Bruce TeagueAGE SHALL NOTWEARY THEMWho knows more about dogs than masterconditioner Jack Irwin? Here’s something he told the GreyhoundRecorder recently: “Dogs are capable ofrunning their career best at four and a halfand five years of age if you keep them soundand happy”.The same article featured a smart 29.48win at Dapto by the five-year-old Angry’sImage. So why do we seldom see older dogsat the track?Obvious barriers might be loss ofkeenness, injuries or the consequences ofover-racing. Mind you, there are alwaysexceptions. At three years and nine months,Smack Wallop has just led all the way in bothheat and final of the $25,000 Bendigo Cupover 430m.A quick scan of 500 racers in the threeEastern capitals reveals that only 3% weremore than four years and a further 5% morethan three and a half. Quite a few of thosewere stayers. Some have had relatively fewcareer starts, perhaps indicating earlyproblems. Many pick up the odd placing butfew are winnersGenerally, my own observation is thatmost seem have lost a bit of early speed bythe time they reach this critical point. Theycan still run just as well over the entiredistance but they tend to get cluttered up atthe start among all the eager youngsters. (Iknow how they feel - I have the same problemgetting going in a game of tennis). On the rare occasion when a club puts ona “veterans” race, these fellows display alltheir better qualities. Races are keenlycontested, form is reliable and interference isgenerally low. These dogs know their wayaround!Betting is always good, too, because thepublic know them well. So why don’t we havemore such races?I’ve written on this subject several timesover the years but the answer has always beena deafening silence. More’s the pity. This is yet another area where everyonein the industry, especially owners, couldbenefit by stretching the dog’s economic life. And the dogs must enjoy it; otherwise theywouldn’t do it. It’s a win-win-win prospect. To answer the challenge, one solutionwould be to make it compulsory for every clubto stage a veterans’ race at a minimum of 50%of all meetings for at least a year. That wouldgive everyone time to build up interest, perhaps attract sponsorship, and hold backoldies that might otherwise be put out topasture.BEST OF THE BREEDLast year I mentioned that average racetimes had not changed too much in the pastdecade. That’s still true but track record times areanother matter. Records have tumbled at morethan half of a sample of a dozen leading tracksin the past two years - see Table page.A good deal of that can be put down toone dog - Awesome Assassin. His mostfamous son, Whisky Assassin, is responsiblefor three records, and one atthe now-closed Shepparton, while Collision and Paua TBurn have one each. Then Token Prince siredboth Chilli Bear and theunpredictable Pororoca(record holder at the GoldCoast, which, like Ipswich, is notlisted due to the lack of a suitable comparativetime).Just The Best produced another two in BigDaddy Cool and Surf Lorian. The biggest reductions came at TheMeadows, Horsham and Bulli where morethan two tenths was knocked off the old times. Why then are the average times remainingmuch the same? Well, TAB tracks now seemuch more racing at the lower end of the scaleand those events dominate the mathematics. However, excellence in breeding is stillcoming through at the top end. The majorityof city winners - or even starters - are comingfrom a handful of leading sires, including thethree above. There’s no stopping quality. It’s interesting to note, though, that mostof the dogs listed here are average or riskybeginners, which contrasts with the earlier eraof Head Honcho dominance. Paua to Burnand Big Daddy Cool would probably be thenippiest of the present bunch. Still, they’reall mighty gallopers once they get going.WHAT’S IN A NAME?Last year I chatted to the folks atGreyhounds Australasia about the number ofbadly spelt names being allocated these days, despite the naming rules claiming “the StudBook demands correct English”.This had nothing to do with catchy namesor combinations of the kids’ names or namesof Indian chiefs. I pointed out examples ofnormal English words which had simply beenspelt wrongly. It’s a subject that has grated on me eversince I had to keep on typing Prince O Thiefsinto my computer. The dancing fingers andthe spellchecker just didn’t like what theywere being told to do.But it still goes on. No, not for the horses but for“fashions in the field” prizes, part of a fourearbuild-up of the AJC’s “PrincessesWelcome” theme.Marketing is now all about parties on thelawn. A few small bets are OK, but it’s themarquees that count, not the races. Even theblokes are buying new suits for the occasion. It’s reversed the trend of dwindlingcrowds through the 1990s when home or clubSKY viewing won out. That’s still a problemat mid-week meetings when the partygoersare back in their offices. But profits are up and membershipinquiries increasing so the AJC is very happy.CEO Tony King told the Herald his marketingpolicy now was to “Leave it to the youngsters. We’ll be guided by them”. The Gold Coast’sMagic Millions meeting works somewhat thesame trick with holidaymakers, too.In Melbourne, they don’t mind a party for100,000 or so either. I think I was cheering louderthan Roger.”It was money well spent.Gozo Farmer gave tearaway leader Ella’sReward a big start but ran it down to win by aneck. It is two years since I wrote about nervous andexcitable dogs, so it is timely to review this topic anddiscuss what can be done to soothe the edgy canine.Nervous and excitable dogs are a perennial problemfor trainers who are aware many dogs with an excess ofnerves and excitement invariably leave their best runsin the kennel. Unless something can be done to alterthis trait, especially for dogs with ability, their racingcareers are understandably short. First, some interestingnews. In August 1999 in an article published in TheJournal in Queensland, Dr David Auer and co-authorsoutlined the problems of stress in the kennelledgreyhound. Titled The Effects of Kennelling as aStresssor in Racing Greyhounds, they analysed thevarious factors kennelling has on excitable dogs. Theiropening paragraph stated: “Stress is recognised as afactor that affects animal health and performance, butthe concept of stress is a complicated one involvingbehavioural and physical mechanisms.” This is apowerful statement experienced trainers can identifywith. The article covered behavioural problems, kennelnoise and environment, weight loss, kennelling timeperiods (is behaviour better or worse in later races), age, race experience, the effect on winning rate, or placingrate and beaten margin, association between racingperformance and behaviour and more. Winners tendedto show fewer behavioural signs in the kennels thanlosers (18% versus 28%). Another important point isthe longer the dogs were kennelled, the larger the weightloss. Maximum weight loss recorded was 1.2kg. Theaverage was 0.19kg but 14% did not lose any weight.Barking, chewing at the kennel door and salivating werethe most common problems.Readers will be surprised to know the findings ofthe authors in this experiment involving 221 greyhoundsrevealed “there was no significant relationship betweenthe frequency of the measured behaviours and racingperformance in the greyhounds in this study.”Many trainers will disagree through cold hardexperience and look for ways to help their caninespeedster perform its best. What can be done to help?In many cases something can be done to modifythis behaviour to achieve a more optimistic outcome(better race result). Sometimes things help, sometimesnothing helps.Dr John Murray, a specialist greyhound vet, usedthe Crazy Dog Formula with a fair degree of success.Dr Murray says dogs settle down after a meal just ashumans do and the snack provides a balance againststomach acids associated with excitement and stress. This can be especially helpful for dogs kennelled early, but drawn to run late in the program. The original Crazy Dog Formula included Aminolite 34x. Dr Heather Burton and I discussed analteration to the Crazy Dog Formula which isinexpensive and should have appeal to all trainersof nervy dogs.Stress, including that related to travel, heavyexercise, racing, kennelling and environment areimportant reasons why the Nervous Dog Formula shouldbe considered.Just the same, trainers should be aware each case isan individual one and response will vary. It also goeswithout sayingthey should watch theweight. This isn o tusually aproblem asbarking, panting, nervous dogsare prone toweight lossand can, inextremecases loseup to a kiloor morew h e nkennelled,so themixturemay beuseful tocounter thisloss. Here it isHere is our suggestion, with comments later on.100-120ml port wine1 dessertspoon of sugar5-10 mls of Recharge3-4 oz meat, raw, grilled or microwavedAdd 1/2 to 1 cup of milk at the last minute as theport wine will curdle the milk. Mix into a slurry andgive to the hound before leaving home. The port winehas a settling effect. Depending on the weather, thismeal can be served with cold or warm milk.Other Good TipsGive 1 x Rebound tablet (an excellent source of Bgroup vitamins and vitamin C) in the morning feed theday of the race. This has a beneficial effect as stress, hard work, regular racing and travel increase the needfor B complex vitamins and vitamin C. Rebound tabletssupply these important nutrients and help vitality, maintain the appetite and aid recovery after exercise.Give 2 x Beta-K tablets over the tongue about 4ADVERTISEMENTNERVY DOGS APERENNIALPROBLEMhours before racing.Recharge is well known to trainers. It is rich inthe electrolytes that count and as it is common for dogsto lose large quantities of fluid and electrolytes duringtransportation, exercise and stressful situations,Recharge could be just what the Doctor ordered -especially for nervous and excitable types.Recharge rapidly replenishes lost electrolytes, sochronic dehydration, muscle cramping and loss ofperformance are kept to a minimum. This formulationis specifically matched to meet the needs of hard workingdogs and includes: (1) a high potassium to sodium ratio(very important for nerve and muscle function) (2)Citrate salt, a buffering agent that delays the onsetof cramping and tying up (3) asmall amounto fglucosewhichenhancest h erapiduptakeo felectrolytes.Anotheruseful tip, courtesyof Dr JohnKohnkeand the lateR e gHoskins, intheir booklet,TalkingGreyhounds is to add 1 - 2tablespoons of extra fat (eg: lard, suet, meat trimmingsor fresh cooking oil) to help make up for energyshortfalls. The extra fat, combined with the electrolytes, will also reduce the risk of dehydration. In Dr Kohnke’s notes the folly of giving freepotassium salts such as potassium chloride or potassiumcitrate in the food was highlighted. This is not a goodway to use potassium as fed this way it floods into theblood and is excreted through the urine in a few hours. Thus, the beneficial effect is quickly lost and notavailable when you need it most. Beta-K is best.It is always important, especially for nervy, hardworking, panting types to ensure an adequate supply ofcool clean water.Vitamin E (White E) should also be utilised as it isespecially valuable for nervy types and those prone tocramp. White E is a pure source of naturally derivedvitamin E, the most powerful source of vitamin E.Usual dose for dogs in work is 100-200 IU. Dr Kohnkesays “of all the vitamins fed to greyhounds, vitamin Eis the one that probably gives most benefit toperformance and stamina”. He also said “for highperformance it is next to impossible to get enoughvitamin E in the diet alone. Extra supplementation isnecessary for best results”. White E is a worthwhileaddition to the diet of any greyhound, especially thenervous type. A reminder ... DON’T give vitamin E atthe same time as iron as this has a harmful effect onvitamin E.The Excitable Dog Formula is a genuine attemptto soothe the edgy canine and the additional tipssuggested are with affordable extras which most trainershave on the shelf. Anything which will help thehyperactive dog perform better will be worth a try.Let the Buyer BewareMy article about Caveat Emptor a short time agoattracted a lot of interest. The advice then and now is tothink carefully before using dubious preparations andunless there is some genuine proof to support their useI would have nothing to do with them. It is always bestto stay with the tried and true preparations made byreputable companies.A good example of let the buyer beware washighlighted in Focus, The Australian Doctor magazinein March 2004. A product called Anabolic Water (heavywater) was examined and reviewed and put to the test. This product was reported to do many things, includingbuild and rejuvenate tissue, plump up skin cells, protectcells from high temperature and radiation damage andmore. This so called super-energised water sells for$US28 for 4oz. After careful examination of theory, research and other matters, David Woods, manager ofradiation protection at The Australian Nuclear Scienceand Technology Organisation said: “For all intents andpurposes, heavy water is chemically identical to the goodold garden variety water. It has no added benefitswhatsoever”. Good Stuff! The (June, 2005) Journal Page 6

Itwas the only reason he bought the blue dogpup by Go Wild Teddy-Secret No More. The fact the pup’s dam had been abrilliant sprinter during her race careerwinning the Maitland Gold Collar andbeing a finalist in the Singleton SprintChampionship helped as well. And second dam Don’s Regret was alitter sister to legendary bitch Flying Amy.That helped Len’s cause as well.Len sent his pup, his sixth Auctionpurchase since 1989, to Coominya Lodge tobe reared and at 14 months he went toPostman’s Ridge to be educated.“He’s the fastest they have broken in atPostman’s Ridge in the 11 years John andSharyn Collins have been at the track,” saidLen.Don Paco scorched around there in18.19secs for 300m.When Len went looking for a trainer, itwas Collins who suggested he approachRoger Green.“John said if you’ve got a potentialGroup 1 dog, then you need a trainer to gowith it and he suggested I ask Roger Greento take him,” said Len.Roger won eight of 14 starts with DonPaco.“Roger brought him back one morningfor a 300 metre trial just when he put himinto training,” said John Collins. “Hetrialled 17.51 which is the track recordhere.”Roger told Collins that Don Paco wasthe best dog he had trained, better even thanhis Melbourne Cup winner Roanokee. But after 14 starts, Green thoughtotherwise. That’sprobably 12 years ago now.”The pair became friends.“Out of the blue Ces asked me if hecould have a drive of a harness horse.”That has since developed into a fulltimepassion for Paul Graham.“I can’t believe him,” Prowse says ofhis mate. “He’s up before dawn to walk hisdogs, then comes to Albion Park and worksmy horses with me, then he heads backhome to Doomben to let the dogs out, backhere in the afternoon for the horses again, and finally home for his dogs late in theday.”A year or so ago the pair got talkingabout buying a greyhound together.Peter Callaghan had bred a litter by GoWild Teddy-Kilkenny Rose and Ces hadthe pick of the litter if he wanted.“Graham suggested we get a syndicatetogether and buy one,” said Ces. “I wasgoing to buy a bitch, but when I saw theblack dog pup, I just had to have him. Hewas the dominant dog in the litter.”The pup was “about five or six monthsold” and the syndicate bought him for$1750.“We put him through the IpswichAuction to have him eligible for the race, and the boys decided to buy another onethat day. We got a Solve The Puzzle bitchwhich now races as Gimme A Clue,” saidCes.Mike Chapman reared the pair andinstantly won a fan in Paul Graham. “Theydo a great job out there,” he said. “I’venever had sounder dogs.”The Go Wild Teddy dog, now racing asTijuana Teddy, is outstanding.Offers of up to $20,000 have alreadybeen refused and his performance in theAuction final when second to Don Pacowas exceptional. He suffered worst from first turninterference, hitting the running rail andbeing pushed into the air. To get secondwas an amazing effort.“He’s only a young dog, but he’s got alot of ability and enormous potential,” saidCes. He ran a flying 30.57 to win a Auctionsemi-final and his record (to time ofwriting) stands at seven wins and eightplacings from 23 starts.Paul Graham trained Alf’s Ablaze towin 23 races, run a Beenleigh track record, win a Rising Star Classic at Beenleigh andbe Gold Coast greyhound of the year.“Alf’s Ablaze was a great box dog, butTijuana Teddy is very strong and gettingbetter at the boxes all the time.”Ces has been in dogs for 35 years. “Igrew up around the Tyack family atWindsor and they always had dogs,” hesaid.Graham Prowse got back into harnesshorses when the new Albion Park track wasbuilt. His best has been It’s Elliot the onlypacer to win from a 60m handicap atAlbion Park.He ran second in a Sunshine Sprint.Uluvit was also outstanding for the stable. He has four in work, but has becomeCes Graham’s regular greyhound “catcher”.Gimme A Clue, the other dog raced bythe “Cegar Syndicate” has won three timesincluding once at Albion Park and made thesemi-finals of the Auction series. The boys have since bought a Just TheBest-O’Shanti pup now being educated.Of Tijuana Teddy, the boys have greatexpectations.Initially he was named Wild Lionel, butthe boys were having none of that.“We wanted him to be named ReubenCarter, but the registrar in Victoria knockedus back on that,” said Prowse.“We put in about 20 names, and finallythe registrar named him Wild Lionel. Trent Thorley andFive Cougars.BACK in 1999, by his ownadmission Trent Thorley “spatthe dummy” on his fight career. The three time Australian titleholder in light welter andwelterweight divisions, andwinner of 62 of his 73 amateurfights, he had every reason to feelaggrieved when he missedselection for the Kuala LumpurCommonwealth Games.“I had one more fight and spatthe dummy, gave up my fightcareer,” Trent told The Journal. While one career might hadfinished, Trent picked up ongreyhound racing and hasn’tlooked back since.A Queensland Rail employeein Rockhampton, Trent hasknown former Rocky dog clubpresident Bernie Mieztal foryears.“Bernie and Neville Beattiewould get me along to the dogsregularly,” said Trent. “So whenI gave up fighting, I decided toget a greyhound to train.“I was always big on commitment andtraining greyhounds gave me thatopportunity.”Trent didn’t wait long to get a dog thatcould gallop.“The first dog I trained was Herd’s Lawwhich won nine races,” he said. “But he lovedracing on grass and we would take him downto Bundaberg all the time to race.“He’s the one who got me started.”Trent got to know Richard Featherstoneand Phil McMillan and that pair helped gethim started.“I’ve been on and off in the game for thepast five years,” he said. “I was transferredHave A LaughA greyhound was looking through a fencewatching a game of cricket. “Any chance ofa game?” he asked the captain. At first thecaptain was taken aback by the talking dog,but when it insisted it was keen to play theskipper thought it might be a bit of a laugh ifhe sent the dog out as opening bat. The dogshaped up to the first ball and slammed it overthe boundary for six. He did the same withthe second and third, indeed every ball he hitfor six until the over ended. He had beenpartnered by the captain, and when the bowlerran in from the other end and the captainmanaged his first hit for a meagre single hecalled for the greyhound to run. But the dogjust stood there. Frantic calls by the captainto run were ignored and in the confusion theskipper was stumped out. “Why didn’t yourun?” roared the captain. “Listen mate,” saidthe greyhound, “if I could run I would be atthe track today, not messing around with thiscricket game.'Bit of a hobby'now a passionto Gladstone for a while, but I’m back inRocky again and with a small team.”In the past smart gallopers like Ten ToGo, winner of 16 races for Trent and agreyhound of the year in Rockhampton, havebeen great moneyspinners for the kennel. He now races recent Mackay Cup finalistFive Cougars (Brett Lee-Tranquil Scene)which he got from the Paul Felgate kennel.“He was a replacement dog for anotherPaul sent to us but didn’t work out,” saidTrent.Trent had been in Bundaberg campaigningBluey Skywalker a dog Felgate had bred.“Paul mentioned to us he had bred the dog.I bought him from Dallas Beckett for $600and he won 12 races for us and was second ina Young Guns in Bundaberg,” said Trent.“We struck up a friendship and Paul hasbeen sending dogs since.”Trent admits greyhound training is “a bitof a hobby”.A fourth grader, Five Cougars chasedhome Ella’s Reward in a Mackay Cup heatand then had no luck when badly checked atthe first turn in the final behind Gozo Farmer. He has won three races and been placedseven times in a brief career for Trent.HistoricGalaxyHarry Pledger came up with thename of Galaxy in 1970, Galaxymeaning “Gathering of the Stars”.Richest non-TAB race in Australia.First running of the Galaxy was in1971 with King Doolittle winning for$1000 first prize and trained by LesHampson of Gosford.Only two dogs have won twice,Ebony King in 1974-75, trained bypublican Gwen Edwards of Richmondin NSW and Mint Magic 1999-2000 forRay Watson of Maitland.Trainer Graham Beh won it twice, with Society Romeo in 1980 andBorder Tracker in 1982.Most successful trainer is DennisReid who won three times, in 1994 withTravelling Ghost, 1996 with Gotta beSolid, and 1998 with Golden Clover.Stud dogs to come out of the raceinclude: Ebony King, Golden Spur,Society Romeo, Kununurra, MisterBiggles, November Prince, Yannick,Brutess, Travelling Ghost, BitabilityBale.Great matrons have won the raceincluding Miss Perlita, Mint Magicand Sobbing Sal (mother of Brett Lee),as well as prolific producer Gotta BeSolid.STATS:QLD - 7 WinsNSW - 23 WinsVic - 4 WinsQuickest Time: Mint Magic 23.06Track Record 1999.Bookmakers fielding: 12-14bookmakers back in 80s (now 6-8)Prizemoney: $30,000 to winnerplus Trophy + Rug + Free Service toElite State. Lyn's goldenboy landsCairns featureBACK in January, Townsville trainer LynRandall had one greyhound in training. That’s since built to a kennel of six andLyn is starting to make big plans. It’s all because of a dog called WyzeeIsland who only a few weeks ago gave Lynher biggest thrill in greyhound racing whenhe won the time-honoured Golden MuzzleMaiden at Cairns.A former Victorian, Lyn and husbandNorman brought their seven member familyto Townsville four years ago.“The weather,” said Lyn. “It’s the reasonyou leave Victoria.”Her father Tom Pearson came with thefamily. Tom has been training dogs for yearsand instilled the love of greyhounds into hisdaughter.“We’ve always had a dog, and had a bitof success over the years, but Wyzee Islandis the best,” she said.Lyn’s husband Norman was back inVictoria, at Hayfield, and met up with friendand greyhound breeder Len Freeman.“My husband mentioned to Len that if hehad a dog he thought would race well in thenorth we might be interested in buying it,”said Lyn. “Len gave us this dog.”Wyzee Island (Lilli Pilli Lad-Misty Sal)had already had a couple of starts around Saleand Traralgon. He arrived in Townsville in January.“I fell in love with him ... he’s a big sook,”said Lyn.Wyzee Island immediately showedability. “He’s improved so much in our smallkennel and I think he has a big future.”Wyzee Island won his heat and final ofthe Golden Muzzle Maiden beating a field ofpromising northern youngsters including StanMontague’s Abit Twisted who he had ratedbetter than his famous Tropical One.Lyn’s kennel has now built to six. “Myfamily are great and I wouldn’t be able tochase races like the Golden Muzzle if it wasn’tfor them.”She is planning to breed with a bitch calledTascosa.“My son Robert found out she had beensent to the pound,” said Lyn. “We rescuedher from there and won a few races aroundTownville with her.”Lyn says the Golden Muzzle is her biggestrace win. “Hopefully it is not the last.”New TearsLight Of FireCentrefireLilli Pilli LadAcacia AblazeTranquil FlamePlacid DoveWYZEE ISLANDBogenfelJurassic VapourBlack VaporMisty SalFarloe Melody*Chanta RubinTenthill FlyerLyn Randall and herGodlen Muzzlewinner Wyzee Island.Golden Muzzle (410m)Cairns1 WYZEE ISLAND $5(Lilli Pilli Lad-Misty Sal)Owner-trainer: Lyn Randall2 ABIT TWISTED $2(Bitability Bale-Tropical Twister)3 SHOCKING LEE $2.50(Trendy Leigh-Shocking Pink)Others: 4 Miss Personality $6, 5 Bent AndTwisted $2.80, 6 Absaluteme $7, 7 GypieRover $10, 8 Plugmatic $4.40.Time: 24.44.Hot CoupleHave a laughA guy at the bookie shop goes to the screens and checks the prices of the next race. Thereare only two greyhounds in the race and it seems pretty uncompetitive as the favourite is 10-1 on and the other is priced at 40-1 against. Nonetheless, he makes his way to the counterand asks to place $500 on the outsider.Being a friendly sort, the bookmaker tries to put him off the bet and assures the customerthe outsider has absolutely no chance against the favourite but the man is insistent anddemands the bet be placed. The bookmaker tries again to convince the man he’d be losing hismoney but eventually agrees to take the bet and gleefully deposits the money into his till. They both then watched the race on the television and, horror of horrors, the favourite runsteh worst race of its life and the outsider cruises home. The customer was straight back to the counter and demanding his winnings. “No problem,”said the bookmaker, “I will happily pay you what you have won” and counted out the $20,000.As he did so, he confided to the man, “You are amazingly lucky - between you and me, Iactually own the outsider that you bet on and he is so slow, even I didn’t back it”.As he collected his winnings and made his way to the door, the lucky punter replied,“That’s a coincidence, I own the favourite!”PARK RIDGEGreyhound Complexa friendly and caring environment• 12 acre property close to Brisbane• Pups handled with loving care• Pups kennelled and led at early age• Pups pre-trained prior to break-in• Spacious and shaded runs• Balanced diet using top quality fresh food• Programmed worming and flea treatment• 3 acre galloping paddock and dam• 320 metre training track• Bull penLot 35 Smith Rd,Park RidgePhone(07) 32000172MobileMike 0411 326605or Rachel 0401 085757www.parkridgegreyhoundcomplex.comAdding considerably to the glamour of Mackay Cup final day was localradio star, HotFM's Teeges who presented the trophy to winningconnections after Anyway Sally's win in the Maiden 1000 Final. The (June, 2005) Journal Page 16

He’s hadmore than his share of success with themand prepared Shapely Lass a year ago withgood success.“Shifting Spanner is a good railer andI thought he had a chance,” said Dale.“Scoop The Pool has torn a back musclethree times and he needed two or threemonths off, but he is such a nice dog wehave kept him going.“I really thought Miss Marples couldwin the race, but she was having her firstrun over the distance and she just neededthe run.”The winner is raced by harness horseidentities David Litzow, Shane Toppingand David Rodger. Dale’s wife Marie racesthe placegetters. The trifecta, with the only three dogsDale has in work, is an achievement Daleis proud of.Dale Mortimer (right) needed plenty of helpers the night he provided thetrifecta in a 630m race at Ipswich with the only three he trains.Awesome Embrace beats Classy Creek in the Ipswich/Gold Coast Challenge final at Ipswich.Pick-me-upROBERT Olsen needed a bit of a pickme-up.A couple of months ago Robert wasrushed to hospital after suffering a heart attackat work. Sir James holds on to win at the Gold Coast (above) and with trainer DenisGuppy (right) who never lost faith the dog would make it to the track.Battle won longbefore he madeit to the trackIT might have been only a 401mmaiden at the Gold Coast on aWednesday afternoon, but to many itwas a momentous day. It’s the day Sir James (Just The Best-Ultra Queen) came back from the deadto win his first race ... the race was easyconsidering the battle he had won just tobe at the Gold Coast that day.Raced by Tony and Jane Apap, andnamed after their late close friendJimmy Grundon (owner of Kirsty’s Firstand Magic Gull), the white and fawn dogwas whelped on April 7 in 2002.At breaking in he was a sensation asyou would expect with his noblebloodlines ... by the champion sire fromthe dam of Group 1 winner Short Model.“John Collins couldn’t believe howquick he was when we first startedtrialling him as a pup, and it wasn’t longbefore we started to get offers for him,”Tony Apap told The Journal. Those offers got to $15,000 for thethen 14 month old.“But we were not tempted to sell,”said Apap. “He’s such a lovely dog, greatnature and with his pedigree and theway he had broken in, it looked like wehad a potential stud dog.”The pup went into training andshowed all the blistering pace the Apapsknew he had.“But he got crook and started to loseweight,” aid Tony. “No matter what ourtrainer did, the dog just kept losingweight.”Sir James came home to The A Teamat Gatton.“Eventually he fell away to skin andbones,” said Tony. “He was on a drip forages.” Denis Guppy is a great friend andknowing just how good the dog hadshown at education, offered to take himseveral times to vets for help.“Richard Eaton-Wells told us hethought he had an infection around theheart,” said Apap. “By this time the dogcould not even get up off his bed. All hewould do all day was sit in his kenneldrooling from the mouth.”Apap was ready to give up but wifeJane and daughter Nina would havenone of it.Vet Graham Beh suggested a twomonthcourse of ultra-powerfulantibiotics that would bombard the dog’ssystem in a bid to catch and kill justwhatever it was affecting him.Sir James spent six months as theApap house pet, wandering about theproperty ... still skin and bones.“It was a long, long time before heeven got out of a walk. And when he wasstarting to get cheeky and playful, he stillhad to build up his muscle tone and thenwas like a young pup learning to gallopagain,” said Apap. Most would have given up monthsbefore.“It took ages to get him back up tolooking like he was before all theproblems,” said Tony.A couple of trials didn’t producemuch. “I took him to Postman’s Ridgewith a bunch of pups one morning andhe trialled just moderately,” said Apap.“I was going to give up, but tossed him inthe following week and he improved fivetenths.”That’s where Denis Guppy came in.“I decided to give him to Denis totrain ... well Denis wanted him. He’s verypatient with a dog and Sir James wasjust the dog who needed patience.”Guppy had Sir James for months, bringing him along slowly. He was badlychecked at his debut, at Albion Park, butthen won at the Gold Coast.“It’s unbelievable to see him alive letalone race,” said Apap. “It was a verysatisfying day.“Unfortunately, after all his problemsthe dog can’t get any further than 400metres. But there are a few more wins inhim yet.”That’s better than anyone wouldhave expected a while ago.Pups For Sale40 acre property provides ...* Spacious galloping paddockswith dams and shade* Quality feeding and wormingprogram* Pups taught to lead at anearly age and handledregularly* All pups kennelled beforebreaking in* Excellent facilities availablefor whelping littersZ ammit'sRearing andSpelling Farm'If you want yourpuppy to havegood nutrition, plenty ofgalloping andconstant care, take advantage ofyears ofexperience withinthe industry andgive it the beststart in life onour farm'GEORGEZAMMITFor any information, pedigrees, faxes, e-mails or photosContact George Zammit (07) 54266209The (June, 2005) Journal Page 21

Gary ClarkNew South WalesTHE faith shown towards onegreyhound has been rewarded with a Groupsuccess for Neil Delany coming whenTwisted Angel took out the LadiesBracelet. For 29-year-old, Delany this was a nighthe had only dreamt about. It was only whenhe saw her name on the honour roll in apublication a days later that it hit home. This is one of those real battler’s storiesof two people who believed in their dogand then tried to convince someone else totake up the challenge. After weekly phone calls and truepersistence, Neil Delany Snr and Jnr finallytalked trainer Brian McKivat into takingTwisted Angel. Her form had slipped andshe had been out on a seasonal spell and ittook some convincing, McKivat said.“I like people who believe in what theyhave, so I decided to take her (TwistedAngel),” Brian said.Young Delany purchased Twisted Angelas a pup from Brain and Dianne Alford. She was one of 13 from the litter. It’s apurchase that may not have happened asson and dad were set to buy another dog butdidn’t agree on the price. The rest is history.Twisted Angel had won four races aatRichmond and Wentworth Park from 25starts before coming on season. Her citywin was on Ladies Bracelet final night2004.After winning first-up for McKivat onhis home track at Goulburn, Twisted Angelwas given her chance in the QLD Futurityand after running second in the heatfinished fifth in a hot final.McKivat took her to Angle Park and shetrialled 29.66 before having little luck therethe following week. Her future looked to beas a stayer but now she has won theBracelet, Delany and McKivat will chase anumber of ideal races in NSW and QLD.Renzo Park(Formerly known as Simpson's Spelling Kennels)Spelling - Rearing - Pre-trainingOffering you and your valuable greyhounds aLIFETIME OF EXPERIENCEin the industry! Some of the trainers who have trusted uswith their dogs over the years ... Andrew ThomsonVictoriaYOU would think Steve Kavanagh hadgot used to winning big races. But when Ace Hi Rumble led throughoutto win the recent $50,000 WarrnamboolClassic Kavanagh could not contain his glee.Kavanagh is best known as the man whoput the polish on legendary Brother Fox.He’s also won an Australian Cup withSmooth Rumble and more “ordinary” racesthan he can remember.Ace Hi Rumble was a convincing threeand three-quarter length winner fromkennelmate Perform Magic with gun sprinterLukeamy another length away third. The victory sealed a stellar night for theCranbourne-based trainer Darren McDonaldwho had half the greyhounds in the $50,000-to-win Classic final.Ace Hi Rumble escaped a scrimmage onthe first corner which resulted in the NormMcCullagh-trained Dark Rhode and TonyLockett-owned Where’s Hoover falling.Dark Rhode broke a leg and was putdown, while Where’s Hoover recovered towin in Melbourne a week later.Owner Kavanagh, who boasts more than30 years of experience in the greyhoundindustry, said he continued to be surprisedby Ace Hi Rumble.“He’s been improving all the time in theseries,” he said. “It wasn’t that long ago hetore a stomach muscle but that wasn’t goingto stop him. He keeps improving all the time.“I always knew he would be a good dog.”Kavanagh has had a long association withClassicAceLockett and the AFL ace bred Ace Hi Rumble(Brett Lee-Rumble Spirit).Kavanagh said his chaser had found formwith McDonald and would continue to bebased at Cranbourne.Meanwhile, Sun Hero’s trainer TomDailly claimed his sprinter had “white linefever” after becoming the third quickestgreyhound to go around Wannon Park.In the process Sun Hero clinched the$20,000-to-the-winner Warrnambool Cup(450m).The three-year-old chaser brushed asidea class field to clock 24.96 seconds in his 20thGroup final appearance during the past 12months.“He’s just one of these dogs you can putin any race and he never disappoints,” Daillysaid.“He performs every time he goes around.”Sun Hero had to survive a bruising startafter copping some interference exiting theboxes but he soon found the rail and stormedto a length-and-a-half win from White Riverwith Trewly Hot four lengths away third.Sun Hero’s performance built on recentwins in the Group 1 Perth Cup and theWarragul Cup.“From 65 starts he’s never disappointedus,” Dailly said.“He’s the hardest chasing dog you couldget. You can talk about footballers with whiteline fever and he is exactly the same.“He switches on like you wouldn’tbelieve. He’s just a freak of nature,’’ he said.TotallySeriousBlack Dog, Sept 2000, 30.2kgs.Ashigga-O'shanti by Head Honcho150 starts, 33 wins, 39 2nds, 22 3rds.$100,000 in stakes.Albion Park: 20 wins, 34 placings.Winner also at Capalaba, Ipswich,Gold Coast, Tweed Heads.Fee: $500Contact Barry and Sharon Morris(07) 54261966Also Standing: Travel Train $500.MalawiMalawi's PrinceDuchess MarinaAshiggaBlack PirateAtwellZoomerTOTALLY SERIOUSWalkabout SidHead HonchoFitzroy LassO'shantiMalawiRaheen's PrideRaheen StarTotally SeriousBy the sire of ProvenSmokey, Maldon Magic,Tropical One, Asha, TearsFor Rome, Tally Bale,Saying Goodbye, BlackPrecision, Cawbourne Mimetc.Totally SeriousOut of the damline that hasproduced championsMancunian Girl, BentleyBabe, Arvo's Express,Brookside Red, Blues Cluesand Tom's Legacy. Also from this damline is:Amico Mio, Miss Ezra,Sagres Gold, Three States,Akubra Girl, Sagres Mist,Wild Chaos etc.Totally SeriousPerfectly suited to theCredibility and Just TheBest bitches so prevalent inQld. CongratulationsRecently I had the pleasure of helping onthe GAP stand at the Pet and Animal Expofor two days.I would like to congratulate KirstyO’Brien and her dedicated team of helperswho made the three day effort to bring theGAP Program into the public arena.I would go as far to say our stand was oneof the most popular at the Expo, with thepeople showing great interest in learningabout what great pets these dogs make.Thank you also to the committee of theMackay Club who recently invited me toattend their Cup final.Might I say it was a great day indeed withall the sponsors attending and enjoying a freshseafood lunch. The hard work of the girls ofthe committee certainly paid off which wasevidenced by the large crowd in attendance.Foot slogging leaflets around and personalvisits to prospective sponsors paid off wellfor the girls.Once again may I say a big thank you andcongratulations.Kerry Watson(Deputy Chair)GAP CalendarThe calendar is dedicated to thewonderful volunteers and valued sponsorsof the various Greyhound AdoptionPrograms across Australia. It allowed themto pat these pups and see greyhound pups ofvarious attractive markings for the first time. The reaction of the public made the effortto arrange this display by the many greyhoundsupporters worthwhile. The genuinecomments and admiration by the public of thepups was heartening. All local TV news stations that night madea point of focusing on the greyhound sectionand gave them wonderful coverage. Those who paraded and were resplendentin costume included John and Beverly, PaulDolan, the Joneses, Turnbulls etc etc, most,if not all, leading an adult greyhound. Thiswas just one of the many promotions carriedout in those days by volunteers to promoteour industry and negate the usual knockers. Most are still around today, but where isthe new breed that usually steps in to takeover promotion? Obviously they are a dyingbreed as nothing like those promotions takesplace today. Most are not aware the GBOTAis still alive and kicking. In fact, the industry needs a shake-up,particularly the administration for notshowing the way in promoting greyhoundracing as it should be promoted. That peoplecan be in a job too long is a fact of life. Theloss of energy and commitment is what standsout. The industry should be lobbying for achange at the GRA to get new drive andenergy back. The state of the industry is mirrored inthe coverage our sport gets. It is only whensome controversy happens that we get mediaattention. The greyhound section in Saturday’sclassifieds in The Courier-Mail was thebarometer as to how the industry wasperforming, full columns of pups and dogsfor sale, plus other ads for equipment, foodsand trainers etc.Have a look now!Going by the one or two ads at the most,it would indicate the industry is not travellingwell and could be heading for extinction.Closing of tracks, harassment of ownersand trainers through Rule 106 ... many fineand honest people have been crucified by thisrule when a miniscule amount of a drug whichwould not affect a flea is used as a fund raiservia hefty fines.Try getting a racebook at the variousoutlets which were once available to punters... impossible. The fault lies with well-paidclub managers. To find out what dog has won a race inQld, punters have to buy Tabform for $4.95to get form and results. The long suffering industry participantsface a constant barrage of price increases. Wehave had four from the meat industry in thepast 12 months, petrol rises weekly, stud feesare reaching for the stars ...Developers are offering big money foracreage properties and so the breeding poolgets smaller and smaller as these bigproperties sell out. This, of course, will lead to another trackclosing, until finally only one remains andsome will say that is what consultants KPMGsuggested in the report “Toward 2000”,commissioned by a past GRA Board. The (June, 2005) Journal Page 28

This isto be applauded however there is a majorcomponent of any business that comes beforeany sponsors can be brought on board andthat is MARKETING.In recent times there have been FREEoffers made by various “universities” to puttogether a marketing plan for the industry, these offers I believe should be taken up toIpswich/Gold Coast Distance ChallengeFinal, 630m, $1500 to winner5th Grade Final 520m5th Grade Heats 431m5th Grade 630mGraded as requiredJULY 5Highland Smash Repairs Maiden Heats 431mHighland Smash Repairs Maiden Final 431m5th Grade Heats 520m5th Grade Final 431mBest 8 520m5th Grade 630mGraded as RequiredJULY 12Highland Smash Repair Maiden Heats 431mHighland Smash Repairs Maiden Final 431m5th Grade Final 520m5th Grade Heats 431mBest 8 520m5th Grade 630mJuvenile 520m or 431mGraded as requiredJULY 19Highland Smash Repair Maiden Heats 431mHighland Smash Repair Maiden Final 431mIpswich/Gold Coast Distance ChallengeHeats4th/5th Grade 630m Best 16- Final at IpswichJuly 26 - $1500 to the winner.5th Grade Heats 520m5th Grade Final 431mBest 8 520m4th-5th Grade 630mGraded as requiredlook at the opportunities of marketing ourindustry to “Joe public” and also the potentialsponsors.Marketing is a major component of anybusiness with a budget of approx 5% ofincome. The GRA spent $25,000 onmarketing last financial year which is less thana quarter of one percent (.22%).The marketing of our industry is anecessity. By not marketing we are allowingthe marketers of other industries to take ourcustomers.Preferential box drawsThe preferential box draws have been inplace at Capalaba for some weeks, and fromall reports is working extremely well.I happened to see a few of these racesrecently and they were trouble free. Theresults of this trial may result in a few moreraces a week being allocated to includepreferential box draws.Next MeetingThe next meeting of the QGBOTA willbe held at Albion Park on Monday June 6,starting at 6pm.MembershipApplication forms for membership areavailable from the offices of the GRA or bycontacting any of the committee or myself on0413755251.
