RIGHT: Swimming daily ispart of the training routine forthe Williams team.BELOW: Williams with kennelstar Wiedersehen.Ash produces aLegend or twoByDAVID BRASCHANYONE who knows Ashleigh Williamscan vouch for the fact he’s “a pretty goodjudge”.And why wouldn’t he be, because Ash hasbeen around racing stables and kennels sincehe was 20, handling horses and greyhoundsthat rank among the best. Now 60, he has a 28-acre property atWoongoolba where he continues to churn outwinners and high-class gallopers.Born in Brisbane, Ash’s family came fromthe Esk area. His father Arnold worked onthe docks and Ash remembers heading off tothe races just about every Saturday when hewas a little fella.Ash went to Camp Hill High and playingcentre or five-eighth was part of the only openpremiership side the school has won.By the time he was 15, Ash was ready toquit school and take up an apprenticeship asa carpenter. But when he had turned 20 he needed asea change and decided to give strappingracehorses a try.“I worked for the late, great Harry Hattenat Ascot who at the time was training suchtop class horses as Prunda, Basalt and SisterWastle,” Ash told The Journal. He stayed there for 18 months beforebeing coaxed away by then premier Brisbanetrainer Fred Best.“Because I had worked as a carpenter, thetrainers loved to have me around to help fixthings for them,” he said.“I even had a stint with Jim Griffiths whohad flying machines like Emborne at the sametime. Those battles between Emborne andBasalt were something to see.”All this time Ash continued to playfootball. He played for Easts until he was Under20, went to Beenleigh for a couple of yearsand at this time met Peter Bellamy who wasplaying in the same league side.“I spent four years in the stables beforegoing back to building and even had a stinton Thursday Island as captain coach of thelocal side and won the premiership withthem,” he said.Ash didn’t give football away until he was32.While working in the stables in his early20s, Ash, like most other stable workers, wasalways on the lookout for a tip.“One day we ended up at Beenleigh dogsbecause a guy we knew had a couple of dogsin and he said they would win, one of themfor sure,” he said.“We went to Beenleigh for a bet, the firstone landed a good bet, and then the secondone won as well.“We thought this was pretty easy, so mycousin Greg Eaton suggested we get agreyhound or two ourselves.”So Ash bought two pups, three monthsold, from Mick O’Callaghan then one of thestalwarts of the industry in Queensland.“We knew nothing about traininggreyhounds, so Mick gave us a crash courseon what to do,” he said. How often does it happen? Those two dogs, Alpine Ruler and FineEmbrace, were outstanding.“Alpine Ruler won 12 races and was justone-tenth outside the track record at Lawnton, and Fine Embrace won 14 races,” said Ash.“We sold Alpine Ruler for 500 pounds.”It was at this time Ash met up with KevinMcDonald who “taught me everything I knowabout muscle work”.It was also a time when Ash ran foul ofofficialdom in greyhound racing. “It was asilly thing but the stewards were going to giveFine Embrace a ticket for failing to chase aftershe had WON a race,” he said.“I got pretty irate at the inquiry and‘touched’ one of the stewards. I got life.”An appeal to a new Control Board sixmonths later saw the ban lifted. In the early 80s Ash and wife Tess andstepson Jason Strauss headed off to Sydneyfor work.“There was more work in Sydney and alot of work for builders so we moved there in1982,” he said.Ash was not meant to train greyhoundsduring his stint in NSW, but happened to getback into the industry by accident.“I was working at Windsor and a guycalled Graham O’Keeffe said he had a matewith a dog that couldn’t win a race,” said Ash.Cosmo Commisso sent that dog to Ash totrain and it started to win. Big spendingCosmo said he would “buy a good dog” forAsh to train. That dog was Faust’s Legend.“He’s won two races at Bulli when wespotted him and Cosmo bought him for$12,000,” said Ash.In all Faust’s Legend started 68 times for29 wins, 27 seconds and seven thirds. In 1988 he downed Rich Marzipan andCity Skopos to win a semi-final of theAustralian Cup at Olympic Park and Cosmocollected $100,000 in winning bets.“He was a fantastic dog and made thefinals of the Australian Cup, Adelaide Cupand Perth Cup,” said Ash.“I met Brian Kutner in Melbourne thatyear. He was there with Daisy Clover whoalso made the Australian Cup final.”While Faust’s Legend was easily the best“money dog” from the Williams kennel, herates Clover Metre the best he has trained.“He won 12 at the Gabba from 558m to704m,” said Ash. “Adios Prince was anothergood dog we had in the early days and hefinished second to Top Simbi plenty oftimes.”Ash brought his family back to Brisbanein 1992 and has pottered about with a fewdogs ever since. But two and a half years ago he decidedto get serious about greyhound racing againand bought his present 28-acre property atWoongoolba.“It was a harness horse property that hasplenty of natural water,” he said.Ash has since put in a huge kennel block,a 400m straight track that is the equal to any,and has plenty of room to gallop pups.Since the move, the winners have flowedfreely. Jason picked out Brother Ron fromTasmania, bought him north and Ashproduced him to win 17 races and up to topgrade at Albion Park.Brother Jay, In Mode, Unravel and thebrilliant bitch Wiedersehen have beencarrying the flag in recent times.“We’ve got Surf Lorian and Lomond pupsto go on with, as well as those in trainingnow,” said Ash who has given up the buildingwork to concentrate on his greyhoundtraining. For such a small kennel, Ash Williamslands plenty of city winners. But then he’s had a great background inracing to prepare him for such success. The (March, 2006) Journal Page 5

CraigbuildssmartteamBy DAVID BRASCHCRAIG Chandler admits his love affairwith greyhound racing has been an “onagain, off again” affair. At the moment ... he’s in love.Craig, 44, has a small, but everexpandingteam of dogs at his Buccanproperty including the promising SirCyrus a recent Gold Coast, Capalaba andIpswich winner in fast times.Craig’s love of the industry wasinstilled in him by his dad Roy.“Dad and a bunch of mates got a fewdogs years ago,” said Craig. “One of thosewas Agricola Lass who was trained byDarryl Heck and went from fifth grade toFFA class at the Gabba, specially over 704metres.“Everyone had a good time with her.”As is the usual case, one dog led toanother, which led to another.“The boys bred with Agricola Lass andit went from there,” said Craig.By then 19 years old and wanting toget into the swing of things in greyhoundracing, Craig and his father bought a dogfrom Melbourne called Tivoli Tootsie whoeventually won “five or six” at the old GoldCoast track.“And we bred from Tivoli Toostsie,” hesaid. “Got five pups and kept them allincluding Tivoli Gamble who was aLawnton specialist winning 18 of her 54starts.”Craig was training by this time, dadwas left to finance the venture.Saturday (night) April 1Heats Golden Easter Egg (520m)Best 80 plus reserves. A courteous letterthanking a licensee for their time would have sufficed.I came to the conclusion, like many others no doubt, that the decisions were alreadymade and they were only going through the beaurocratic process of “consultation.”I would like to give another example of the “customer friendliness” the GRA are totheir participants. Recently, my wife was paid some prizemoney by mistake. A commonoccurrence, I believe. We only train one dog at the moment and he won his next two races. We assumed they would adjust on the next payment. No. The money had to be paid backseparately. My wife paid the money into the local office before Christmas. We resume racing in the New Year and here is my wife’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”photo on office wall as a Defaulter. Everyone got a laugh but when she went to nominatethe next week she was refused as she was a defaulter.I wonder why no one wants to race dogs in Queensland with a “big brother” attitudelike this.Phil McMillan (Licencee since 1977)The (March, 2006) Journal Page 10

Lynne boughtthe dog soon after.“Ironically, the very day Lynne was at theGRA offices changing the papers over forLincoln Stanley, Joy and I were at the counterrenewing our licenses,” said Ted.Fast forward to October and Ted Le ManJust forthe RecordHere is a small sample of dogs rearedand/or educated atEncounter Kennels &Breaking In Tracksince openingGATCHELO(won 2005 Ipswich Derby 30.65 BT,Alb Pk winner 30.30)RAVENHILL(Won 2005 City of Ipswich GoldCup, Alb Pk 30.30 BT)WIEDERSEHEN(multiple Alb Pk winner, 5 ina row 30.11.BT)SUAVE FELLA(won Maiden Alb Pk 30.27 thensold interstate)JEANIE'S GIRL(winner Alb Pk 600m 35.34,Ipswich 630m 37.70)CredibilityBearabilityKissy BearBitability BaleGrove Whisper*Jindara BaleStar LeeLINCOLN STANLEYNew TearsUltimate WishLauren’s DesireFavourite TimeSpider’s Me MumBrindle CheliLulu Foxwas having his fateful talk to Chicka Scottwho knew at the time that the Ivanovics feltLincoln Stanley needed a small kennel toproduce his best.Lincoln by that time had won three racesfrom 17 starts but had already won in 19.95up Capalaba earlier that month.Ted and Joy bought Lincoln Stanley.“The first time I had a look at him I saidto myself ‘he’ll do me’,” said Ted.Ted and Joy let Lincoln Stanley settle in.They claim having him in a two-dog kennelhas brought the dog out in himself but theyalways knew he could run.“Dogs are 24/7 and Joy and I had decidedwe would like to go out with a winner, havingsome fun, instead of carting slow dogsaround,” he said.Ted also puts a lot of the success ofLincoln Stanley down to the fact he haschanged his feeding routine for the dog. “Isplit feed him, he gets the same amount, buthalf in the morning and the other half at night,”he said.“It has settled him down at night.”While the track record at Capalaba washis highlight, Lincoln Stanley has also wonin 24.28 at the Gold Coast, not far off SurfLorian’s track record of 24.06.Ted says Gyprock Bob was as good a dogas he has trained, but Lincoln Stanley hasgiven him the greatest thrills.“Joy and I are on cloud nine,” he said.“The phone hasn’t stopped ringing, Reg Kay,John Murray, Edna Stafford ... and plentyothers have rung to congratulate us.”Ted is in no hurry with his dog. Cairns Post pics.Gorgas headsBoody plan forA COUPLE of years ago then Mackaybased Ken Boody, his dad Steve, and hisworkmate Brett Oliver decided to get agreyhound together. The initial venture wasn’t much good,so they went looking for a pup. It was hardto go past a South Australian-bred TokenPrince-True Angel bitch they sawadvertised in a southern newspaper. The dam had already produced twofinalists in Group races, and the breederwanted only $2500 for her and includeddelivery to Brisbane.“She was 12 weeks old and her dam hadwon 17 of her first 19 race starts,” saidBoody. “And two of her previous litter hadbeen Group finalists.”Cathy Gordon reared the white andfawn bitch at Coominya Lodge and she thenheaded over to Boody family friend TomNoble to be educated.“Tom had her for six months and evenbrought her up north when he was on hisannual Cup carnival trip late last year,” saidKen.But the bitch did not race, Nobledeciding to educate her around the northerntracks. Now named Gorgas, she had brokenin well and he thought she would developinto a handy galloper.“We had her in one night at Ipswich buttwo races before her race, the lure brokedown and the rest of the meeting was calledoff,” said Ken Boody. “We decided to bringher up north for some low grade races.”Gorgas has since become one of themost promising young gallopers in thenorth having already won a 410m YoungGuns series in Cairns and putting togetheran impressive strike rate. The Boodys have been a racing familyfor many years.“Dad had greyhounds on and off for 20years,” said Ken. “I started only about sixyears ago.”Last year the Boodys decided to sell upin Mackay and move to a 23-acre propertyat Black River near Townsville.“It has registered kennels, a straighttrack and bull ring and suits us perfectly,”said Ken. “It’s so tough to train dogsproperly from a house block.”Ken now has eight in training andGorgas is easily the best, so much so thatshe is already earmarked for a trip back toTom Noble in the future for a campaign inthe south.Gorgas was named by Steve Boodyafter Sir William Gorgas who found a curefor yellow fever. “Dad reasoned that SirWilliam Gorgas did great things, so thisbitch might follow him,” said Ken.Steve does most of the work with theBoody team at Black River while Kenworks during the day.Gorgas is already destined for abreeding future.“She’s so well bred,” said Ken. “Andher breeder Ben Murphy has been keepinga close watch on her progress up here.“He recently rang and asked to buysome bitches out of her when she goes tostud. Bruce TeagueCOPYRIGHT ORCOPYWRONG?RACING NSW CEO, Peter V’landys, rambunctious as ever, is now hell-bent onusing copyright laws to restrict access tothoroughbred race fields. That would cut outwhat V’Landys calls “pirates and plunderers”in the form of the Northern Territorycorporate bookmakers, as well as Betfair. He reasons that would force theircustomers back to their traditional huntinggrounds on racetracks and in TAB outlets. No doubt the lawyers will profit from theforthcoming debates, including a threateneddefamation case from NT bookie Mark Read, just as they have in the SKY v TVN squabble, also generated on V’Landys watch (see July2005 Journal). But will it help racing? One of several possibilities is that theestablishment could win the battle but losethe war.A Sydney Morning Herald article (Dec29) made some telling points about copyrighthistory. First, the installation of photocopiersin libraries in the 1960s and 1970s led to alot more copying of copyrighted material.Publishers of serious or academic journalswere especially dismayed. But later studiesrevealed the new service also led to muchgreater sales of those same journals.“Those most sought after were those thatwere copied the most”.Then in the 1980s Hollywood warned thatthe unfettered use of those newfangled VCRswould be the death of the film industry.Today, despite piracy problems, filmproducers make more money from sales ofvideos and DVDs than theyever did from sellingcinema tickets.Just the other day Iheard singer Janis Ian tellABC radio she startedoffering free music on herwebsite because shewanted more people tohear what she does. That move generated evengreater purchases of other items so she nowmakes more money.More generally, a succession of expensiveand over-complex Microsoft programs hasattracted criticism and prompted a great dealof piracy. This is partly why computer software hasmoved towards free or open-source products,at least at the entry level (internet browsersand Adobe Acrobat Reader, for example).Tweed HeadsCoursing ClubMARCH 4Maiden (420m) $325Maiden (520m) $325Coolangatta Stake (420m) Best 8, $650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 wins, $555MARCH 11Maiden (420m) $325Maiden (520m) $325March Novice Heats (420m) 32greyhounds, 1-4 wins, heats $355Kirra Stake (520m) Best 8, $650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 wins, $555MARCH 18Maiden (420m) $325March Novice Final (420m) winner$500Tweed Valley Sprint (420m) Best 8,$650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 wins, $555MARCH 25Maiden (420m) $325Maiden (520m) $325Best 8 (420m) $650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 wins, $555APRIL 1April Maiden Heats (420m) 32 maidengreyhounds.Border Sprint (420m) Best 8, $650Coolangatta Stake (520m) Best 8, $650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-4 wins, $555APRIL 8April Mixed Final (420m) winner $400Maiden (420m) $325Maiden (520m) $325Border Sprint (420m) best 8, $650Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 wins, $555APRIL 15Maiden (520m) $325Tweed Valley Stake (520m) Best 8,$800Stayers Stake (652m) 1-5 winsApril Novice Heats 420m) For 32greyhounds, no more than 4 wins.APRIL 22April Novice Final (420m) winner $500Legacy Cup (420m) Surf Lorian at Stud,Best 8, $800 plus trophy & free serviceto Surf Lorian courtesy Peter and MavisBellamy.Maiden (420m) $325Stayers Stake (652m) 1-4 winsAPRIL 29Maiden (420m) $325Maiden (520m) $325Coolangatta Stake (520m) best 8, $650Stayers stake (652m) Best 8, $650Phone (07) 55364555 Fax (07) 55366894The Good OilBruce Teague canbe contacted athcoast@idl.net.auAll that encourages people to becomefamiliar with the product and its manufacturer. The SMH article was primarily aboutbook publishers taking the wealthy Googleorganisation to court because it’s now in theprocess of copying every book on the planetand making them available on its website. If history is any guide that will helpbooksellers and authors, not hinder them. That’sstill up for debate but, personally, I have found ithard to curl up on thecouch with a goodcomputer.Meanwhile, I wouldhave thought the best wayto promote racing would be to make it as easyas possible to learn more about it. And justimagine how racing might have profited if allthe energy put into battling rebellious bookieshad gone instead into chasing new customers.Keeping secrets is hard to do in theInternet age.Sensibly, four greyhound States now makefields and at least basic form details freelyavailable. NSW (again!) is the major holdoutbut it is thinking about it.To misquote Samuel Johnson -copyright is becoming thelast refuge of thescoundrel.PRINCIPLEOR DOGMA?Hong Kong, thatbastion of competitionand private enterprise, even under communistrule, is not quite so freeand easy when it comesto horse racing.Apart fromcontrolling who works where and for howlong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is also incharge of all betting and it vehementlyopposes Betfair.Virtual Formguide/AAP reports it fears“backing a horse to lose ... threatens the wholeprinciple of the sport”.But what principle is that? The logic ofthis mantra has always escaped me.In the days when there were a few morebookies around it was common for a “friend”to supply a grand or two to one with whomhe had a good relationship - nominating arunner to lay at a bit over the odds. What you will still hear today are differentbookies coming up with different opinions ona horse or dog. Newspapers regularly quotetheir favourite bookmaker’s “lay of the day”.Some bookies will let you back the fieldagainst the favourite, which obviously meansyou expect it to lose.In other words, backing a runner to loseis routine.Bookies themselves do it every day whenthey take on a big punter. Two blokes in thestreet do it when they have a side bet on afootball match. So does anyone betting on asporting event at the TAB.The logic has also escaped BritishThe (March, 2006) Journal Page 20“The most powerful argumentcountering the critics of bettingexchanges is that the product offered isappealing to and demanded byconsumers. Betting exchanges aresuccessful primarily because they offeran innovative, secure and high-valuegambling product. Even the most vocalcritics of betting exchanges concede thispoint.” The Allen Consulting Groupreport to the CommonwealthGovernment 2003.authorities who can inspect a local websiteoffering to tip you the greyhound “lays of theday”.They have also welcomed Betfair’s abilityto provide betting audit trails, something theTABs can’t do but which thoroughbredstewards in Victoria have tried unsuccessfullyto latch on to (Betfair refused them as RacingVictoria would not sign a privacy agreement). The commercial value of Betfair isanother subject but the integrity argumentbeing pounded out by the Hong Kong cluband by Australian gallops chiefs is so phoneyyou wonder how they think they can get awaywith it.Unfortunately, many casual readersbelieve that stuff. Not so The Allen Consulting Group, inan independent report to the Commonwealthfor the review of interactive gambling in 2003,where it stated “such activities (as backing arunner to lose) have been possible to varyingdegrees for a long time, particularly in horseracing”.Back in Hong Kong, the clincher comeswhen you find that following a drop inturnover the club has temporarily reduced itstakeout from the usual 17.5% down to 10%for win-place-quinella bets.Apparently illegaloperators have beenpinching too muchbusiness and HKJCwants to get it back. However, there’sno change to thewhopping 25% ittakes from morecomplex bet typesbecause the illegalpeople don’t have thepractical means ofoffering them.Authorities in Australiaand Hong Kong are avoiding the real problem. In mature markets, effective takeout ratesof 16% to 25% for various bet types, on topof a never-ending string of rules andregulations, have two effects.First, they make it difficult for genuinepunters to make profits and instead forceracing to rely more on mug gamblers whodon’t know the odds.Second, they make low-takeout optionslike Betfair, sports betting, poker machinesand even on-line poker games look muchmore attractive.Racing has made a rod for its own back. That’s why wagering has experienced along and continuing loss of market share inboth Hong Kong and Australia. This phenomenon is not limited to racing. The same thing happened to many of theworld’s oldest airlines, several retail chainsand a string of car manufacturers, includingthe once-mighty General Motors, nowdesperately trying to avoid bankruptcy - theygot too expensive, they offered the wrongproducts and they did not move with the times. Now they have either disappeared or theyare in big trouble.

By DAVID BRASCHIT’S been more than 30 years since JoeCavanagh trained a greyhound ... but in themeantime he’s had some of the best dogs seenin the state. How can that be, you may ask.Joe, who is 61 this year, got his first dogin 1969 and at one stage soon after wastraining a team of 12. But since 1973, Joehas left the training of the dogs he has ownedto someone else ... usually his great friendJohn Reimer. And the combination of Cavanagh-Reimerhas produced more than its fair share of topflight gallopers. But Joe is back training. He has bred alitter, and has three of them in work. And ashe nears retirement, he admits he’s lovingevery minute as a trainer.Cavanagh has lived most of his life in theIpswich area. In 1969 he bought a bitch calledJoely’s Choice from top local greyhound manRoss Spencer.“She didn’t win a race, but unfortunatelyfor me I had the choice of two from the litter, and the other one, a dog called Big Magic, held a track record at the old Capalaba trackand started hot favourite for a Lawnton Cup,”Joe told The Journal. “I can’t remember if hewon or finished second in the Cup.”It was pretty obvious Joe Cavanagh wouldget involved in greyhound racing.“Right from a kid, I can remember helpingout Bill Maguire with his dogs. He lived overthe back fence from my family.”Joely’s Choice might not have won a racebut she ran a few placings and got Joe hookedin the industry.“I took up training and at one stage hadup to 12 dogs in work based at Booval, at theback of Bundamba racecourse,” he said.“Guys like Graham Heaton and VivIllingsworth had dogs in the area at the time.”Racing in those days was at Lawnton,Beenleigh, Capalaba on the old track and atTweed. When night racing started up, Joe reckonsthe industry here was not forward enough tobenefit from it. “Dogs in Queensland werebred for sheer speed, and not to run 558metres,” he said. “And trainers here never hadto prepare their dogs for constant 558mracing. The bloodlines of the local dogs didnot cater for such racing.”Joe reckons that, more than anything, waswhy southerners could easily come north withsecond raters and win at the Gabba.“The Gabba totally changed greyhoundracing in this state.”While the Gabba started in 1972, Joe wasretired from training by 1973.“I went into business in the takeaway foodand catering business and eventually by 1985I was managing hotels, firstly at PeakCrossing and then Nobby on the Downs,” heWalloon, IpswichWhere good rearing doesn’t cost, it pays.Top trainers use & recommend our showcasekennels as they know only the best will do.Vacancies available for . . .WHELPING, REARING,SPELLINGPuppies get lots of handling andsocialising, Quality fresh food,Regular worming.Natural rearing available onrequest. By Royal Rumpusfrom Melbourne Cup winner Rustic Venture, she was to be a breeding goldmine.“Ted O’Connell and I were in thesyndicate and eventually we put her toBogenfel and from that litter got HaylewieMiss, Our Blue Chip, Bogan Venture,Keeping Royal and Purga Peak Miss,” saidJoe.Purga Peak Miss raced for Joe. “I trainedher for a very short time in 1990, but askedJohn Reimer to take her over and he got herto the final of the 1991 Coca-Cola Cup at theGabba,” he said.“She’s also the last winner I have trained.”Purga Peak Miss, under Reimer’sguidance, won a host of races at the Gabbaand was successful when racing switched toAlbion Park.“Unfortunately she dropped a backmuscle. From Our Blue Chip came Sheena’sGold, winner of 13 races with 11 of those atAlbion Park. It keepd Joe going.“Of course I’ve had a heap that didn’t evenmake the track, but mostly we’ve been lucky,”he said. “Those that won’t make it here go tomy mate John McNamara at Proserpine.”By 2000, Joe was back in town ... BoovalNorth. “I’m starting to think about retirement, but there are a few projects at the hospital Iwant to finish first,” he said.Which is why he has decided to get a smallteam of greyhounds together. “I racedStrawberry Lane and she showed heaps ofpotential; winning five of her 20 starts butshe broke down and we put her to stud.”The bitch is a half sister to Italian Princessthe dam of star sprinter Vesuvio. Joe put hisbitch to Reimer’s former star sprinter GreatRaider and got a litter of five, two for JR andthe other three retained by Joe.It is those three pups that form the teamJoe now has in work, his first since 1973.“They are all showing ability,” said Joe.“John Reimer is a great mate. Andrew ThomsonVictoriaLetterto theEditorDear Sir,BALLARAT owner Darren Murrayand trainer Cameron Taylor are enjoyingthe ride of their lives. The dynamic duo have Melbourne Cupwinner Closing Argument and WarragulCup victor Vapour Whirl firing in the leadupto the Australian Cup.Vapour Whirl won the Warragul Cup ina sensational 23.74 and has picked up 15wins from 25 starts. His other best winning times include theMeadows 29.74, Geelong 25.60,Healesville 18.61, Horsham 27.13,Warrnambool 25.11 and he finished third inthe Cranbourne Cup behind Pororoca intrack record time.Murray rates Vapour Whirl the quickerof his kennel stars.“I’ve had a lot of good dogs over theyears but never had two in the kennel thisquick at the one time,” he said. It’s also interesting that both sprintersare not by highly fashionable sired, ClosingArgument by Exceptional and VapourWhirl by Ashigga.Murray said Closing Argument trialled25.14 between races at Ballarat in the lead-up to the Australian Cup.“The chances of one of them winningthe Australian Cup would have to beenormous,” he said.“They can both break 29.80 at theMeadows and there’s not that many whocan do that."Vapour Whirl is faster than any dogI’ve had but Closing Argument is a betterrace dog because he just begins everytime.’’Murray said Taylor only had 10greyhounds in work with about 15 pupscoming through. He said he believed the key to theExceptional pups were letting them maturebefore they were broken-in.“I’ve got a few more coming throughwho are going all right and they’ll winraces,” he said.“You have to give them time to grow upor you can break them down. I think anawful lot of them haven’t been given theopportunities they needed to show theirbest. You need to leave them until they’re atleast 15 or 16 months.’’Murray said Vapour Whirl was out of asister to former smart sprinter JimmyNeutron while Closing Argument went backto Queensland’s Sheza Nightmare line.Murray previously trained BraydenShiraz which briefly held the Sale trackrecord before later breaking both hocks.“Closing Argument is out of a sister toBrayden Shiraz,” he said.“She raced in Darwin and I managed toget her back. The Quick FIX !!!The past few months have consistentlyseen the Gold Coast, Albion Park and Ipswichclubs having to extend the normal nominationclosing times in an endeavor to fill theirprograms. The simple answer as to why this ishappening is that there is a smaller pool ofdogs available to fill the clubs programs. Why, you may ask, is there a smaller poolof dogs available? The answer lies within the historicaldecisions made by the industry over the years.Ray BurmanGBOTA News1 Closure of Lawnton. The closure ofLawnton “killed off” a large percentage ofthe northside trainers.2 Closure of Toowoomba. The closureof this track “killed off” a large percentageof the Toowoomba trainers.3 Closure of Beenleigh. Once again theclosure of this track “killed off” a largepercentage of the trainers in this area.4 Cancellation of QBIS. The breedingindustry is, by best reports, down 30%. Thiscan be primarily attributed to theabandonment of the Breeding Scheme. The situation can be fixed if there iswillingness by the administration to work withthe industry to put a plan in place for itssurvival. The administration cannot fix theindustry without the licensees and likewisethe licensees cannot fix the industry withoutthe administration. It must be a TEAMeffort.I challenge the GRA to meet with thelicensees in a structured open forum to outlinetheir plans for the industry and get somefeedback from the licensees for the survivalof the industry.Marketing CommitteeThe introduction of the earlier treble racesand the Monday night maiden races being putback to races nine and 10 does not appear tobe working at this stage, although it is stillearly days yet. This association is particularly concernedat the maiden races being programmed so lateand questions why they could not beprogrammed as races five and six as is thecase at Ipswich. It is hoped the suggestion of one of themembers of the Marketing Committee toclose down the industry for a month will notbe adopted by the GRA. I would think theowners and trainers who rely on the industryfor an income would not be too pleased withthis suggestion.ZukkedConnections of Zuko must have beendisappointed they were wrongly graded as a5th grade dog and then disqualified afterwinning. The disappointments would have turnedto smiles after the GRA did the only honorablething and paid the connections the firstprizemoney. The rules should be changed to ensure thisnever happens again. Trainers should beallowed to protest the grading of a dog, however, this should only be allowed priorto the race and not after the race is run.BeenleighThe trial track at Beenleigh closed at theend of January.Efforts to keep the track open by thisAssociation have not been successful. The cost of repairs, maintenance, waterand Public Liability insurance would exceedthe income from trials by a large amount. He approached the boys at his localbutchers and asked to buy the bone dust thatgathers around the saw blade when butcherscut meat.“The boys call it bone dust, but it includesfat and meat as well as the dust from cuttingthrough the bones,” Olsen told The Journal.Health regulations prevent a butcherselling the bone dust, but Danny Mitteregerand Jamie Dimitrievski from Wulgura MeatMart get around that by giving it to Olsen fornothing.“The fact I drop up there once a monthand leave a carton of beer is appreciated atthe butcher shop,” he said.So while rearing the November Fury-Absolute Chaos litter, one of the pups, a fawndog, was reared on a quarter of a pound ofroo meat, a pound of “bone dust” and hisnormal kibble.“The others in the litter got only a fewounces of the bone dust,” said Olsen. That fawn pup grew into a magnificent36.5kg dog of explosive speed. And his racingname naturally had to be Bone Dust.To time of writing, Bone Dust has started12 times for 10 wins and a recent impressiveYoung Guns victory at Townsville stampedhim the most exciting young galloper in thenorth.Since being put into work, Olsen has cutthe bone dust in the dog’s diet back to just afew ounces. In every state the highlight of thecoursing season was the running of theWaterloo Cup.The Victorian Waterloo Cup had a longhistory going back to 1873. In the years before1953 only six greyhounds had been able towin the event twice. All were considered champions,Rhodanthe (1883 and ’85), Bloomer (1893and ’94), Ella Goldsmith (1908 and ’10),Brown Hawk (1916 and ’17), Father’sFootsteps (1930 and ’31) and Kreuger (1934and ’35).Byamee was to win the VictorianWaterloo Cup a record three times! In 1953, as a puppy, he divided theVictorian St Leger with his sister Rarcambaand then took on the older dogs in theWaterloo Cup at Bendigo. He performedbrilliantly through the event and defeated TrueScamper in the final. The following year the Cup wasconducted at Tynong. Once again Byameedominated and won the final against GallantPlume. In 1955 the Cup was staged atMaryborough and a large crowd gathered tosee if Byamee could create history. He didn’tdisappoint, completing a unique hat-trick withvictory over Wanalta Chief in the final.Byamee’s owner, Ray Herbert, was alegend in sport. His wins included sixVictorian Waterloo Cups, three NSWWaterloo Cups, three Victorian Derbies andthree NSW Oaks.Apart from Byamee, his most famousgreyhounds were Silver Chief, Some Laddie,Orion, Ariki, Ever Dandy, Karween,Coonega, Yarloop, Menang and Tarryhere.Byamee (Yarloop-Tarryhere, by SilverChief) had a very interesting pedigree and onethat is testament to the great influence RayHerbert had on the breed.Herbert owned both his sire Yarloop andhis dam dam Tarryhere. He also ownedYarloop’s sire, Menang and dam MoonshineMaid as well as Moonshine Maid’s parentsGrey Friar and My Lady. Herbert bred GreyFriar (Kreuger-Silvermane), a half brother tohis champion, Silver Chief (by Pharminda)who also appears in Byamee’s pedigree asthe maternal grand-sire.The most striking aspect of Byamee’spedigree is that linebreeding to Silvermaneand Pharminda, both 4x3 crosses.Silvermane’s brother Cliff’s Pride alsoappears in the top half of the pedigree givinga 5x5x4 cross to both parents, Cubby andShady Burn.It is probably one of the best examples ofthe Rasmussen Factor at work. i.e.linebreeding to a bitch, or in this case twobitches, Silvermane and Shady Burn. There was a lot of quality in Byamee’sdamline. His mother Tarryhere (Silver Chief-Lassalla) was an outstanding coursing bitchwinning the 1949 Victorian Waterloo Cupand dividing the 1948 NSW Waterloo Cup.She was also the dam of the influentialbroodbitches Luckyhere and Rarcamba.Luckyhere was the dam of championcourser Merrileigh Prince (1959 VictorianDerby, 1960 Victorian Waterloo Cup) andOakleigh Here who divided the 1956 SAOaks.Oakleigh Here bred on and can be foundbehind many fine performers such as Sonny’sWindfall, Chukka Khan, Swanston Roi,Condominium, Cool It Pop and MelmadeGazza. She also appears in the damline ofSuemara, a line which has been verysuccessful for Neville Robson withrepresentatives like He’s Allegro, SpiritedCopy, Genuine Scandal, Go Series, BlueSeries, Kapalga, True Boy, Allegro Jet, BluePisces, Cadency King, Hot Treasure, Cruz Proand Sottie Allover.Rarcamba’s daughter Trail View made amark on South Australia’s coursing classicswith the success of progeny such as Civic Bev,Civic Topsy, Civic View, Proud Paddy andCivic Sunbeam.Tarryhere’s mother Lassalla (Quanialla-Percyton Lass) also produced Okere (1949NSW Oaks) and the good performerNerinyerie who bobs up in some goodpedigrees through his daughters, e.g. ChinaLane (grand-dam of Thunder Lane).Lassalla was a sister to some top classgreyhounds including Percyton Lad (1943 SADerby) who became one of the mostsuccessful coursing sires in the history of thesport.Byamee’s sire Yarloop (Menang-Moonshine Maid) was best known forwinning the Melbourne Cup on the speedcoursing track at Napier Park.Although probably considered just ahandy sire overall, Yarloop also sired theoutstanding bitch Karween who the 1950NSW Waterloo Cup, 1948 NSW CoursingOaks, 1949 Woodstock Cup, divided the1948 Victorian Waterloo Cup and ran up inthat same event in 1951.At the time Byamee was retired to stud, mechanical lure racing was about to begin inVictoria.Byamee had been a great champion on thecoursing fields but there was a query overwhether his pups would adapt to themechanical lure or if they would be justcoursing greyhounds.Consequently he didn’t receive as manybitches as he might have in an earlier era andwas represented by just 102 litters. At studByamee sired Copeland (1961 Australian Cupat North Melbourne), Dalemee (1961 BallaratCup), My Riant (1956 Victorian CoursingOaks), Slippermee (1959 Bendigo Cup), TheJink, Bogamee, Gay Gambler and CheethamLad.It was a fair return but it gave no indicationof the impact that Byamee would have whenthe progeny of his daughters appeared on thetrack. The most famous of Byamee’s daughterswas Byam Rose, one of Australia’s greatestbroodbitches. Her progeny included Saskaview (1963Melbourne Cup (Spk), 1963 AnniversaryHdcp (Opk), 1963 Sandown 500, TRWentworth Park 580y, Olympic Park 560m),The Stripper (1964 Australian C’ship(Hpk),1963 Holiday Hdcp (Spk), TRSandown Park 565y), Sungari (1960 and 1961Sandown 500, TR North Melbourne 425y),Saskagay (1962 Melbourne Cup (Spk)), PineMulga (1960 Puppy C’ship at NorthMelbourne, TR Sandown Park 565y), HaremBelle (1965 Wangaratta Cup, TR Harold Park500y), Fast Talk (TR Sandown Park 785y)and the classy sprinter Bandar Prince whosired the champion, The Smoother.Saskaview, The Stripper, Sungari andPine Mulga all had success at stud althoughthey weren’t represented by large numbers oflitters. The Byam Rose damline has continuedto breed on. Stars like Pretty Fearless, LordTegimi, Hot Spell, Worth Backing and Ding’sWonder were from this line while recentlyTraction Control, Jennev, Rare Aussie andMr Faithful have kept the flag flying.Bylane (Byamee-Belinda Jane) was thedam of the outstanding sprinter Fawn NullaThe (March, 2006) Journal Page 26

He told me he was going to get rid ofthe pup.”Murray jumped in to “save” the pupoffering to buy him for $500 a good price forany pup in those days.“Claude was a cunning old devil andagreed to sell me half the pup who would beraced by my wife Ruth and Claude’s daughterGlenda.”That’s how Windsor Charm came to be.Initially the dog was trained by BobPywell at Frankston and while the dog wonraces for Pywell, eventually GlendaSkipworth sold out of the dog.“Ellen Shines, whose husband Allen wasone of the great personalities of greyhoundracing in Victoria, bought Glenda’s half sharein the dog and it was to be a great move toAllen’s kennel,” said Murray.“The Shines had a lot of dogs on theirproperty but Windsor Charm lived in theirhouse with them,” said Murray. When Allen Shines took over the dog’straining, he produced him 27 times for 18wins breaking a number of hurdle trackrecords and winning the Sandown ParkHurdle title.“He hated other dogs, but loved people,”said Murray.“The reason he was switched to hurdleracing was because he had plenty of abilityon the flat but would dwell in the boxes.“And just about every week he raced overhurdles, he would meet the same oppositionwith the exception of maybe one or two newdogs.“And he was better than most of them.”Cheerful ChariotWhich Chariot*Which SideChariot CharmSunviewThat’s SunnyThat’s FineWINDSOR CHARMSunviewSaskaviewByam RosePrincess KerryDasher’s BowRomany RoyalPhilaurieUnfortunately Windsor Charm collapsedand died after a trial, but not before winninga hurdle exhibition at Wentworth Park andthrashing top class opposition in Hobart andLaunceston during a “working holiday” theShines had.Murray Mingins has been in racing all hislife. He started riding in his home country ofNew Zealand, came to Australia to work forPat Murray, of Tails fame, and even rode thatgreat galloper in trackwork. “He was like aRolls Royce,” he said.Murray and Ruth moved to Rockhamptonin 1982 following Ruth’s parents who hadbeen there for a few years.“We’ve been to the dogs in Rocky a fewtimes, and I even drove the mobile barrierfor the trot meetings up here for a couple ofyears,” he said. The couple still retain their WindsorCharm memorabilia. generationsof Townsville greyhound racing.Daniel didn't have a choiceDANIEL Miles didn’t have much say in the matter. He was destined to be a greyhound trainer from the first few months of his life.Daniel’s mum, recently elected Townsville Club president Kate Miles, rememberstaking a then few weeks old Daniel greyhound racing in Cairns. But Kate and her husband Gary has a similar history in racing.Gary’s mum Beryl, now 76, has been a long-time stalwart of greyhound racing inthe north.“Beryl was one of the first with a greyhound when racing started in Townsville allthose years ago,” said Kate.Kate Miles has had a long history of involvement in the running of greyhoundracing in the Townsville area. She was president of the local owners and trainers association for two years, hasbeen a member for as long as she can remember and is still on the committee,She has also served on the Townsville club committee for some years, spent a timeas vice-chairman and is now president.“I’m there to help, always have been,” she said.“I want to keep things moving at the club, keep racing rolling along. This is theleading greyhound racing centre outside the south-east.”The Miles have a small team in training, with Daniel, 23, holding the reins. Most are from a Scottish Express-Lighthouse Girl litter and include recent CairnsMaiden 1000 winner Bally Rattler and littermate Tears Of Delight.Dam Lighthouse Girl was bought as a maiden from the south by Daniel’sgrandmother Beryl and headed north to win “eight or 10 races”.It is the bitch’s first litter.“Beryl has won a lot of races in the many years she’s been training,” said Kate.“And she’s always had a dog in two in training.”Daniel has followed in the footsteps of his family.“Right from the time he was little he would come walking the dogs with us, but bythe time he was in high school he really got interested,” said Kate.Daniel too is a member of the Townsville Club committee.Kate’s plans for the club centre on its success.“I believe our push for TAB coverage of greyhound racing in Townsville mustcontinue,” she said.“We’ve been after this for the past 10 years and will keep pushing for it.”Townsville is a major racing centre.“We always get trainers from Cairns, and often from Mackay and Rockhamptonracing here. And they keep coming back,” she said.Kate works for a local transport company but jokes she doesn’t let that interferewith her obligations to the greyhound industry. It runs in the family.Kennel of Dreams back bigger than everCould you be the ultimate fantasygreyhound trainer?Greyhound Racing Victoria’sinaugural on-line virtual competitionKennel of Dreams, launched lastOctober, has returned bigger and betterin 2006.Building on the success of Kennel ofDreams that was conducted throughoutthe 2005 Superdogs Series, this timearound races and greyhounds from rightacross Australia will be involved.Beginning with the AJS AustraliaCup at The Meadows on March 4,Kennel of Dreams participants will needto select a team of greyhounds that willscore them points across 19 other majorgroup races (including six Group 1’s),finishing with the Maturity Classic atThe Meadows on May 20.As with last year, participants willhave the opportunity to compete againstevery other player in the competition, aswell as competing just against friends inyour own private league. This year will also see participantsable to go head to head with a celebrityexpert tipster, and see how yourgreyhound knowledge really stacks up.Entries into the Kennel of Dreamsclose at midnight on Friday 3 March, ready for competition to begin with theAJS Australian Cup the following night.Participants will be able to changetheir kennel of greyhounds throughoutthe competition, in one of the fourdesignated official trade periods. Upon inspection of severalgreyhounds, it was discovered the ear brand forRhythmic Affair had been recorded on the registrationcertificate for the greyhound known as Superlative. The ear brand for Superlative Q4239 - 74B wasrecorded on the registration certificate of RhythmicAffair. Stewards noted they were from the same litterand had very similar markings. In discovering the mix-up in certificates, it wouldappear stewards and club officials incorrectly identifiedSuperlative, which competed in Vince Curry qualifyingtrial 19, at kenneling, prior to the trial and at theconclusion of the trial. The ear brand recorded on the registration certificateof Superlative was Q4239 - 74B with the brand in thegreyhound’s ear reading Q4239 - 74G. Stewards notedboth greyhounds had been cleared to start by a GRAmarking up official.Stewards are not satisfied the greyhound known asSuperlative did compete in trial 19. Stewards actingunder GAR R11 (28) disqualified Superlative from theevent.Stewards ordered new registration papers beproduced for each greyhound. No further action will betaken. The amended placings in heat 19 are: 1 WestarInvader, 2 Time To Give, 3 Doc Jamieson Win.The (March, 2006) Journal Page 34

Lucky for Olsen he did.The litter is exceptional and while onlywinning short course events to this stage, they could not be more impressive andincludes recent 544m Cairns Young Gunswinner April Fury, as well as boomTownsville speedster Bone Dust.April Fury downed littermateSaltwater Pete to win the Young Gunsfinal.“Tom wasn’t going to breed with thebitch, but Tom also doesn’t want to missout on anything, that’s why he took a fewpups from this litter,” said Robert, whosewife Judy owns and trains April Fury.Tom got two of the November Fury-Absolute Chaos litter and one races asbrilliant sprinter Absolute Fury already awinner at Albion Park.“He’s also got two that qualified for thesecond round of the Vince Curry,” saidRobert. “One of Tom’s pups hurt a toewhen he was a baby, so we sent himanother one on a half share.”Absolute Chaos has since gone back toNoble for her second litter, by Big DaddyCool of which the Olsens have two. She willhead back north for her next mating andthis time Robert plans to send her toBombastic Shiraz to continue the BlackShiraz sireline.Of April Fury, Robert says no-onewanted the dog as a pup because he wasthe runt of the litter.“We got stuck with him, but he hasreally come on and looks to be the one thatwill run distance,” he said. “While the restof the litter, specially Bone Dust, werewinning over 380m at Townsville, he wasalready up to the 498 metres.“But he really blossomed when westepped up his distances.”The Olsens have prolific winner Oweyracing in the Noble kennel at Albion Parkbut plan to bring him home when the richcountry cups circuit gets underway midyear.“But dogs like April Fury will be greatfor those races as well,” he said.Bone Dust is the star of the litter havingwon 10 of 12 starts (to time of writing).“But April Fury will get 600m andmight even run further,” said Olsen.
