Learning and Teaching
Sean Riordan
This week I had the pleasure of supervising a
Year 9 class. It was interesting to watch the
class dynamics, and the routines that the
classroom teacher had clearly developed with
these young men at such an early stage of the
year. The lesson began with some revision of
the work covered in the previous week as well
as a general check of homework activities.
This particular class, Year 9 Carey, is using a
Homework Grid. The grid identifies weekly
tasks and includes opportunity for student
choice and extension. The grid also includes a
‘Spelling List’ and a place to record reading
completed by the student across the week.
Many parents will be glad to note that the grid
also includes some optional exercises that
include ‘assisting around the house’. I’d
invite you to take this offer up should your
son make it.
Students then checked their responses to their
‘20 Word Spelling Challenge’. Rather than
the teacher providing the answers, two
students were active in leading the class
through this activity. Students then worked
through a unit from ‘English Skills Builder’
which developed their understanding of
clauses through opportunities to practise.
Further, students were assigned some time to
read a novel of their choosing. There was an
array of very good novels at a range of levels.
The classroom was also configured to allow
opportunities for group and individual work,
and these were employed across the course of
a double lesson.
I was encouraged to see the diversity of
activities and the engagement of students.
All of this was taking place while the noise
and business of classroom and yard
improvements were occurring just outside.
The only disappointing element of this
learning experience was that the classroom
was not one of our newer, technologyenabled
environments. I look forward to the
development of more of these rooms across
the college. It is clear that the developments
in Duhig and other areas have caught the
attention of students and teachers alike.
Hopefully, in the near future, we will be
able to access this high level of technology
in all our classrooms.
Dean of Students
David Carroll
Security
I spoke to the boys at last week’s assembly
about how slack they are at securing their
own property. Despite the fantastic work of
staff to ensure that students’ property is safe
during class time and at sport after school,
some students leave very valuable items
lying around the playground. If students are
not going to take responsibility for their
own property, then I see no reason for the
staff of the College spending hours to try
and help find missing items. Security of
student property is a team game and at the
moment they are simply not being part of
the team.
Uniform Audit
With the help of the staff we are conducting
a uniform audit. If there is a problem with
any aspect of your son’s uniform I will be
writing to you asking you to rectify it. I am
particularly interested in hats and I expect
that every student in the College has a
Nudgee hat.
Winter uniform
At the start of term 2, students will be
required to wear their winter uniform which
includes the Nudgee pants and white shirt
and tie. This will be the uniform for terms 2
and 3. When the weather cools sufficiently,
students will also be required to wear their
blazer. The blazer is compulsory for all
students and arrangements need to be made
now to ensure your son has one.
We are now in week 7 and many students
will require a haircut. If you need assistance
in coaxing your son to the hairdressers for a
haircut, please call me on 3865 0444 and I
will assist you with this.
Student Record books
How many times have you looked at your
son’s SRB since the start of term? I believe
this is a really important task for parents in
supporting their son in his studies. For
boarding parents this is done every week by
the staff in the boarding school.
Student absentees
Please contact the absentee line, 3865 0536,
each day your son is absent from school.
This needs to be done by 9am.
Years 5-7 Co-ordinator
Sian Kennedy
With the end of Term 1 approaching and the
weather changing, we are beginning to think
about the changes in the school uniform for
Term 2. The boys will be required to have a
winter uniform to wear to school from the
beginning of the term, with the blazer being
incorporated when the weather becomes
cooler. This date will be announced by Mr
David Carroll, Dean of Students, at an
appropriate juncture in the term. When this
happens, all the boys will be required to
wear their blazers to and from school every
day, except on a Friday when they will
continue to wear their sports uniform. If the
boys require a warmer layer on these days,
they may wear the Nudgee tracksuit which
can be purchased from the Locker Room.
This is the same tracksuit that they will need
to wear for Saturday winter sports next year.
It is not compulsory to wear one on Fridays,
but if warmth is required we would ask that
it is the College tracksuit which is worn.
We are all ready for a short break, and
Easter offers us the opportunity to reflect
upon what has gone and what will happen in
the future. As we enter this reflective time
and consider the true spirituality of the
Easter period, I hope that you will all find
some quiet time in our ever increasingly
busy lives, to step back and enjoy the
company of those nearest and dearest to
you. May I wish all our 5-7 families a
happy and holy Easter.
Director of Boarding
John Bussenschutt
Hello Everyone - welcome to this week’s
Boarding News.
Mass
The Boarding Community celebrated Palm
Sunday Mass on Sunday 16 March. We had
the pleasure of having Corum Deus provide
the music/hymns for the evening and the
Mass began in the Chapel Mall with each
boy receiving a palm frond blessed by
Father Gerry.
Bullying & Harrassment
I was asked by Mr John Cross, Head of
O’Brien Boarding House, to address his
dorm about bullying and harassment. All of
the boys, when asked if they liked being
“paid out” responded with a unanimous
“no”. They all indicated that they had been
paid out and all indicated that they have
been involved in giving the same to others.
The message given was to remind them that

Nudgee has a zero tolerance of bullying of
any sort; “just messing around” is no excuse
for making another boy unhappy; no one
enjoys being “picked on”; and that the boys
they are traveling with on this journey at
Nudgee in Boarding are their friends for life –
treat them well – respect them all. I would
encourage parents to contact your son’s Head
of Boarding House directly if you have any
concerns regarding this subject. Please feel
free to contact me at any time on 0416294607
or by email: jbussenschutt@nudgee.com
Leave
The biggest single issue for Boarding Schools
in Australia is Leave, especially overnight
leave. Boarding schools are caught between
providing a safe environment and allowing
boys to go out and enjoy a social life.
The leave process in most Boarding schools
works on a triangular system of Boarding/
Parent/Host. The Boarder applies for leave
from the Boarding House, the parent approves
either by phone or via an approved list of
hosts, and the host confirms that the boarder is
staying with them. The host must be a
responsible adult, not an 18 year old sibling
who has their own social life. The host must
be able to act on the parent’s behalf, taking
responsibility for the safety and well being of
the boy in their care, including transport/
picking up from social occasions.
Nudgee Boarding does not provide “party
leave” where students can go out to a party
and return to the Boarding House. Boarding
students cannot take leave to a host, attend a
party and then return during the early hours of
the morning. There are obvious reasons for
this, including maintaining the security of the
Boarding House and staff knowing who is
present at any one time.
Hosts must be available at all times to take
responsibility for the boys entrusted to them.
We have at times found that a host is “down
the coast” whilst the boy in their care is
attending a Brisbane party. If something does
go wrong they are not in a situation to respond
appropriately. It is imperative that parents
and hosts understand their duty of care when
playing their part in the Overnight Leave
process.
If a student on leave suddenly finds himself in
a predicament whilst on leave, and unable to
contact his host, he is encouraged to contact
his Head of Boarding House or the Director of
Boarding immediately. All Heads of Boarding
House are on call and their numbers are
posted in the Boarding Houses and are given
to the boys in their care, as is mine. The
Leave process involves a written application
that states the following conditions: Type of
Leave; Destination; Host; Time of leaving;
Time of Returning. Boarding students must
make personal contact with duty staff on
leaving and on return.
Contact must be made with the Head of
Boarding House by student/host/parent or all
three if any of the conditions change/vary.
In an age of concern about binge drinking
amongst young people it is extremely
important for parents to consider wisely,
requests for leave to attend gatherings and
to ask the appropriate questions before
giving approval.
I ask parents, especially parents of boys in
Years 10, 11 and 12 to have a discussion
about this issue and to support us in our
collective care of your sons.
Easter
I would like to thank parents for assisting us
with the Boarding House closure for Easter.
A special thank you to Nudgee families who
have offered to have Boarders for this
holiday period. I am sure they will have a
great time, enjoying the opportunity to
share this special time with new friends.
Emergency Evacuation
Emergency evacuation drills were
conducted this week beginning with Cotter/
O’Brien on Monday 17 March at 9.30pm
and Hodda/Murphy on Tuesday 18 March at
10.30pm. These will be conducted each
term and are designed to practise safe and
orderly evacuation from the Boarding
Houses in case of emergencies.
End of Term 1
A reminder to Boarding parents/guardians
to provide travel arrangements for end of
Term 1 to their son’s Head of Boarding
House as soon as possible. Please check
flight details especially if leaving Australia.
The College closes at 12 noon on Friday
April 4.
All Boarders will move into Hodda Central
(Hodda Boarding House) from 4pm on the
Friday. The boarders staying overnight will
be accommodated in Hodda and leave from
here during the Saturday Travel day. Buses
will transport students to airports and
Transit Centre at set times according to
numbers of students involved and flight/
train/bus times. Access to Hodda Central is
via the entry ramp to the front foyer of
Hodda adjacent to the NITEC Library and
opposite the Boarders laundry. The phone
number for Hodda is 3865 0537.
FROM THE HEALTH CENTRE
On Monday and Tuesday this week we ran
the Immunisation Clinic for years 8 & 10 -
Hepatitis B, Varicella and Boostrix (Tetanus
Booster). The clinic ran smoothly and we
achieved a good coverage of both year
levels. However, I have noticed that we still
have a small percentage of year 10 boys
whose forms hadn't been returned, and
consequently weren't vaccinated. Perhaps
we might be able to catch up with these
boys next term.
We're still trying to make contact with
families who haven't returned medical forms
etc. We'll keep trying and hopefully have a
100% result before the end of term 1.
With the Easter break looming, I'll take this
opportunity to wish you all a very happy
and holy Easter. Enjoy these four days, in
what has been a very hectic first term.
Take care,
Red Centre and Simpson Desert Safari - June/July Holidays 2008
The AES Department has put together an exciting 20 day Safari to the Red Centre and the Simpson Desert. We are seeking the
interest of students and parents who would like to be part of this Safari. It will be led by experienced staff from Nudgee College. The
Safari will travel in 4WD vehicles and we welcome parents who wish to come, to register their vehicle with us. We will limit the convoy to
8 vehicles. We have at this stage interest from a number of people but to make this trip viable we need to seek out how many students
etc might wish to be part of this great trip.
The trip will head out via Longreach and on into Winton and Boulia. We will then travel across the Plenty Highway into the East McDonald
Ranges including Ruby Gap etc. We will have a break at Alice Springs including sightseeing and hot air ballooning before heading off into
the West McDonald Ranges onto Kings Canyon and Uluru. After visiting these great icons we will head back towards the Simpson Desert
entering from the Finke. We will spend several days traveling across the desert including such sites as Dalhousie Springs, Big Red and
then into Birdsville, then it’s home. We have worked out a rough costing including 90% of meals, all accommodation fuel etc and we
believe we can do this for $945.00 per head. Drivers will be cheaper as they are providing the vehicle.
Please register your interest by emailing me at boreilly@nudgee.com We will have a meeting for those interested people who have
registered before the end of this term.
Thanks
Debating
On Friday night we hosted our first home
debate of the year against BBC. It was quite a
special occasion as it was our first opportunity
to conduct our debates in the newly
refurbished Duhig Building. Many admiring
comments were made by both our parents and
spectators and our guests from BBC. I know
the boys felt very proud to be able to compete
in such smart rooms.
Our Senior A team, consisting of Dom
Carroll, Chris Beevers and Damian Riggall,
won convincingly, arguing the affirmative
side of the topic “That the USA has been good
for world security”. We are yet to see all
Round 4 results uploaded to
www.gpsqld.org.au however, our boys have
won 3 out of their 4 debates and this should
put them in a good position on the ladder.
Congratulations also to our other winning
teams: Year 8(B), Year 9(A), Year 9(B), Year
10(A) and Year 10(B).
Our debater of the week is Feleti Kaituu who
is a member of the winning Year 9(B) team.
This was his first debate ever, and while he
was working with Mrs O’Connor on Friday
afternoon, the system crashed and he lost his
entire debate speech! He had no choice but to
start all over again with very little time to
spare. This would have been a very
distressing thing however, not only did he
debate, but they won!
Our gratitude needs to be expressed publicly
to Mitchell Grady who has been running
workshops with our debaters over the past
three weeks. Mitchell, an Old Boy of Terrace,
was, and continues to be, a very successful
debater who has shared his expertise with our
boys. I was fortunate enough to sit in on a
number of these sessions and I know that if
the boys continue to implement his advice,
they will continue to improve on their natural
ability.
We now have quite a long break before our
Round 5 debates. These will be away against
Terrace after the holidays.
U15’s Report
The U15’s were very successful in
Toowoomba, defeating TGS in most
divisions. The 15A’s entertained the
spectators with another close win - NC
5/176; TGS 159. Liam Greinke (60) and
Dan Hutcheon (31) opened with an 86 run
partnership and ensured that TGS was
always on the back foot. James Hanley
bowled out 3 of the opposition for only 29
runs and Owen Daley wowed the crowd
with a 2 wicket maiden over. The 15B’s
remain undefeated, smashing their
opposition - NC 9/138; TGS 51. Ben
Conway was man of the match bowling 5/9.
Ben Arnold was also a fierce competitor
taking 2/5. Nick Riggall and Mitch Fontalvo
both batted up a storm with 18 runs each.
The 15D’s were on fire and were easy
winners - NC 7/130; TGS 65. Star
performers include Jay Adkins 2/7, Kerrod
List 3/6, Norman Liu, 2/6 and Jake Krantz
1/2. Sam Watson was the highest run scorer
with 28. Well done to the boys in what was
probably their best performance of the
season. Unfortunately the 15C’s went down
in a tight finish - NC 98; TGS 8/110. Jake
Milne smacked the ball around a very slow
outfield and clocked up a cool 20 runs for
his team. We play at home against Ipswich
Grammar on Saturday March 29. It will be
an exciting day for the 15B’s - come along
and support them as they fight for premier
position. Good luck to all players and
coaches.
Volleyball Round 6 v Churchie
Nudgee had a successful day on Saturday
against Churchie, winning 7 from 12 games.
The 13A & C’s had great games, both
winning in three sets 2-1. The 14A & B
teams also had good 2-1 wins while the 14C
struggled this week going down 2-0. The
15A’s had a close match winning 2-1. The
16B’s continued their winning streak,
beating Churchie 2-0, putting them into
premiership contention. The 2nds had a
great win this week 3-1. The 1sts went
down 3-1 in a close match which could have
gone either way. Matt Perry coming back
from injury had a solid game.
Matt Mellors from the winning 13C’s was
Player of the Week. Matt’s overall
performance during the match was very
good, with his hitting, encouraging his team
mates and playing his best.
GPS HEAD OF THE RIVER 2008
Saturday’s Head of The River 2008 saw the
culmination of a very hard but very
successful season for the Nudgee Rowing
fraternity. The Regatta, held at Stockland
Park, Kawana on the Sunshine Coast held
many positives for Nudgee Rowing to take
forward into next season with the best set of
results ever achieved. Buoyed by the
success of the Juniors at their Head two
weeks previously, the Nudgee crews went
into this regatta full of optimism. Indeed,
two of those Junior crews went on to race at
U15 level and proved to be very
competitive. The crew of Aaron Hawthorne,
Ryan Stewart, Grant Hayes, David Steyn
and coxswain Lachlan Burton, who had won
the U14 2 nd quad event at the Junior Head,
raced at U15 6 th quad level on Saturday and
came in a very close second to Brisbane
Grammar, an excellent achievement and a
fine way to round off their season in style!

Both of the 1 st and 2 nd U15 quads finished in
third place after being very competitive
throughout the season. Indeed, the 1 st quad
had won two great races during the season and
had placed consistently in the top three. In
this instance, the 2 nd quad missed out by a
bow ball to second place finishers, Churchie.
This was an impressive result given the fact
that they had replacement Dillon Gibbons
come into the crew to replace Aedin Davies
who had broken his foot on Tuesday
afternoon!
The 3 rd U15 quad under the guidance of coach
Gary Mark, did exceptionally well to get
second place, Nudgee this time being on the
better side of the bow ball finish, ahead of
Brisbane Boys College.
The U15 5 th quad raced well and came in
fourth. This crew were selected as the U 14 1 st
crew for the season but disappointed at the
Junior Head after a disastrous start. This time,
they raced very well and ensured that more
important points were added to the Nudgee
overall score!
The U15 4 th quad raced well according to
coach, Tony Pitt but slipped to sixth place
after promising much more during the season.
The 7 th quad competed very much in the spirit
of the event with a last second enforced
substitution and my congratulations go to that
crew for their efforts made on behalf of
Nudgee Rowing!
The U16 1 st VIII were on a high after their
performance at the Australian National
Rowing Championships the previous weekend
and managed to carry this on with a great row
to finish in third behind both Terrace and The
Southport School. With the alternative draw
chosen due to unfavourable wind conditions,
Nudgee found themselves on the wrong side
of the course in lane 5, racing TSS in lane 2
and Terrace in lane 1. Away from the action,
Nudgee were left wondering how different it
might have been had they been in an inside
lane. Nevertheless, a great result after an up
and down season.
The Open 3 rd VIII raced in the spirit of things,
never threatening the pack but combining the
stern four experience of Alessandro Zanda,
Tom Campbell, Mitchell Cramp and Doug
Winkler with novice newcomers Michael
Mayoh, Phillip Etches, Herbert Roebuck and
George Moloney (with substitute Michael
Pols) to ensure that Nudgee gained further
valuable points.
The Open 2 nd VIII have improved all season
and had established themselves as the third
place seed for this final. After getting off to a
good start and leading the pack, they held on
to third place behind Churchie and TSS until
the last ten strokes of the race where Terrace
increased their rate and pushed through to
finish just under a second ahead. Fourth place
for Nudgee, but a great effort on their part to
finish ahead of both Grammar and BBC.
The Open 1 st VIII race is the Blue Ribbon
event of the Head and it proved to be a
cracker of a race with no-one being
disappointed. Nudgee pushed themselves
into contention coming into the last 500m of
the race, but as they approached the last
100m, both Terrace and Churchie seemed to
have a greater injection of pace in the run in
to the line with Terrace finishing just half a
second ahead of Churchie with Nudgee just
a further half a second behind that!
On overall points – Nudgee came in 6 th
place on 62 points. However, only one point
behind Grammar and four points behind
TSS on 66. As we did not have a point
scoring crew for the U16 2 nd and 3 rd VIII
events, it has to be said that Nudgee Rowing
has finally come of age on its 10 th Year
Anniversary! It leaves the other GPS
Schools now looking over their shoulder at
what promises to be an exciting second
decade for Nudgee!
DUHIG CLASSROOMS OPEN
FOR BUSINESS
As fate would have it, the
refurbished and modernised
Duhig Classrooms were reopened
on a very special day
in the Nudgee calendar, St
Joseph’s Day. As the Nudgee
community were marking
this solemn occasion at
a College Mass, the final
touches were being applied
to the new classrooms in
readiness to accept eager
students and teachers.
The College is extremely delighted with the final product in these classrooms.
Yes, they were completed later than we had hoped, but as they say, “the
good things in life are worth waiting for!”
I must congratulate Nudgee’s dedicated and professional academic staff, who
endured several weeks of teaching in temporary classrooms. Their extra efforts
have not gone unnoticed and I am sure they will agree with me that the wait
has been worth it. Gerard Alexander’s first comments were that “the climate of
the classrooms have been completely transformed, for the better. One of my
students even commented that the rooms even smell great.”
I also commend our Nudgee students, whose normal routines have been
altered because of these major refurbishments. However I am confident the
boys will significantly benefit from the new resources within the classrooms: the
Interactive Whiteboards, Projectors, Internet access and the fresh and attractive
learning spaces.
All 15 classrooms in the Duhig Building are now on-line. The external appearance
of the Duhig block is also striking, with painting of the roof now complete.
Nudgee families will have the opportunity to view all classrooms during the
Nudgee Open Day on June 14, where tours and demonstrations of the new
technology will be on offer. I encourage all Nudgee families to take a tour, as you
will then fully appreciate the investment we, as the Nudgee Community, have
made and how this will assist your son’s education.

newsupdate
Another visitor to the College on St Joseph’s Day was the President of the Nudgee
College Old Boy’s Association, Tony Behm. Tony was astounded at the external
appearance of the Duhig Building, particularly with some of the finer detail, such
as the numbers 1918 on the central down-pipe. After viewing the classrooms,
he was similarly impressed. Liz Gaber from the Maths Department provided a
quick demonstration of the new technology, showcasing the new capacity, she
as a teacher now has available. This time Tony was left speechless, which is no
mean feat! “I honestly believe I would have passed Latin if this technology was
available in my day ie 1964.”
As mentioned earlier, this investment has been partially funded with your
support for the Master Plan Levy and also by those families who make voluntary
(tax deductible) donations to the College Building Fund. On this occasion,
Nudgee was fortunate to receive grants of over $78 000 from the Commonwealth
Government’s “Investing in Our Schools” capital program and the State
Government’s Capital Small Grants Program.
As we plan for our next major project, I am cognisant that Government Funding is
not always reliable. Therefore we have to be self-reliant in order to make progress
relatively quickly. To this end, I encourage those families who have not yet
supported the College Building Fund to do so before the end of the financial year.
After all, your voluntary, tax deductible donations are really a further investment
in your son. The completed Duhig Refurbishment is testament to that!
Lastly, and on behalf of the entire Nudgee Community, I wish to thank the efforts of
Nudgee’s Property & Services team. Their skill, effort and plain hard work has been
an inspiration. The entire project was managed by Andre Maestracci, Nudgee’s
Director of Property & Services, who also deserves our acknowledgement.
We look forward with excitement to the future.
