Outside-the-Box Grant Application
The Outside-the-Box Grant rewards creativity aimed at expanding students’ understanding of their
community and the world. An example of a funded grant is Jeff Platt’s South Middle “Five-Star Leaders: Crisis
at Little Rock” grant. Every 8th grade student studies materials provided by the Eisenhower Library that
explores democratic leadership, constitutional concepts, and the process of consensus-based decision making.
They then travel to the Library where they role play historical figures, analyze school desegregation issues, and
participate in mock news conferences.
The Allocations Committee meets in March and awards are announced by April 15 for the next academic year.
