trails, which range from 1.2 to 3

trails the gym equipment includes

Huff 'N' Puff
The free Huff 'N' Puff
program will have children
aged 18 months to 12 years
running, jumping, throwing,
skipping and climbing their
way through a fun-filled
program of activities.
Huff ʻNʼ Puff will be held on
Thursday 6 October at Ian
Cowie Reserve, Westcott
Parade, Rockbank. Parents
can register their child aged
18months – 5years for one of
two sessions between
10.30am and 11.30am or
11.30am and 12.30pm.
Children aged 5-12 will
continue to take part in the
traditional two hour Huff 'n' Puff
program of rotating through
numerous fitness and healthy food
stations.

Multi-Sports
The Multi-Sports days will be held
in Melton and Caroline Springs
and are designed to keep children
active and entertained during the
school holidays. Multi-Sports days
will be held at the Caroline
Springs Leisure Centre, The
Parade on Wednesday 5 October
from 10am – noon.
Activities at the Multi-Sports days
include a variety of preschool and
primary school sporting elements
such as basketball, kinder gym, an
animal farm, table tennis, soccer,
scout activities, and arts and
crafts. Cost is $3 per child and a
parent or guardian must be
present to supervise their children
at all times. Parents/guardian must
register their participation to
secure a place.

Lakeside Live 2012 –
Applications Open
Melton Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest to
participate in the 2012 Lakeside Live Festival.
Lakeside Live will be held on Saturday 21 January 2012 at
the CS Square Car Park on Lake Street, Caroline Springs.
The event will include carnival rides, entertainment and
activities, community stalls and a business expo which will all
run from 4pm through until 10pm. The event will culminate in
a fabulous fireworks display at approximately 9.30pm.
Applications are now being accepted for community stalls and
food vendors.
Community stall applications will be accepted from community
groups only to promote their services or sell quality new items
such as plants, clothing, leather goods, pottery and ceramics,
home wares, giftware and contemporary art and craft items.
The sale of second hand goods is not permitted.
Local businesses will also be invited to participate in the new
and exciting Small Business Expo. Visitors to the event will
be able to interact with local businesses that will showcase
their exciting and innovative products and services.
Applications will open to local businesses soon.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin Mammarella JP, said
the community stalls would provide an opportunity for the
community to browse local groupsʼ services with the
opportunity to purchase a range of quality goods whilst
enjoying the atmosphere of Lakeside Live.
“Lakeside Live is one of Councilʼs major events and always
proves extremely popular with families,” the Mayor said.

Get creative with
short story
competition
Entries are now open for the 2011 Melton Shire
Council Short Story Competition.
Entries can be submitted in a number of
creative mediums and can be a written story, a
short film/animation, illustrations/photography
or a combination of all three.
The only requirement is that all entries must be
short and tell a story. Written entries must be
less than 1500 words and other story formats
must take less than five minutes to experience.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin
Mammarella JP, said the competition was open
to writers of all ages.
“There are great prizes on offer in four sections
– adult, adults with English as a second
language, secondary and primary school
students. There are also special prizes for
schools to encourage entries by their students,”
Cr Mammarella said.
“The competition is open to anyone who lives,
works or studies in the Shire of Melton.”
Entries close on 14 October 2011 at 5pm.

Welcome to the October Edition of
the Caroline Springs Community
Update.
It is great to see that the weather is
finally warming up, and with it
comes more opportunities to
participate in some activities with
family and friends. Perhaps a bit of
spring cleaning of the home!
Donʼt forget that residents now
have the option of getting there
unwanted goods picked up directly

Most recently, I attended a launch
for the ʻUdderly Artʼ project, at the
Caroline Springs Library, where
very impressive life sized cows
were artistically painted in a
collaboration between local artist
Blair Angelo and people with
disabilities, their siblings and
support staff from four local
service providers.
Their willingness to contribute and
their enthusiasm have made the
project a great success. The
artwork will be installed at Morton
Homestead in Taylors Hill, which
will provide the perfect backdrop
with its green open space and
abundance of trees.
Council has started a Community
Languages Collection to match
the growth of our culturally and
linguistically diverse community.
The collection is located at the
Caroline Springs library and
includes DVDs, magazines and
newspapers in Arabic, Chinese,
Hindi, Maltese, Sinhalese,
Spanish and Vietnamese with
Macedonian material to come.

The Point Village Pedestrian
Bridge set to open

The pedestrian bridge linking The Point Village
to The Esplanade Village was craned into
place on Wednesday 21st September. Final
touches to the bridge and connecting paths are
expected to be completed by the end of
September.

in the first week of October. It will also connect
the new fitness equipment circuit based along

maintenance of the nature
strips abutting their property,
not just the front.

strip at both the front and side.
Council has bylaws that
address the untidy nature of
these areas and may take
action if they become too
unsightly. Iʼd like to think that
we are proud of where we live
and work to enhance our image
rather than wait until it is
enforced.
Traffic management at the
intersection of Caroline Springs
Boulevard and the Western
Highway is unacceptable for
vehicles entering Caroline
Springs from Christies Road.
Recently cars have been
banked back onto the Deer
Park Bypass causing a
dangerous disruption to the
major highway between
Melbourne and Adelaide. It is
not just vehicles travelling north
but also for those trying to exit
Caroline Springs in the morning
the line of cars stretches back
past the roundabout at
Chisholm Drive. These
situations are unacceptable
and I will continue to request
council to advocate strongly to
Vic Roads to address these
very serious issues.

The Lions Club of Caroline Springs & District is
now holding the "Welcome to new Resident's"
program previously run by Delfin Caroline
Springs. This is an opportunity to provide new
residents with information about local facilities &
to meet a few other residents. Moving into a new

as possible.

Catch on to the 2011 Fishing Expo
Get out your rod and reel and get fishing at the 2011 Fishing
Expo from 11am – 2pm on Sunday 16 October 2011.
With thousands of trout in Navan Park Lake, there is plenty of
fun for all fishing enthusiasts. When you want to take a break
from fishing you will find lots of activities for the whole family
including roving entertainment, 'Flathead Fred's Fun Fishing
Show', children's activities, fishing information, giveaways and
lots more.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin Mammarella said the
2011 Fishing Expo is shaping up to be a fantastic day for all the
family.
“The Fishing Expo is a really nice family day; I encourage
everyone to go along and enjoy the activities at Navan Park
Lake,” the Mayor said.
There is no need to register and the first 300 children to arrive
receive a free gift including bait and a complimentary BBQ
voucher.
Please bring along your own rod, reel and tackle and wear
suitable clothing and footwear. You'll find Navan Park on the
corner of Centenary Avenue and Coburns Road, West Melton.
The 2011 Fishing Expo is proudly hosted by the
Didyabringyarodalong Angling Club together with the Melton
Shire Council and is also supported by the Department of
Primary Industries (Fisheries).

Celebrate Carers Week at CARE Melton Expo
To celebrate Carers Week (16 – 22
October), Melton Shire Council is
hosting CARE Melton 2011 – Carers
Access Resources EXPO.
The Expo will be held on Wednesday
19 October 2011, 10am – 2pm at the
Melton Community Hall, 232 High
Street, Melton.
Over 30 exhibitors will feature at the
expo including Diabetes Australia,
Djerriwarrh Health Services, Merrimu
Services, Norwood Association,
Autism Victoria, and Alzheimer's
Australia.
The theme of this year's expo is
'Accessible Transport' with both
community and public transport
providers participating including Myki,
Metro Travels Aid and Transport
Connections.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin
Mammarella JP, encouraged
residents to attend the Expo.
“Residents who are interested in
finding out more about programs,
services and support that is available
to them are encouraged to come
along and explore the expo and enjoy
the range of workshops.”
Family Relationship Services for
Carers will also be hosting a free
information workshop on Wills and
Estates Planning to help carers to
better plan for the future of the person
they care for.
Artist Peter Cave will be
demonstrating his painting skills and
encouraging participation of people
with a disability and carers in the arts.
A silent auction including four of
Peter's outstanding works will take
place during the Expo.
There will be free 25 minute relaxation
workshops with a complimentary yoga
mat provided for those interested in
learning how to become more relaxed
and refreshed.
Copies of 'A Guide to Disability and
Aged Services in the Shire of Melton'
which provides information on over
200 support and care services will
also be available at the Expo.
A light lunch and refreshments will be
provided and there will be
entertainment by the Stiletto Sisters
and community groups.

Caesia Gardens hosts BBQ celebration
Local retirement community Caesia Gardens will be throwing open its
doors to the wider community on Sunday, October 23 with the village
hosting a BBQ Street Party to celebrate the villageʼs newly released
homes.
For those considering retirement living,
the BBQ Street Party will be a great
opportunity to see firsthand what life is
like at Caesia Gardens – one of Lend
Leaseʼs vibrant retirement villages.
“As part of the day we will have a
sausage sizzle, a roving jazz performer,
childrenʼs entertainment and the villageʼs
new bocce field will be open for games,
as will the bowling green and outdoor
chess set. It promises to be a lot of fun,”
said Gail Monument from Caesia
Gardens.
“Weʼre certainly looking forward to introducing our wonderful village to
the wider community and weʼre extending the invitation to anyone who
would like to come along.”

Find my bin collection day
Melton Shire Council has developed a tool to make it easy for residents
to find out the days of their rubbish, recycling and green waste bin
collections.
The “Find My Bin Collection Dayʼ tool asks residents to enter their
street address to identify which day of the week their bins are
collected. The tool can be found on the rubbish/recycling page and
new residentsʼ page of Councilʼs website.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin Mammarella JP, said the tool
was accessible to residents and simple to use.
“Council is committed to improving services for residents and ensuring
important information is readily available.
“Each week, 154 people move into our Shire and itʼs the little things like
knowing when your rubbish and recycling gets collected that makes
moving to a new area easier.
Garbage bins are collected every week in all collection areas of Melton
Shire. Recycling and green waste bins are collected alternating weeks.
Residents must ensure their bins are out on the kerbside by 6am on
the bin collection day.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is the carpal tunnel?
The wrist (or carpal) bones (underneath) and the transverse carpal ligament
(across the top) form a tunnel at the palm side of the wrist. The median nerve
runs through this tunnel and gives sensation to the thumb, forefinger, middle
finger and half of the ring finger. Tendons also run through the carpal tunnel into
the hand.
Any thickening from inflamed tendons or other causes of swelling reduce the
amount of space in the carpal tunnel, squashing the median nerve in the
process. This is when carpal tunnel syndrome starts.
The muscles of the thumb are also serviced by the median nerve. A person
with advanced carpal tunnel syndrome may find they cannot properly use or
move their thumb anymore, and may experience difficulties when trying to
grasp objects.
Symptoms
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:
• Numbness & Pins and needles
• Pain, particularly at night
• Shooting pains from the wrist
• Radiated or referred pain into the arm and shoulder
• Weakness of the hand
• The little finger and half of the ring finger are unaffected.
Causes
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by a combination of factors and sometimes
a cause cannot be found:
• Arthritis – especially rheumatoid arthritis, can cause inflammation and swelling.
• Pregnancy – the hormones associated with pregnancy cause general fluid
retention, which can compress the nerve. Carpal tunnel syndrome triggered by
pregnancy usually resolves soon after birth.
• Wrist fractures – bone fragments can irritate the tenosynovium or reduce the
amount of space in the carpal tunnel.
• Congenital factors – some people have a smaller carpal tunnel than others.
• Overuse injury – the tendons in the carpal tunnel can become irritated and
inflamed by awkward postures or repetitive hand movements. People who use
their hands repetitively in their day-to-day activities, such as people doing
assembly line work, may be more at risk.
What can you do about it?
The main step is to first identify what is causing the carpal tunnel to become
inflamed, and then make the necessary changes to your day-to-day life to reduce
the swelling in the carpal tunnel. It is not possible to ʻwork throughʼ carpal tunnel
syndrome. Initially, the pain and stiffness may be slight. However, if left untreated,
the discomfort may increase until the hand is painful all the, and permanent damage
can result.
Treatment options
Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may include:
• Rest from any positions or movements that make the symptoms worse
• Wearing a wrist splint prescribed by a physio, especially at night
• Cortisone injections or tablets to reduce the inflammation, or fluid tablets to reduce
swelling
• Surgery

FOOTY DAY
Merrimu celebrated footy finals by holding a
Footy Day on Wednesday 21st September.
Plenty of footy themed activities including kick
to kick, handball competitions, banner making,
footy bingo and trivia were enjoyed by all. It
was great to see everyone don their best footy
gear and proudly show their allegiance to their
teams.
Everyone received a prize for their
participation and our kick to kick sensations
were presented with medals. Merrimu would
like to thank the football clubs who donated
merchandise; Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast,
Melbourne and Western Bulldogs.
Our day ended on a high note with everyone
joining in the chorus of all the club songs.

SERVICE PET ADOPTION MONTH
Thinking of adding a pet to your
family? Here are five reasons to
adopt your new best friend.
1. You'll save a life
Sadly, over 250,000 dogs and cats
are euthanized each year in
Australia simply because too many
people give up their pets and too
few people adopt from shelters.
Because there is limited space at
shelters, staff members sometimes
need to make very hard decisions to
euthanize animals who haven't
been adopted.
The number of euthanized animals
could be reduced dramatically if
more people adopted pets instead
of buying them. By adopting from an
open door animal shelter you'll help
save a animals life.
2. You'll get a healthy pet
Open door Animal shelters are
brimming with happy, healthy
animals just waiting for someone to
take them home. Shelters such as
the Lost Dogs Home fully examine
and give vaccinations to adoption
animals, and desex them before
being adopted. In addition to
medical care, more and more
shelters also screen animals for
specific temperaments and
behaviours to make sure each
family finds the right pet for its
lifestyle. All animals also come with
a health guarantee.
It is a common misconception that
animals end up in shelters because
they've been abused or done
something "wrong". In fact, most
animals are given to shelters
because of "people reasons," not
because of anything they've done.
Things like a divorce, a move, lack
of time or financial constraints are
among the most common reasons
why pets lose their homes.

Adopting a pet from an open door

farms or kitten farms
Puppy and kitten farms are "factory
style" dog and cat-breeding facilities
that put profit above the welfare of
dogs and cats. Most animals raised
in these farms are housed in
shockingly poor conditions with
improper medical care, and the
parents of the these animals are
kept in cages to be bred over and
over for years, without human
companionship and with little hope
of ever joining a family. And after
they're no longer profitable,
breeding animals are simply
discarded—either killed, abandoned
or sold at auction.
Puppy farm puppies and kittens are
sold to unsuspecting consumers in
pet stores, over the Internet and
through newspaper classified
advertisements to whoever is willing
to pay for them.
Marketed as coming from great
breeders, well-rehearsed sales
tactics keep money flowing to the
puppy and kitten farm by ensuring
that buyers never get to see where
the kittens and puppies actually
come from (a vital step in animal
buying). Many of the puppies have
serious behavioural and health
problems that might not be apparent
for months, including medical
problems that can cost thousands of
dollars to treat, if they are treatable
at all. Unfortunately, a lot of people
are not even aware that puppy and
kitten farms exist, so when they buy
a pet from a pet store, online or
other retail outlet, they are
unwittingly supporting this cruel
industry.
By adopting instead of buying a pet,
you can be certain you aren't
supporting cruel puppy and kitten
farms with your money. Puppy and
kitten farms will continue to operate
until people stop purchasing their
animals. Instead of buying a dog or
cat, visit your local open door shelter
where you will likely to find dozens
of healthy, well-socialized puppies
and kittens as well as adult dogs
and adult cats (including purebreds)
just waiting for that special home -
yours.

The club has recently taken on a new look with a
new logo being designed by our Club Secretary.
In creating the new logo for the club, Lynette
wanted to make use of the old logo to retain a
sense of club history, whilst at the same time,
giving it a modern and fresh feel to take us into
the future. As such, she has incorporated the blue
and green colouring of the old logo with a modern
stylized tennis player. The use of these colours
also recognises the community we live in
reflecting Lake Caroline, the parklands and tree
lined streets of

Lydia Lassila Youth Scholarship awarded to local runner
The inaugural Lydia Lassila
Sports Scholarship has been
awarded to athletics 400m
runner Alexandra Bulic.
The 16 year old from Melton
South is the Victorian Champion
in the U/18 400m and 4 x 400m
relay team, is ranked 22nd in
Australia for All Ages 400m, 3rd
in Australia for U/20 400m and is
ranked 1st in Australia for U/18
400m. Alexandra's next major
event will be the Australian All
Schools Championships in
Brisbane in December.
The Lydia Lassila Youth
Scholarship provides up to $1500
annually to a young Shire of
Melton sportsperson under 25
who has reached a high level of
achievement in their chosen
sport. The scholarship has been
named to recognise Diggers
Rest local Lydia Lassila who won
gold in the women's freestyle
aerials final at the Winter
Olympics in Vancouver in 2010.

Join in the fun at the Melton Plate
Melton Shire residents are invited
to attend the 2011 Melton Plate to
be held on Friday 7 October at
Tabcorp Park, Ferris Road,
Melton.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr
Justin Mammarella JP, said the
Melton Plate was always a
highlight of the Shire of Melton
Harness Racing calendar.
“The Melton Plate is always a
great occasion for our municipality.
I especially invite our new
residents from all over the Shire to
join in the free family
entertainment.
“We are very proud to be the
home of harness racing and work
in partnership with Harness
Racing Victoria to bring
employment opportunities and
entertainment to all our residents.”
The first race will kick off the
meeting at 6.37pm and it will be a
great night celebrating the start of
Harness Racing Victoria's exciting
Spring/Summer Carnival.
There will be lots of 'on-course'
entertainment for children
including face painting, roving
entertainment and jumping
castles. There will be show bags
for the first 500 children on course.
The very best four and five-yearold
pacers around will vie for the
$50,000 Melton Plate over a
distance of 2240 metres.
The event is organised by
Harness Racing Victoria and
sponsored by Melton Shire
Council with National Australia
Bank as a major partner. Other

Council responds
to new dog
legislation
Melton Shire Council has been swift in
responding to recent new State
Government legislation to more effectively
regulate the keeping of restricted breed
dogs.

your clothes with a natural product
that was not harmful to the
environment? Well look no further
than Soap Nuts!
somewhere that you need to
smash them to make them work
better. The packet comes with a
little cotton bag, in which I put 5-7
soapnuts, which last for about 4
washes.
Council has initiated measures to
complement the intent of the new
legislation.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin
Mammarella JP, said: “Council is
committed to protecting the community
from dangerous dogs and to enforce its
powers in the identification and regulation
of restricted breed dogs including, but not
restricted to, American Pit Bulls.”
Council is aware there have been reports
from other municipalities that some people
are releasing their restricted breed dogs
on to the street rather than meeting the
strict regulations designed to keep these
animals in check.
Cr Mammarella: “Council encourages
owners to voluntarily surrender their
unwanted restricted breed dogs to the
Melton Pound and has waived the fee for
such surrenders.
“Since December last year, Council has
been undertaking a proactive doorknock
program across the municipality to locate
and identify unregistered animals
including restricted breed dogs. This
proactive doorknock program will be
ongoing.”
The amnesty to register restricted breed
dogs will end on 29 September 2011
meaning that after this date any
unregistered restricted breed dog can be
seized by Council officers and
subsequently destroyed.
Anyone believing they know the location
of an unregistered restricted breed dog
can phone the dangerous dog hotline on
1300 10 10 80 between 8am and 6pm and
the details will be passed on to the
relevant municipal Council.

They contain large quantities of
saponin in their shells and act as
a natural detergent. The reason
they are considered eco-friendly is
not only because they are a
natural resource but also because
they are antimicrobial and
biodegradable.
They have been used for washing
for thousands of years by native
people in Asia as well as Native
Americans. Used as natural
soaps, they have also been known
to cure eczema and psoriasis
caused by chemicals in regular
laundry detergent and since they
are hypo allergenic, soap nuts do
not harm the skin or trigger any
allergic reactions. The soap nuts
can also be used as shampoo to
fight dandruff and head lice (nits).
I now use them to wash clothes,
especially my cheese cloths after
a cheesemaking session. They
are so simple to use. The nuts
were still whole, and I read
After a bit of smashing, I throw
them into my front loading washing
machine.
I add white vinegar as the rinse aid
for the cheese cloth as I have
found that it kills any bacteria and
dissolves any cheesy residue. I
set the washer to cold water and
for a 30 minute express wash.
The verdict? Well, the cheesecloths
smelled nice and fresh, and
clean enough to use in the next
cheese making session.
Why wouldn't you use soapnuts? I
think they are easy to use and
cheaper to buy than even ecodetergent!
When you have fully
used the soapnuts over and over,
you simply put them in the
compost bin and waste water from
your washing machine can be
used on the veggie patch.

Hello Readers,
Welcome to all our new and regular
readers for another edition of the
Caroline Springs Police Community
Update.
The September Issue spoke of a
number of Police Operations being
conducted and the outcome of those
was very successful. In particular the
“Hoon Operation” ran over a
Friday/Saturday night saw two vehicle
impounds, one for excessive speed
and another for hoon behaviour. In
addition to this 34 drivers received
penalty notices, 3 vehicles received
defect notices and 9 drivers will be
receiving a summons to attend court.
Unfortunately this highlighted the fact
that drivers need to slow down, obey
road rules and ensure the vehicle they
are driving is safe and road worthy.
From 1st of October we will see a
further operation commence, known
as Operation Roller. This will run until
the 31st of December. This is a
Western Suburbs Operation that will
see all areas including Caroline
Springs saturated with local Police
and additional members from the
Operational Response Unit. The
concept is “Public Safety”. Criminal
matters will be addressed including
Offences Against the Person, Public
Order and Traffic Matters. Be assured
people can expect to be dealt with if
they break the law.
A reminder to all motorists about the
amended vehicle impound legislation.
Vehicles can now be impounded for a
period of 30 days. The owner/driver

will also be responsible for towing
costs and storage costs in addition to
the penalty for the offence committed.
The storage and towing costs can be
up around $1500. As well as hoon
driving a vehicle can also be
impounded for excessive speed,
certain cases involving drink driving,
over loaded vehicles and some cases
where a driver is driving with a
suspended or disqualified driver
licence.
A further reminder to motorists
travelling South on Gourlay Road.
New sign posting prohibits drivers
from turning right into Becca Way.
This has been and will continue to be
patrolled and fines will be issued.
This is particularly relevant to parents
doing pick ups or drop offs to Caroline
Springs College, Springside Campus.
Melton Shire Council has introduced
a 24hr Graffiti Hotline. This will
enable residents to call and report
graffiti either in public areas or on
private premises. This report will
ensure that the graffiti can be
removed in most cases within 7
working days. Through this initiative
and the support of the community we
hope we will all continue to have pride
in our neighbourhood and to keep it
graffiti free. All enquires and reports
please call, 1800 779 484.
I would also like to encourage you to
continue calling Crimestoppers on
1800 333 000 if you have specific
intelligence about a crime or a
concern. If you have information
about a regular Hoon Driver, this can
now be reported to Crimestoppers.
Simply call the above number and
provide as much information as
possible. Such detail as
make/model/colour of vehicle,
times/days when activity is taking
place and any other descriptive
information that you can observe. For
all emergencies “000” should still be
called.
If for any reason you may need to
attend the Caroline Springs Police
Station, please be aware that the front
counter will open for some additional
hours as staff permits. When possible
the counter will be open from 8.00am
to 6.00pm. This will NOT be every
day but as staffing allows. If you need
to visit outside 9.00am – 5.00pm,
please call first.
